Star Trek Discovery - official trailer in OP, 15 episodes ordered, premieres 9/24

These are some damn good impressions. I'm no longer cautiously optimistic. Went through Voyager, DS9, and Enterprise for the first time this year in preparation for Discovery and am so into the Trek universe that it's probably my favorite show now. Ended up enjoying all three of those.

Yes! Loved the embargo freak out now followed by these positive reactions. It's amazing how much pressure people have put on this so I'm glad it seems like they've nailed it. Hope this means we get more tv Trek in the future too.

I can't see how this doesn't get a season 2 at least, netflix paid through the nose for the international rights, so cbs already broke even. if it does well enough here or internationally, netflix will just fund another season, lord knows they have the money.

glad to see it's getting some positive reactions though.

Don't ever read the expanded universe novels for Star Trek then... because if you think Voyager killed Borg... the Books both figuratively and literally did so in the stupidest ways imaginable.

I recently read the books that finished up the Borg in the EU. Holy crap. They were beyond awful how they resolved the Borg and their origin.

The origin wasn't awful IMO. Not great, but I could see that being played out in Trek... but the literal dues ex machina was stupid, cheap, and absolutely pointless. It throws out all of the work they did during the series to weaken and beat the borg. I'd have much rather seen the freed borg eventually overthrow/destroy the borg. Not only would that feel much more earned, it'd lead to far more interesting story lines.

What happens to the freed borg after the collective collapse? This would be a HUGE universe wide crisis as trillions of people who look like mechanical freaks have to choose between starting over with their fellow freed borg, or trying to reintegrate with their home species knowing they'll face huge discrimination and other issues. There'd almost certainly be military minded former borg that would want to use the technology to conquer as well.

Holy crap there could have been SO MUCH done with such an amazing setup, and instead...
Nah brahs, we got the borg. They're cool with us we're just going to take them and never be seen again. Universe saved!

Damn that would have made for a great post-VOY show lol

I'm looking forward to seeing what this is, but my hopes aren't super high. There should be an OT cos I'm probably gonna stick around all season unless it's aggressively bad.

But him getting a writer's credit doesn't mean things weren't changed and parts rewritten after he left. If the series changed direction they'd obviously change Fuller's episodes to fit that new direction.

But I don't really care who wrote what, all I want is the show to be good and somfarmit seems to be very good.

I just want it to be good too. I was just refuting the other poster's claim that Bryan Fuller had "absolutely nothing to do" with what we're getting. Because he did.

There is a second writer credited on both of these premiere episodes so it likely was partially rewritten, but not to the point of completely diluting his contributions or else he would no longer be credited. He also has the "story by" credit on the first episode.

With the nacelle changes I've become fine with it. Those were the biggest issue giving it an awkward shape. The saucer holes seem overdesigned and superfluous but not a deal breaker. I'm glad they took some feedback.

Now if only the bridge wasn't a bluegasm.

And why is it brown? The NX-01 had a slight copper tint to it but nothing like this.

2017: "Doug Jones' dialogue in this show is kind of ridiculous."
2020: "I'm glad the writers eased up a bit and let Doug Jones make fun of his early dialogue choices."
2026: "You should check out Star Trek: Discovery. The first season's kinda rocky, though."

Continue the trend, Discovery. Continue the trend of improvement over time.

Yep. The 1st season of DS9 was a kind of a mixed bag, but damn, if you make it to "Duet" you'd find that the show just might be something special, and then the series starts to slowly become god-tier.

Well, I don't think we should read too much into the paint on a small toy to judge the exact tone.

The NX Enterprise's copper tint versus the Columbia's cooler steel hue was meant to invoke progression toward the grey/white of the 1701 so going back to a tan color does seem a bit anachronistic, however there are plenty of examples in life of technology in testing that doesn't reach the mainstream for decades. Plus materials and paint jobs are pretty variable in today's military equipment, so why not with DSC?

It's not a big deal to me.

I don't have sufficient hope to do one, but I'll be there day one to participate. Though from the sounds of it I'll have to use a vpn to watch it on Netflix. Stupid CBS app.

Ok, I will be watching. My hype was below zero but now I'm excited again. Good thing I can watch it on netflix too.

Just heard about the CBS subscription requirement in the US. Do they really expect people to sign up for it to watch?? I feel like viewership is gonna be really low

They do expect it. Discovery was greenlit for this exact purpose, to headline CBS streaming. It's similar to Voyager in that regard. Voyager was created because Paramount wanted to launch a network, UPN, and they needed a killer show. That's why Voyager was produced just 2 years after DS9 launched, and also why DS9 became awesome. Paramount poured all its attention and money into Voyager, while DS9 was sort of left alone. It freed the creative team up to make decisions without corporate interference and was a blessing. Although the shows popularity at the time suffered because of it. Voyager meanwhile was the a clusterfuck of corporate interference and bad showrinning Trek has ever had.

No idea if this streaming thing will work out. And if it does, let's hope Discovery avoids Voyagers issues.

You can sign up for a free month (At least it's currently up)

Which means you'll get 5 episodes for free and if you really like it you can pay for the remaining two/three months to finish the series, or just sign up when the whole series is up and binge watch it in a month.

Despite the positive reception of the premiere I'm still going to be cautiously optimistic. That said, I will watch it, even if it's bad, because it's Trek and I'll be damned if I don't watch my Trek.

Voyager wrecked them for me.

I would put part of the blame onto First Contact. It was a solid movie, but it also was where the Borg Queen originated. And by giving the Borg a face (that isn't just some "avatar" for some sort of communication like Locutus), they already lost a lot of what made them such a scary, threatening alien.

Voyager did do a number on the Borg as an enemy of course, but it also salvaged parts of it with Seven of Nine. And I also can only echo that the Borg episode on Enterprise was good as well. Been re-watching that one recently, thought it was a good leadup to Discovery which takes places between it and TOS.

I'm going to get probably the first of these when it comes out, but I'm not happy they've decided to make the Discovery ships their own subscription separate from the existing Star Trek Starships collection that's been going on for 4 years. We're 108 issues in, along with a bunch of specials in which they managed to work in Kelvin timeline ships but they apparently couldn't do the same thing with Discovery.

Wait, you have 108 models of Trek ships? How many rooms do you need to store/display them?

I had that subscription for a couple months but I quickly realized they take up a lot of room [plus they started to get into sokme ships I didn't care about). I have a few on my desk at work though and might pick up the Shenzhou when they get to it.

Looks aside, what possible sense would it make to have a saucer in two pieces like that? Connected by 4 tiny spokes, no less.

You've greatly decreased the interior space of the saucer yet you've also make it structurally weaker and made it more expensive to build because you have more outside surface area.

But less expensive to build because there's less internal area. :p

Overall it looks more sturdy than the original Enterprise. Can you imagine if that thing was a new design these days? People would be shaking fists over its structurally weak neck and nacelle pylons.

Is it premiering on non-US Netflix at the same time as on CBS and it's All Access thing? Or do we have to wait a week like with Designated Survivor?

EDIT: Nevermind, just read that it will be available 24 hours after All Access. Booo.
