Pinned notes, the Safari cookie/ad changes, and Google Photos catch-up changes all look pretty great.

Interested in what that new file system brings to the table as well.

That said, can't upgrade yet. Need the IT folks to clear the release which usually takes a month or two.

Wonder if this fixes the log-out bug with full screen video I had with Sierra (rolled back to El Cap never looked back)

Gonna backup my laptop and do a fresh install, see how it looks

So this is going to auto upgrade all your files to the new system?

If so I think I will wait a bit. I have terabytes of photos and videos for clients on my machine.

Positive things:

1) Graphics performance on my 2016 15" Pro seems better across the board. Game performance is improved and even UI performance when on the integrated GPU drops frames way less than before.

Negative things:

1) I literally can't tell a single other meaningful difference between this and Sierra. I guess I noticed APFS when I dragged the Xcode 9 GM from my Downloads to my Applications and it happened instantly. That's about it.

2) The main new feature I'm interested in - external GPU support - isn't actually shipping until "spring".

Damn, I'm still rocking El Capitan on my mid-2015 retina MBP (aka the last great Macbook apple made)

Haven't had a compelling reason to upgrade yet, I may jump to HS just to keep from falling too far behind, but in general OSX releases are solid enough for me to use them for several years in a row without issues.

How is it a whole lotta nothing?
Because Dynamite thinks that upgrades are only worth it if you can see a bunch of flashy new changes.

The Metal integration into Core Animation and the resulting improvements with animations of Mission Control is worth it.

Been using the beta for a while and the UI is much smoother on my mid 15 retina 15". Especially with things like switching spaces, the frame rate feels much higher.

Safari gets substantially better battery life (I.e. a few extra hours)

But I find it a pretty miserable experience and the extension stack sucks so I ended up back in Chrome

Does Chrome make mac more heated?

Will the battery difference matter if Im plugged in 99% of the time?

Im too scared to use chrome because I dont want my battery getting worn out

The Safari updates seem neat. Other than that it looks like a boring update indeed. Lots of behind the scenes work that is probably a great improvement but I wonder if I'll notice anything different.

so do i have to format my drive for the new file system and install the OS fresh? or does it somehow do it another way?

what are the additions with HEVC? does iTunes now play it or something? i figured you could already play HEVC with VLC like on Windows

Meh seems like a pretty boring and miniscule upgrade for me. I'll pass for now.
The under the hood improvements are well worth it. And it's free. Just backup and upgrade. There's nothing to lose. Except for like a half hour of computer time that you can just spend watching TV or screwing around on your phone.

Running a backup here, then I'll be upgrading. I really like Photos so it's mainly for the improved editing features there.

It's arguably the biggest update in over a decade due to file system migration.
And graphics system rewrite to use Metal 2, instead of some ancient iteration of opengl. It is always amusing seeing how much faster OS rendering is under windows on the same mac laptop, compared to native MacOS. I really hope that changes now.

Will try later today to update it.

"Command + S" Save window takes more than 10 seconds for me to load since I'm on a HDD. Will APFS make it take less time?

I remote into a PC from mac and move stuff around for work.

Should I wait and see, or does this files system play nice with NTFS?

No, you can upgrade in place. And it will also convert your drive to APFS for you without touching a thing. (Obviously always have a backup anyway.)

If you have any music software, always remember to not upgrade on Mac until you know your plugins are fully supported.

It’s not going to wear out your battery if you are plugged in. I use Chrome 95% of the time unless i’m somewhere i know i can’t plug in all day. Honestly, Chrome has gotten much better about 8-10 months ago with some focused work on the Mac side... Safari is definitely a distant backup for me

Oh neat, if that's the case then Im definitely switching back.

My Macbook is almost a year old, but its slowly starting to get that problem where the underside gets heated up. Does Chrome make that issue worse? Ive heard all kinds of stuff about Chrome overworking Macbook and I dont like how hot my old Macbook got.

So, being plugged in doesnt affect any of this?

Very impressed by the UI rendering speed improvements on my 2017 MBP. The UI is now as smooth and responsive on iGPU as it previously was using dGPU. Was hoping for this, but really didn't expect it to become reality.
This is most visible when I open the applications folder grid from the dock. That always used to lag while it slides out and scrolls up/down, when on iGPU. Now it's smooth as butter.

This update should feel fantastic for people with iGPU-only laptops.
