DOOM (Holiday 2017) and Wolfenstein II (2018) Announced for Nintendo Switch

Can we finally agree that Nintendo is Doomed?

Is it common for Switch games to only be shown off in handheld mode at such events?

IIRC the Skyrim demos were also handheld only, so it might just be a Bethesda choice. I guess the novelty here is it being playable on a handheld, so they don't want people focusing on docked mode too, since other consoles do that better.

Are you saying that Gaf is overreacting about a video game's technical performance??

Anyway, I'm one of those crazy people who need to see two videos side by side to determine if they're 60 or 30 so this won't bother me at all. I'm sure a lot of the "no buy" people will also change their mind once it actually comes around to launch time.

Thanks, sir!

This is true. Personally I can instantly tell if a game runs at 60fps by playing it. Looking most of the time. Best example is when I was playing MH4U on n3DS and was wondering why it felt much smoother and more fluid than other MH games since I knew the game was mostly around 30fps. Didn't realize till watching a late df video that the game ran uncapped and n3DS pulls mid 40s to low 50s. MHG in comparison felt like shit at a capped 30fps.

Play enough games and you can just kind of tell. Anyway, it's $80 canadian. Lil too much for me given it's a year late and coming out mid december after Xenoblade 2. Already buying Revelations 1 and 2 as well. Maybe I can find it reduced down the line.

FIFA was only ever demoed in handheld mode too.

Gamescom had TV stations.

Nah I remember trying to find handheld off screen footage for Switch and only finding TV footage. Like hello, what's the point?

60fps would have been ideal but i'm still buying this. Most versions of Doom that you have ever played have been 30-35fps even on PC. Doom 2016 is probably actually faster than the original but we don't know whether you can still adjust the FOV so it might be less of an issue than we expect.

I still want Doom 64 to be included as a bonus.

Gotta consider how you want your game marketed, expecially upon first impressions.

Running Doom on Switch in docked mode - however solid the results are - won't be an impressive a headline as "2016 Doom...Portable!"

Docked details will inevitably come, and - however impressive they are - won't negate the fact that you can get better at-home Doom experiences on other platforms, right now too! So it's better to drum up your Switch version selling points.

You know, I hope Nintendo goes the dock upgrade route in the future(additional computational device that adds performance aka their patent) so we can get some
better docked mode results. I think the handheld version right now is pretty powerful
already.

I'll still triple dip for Doom(Steam and PS4 Pro then Switch for on the go) and also pick up Wolfenstein to support Bethesda. We fans have been complaining about third party support every damn time a Nintendo system comes out, so I'll make sure to support them when they offer quality ports.

Also, the Digital Foundry video is down. So what were the results? All I picked up on from posts in here(I just woke up) is that it is 30fps in handheld mode?

I'd think it'd still look pretty darn good on the Switch's smaller screen but that's just me.

Personally I can tell between 30 and 60 fps, but both are perfectly acceptable for me. I've never cared about running the very best and for people who do I wonder why they don't exclusively game on PC

This looks pretty fucking amazing to me. It's almost hard to believe. It's like back before launch when people were photoshopping dream games on Switch templates, but it's real.

Boy, I know it is 30fps and offscreen, but man does it look good!

Pretty amazing that the Switch is able to put this out at this level. I would be willing to seriously compromise the visual fidelity for 60fps, but what they managed to achieve here is not bad - it's pretty amazing.

I'm one of the few, I don't know why but 60 frames in certain games make me have a headache/vertigo.

I like Doom on PS4, I know is 60 and fine - I also love both destiny I know is 30 and fine

Not sure why people are crying the videos show it looks and runs great even at 30fps, maybe I'm not as picky like the rest of GAF but portable Doom. I'll take it!

Quoting again, I nearly forgot. Nobody is mentioning anything about Motion controls.
Was nobody there to answer questions about that or are there none implemented?
Or is there another NDA?
The guys in the GameExplain video asked about it but it seems the reps had indicated there wouldn't be any extra features along those lines for the Switch version. Which is a shame if true.

This looks...great! I'm saying that without trying to compare it to the original releases. I've played DOOM on my PC, and I already know this is going to be better for me. I'm just not much suited to sitting on my couch, dedicating long stretches of my time to a game, like I used to be.

As long as they balance the gameplay encounters a bit with the framerate change and they can iron out any spikes, I think it will be completely fine.

Damn! I can cope with 30fps somehow since this is portable and all that. But without motion controls I might not even bother.

This game would really benefit from fast motion controls or at least motion supported aiming like in Zelda. Not that you have to be incredibly precise, but coming from the PC version to the Switch and from KB/M to motion would maybe somehow work for me, but to right stick to aim - might as well wait for a big sale at that point.

Not a fan of this decision.

I wouldn't expect motion control FPS on Switch. Recentering the gyro all the time due to drift would get annoying.

Well, this would be an option, so you wouldn't have to use it if it annoys you. Works fine for Splatoon 2 e.g. and should be a standard option for Switch shooters.

I really hope they are able to add motion controls before release (or in a patch) but it looks fantastic nonetheless. Way better than that footage from the Direct even.

I think it was a gamexplain video, or the preview video by nintendo world report TV? they mentioned they couldn't find options for motion controls in menus, but they did find out that with the joycons detached you could shake one of the joycons to do melee attacks.

This might sound dumb.

But is there away I can hide Switch icons? or move them? I would not want my brother to see it there and then ask lol

Is there a benefit on digital or physical when it comes to the icons? I notice my physical games stay there even when not on the cart.

You can get rid of them by deleting game data (save data not affected). Moving cannot be done manually.
