Live-a-Live makes me think of an Animal Crossing-type of game for some reason.

With a name like "Live-a-Live" it's not hard to see why. Either sounds like an Animal Crossing or like some sort of game involving partying.

when i see the name wipeout, it makes me think of that tv show where they made a bunch of assholes traverse impossible obstacle courses suspended above mud

I'll also agree that Wipeout the original racing game series made me think the same when I first stumbled across it.

They do have games of that show though I think.

An entire series of games, apparently.

You'd think games with titles like Super Smash Brother Melee and Super Smash Brothers Brawl would be fighting games.

TBH i initially thought Geometry Wars was a competitive math game.

Skies of Arcadia sounds like a space invaders styled game or bullet hell shooters.
Ratchet and clank sounds like a puzzle game you find on mobile.

SuperHot doesn't scream matrix-like first person shooter. More like a Hot Potato minigame.

Tales of Symphonia doesn't scream JRPG, more like a musical.

Legend of Heroes doesn't scream turn-based JRPG about teenagers/young adults saving a country, more like a Marvel Superheroes action game series.

Gen X

Trust no one. Eat steaks.
Slap Fight is an odd name for a shoot 'em up.

Useless tip. When you start playing, don't touch any controls and let your ship travel unassisted till it blows up. Next life and you'll be granted some of the more powerful weapons.

Racer/shooter hybrid is not the first thing that comes to mind when one hears the title Alleykat.

Andrew Braybrook is a legend, loved all his games bar one, that Morpheus game. His games need to be redone in more modern assets and released as a compilation.

Half Life sounds like you have half of your life to live like a real life simulator game, not a 1st person shooter.

Deus Ex sounds like it ought to be a historical strategy game, regardless of the phrase deus ex machina

And Panzer Dragoon has nothing to do with either tanks nor light cavalry.

Slightly ot, but I was extremely confused when I first heard the name Assasin's Creed: Unity, since Unity is so synonymous with the game
engine. Still can't really read that name without that association in my head.

Destiny.

If you knew nothing else about it, "online shooter RPG" probably wouldn't even be your twentieth guess.

djtiesto

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
Tales Of The Borderlands sounds like an RPG
Kentucky Route Zero sounds like a truck racing game
X-COM sounds like one of those throwaway b-grade Xbox 360 shooters
Bio Hazard Battle sounds like a fighting game with a roster of mutants

I dunno, games with "Tale" or "Story" or synonyms of those words tend to be RPGs.

Nah, that sounds pretty stock to me where the horror genre is concerned.

Yea, I remember knowing instantly what kind of game Silent Hill was going to be just from first hearing its name, with no other details.

Gravity Rush sounds like it would be a physics puzzle game.

Whereas this on the other hand, I legitimately did think was a puzzle game for quite a while.

I can't wait for them to follow up the newest game with Assassin's Creed: Source.

In the same vein: I always found the name "Maximum Carnage" a little too extreme for what it actually was - a superhero beat 'em up. I know it's named after the character, but when I hear "Maximum Carnage" I'm picturing a Doom or Mortal Kombat-esque 90s gore game.

Dead or Alive could be a western bounty hunter game.

Not just the character. Maximum Carnage was also the name of the storyline and it's one of the most profilic Spider-Man storylines ever.

Before seeing it, I assumed half life was some kind of weird jrpg game.

Metroid could habe been the sequel to asteroids.

Bayonetta could bee a sword fighting game.

Spore being an evolutionary strategy game, instead of a third person horror game with zombies, does seem a bit incongruous.
