Project Octopath Traveler on Switch 2018, demo on eShop [Up: Surveys sent out]

Lumination

What was so cartoony or caricatural about him, really? How do you think pimps treat their whores?
It's pretty much this:
They probably don't say the most evil thing a 16-year-old can think of at every turn.

He came off as the kind of person who would knock over your glass of water (and constantly make cringy sexual innuendo jokes) just because it was an asshole thing to do rather than the owner of an club staffed by exploited women.

Welcome back final fantasy.

I'm so pumped for this game, just has that classic feel of final fantasy and how it used to be. I love it, can't wait

I just started to play the demo and man this is really good. Thoroughly impressed after only 30 minutes.

a really quick impression of the battle system is a mix of Persona's Once More and Bravely Default's default system. And damn that music is good.

Well yes
As Bravely did previously to me I am getting the same old vibe
And the "HD 2d" is really charming even if the darkening visual effects is too strong imho

One question: will the final game allow you to play all the 8 stories from the 8 protagonists point of view?

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
I played the dancer's scenario and yeah, it seems really good so far. Story, while not the most innovative thing, seems to have potential and its more reminiscent of classic 16-bit era RPGs. The whole game, from art style, to having 8 characters with intertwining stories, feels like it is to SaGa what Bravely Default is to FF. Romancing SaGa 3 in particular.

After you beat the dancer's scenario you can continue playing for a bit and go to the warrior's town. It lets you recruit the warrior, so you will be able to recruit characters from different scenarios, not unlike other SaGa games.

My biggest issue so far is that the enemies feel like HP sinks, even with exploiting their weaknesses and comboing them. And also the voices in battle get annoying FAST. Seriously:

"I am ready"
"I am ready"
"I am ready"
"I am ready"

Every goddamn round!

Hopefully these issues will be fixed during the final game.

What is with all the requests for HP bars. Did no one play the 8 and 16 bit final fantasy games?

Old-school Final Fantasy games don't allow you to amp your actions with expendable resources. Showing enemy HP in Octopath would allow for more informed usage of the boost mechanic.

My biggest issue so far is that the enemies feel like HP sinks

When fighting multiple enemies, boost an AoE after breaking everything to deal insane damage.

Morrigan Stark

Arrogant Smirk
It's pretty much this:
As I said, as a woman posting online with an opinion, I've had similarly vile misogyny thrown at me (and seen even worse thrown at others) that makes this character sound rather tame. *shrugs*

And also the voices in battle get annoying FAST. Seriously:

"I am ready"
"I am ready"
"I am ready"
"I am ready"

Every goddamn round!

Hopefully these issues will be fixed during the final game.
Oh fuck, I totally forgot to point that out in the survey! That annoyed me too. I hope enough people post about it so that you can at least turn it off in the options.

Soapbox Killer

Grand Nagus
Also, the game doesn't show the ten thousandth digit of damage. I just dealt 11,236 damage, and the game only showed 1236 damage, lol.

IncredibleGloriousGrizzlybear-max-14mb.gif

how do you know it was that much?

I'm leveling up not to defeat a boss but to win a challenge against the guy with 5stars.

I don't think I want HP bars either. It'd probably make things too easy and remove a large part of the risk/reward aspect of the combat.

Showing HP bars after defeating an enemy of that type once would fit in with the existing system of revealing weaknesses, though it wouldn't apply to bosses.

Can anybody give me simple directions to find the
Primeval Cavern
?

I went East, as the guards suggested, but I keep running into those guys that says that I can go no further because that's the end of the demo area. Not sure if I'm on the right map or not or if there's a hidden path to find that leads me there?

That was the non-brigand cavern right? You need to use the bottom right exit from the village (compared to the top one that you use to get to the brigand cavern). Then pretty much just go as far east as you can. There is a guy in front of the cave saying it's too dangerous to enter, you need to either (minor spoiler)
challenge and beat him or allure him with Primrose
.

Yea it could use a tad more color, but like even the menus and gear equipment is just so classic, it is great.

And that music, just loving it.

I absolutely love how 2D is alive and kicking, it will never get old for me and I been playing them since their start.

What I love is how this and other games like bravely show that SE still has it.

If it helps: you can switch to Japanese VA or turn it off completely.

Just filled the survey.

My only negative with the game is that the vignette needs to be toned down. The music, gameplay and artstyle are pretty much convincing enough to me to get this game day 1.

I haven't finished the demo yet, but I'm liking what I'm seeing so far. I like the variations in the art style, the combat is deep (though I wish they explained it a bit more) and the story (that I've seen) is compelling.

I look forward to seeing more from this!

Yeah this is a good solution. There are a lot of little fixes I hope the devs make to the game. It's a very solid foundation but in need of lots of QoL improvements.

I'm still not used to the battle mechanics, but pretty interesting so far. You can challenge anyone to a duel. I thought it was funny how when Philip gets kidnapped, his mom is of course freaking out and while she's freaking out you can still challenge Philips mom to a duel. like wat? lol

Sir Olberic the Kind decided it would be a good idea to give dear Phillip's mother a firsthand account of his strength for the purpose of instilling her with the confidence that he is indeed capable of rescuing the strapping young lad.

It takes away from the serious topic and dark tone when the bad guy is a cartoon caricature.

I disagree with this. If anything the election of Donald Trump has shown us is that cartoon villany has often been less crazy then real events.

Imagine the laughter an RPG character would get for being unrealistic if they did a press conference/speech while hiding behind a pot plant in a dark room.

Or if the Leader of a country/nation with the RPG equivalent of Nukes (Dragons???) decided that all of the males in his nation should get the same haircut as himself.

Haven't finished Olberic just yet, but the vignette effect needs to be toned down. Other than that I really like it! I hope it gets the fast forward for fights that Bravely Default had.

Have you played Bravely Default? It's by the same developers. If you haven't, I'd highly recommend picking it up on 3DS. Evokes the same sort of old-school JRPG feel.

I definitely enjoyed the game more with the voice acting completely turned off. It's way faster to read than to listen to it, and it was especially jarring when the canned voice lines didn't (frequently) match up with what was being said. Really made me appreciate the grunts and hums of Breath of the Wild.

The big issue I had with this is that there were several points where the game would swap between scenes being fully-voice-read, you'd get the "mood phrases," or no voice at all, sometimes with very little indication of when or why it was doing so. A harder and more obvious shift in when you'd get pure storytelling and when you'd get random dialog would help, even if that's still a little odd.

The other problem, like you said, is that some of those semi-voiced sections included full sentences, rather than just a quick word or two to establish tone, which I generally don't mind as much. There's a section, for instance, where Helgenish's voice says "You'd take that tone with me?!" while his actual written lines are completely different. That dissonance wouldn't be felt nearly as hard if the voice clip had just been a simple "What?!" to set up his emotional state without really forcing your mind to realize that you're not supposed to be taking too much out of the voice in that moment.

My hope would be that most non-playable scenes feature more voice in the final game, but that could also eat up a ton of space, so if they keep it with the style it's in, there are still a few tweaks they could make that could help make the differences easier to process.

Yeah I also turned the voices off immediately. Interested to see what differs with the protag selection as I'd like to see all the stories intertwine (as opposed to just having other characters join you for no reason).

Welp, this is the Xenoblade of this generation, getting me to play a JRPG when I'm usually not interested. I've never been so turned around by a short demo. The boost mechanic makes the turn-based battles engaging, the art-style and music is amazing, the two stories alone have me interested in what happens next, and the voice acting is actually good!? Take notes Breath of the Wild -_-

Finished both scenarios

- the writing is awful to okay
- the graphics are a weird mix of charming and ugly(the main char sprites and animation could be improved)
- not sure about the combat, felt limited, but the charm and challenge stuff is interesting.
- the music in the dancer scenario was great

Yea this was an odd thing too, good point.

Game gave me real saga frontier vibes. Is there anything to do "post game" besides side quests and
the extra dungeon? No boss in the extra dungeon was a bummer.
