So Sean Spicer went to the Emmys today...

Yall are ridiculous. Guy is a vanilla asshole. Not every asshole in the world should be excommunicated from society for not being liberal. I wonder if some of yall refuse to talk to your parents or grandparents for voting Reagan. "Defended Hitler"? Can we please not reduce the accusation of being a nazi into a meme so that it actually means something? This is probably part of why Trump can literally be endorsed by nazis and republicans wave it off as liberal propaganda

Sean Spicer was always friends with the media, they considered him "one of the good ones" until he took his new job.

Everything you guys are saying you hate about him and should be justification for him ...not being able to make fun of himself? i guess?... was actually Trump. He was just a mouthpiece. It was a gig he took for the president of the united states.

Let the man be a prop in Colberts comedy, sheesh

....I'm sorry but what? I don't see a single person in this thread giving a shit about whether Spicer is liberal or not. If you think the anger has anything to do with that you're not paying attention.

Showing yet again that outside of giving lip service to gay marriage the rich of the left are worthless cowardly cunts.

Spicer should be living in fear not yucking it up on stage.

He was literally lying on behalf of a Nazi sympathizer. He lied about super fucking damaging things that will have policy consequences, like the number of illegal votes cast for example.

He can fuck right off and its disgusting the way people were yucking it up with him.

Are you truly being honest with yourself here?

Splitting hairs. It doesnt have to be about the literal label to be about his politics.

Guy tried to make an evil dictator seem worse than another evil dictator while elaborating on a retaliation for chemical weapon attacks on his own people. Spun crowd sizes. What about these things truly make it so he doesnt deserve to be the butt of a joke during the emmys? Im sorry but this is not outrageous. The fact that people are getting mad at Colbert and Hollywood is ridiculous. Just more infighting and liberal cannibalism. Its a fuckin joke during a monologue. He even resigned from the position whats the big deal here exactly? Fear that the cripple minded masses will be brainwashed into normalizing nazism? Because they laughed at sean spicer? Like they should have booed him and thrown tomatoes otherwise hollywood just damaged america?

How about he just doesn't get a fucking invite? It reduces real issues that impact people's lives to a stupid game.

Sean Spicer shouldn't have been invited in the first place. He likely got a good amount of money for this rebranding appearance. It was specifically Colbert's idea to invite him. He's back in the public limelight and schmoozed with other popular people. He's likely to get further media appearances. Maybe his own TV show. Jason Isaacs is accurate in comparing him to propaganda ministers.

How many times will people say "liberal infighting" and not come off as asking others to conform and not criticise their own? It's a distraction tactic.

Fuck anyone who had anything to do with him getting on the show, and anyone who took a selfie with him.

Colbert is dead to me.

Why should they show respect for a society that voted someone like Trump into the White House? If you elect a clown don't complain about the circus.

Not following this logic. Hollywood liberals are so mad at the dumb American poors for electing Trump that... They're boosting his propoganda mouthpiece because "fuck you, idiots?"

As far as I'm concerned, anyone who is comfortable schmoozing/taking pictures with Sean Spicer is not an ally. Trump made Colbert the king of late night. Trump keeps Alec Baldwin relevant. Trump gives CNN and MSNBC ratings boosts. They're profiting off this and they seem to be loving it.

I dont really think the audience of the emmys is going to be swayed politically by laughing at sean spicer being made fun of for when he spun crowd sizes. I dont think people need celebrities teaching them who to like and not like and I generally disagree with the notion that the other side should be removed entirely from the conversation for fear of the huddled masses being brainwashed because theyre too stupid to be able to hear uncensored politics. His views represent half the country and as stupid as they might be in your eyes, they are a part of the conversation. And the sooner we realize that being holier than them and refusing to engage doesnt actually help us politically and in fact hurts us, the better. He was a press secretary. They lie and spin for their boss. It was a joke during the emmys. About that exact thing. Making fun of him even. This is not outrageous.

You should always be willing to criticize your own, its peoples priorities that are all fucked up. Infighting is an enemy to unification and thus progress, its a fact, and when you have people attacking their own kind for something as stupid as this, while citing mindshare damage as a cause for outrage, how the hell do you not stop to realize how much more damage it it is causing to have democrats beginning to hate activist figures like Elon Musk and Stephen Colbert and Trevor Noah for jokes or not refusing to engage, than to have a laugh at Sean Spicer without directly admonishing him for fear of imparting the wrong moral "lesson" from a joke at the emmys? This is a valid infighting criticism. Its not that big a deal, and hating colbert and hollywood for it is ridiculous and absolutely a textbook case of liberal cannibalism.

But why pay him? Why? Sean Spicer being there was not necessary to making a joke about Sean Spicier.

One prop I will give to Bill Maher is that he's public in his belief that, while having terrible people like Nazi buffoons in the White House gives him plenty of material, he gets no pleasure out of it, and would prefer a better leader to better jokes.

Pretty much. You could've went with Melissa McCarthy and I don't think the "joke" would lose its premise. It was done to get under the skin of Trump but man did it backfire, especially those selfies with Spicer. And for what? To reach a tie in the worst ratings for an Emmys telecast? Trump has the last laugh and all of us affected aren't laughing one bit.

You think Spicer truly believed that Hitler didn't use chemical weapons when he said that? Alright.

And you think Spicer standing in front of the world, daily, and lying was his secret plan of trying to do the best he could for everyone. Even though he just randomly decided to quit once Trump did something that personally affected him. And that this was all somehow the right thing for him to do, and not only that, but considered a public service. Alright.

Instead of you know

Telling the fucking truth for once and getting people to realize how dangerous peddling Trump's blatant lies as truth really is

If not Spicer then it has to be someone else. That's not the point. Getting the administration on record is. Again, having a press secretary brief the press is not a given and this admin has already tried to move to text only or audio only briefings to restrict the press. People get so mad at the tree's that they don't see the forest.

I would bet money that Spicer's "ignorance" was pure dog whistling to the white supremacists in Trump's base. They do this shit too often and in such a perfect way (so they can deny, and idiots believe them while white supremacists nod their heads knowingly) for it to be a gaff. Who the hell would ever even think to call concentration camps "Holocaust Centers". Wtf? It's not even an easy word to roll off the tongue, and it sounds completely foreign to hear.

Your second paragraph is completely dismissive of Spicer's role in all this. He is an adult. He chooses to make the actions and speak the words he does. He is accountable for the lies he spewed and the people that have been directly hurt because of those lies.

They are not the brightest bunch, I certainly don't rule out ignorance versus some 5D chess that you all maintain is going on.

nekkid

It doesn't matter who we are, what matters is our plan.
I'm late to this particular party, but damn this seems like poor taste.

I could sorta see this self-mockery getting a pass after a few years if he had spilled all the beans, shown remorse, and done serious damage to Trump in the process. But he's done absolutely nothing to earn that right, and thinks that the mockery itself is enough to get people to like him.

And now I'm reading that Colbert enabled this? Ugh.

Trying to deny/diminish the holocaust for the whole country to see and it taking several bad excuses until an apology is not what I would expect from a "vanilla asshole"

This was top cringe for me. Can't stand the trend of late night hosts giving platforms to disgraced liars while giggling sheepishly. I love Colbert, and I like the rest of his hosting, but man this was bad.

So.... are you guys going to be alright with him when he's back to slamming Trump in his monologues, or is he past redemption?

This removes all the bite from those monologues when all it could take is Trump sheepishly making a joke for Colbert to be palling around with him.

I was "eeehhhh" when Colbert invited Scaramucci on his show and made a big deal about it.

But this... this really makes me question Colbert.

So now Colbert is in the same category as Maher, an Islamophobic man who uses the n-word.

Really?

I'd easily argue worst. Colbert is literally making a celebrity out of a man who spewed hatred and revisionist history from his mouth and defended another man who is continually trying to do the same and ruin other peoples lives.

Yeah, I don't like everyone making Spicer into a nice celebrity now.

But neither do Trump supporters, who think he turned on Trump and participated in a Trump roast with liberal Hollywood. Whole thing is weird.

Maybe this is Colbert playing the long game and trying to flip Spicer onto revealing juicy Trump secrets by becoming his friend first.
