Switched to android from iOS, immediately miss imessage :(

Luckily a standard solution that not only does this but also is a better app all-around has been found and is being used by everyone with the US being the exception.
So they should be worrying about the US then. How they haven't managed an imessage equivalent up to know is crazy.

Why use WhatsApp when the company that owns it has their own messenger? Most people here use Facebook messenger, or Google Hangouts. Or now, something like Slack.

Because Facebook messenger requires a Facebook account and linking that account whereas WhatsApp is phone number dependent.

Why would they? The rest of the world moved on, the US can and will catch up- whether it's sooner or later is unknown.

”Joe, you're not going to believe this! There's someone in Lithuania who thinks we should change the app that we all use for Messaging!"

No one cares.

Yeah Europe, Asia, South America, North America barring the US, are Lithuania.

Nothing special about it, in the U.S. everyone and their horse has iMessage. It's something you never even think about. Using SMS/the default texting suite in a device has been commonplace since the mid 2000s, with unlimited/large texting plans being cheap.

It's when a green bubble (SMS) shows up on an iPhone that you feel dirty and weird to be using a two decade old protocol.

Except for everyone without Apple products....

So they can not have a joke dedicated messaging system. That's why they've tried several messaging apps to failure. They want the US install base to catch up to imessage sooner or later.

iMessage is amazing if you have multiple Apple products.

I love being able to reply to a text on my laptop or computer.

Also love being able to answer the phone on the computer.

I personally can't live without those features as I use them every day.

I use WhatsApp too but only for large group texts. It's great for that.

The "messaging system" problem has already been solved like I said. It's just a matter of time before the US catches up and discards iMessage, Hangouts, and SMS.

Also, this condecension towards people who use SMS / not iMessage is fucking weird.

Yeah I don't really get this at all. I use an iPhone, but the majority of people I text message use Android. Who cares if your texts come in a green or blue bubble? So silly.

I'm guessing it's because there's a lot of young kids and early adults here who care about stuff like that? "If you don't have a blue bubble you're not in the cool club!"

Not in the US though, so to my original point, they need to do better.

But, they don't since the solution exists; it's a matter of moving to a proper system the same way everyone moved away from IE those who still use SMS/iMessage on smartphones can move away to better systems.

If you're suggesting that Android should have WhatsApp preinstalled I agree but a better standard solution exists now the same way it does for browsers.

Yeah I got an S8 for work and instantly regretted it. A bunch of us tried to switch but there were a shortage :(

I never adjusted. Facebook messenger works ok, but it got pretty invasive pretty quickly. I'm sure Whatsapp isn't far behind.

I've honestly only seen that in threads like these. People on this forum either act like haters towards iMessage ("wow, I can't believe people really use iMessage"), or act like if they don't use iMessage they aren't part of the blue bubble master race and feel inferior or something. It's dumb. Android has some amazing phones, use the phone and OS that you love.

I really love replying on my watch or iPad or Mac as well. But you should know whatsapp has a MacBook app, sometimes I just log in on that and reply. No whatsapp Watch app or (official) iPad app yet :(.

WhatsApp is better than both.

I do find it somewhat funny that people are using a messaging app discussion as a way to take shots at Apple and/or the US.

In any case, most people out there are using whatever allows them to speak to the most people with the least amount of extra work. Outside of tech based communities like this, most people don't give a shit about SMS or whatever else. They just want to be able to send messages to friends and family. It's been explained time and time again why there hasn't been a migration from stock messaging apps here in the US (SMS has been very affordable compared to other areas in the world).

It amazes me that people actually use iMessage

It's less that they made a decision, and more that everyone has an iPhone in North America and the standard messages app will use iMessage if you're communicating with another iOS user. The bubble turns blue. That's all.

I don't understand though - if I'm sending images and gifs to my android friends, they're seeing them too. So it's...fine?

But yeah, the vast majority of my friends and I use Facebook Messenger and that takes care of that. It's used with the same prevalence that Whatsapp seems to be used in Europe/Asia. But for whatever reason, it's got like zero market share in North America. Most people I chat with haven't even heard of it (or it's "something I heard about while travelling".

A real app that allows you to use continuity or that horrible
Web app?

I feel like some of my friends have purposely left me out if conversations just because I have an Android device and they only chat via iMessage. It's weird that they seem to forget the large amount of people that don't have an apple device.

I guess a web app? I honestly don't know what that is. I just downloaded it off the App Store. It's not as convenient as iMessage because it's not always on (sometimes a blessing, god I fucking hate that ringing nose on my MacBook when a message comes in), but it loads super quick and is 1:1 with whatsapp on my phone. It's a nice option to have.

There's literally no way for you to declare the majority of people love iMessage because it falls back to text when they don't have data and a unmeasurable small amount of people like it because it lets you send big files or has animation features. This is your opinion.

I didn't say the majority of people "love imessage" because it falls back to text. I said the vast majority of people only end up using imessage as their primary messaging service because it integrates with sms.

You seriously think your general apple user would go primarily iMessage if it was totally separated from SMS and they wouldn't be able to use it to message non-apple products? If so you're delusional.

More people have Facebook than have downloaded whatsapp. Why is it so hard for people to understand that the best messaging app is the one that your social circle uses?

When android users send me videos via text message I get garbled, unwatchable, shit.

iMessage just works

TechnicPuppet

Nothing! I said nothing!
By restricting social circles to iPhone use your forcing people to buy Apple products and restricting product choice for everyone.

The more people that need to buy them so they don't get left out the more everyone else has to get on board and get one too.

It's surely against everyone's self interest for this too be the case. Of course Apple could release iMessage on android if they liked...

Bro are you getting paid by WhatsApp or something?

I always find it weird how some people are so elitist about WhatsApp. I agree that the idea of moving away from SMS is probably a good one, but to act like it is a better experience I just don't see it. It just feels like the MySpace of chat apps, it's so ugly and feels so old, even though the core features are forward thinking. To me iMessage is a dramatically nicer experience, by far the best experience of any chat/messaging app I've used.

Amen. I swear the posters on here are paid to try advertising it. It won’t succeed in the US. It’s too damn ugly looking and poorly named.

You realize depending on the country you go to, whatsapp might not be the most popular thing? You go to India, it’s whatsapp or Facebook. China, wechat. Indonesia, probably Line. USA, iMessage. Then you have hangouts and other services.

Also iMessage is perfectly capable so people don't go looking for chat solutions unless required by circumstance.

This. Such an embarrassingly bad name. “WhatsApp!” Ugh. That’s a major part of the annoyance.

How many of those other apps work on only work on one phone type?

That's the comprehension issue here, that people would shun friends, family and acquaintances that can't afford or don't want an iPhone.

Less than 50% of smartphones in america are iphone though. Weird thing to constrict yourself to mms/sms with most of the cellphone population.

imessage is blackberry messenger part 2. Except back then there literally wasnt anything to compete against BBM so there was a reason to use it.

I message about 20 people or so regularly, I’d say. All of them-with the exception of one guy-are on iPhone. He’s on Android. Am I supposed to change everything to avoid “shunninng” one person? C’mon, dude that’s a ridiculous statement.
