I completely forgot you have to pay to play online on consoles

Looking back, I'm ashamed I ever paid for PSN multiplayer on PS4.

PSN is absolute trash. It goes down unexpectedly multiple times per month, and each time lasts anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours. And there's no "sorry" or extension of the subscription when that happens.

Now with playing online exclusively on PC, I pay nothing and all the different services never go down. Honestly, I've been playing on PC for a year and not once has Steam or Origin or Battle.net just decided to go offline unexpectedly. And with Steam—where I play most of my online games—I have achievements, I can change my username for free, I can set my profile picture to whatever I want without paying for new pictures, and all my saves get synced automatically to the cloud. Oh and downloading a game on Steam takes me 1/3 the time that PSN does.
Steams is so good too. Close game on desktop, open on laptop immediately playing the same save. No intervention, no fuss. And its like 500MB of storage PER GAME
It's even more than that actually -- the developer can set how much space their saves are expected to take.

How do I justify it?

I want to play online.

It costs money.

So I pay it.

That's about as deep as most people on consoles take that train. Everything else is just a perk that helps offset (often completely) the costs.

I don't sit here and think, oh, but PC is free (except on the games it isn't) why am I wasting money!?! Because that's a moot point. There's a ton of things that have cheaper/free alternatives that I couldn't give less of a shit about. I play on consoles. I also play on PC. They have different costs. That's it.

Perfectly sums up where I am at with it as well, while I am not struggling for money at all there are always bigger issues than if I can honestly feel good with myself for purchasing PS+ when I need to play something online. It's required so I pay it, then it lapses, then I pay it.

Nintendo makes you use your mobile for online chat, Sony and Microsoft are probably laughing.

A paraphrased version of my first experience of that 'solution':

Me: "Hi"
Friend: "Hey!"
Me: "Huh, cool, this thing works, want to play Splatoon?"
Friend: "Yeh sure"
*starts matchmaking*
*voice cuts out as we're put on different teams*

So I phoned him so we could continue talking.
Really is a terrible way of doing it.

I haven't paid for console online services for a while now. I'm just not a multiplayer gamer. If I want to play something online I'll just get it for PC.

I wish we'd get some cooler benefits already.

Im sour that PS3 games are still supported and wish Sony would move on already. Id feel a lot better if we were getting quality PS+ titles.

Id move to PC, but PC communities tend to be smaller. Games like Battlefield 1 are a fraction of what PS4 users are, and it sucks

Yea it sucks, but I’ve had my ways around it for years. For Xmas/Bday I always get renewal cards from family, when they ask what I want. Hell I even get some off Gaffers in the BST thread with their money 😂

PSN is trash fire. Once I realized I was essentially paying for just to play Destiny I hard bailed once D2 was confirmed for PC. I can't answer your question OP. For me, there is no added value in regular assortment of uninteresting ps+ titles and discounts available on PC that aren't behind a paywall. Don't even get me started on the download speeds

It's not cheap running a network to service millions of users. A fee is more than understandable. Not everything can be free.

I notice discounted PSN cards (usually) being sold around/during Black Friday, so that's usually when I stock up on them. Occasionally "bargain sites" (cheapassgamer.com, Warrio64 on Twitter, etc etc.) will post links when various stores have them on sale.

YMMV, but it isn't hard at all to find a subscription card way below MSRP if you look hard enough.

Buyer beware. I bought one of those cards about two years ago back when ebay was having a big sale and Kotaku posted a PSA. Got it and found out the code had been claimed. Tried to get a refund and got laughed out of Ebay and Sony support.

I decided that I am not going to pay for 3 consoles to go online once Nintendo starts charging. I let my Plus sub lapse because I only turned on my PS4 for two games thus year - Persona 5 and Horizon Zero Dawn. Total waste of money to pay that fee for a console I barely use.

Most online games are P2P. And when they use dedicated servers, they aren't provided by Sony.

Also, Sony already charges publishers a bandwidth fee.

Platform-holders charging users for online play will never not be bullshit.

This is very true for some smaller/more niche games or simply games that dont gain traction on PC and are typically console games but for the game you quote...

Is there a difference? Definitely. Is it a difference that you're going to actively notice or that is going to disallow you from enjoying the game? Definitely not.

I feel console users (not you in particular TimeEffect) like to brag about the communities on their games while it has little to no impact to their online experience.

There should be a law where a company providing this kind of service MUST let the user know that the servers are not run by them and in some cases are even unexisting. Playing the biggest playstation franchise on P2P while having to pay for the "service" is simply put, amazing.

That, discounts locked behind a paywall, lol....oh, and "free" games.

Free rentals, sure. But not free games.

Paying to play online really needs to end but you're essentially paying double for a console with that paywall so it won't end.

That new console isn't a $400 5 year investment anymore, it's $700. Makes the original PS3 price a little more appealing.

Correct me if i am wrong, but Xbox games stay in your library even if your gold lapses, does it not? In that case, they truly are free games.

I can never justify it. I don't want or need the "free" games etc. I have enough games already.

I just want multiplayer and I already pay for internet.

So yeah single player exclusIves are pretty much all I play on consoles. Everything else is PC.

Can't speak for Xbox but I'm fine with paying for PS plus at this stage. Of course it'd be excellent to be able to play online for free, but in any case you'll usually get enough decent monthly games to be satisfied.

No, it hasn't been that way since this the Launch of this Gen. It's a subscription service. The service features end when you quit paying for it and If you're paying for, it's not free.

The use of the word "free" is nothing but marketing. Way too many consumers have fully embraced it and regurgitate it to one another.

For the longest time thats why I never had an Xbox, now look at me all of my consoles have online subscription fees! Not the Switch yet... but soon.

You've still got to run servers for hosting the friends lists, game saves, player matchmaking, etc. Not to mention most services are giving you games each month as part of being a subscriber. A fee is more than understandable, now whether the fee is too expensive is another story. I believe the fees should be around $39.99 per year.

You would think people would be upset that the retail value of their "free" Plus games has dropped considerably since Sony put multiplayer behind it, especially since the price of the paywall itself has gone up. Plus games no longer come anywhere close to being worth the subscription, they're just there to soften the blow of essentially doubling the price of the console.

They do for me.

I just went through the 2017 list, which still has several months to go... the list below is only partial, I didn't include games I wouldn't have paid for [even if i would end up liking them].

Even after I remove the ones I already owned [Until Dawn, etc], and assign 'what I would have paid' [generally in the $2-3 range for indies] I'm almost fully paid for already. And I have a lot of games not included in the list that i'll try even though I never would have bought, and I might end up liking some.

I buy a lot of games, so I've also probably made my $50 back in discounts over the year so far. [meaning, my savings have paid for my sub before I even got -any- games]

I also enjoy the 'feel' of ps+ announcements, so being part of that does have some value for me.

There is absolutely no way I don't get a ton of value out of ps+.

[the partial list I would have paid for given the right price:]
Rigs
Infamous
Just Cause 3
Until Dawn
Game of Thrones
Neon Chrome
Tales from the Borderland
Killing Floor 2
Tearaway Unfolded
Severed
Not a Hero
LBP3
The Swindle
Titan Souls
This War of Mine
Downwell
Strike Vector VX
Day of the Tentacle

The huge library I have from Games with Gold is more than worth it. If they took online play out of the Xbox Live Subscription I would still pay the 3 bucks a month for it.

It does suck, but I personally don't subscribe to PS+ for online multiplayer since I'm not too keen on multiplayer in general. I subscribe to it for the monthly games, which... yeah, I haven't been playing during this past subscription year. I only beat Journey and Tearaway Unfolded, both of which I loved, then played some of Resident Evil, Stories: The Path of Destinies, and ABZÛ. I want to finish the last two but my subscription's about to finish in... shit, it might be up now, actually. Are these 5 worth $10 each to justify my subscription? Hell no.

I am kind of regretting this past year now, actually. But I couldn't have played Overwatch without it, so there's that. I didn't have a gaming PC when I bought it, and I actually prefer aiming with analog sticks than a mouse, probably because I played way more FPS games on PlayStation consoles than I did on my old PC that could only play the occasional.

Okay, I'm actually starting to rethink this whole thing. I could probably save more money with PSN and Steam sales now that I've got a gaming PC. Only real problem is that I won't be able to play Overwatch. Huh. This sucks. I'll still eventually subscribe to play Overwatch, sadly. The when will just depend on when they've got a "free" game I really want. I did get Uncharted 3, Rogue Legacy, inFAMOUS First Light, Transistor, and Resogun with it during the previous years, though, which was definitely worth the subscription for me. I also managed to get Resogun (which I love!) for free, permanently, through some bug of sorts on PS Store, so there's that.

This past year was pretty shit, but the monthly lineup seems to be getting better, so maybe it'll be worth it for me again. Maybe not. Just gotta wait and see.

What a load of condescending crap, "regurgitate'. No, it's just most people are not particularly pedantic and innately understand the concept of 'sunk cost'. People that use the word know what 'free' means, and know what 'subscription' based mean, they just aren't pedantic enough to care because 'free' is a perfectly viable word. Just like if you ask 'hey, should we rent a movie tonight' and someone responds, 'nah, let's save money and watch something free on netflix'. Both individuals are perfectly aware they -pay- for Netflix, but they understand that is a sunk cost. And it's easier than responding 'nah, let's save money and watch something we already paid for via subscription on Netflix'. 'Free' is not only the socially acceptable word, it's the one that works best... and it's also actually correct when sunk costs are taken into consideration.

One group of consumers is engaging in a behavior that allows these companies to continue anti consumer behaviors on their end. Of course members of the other group of consumers, which refuses to put up with it, will complain from time to time.

It's not too dissimilar in principle from how those who help perpetuate the microtransaction loot box mentality are shit on around here.
Funny thing is that many who are being condescending (and sorry you are being flat out condescending) tote the "value" of PC gaming and how it's awesome they will never have to pay for online play.

So those on consoles who do pay have zero effect on you. Zero.

While your loot box analogy can affect everyone no matter what platform is their preferred one.

And I'm going to be blunt, since it's my money and I have enough of it to afford what I want to spend it on in this unnecessary hobby; I prefer to pay for online play over have to mess with PC gaming at this point. I may change that stance in the future, but that is my decision to make what's best for me. Some of you guys really don't understand this while standing on your soapbox

In what universe does anyone call what they watch on Netflix free. Even your example doesn't make sense.

I want receipts on people talking like that about subscriptions.

It's the equivalent of someone saying 'i don't need to buy the newest game releases because I can play WoW for free'

when that makes zero sense and anyone saying that would get laughed out of the building.

And to be really honest. I would rather pay for online gaming on console and have a 100% hacking and cheating free system like we have than playing on PC for free were every multiplayer game is flooded with hacker and cheater.
Fuck that.

Ignorance is bliss.

Xbox 360 games stay in your library. Xbox One games are rentals just like Plus games.

Ah got it. Thanks for the clarification. My Gold lapsed, and I noticed some games still there, assumed it was all of them.

I just logged onto my Xbox One to play video games alone for the first time in years. It has been a Netflix/HBO machine for the past two years after buying a decent graphics card.

Well buddy let me tell you this is progress, on the fucking 360 you had to pay for the live subscription to be allowed to use Netflix.

I know that I've called it free in the past, like in the context of 'Should we rent a movie or just watch something for free on TV or Netflix'. We both know it isn't 'free', but in this instance we're using free as shorthand for 'not needing to immediately spend any more money since we've already paid for it and it's just there'.

I rarely play online. I bought PS Plus during the PS3 era for the games and stuff like Qore. Most of the games I've gotten for free on PS4 I haven't played. However the PS Plus discounts on games has made it worth keeping.

Xbox Live is cheap and offers a lot, I have no issues paying and haven't for 10+ years now.

I have a PC too where I do some gaming and while I can do just about everything on PC for free that I can do on Xbox, the experience definitely isn't as streamlined / organized.

I just finally agreed to play with my friend and his cousin in ranked 3v3 Rocket League and, upon getting the invite, I get redirected to an add about Xbox Live premium prices.

How the fuck do you all do it? And how the fuck do they get away with charging for one of the most basic features of the internet?

I can't believe I forgot about this.
Something about this post has me curious.

If you haven't played a game on your Xbox for two years before today........and have only been gaming on a PC since then. How, when, why did you have Rocket League on your Xbox and not PC?

I enjoyed Destiny 2 so much I actually got a year of Xbox live. Over the past 5 years I dabbled and got the month free or $1 here and there, but actually made the first year-long plunge again since 2012.

Actually being able to keep 24 360 games over the year, playing any previous/new gold games and re-selling any 360 duplicates from my physical collection made this a go for me, for one year at least.
