DOOM (Holiday 2017) and Wolfenstein II (2018) Announced for Nintendo Switch

Can we finally agree that Nintendo is Doomed?

That's definitely a "I counted the pixels and it's running at 640p, but the temporal anti-aliasing solution they're using is solid, so it still looks good on the Switch's screen, and the framerate is a stable 60fps with only a couple of dips, so it's a worthy compromise" face. I've seen it a thousand times before.

Still trying to work out what this face tells us about this DOOM port

Due to my experience with Italians and a recent Soprano rewatch, I can confirm without the shadow of a doubt that's definitely a "Maronn' mia" face, meaning "Wow I can't possibly believe it's running on a Switch screen" face

That face will be studied for generations. Scholars hundreds of years from now will wonder what that man truly felt about the Switch's version of DOOM. One could call it 'mysterious'.

We've finally found it, the Mona Lisa of videogames.

Nah he's got the "the Switch version is running at 12 fps and 30 fps at best when looking at the sky, the screen resolution seems to be 320x240 by counting pixels. The games maps are ported over from the Jaguar version of Doom 1 and it has the lazy cut down graphics from doom 2016" face :p

Anyway, I'm curious- if they do implement motion/gyro controls, how exactly will they work? Zelda's gyro aiming works well because it isn't enabled until you start aiming the bow, likely the same for Skyrim. Is gyro sensing going to be happening the whole time like in Splatoon? I can see that getting a bit irritating, such that you'd need a dedicated button for recentering your aim.

Are there any pure FPS games out there with gyro controls?

Every single one on PC with the Steam controller :D

When I tried Doom with gyro, (and this goes for other FPS and TPS) the gyro becomes "active" only while you touch the right touchpad. So you can still use the touchpad to aim, but the gyro only works if your thumb is resting on it.

just use the analog sticks to recenter. It's really not that complicated.

A great setup would be spinning around+looking up/down with the right stick, but you aim the weapon withing the screen with the right Joy Con. Kinda like Resident Evil 4. The motion interface is already implemented in the engine with VFR...

Good point, I've never used the a steam controller so I wouldn't know how it works. That sounds like an interesting way to do it.

Actually yeah that seems pretty simple too. I've just heard that as an excuse for why Splatoon doesn't use both sticks and gyro together (that it gets difficult to constantly recenter).

Here's hoping for gyro either way.

Yeah you gotta wonder if the VR editions engine optimizations will carry over to the Switch, including control schemes. That'd be neat!

I'd take a control scheme like that of Wii FPSs, where you can aim anywhere within the screen, and moving the crosshairs beyond the boundaries makes the view turn around.

And there we go :)

The boring answer: I wanted our video producer (who was coming to the event to shoot over-the-shoulder footage of Doom) to know what the space and lighting situation was like. So I asked Nick to unnecessarily turn around because the back of his head is boring.

On a totally unrelated note, if you had to pick a number from 1 to 100...like say, I don't know...Ok, let's narrow it down. From...30 to 60..Or better yet, 30 or 60. Which would you pick?

On a scale of 30 or 60, I'd say it's more baked potato than triple layer nachoes.

A baked potato is pretty solid compared to 3 nachos, nachos which has two syllables

3x2 = 6

Solid baked potato = solid 30 FPS on potato level hardware.

I have cracked your code, good sir.

A baked potato is safe, but dependable.

Nachos are adventurous, but messy.

We've basically learned nothing here today. I'm gonna' go with a locked 30fps, but who knows.

Baked potatos are also really hot. Doom makes the Switch run super hot, confirmed.

Is that not the face of a man with 3rd degree burns?

I recall that thread... I didn't read all the way through it so I'm not sure what it has to do with people working on streaming/media apps for the Switch but I'll take your word for it!

So you can fist bump the Doomguy in real life!

It won't get there anyway but I was saying it would be hilarious if it outsold the other console versions, not the PC version. I'd imagine the PC version sold far better than the console versions thus far anyway.

It was a joke anyway. But I expect surprisingly strong sales, since the Switch is going to sell like crazy this holiday and this will basically (or actually?) be the only AAA FPS on the system.

There's a post on GoNintendo about Netflix being ready to go on Switch.

https://gonintendo.com/stories/290524-rumor-netflix-customer-service-rep-says-netflix-is-locked-and

Given the Switch appears to have the revised X1 that is also used in the ShieldTV 2, it would be nice if the Switch could do 4K video with HDR when docked.

I believe the Shield TV 2 has 4k HDR support for video playback, and it would be really compelling as a Netflix device if it could be done on the Switch's hardware.

Um, hello? What does this have to do with baked potatoes?

Never seen people froth at the mouth like this over mere preview embargoes.

Well, this is the first "current gen" game to be ported over so I get the hype.

I thought it was made clear Switch supported enhanced colour space, but not HDR? I have zero sources for this, it was in one of the tech threads iirc.
