NYT: “Donors are furious” over the Republican's inability to repeal Obamacare

The supreme court's ruling on Citizen's United threw the doors open to funnel as much money as possible into politics and made it perfectly normal for companies and rich individuals to buy laws. It's the worst thing to happen to our government in as long as I can remember and I'm not sure it will ever be over turned in my lifetime.

Trump took it a step further and made these people part of the administration.

It’s this simple.

Once you give an entitlement you can not take it away. Because voters would vote you out of office.

The only choices now are 1. Fix the ACA 2. Single payer

They're gonna be really pissed when they have to donate to these guys anyway.

Who the fuck else is gonna carry their shit?

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
empty threats.

what other horrible group of politicians are they going to donate to instead?

They will instead spend on other primary candidates. The worry is not that the money disappears, it just funnels into others pockets. A new crop of shitheels bought and paid for to try yet again for corporate breaks.

That's what they get for screaming about Obamacare destroying the country for eight years without having a better plan. Though they were probably hoping Hillary would win and save them from having to do anything.

Lose-lose: They don't repeal it, they have no money and the democrats cream them. They do repeal it and voter fury will lead to democrats creaming them.

Nah, the donors will either cough up in the end or find even more odious candidates to foist into the spotlight.

Fuck these assholes. Real world villains that don't give a fuck about people dying and having their lives destroyed just to make a quick buck.

This worries me. If this thing passes, it will be because of donors. Hopefully everything works out.

John McCain isn't up for reelection till 2022 and he will probably die before then.

Lisa Murkowski also isn't up for reelection till 2022. She's also so safe in Alaska that she can get primaried and still keep her seat (she literally lost a primary but won reelection as a write in).

Rand Paul is also not up for reelection till 2022 and is positioning himself so that he's the only real conservative while everyone else is a RINO.

Susan Collins isn't up for reelection till 2020. She's always been considered a RINO and doesn't seem to be afraid of ultra right wing donors.

How can they come up with a better plan? Isn't Obamacare pretty much a Republican idea?

This helps explain why the most resistant senators are McCain (who won't run again) and Murkowski (who doesn't need donor support to win her seat).

With money winning elections, the system selects for people that do what donors want. (And this affects both parties)

Yup. It's basically impossible to come up with a plan that is both better and more right wing than Obama care. Cover less people and costs go up for high risk populations.

That opening sentence. Is Chik-fil-A one of their donors too? Imagine if they threatened them and called this meeting their last supper.

There are some Republican ideas. Medicaid expansion is probably the biggest part though, and it certainly wasn't their idea. And it is also the one that's giving them most trouble.

Anyway, it is literally impossible to come up with a plan that is better than Obamacare and more right wing. Hence their problem.

Who knew they campaigned on a promise to repeal, took money from donors and had no intention of ever actually doing fuck all about the ACA and just wanted money and power?

I'm shocked!

Republican donors could stuff their money in my butt and it would be more effective than giving it to the psychotic children running that party.
Thought about this for a minute, the math checks out.

Too bad for them that McCain, Paul, and Murkowski aren't up for reelection until 2022, and Susan Collins 2020.

That’s what’s so dumb about this bill. It’s bad policy but it was also bad politics. Only 1/3 of the Senate is up for re-election in 2018, and it’s mostly Democrats. When the cuts start to actually hurt in 2020 and 2022, republicans will have a lot more to answer for.

If I was a Republican, I’d rather deal with some vague threat of a primary 3 or 5 years from now than deal with trying to explain to my constituents why their premiums are up 40% and their insurance sucks.

Theoretically it should be simple math to think that 1) the donors will come around because they don’t have that many options anyway or 2) some kind of bipartisan fix might placate some of them.

Bitch, GAG on that Chik-Fil-A. That’s all the party might be able to afford if it gets as bad as this implies.

They should run for office themselves, show their faces and be accountable

They can create The Money Party or something like that

Huh? What did I say? Did I screw up again? :(
There's a massive investigation currently going on because a foreign power has influenced our elections yet these multinational corporations are openly controlling our government.

So who are they going to blame other than themselves when they get nothing done despite having control of every branch?

Jews
Blacks
Soros
Globalists
RINOs
Leftists
Marxists
Women
College graduates
College dropouts
Millennials
The free press

These disgusting pigs will go to their graves blaming everyone except themselves.

Must be weird for then to not be able to buy their way into bullshit legislation for once.

According to the article, this is effects on both large and small donors. They dropped from a record setting $7 million in donations in March to $2 million in both July and August.

And, as the article mentions, Trump's recent battles with the Senate majority leader will probably lead to further declines.

Such unfortunate "people," stricken with grief and rage to learn that they might miss an opportunity to kill the poor while further lining their pockets.

this is their real constituency right here. The American public doesn't want to repeal ACA by like 85% or something, but who cares about what the public wants when we gotta keep the donors happy

Already rich as fuck and they want to kill off poor people just to have even more money. We should tear down those Confederate statues and put up guillotines in their place.

Ryan's consistent "we're doing something! Check out our website that shows how much we've done! It's the Senate's fault!!" really makes sense now. It was all a message to his donors.

They said Mr. Gardner did not specifically urge approval of the so-called Graham-Cassidy health proposal that Republicans were considering bringing to the Senate floor next week. He was seen as speaking more generally and mainly looking forward to the coming debate over tax cuts.

Just as I thought. These donors don't care about Graham-Cassidy, they care about the obvious inability to pass serious legislation. TAX legislation, that is.

Makes sense. I just can't see someone wasting money on a primary candidate against someone who voted yes and I can't see most of the "no" voters giving a shit.

I mean Murkowski already lost a GOP primary and still won a write-in campaign against her own party. I doubt she is scared.

McCain ain't gonna run.

So what is the threat? Trying to knock out Rand Paul or Collins? Don't see that working.

Try punishing people like Cornyn who are basically soldiers?

I dunno. Sounds like a dumb use of money that just ends up seeing more disloyalty.

I have to go to German for a word that encompasses this level of self-defeating, infighting-filled, ineptness, and wrong-headedness: unheimlich. It is wrong, it is unreal, it should not BE on any metric of anyone's. Their only real claim to anything is being Not Liberal and Not Democrat. That's it. And the Mango Golem gave said Dems a big "fuck you conservatism" victory last week.

If the Dems could actually run campaigns right at the local and national level (see the other thread), the GOP would and should be out of power most everywhere. I like to rattle Always-R cages that that's the only reason that circa-2009 existance isn't the current reality.

That's what they get for screaming about Obamacare destroying the country for eight years without having a better plan. Though they were probably hoping Hillary would win and save them from having to do anything.

Winner winner, chicken dinner.
