LEGO |OT6| We Only Build in Black. And Sometimes Very Dark Grey.

I'm so glad I'm not into Batman. But I'm looking forward to pouring over pics and the instructions. Need to know how to build that piano. Love the brick built Joker logo too.

Sometimes I feel like we're being trolled in non-community Lego threads.

I think that's just the curse of being an outsider. For instance I struggle to understand why golf clubs are so expensive, why would you pay so much for them and then pay again to be part of a club; to a golfer though it's all worth it.

I'm fine with Lego going all out on sets like Joker Manor, but good Lord that thing is expensive consideirng the license. It's almost triple the current most expensive set in the line. And it's for a movie that came out this year, with no nostalgic value, for a part of the movie I honestly forgot happened already. It doesn't fit with any other themes and it doesn't work as a display piece.

When you look at UCS Star Wars sets going for $200-$300 you think of all the collectors who grew up with the movie franchise coming into their own as 30-40 somethings and having disposable income. The market is obvious. Same for the classic Bat Cave. The Creator Expert sets are nice display pieces. The Disney Castle and Ghostbusters HQ work as display pieces and have their own followings.

But you see something like Joker Manor and... I dunno, man. Who outside of this thread wants this set and has the money to throw down on it? What kids do you know that can spend this much on a toy? What collectors do you know who want something that looks like this sitting in their office or their den? Who has that emotional connection to the Lego Batman Movie?

I'm not a marketing expert obviously. But I just don't get it.

Looks cool, but the interior seem really small. You can see how The Joker is posed on what is basically a small ledge in one picture. It did not enter my wantlist in the way I thought Wayne Manor would though. I love the idea of having a manor in my city but the open nature of this seem like you would have to get a minimum of two to fully enclose it.

On the pricing issue, as someone who just came out of the dark ages I am okay with the fact that I will have to pick up some expensive sets along the way, but there seem to be a lot of them that have come out in recent history. I know not everyone buys everything but there has to be some kind of limit to what the avatars AFOL can afford.

I predict less than ten posts before complaints about price or “This is why LEGO profits are down.”

Honestly, I kind of feel that way about this one. This one feels a bit misguided to me, kinda like Echo Base UCS. This is how my reactions went:

1) I see the e-mail and click on it thinking how neat it looks

2) I see the price and my immediate thought is that build costs that much? I had serious sticker shock

3) Then I immediately go to look for the piece count

4) I find it and think, well I guess it's a high piece count so that explains the price

5) Then I think, who is this aimed for? I feel that line and that set is something I would think is aimed more at kids from the way it looks, but that sticker price certainly says otherwise.

So even though I'm well versed in LEGO pricing, that one gave me sticker shock when looking at the set first and the price second. Even after finding the piece count, and knowing what the price per piece costs, it still feels expensive given how it looks.

This looks like it could have been scaled down dramatically, sold at $100, and done quite well over the holidays.

As is... like I said, I dunno man...

A kids' play set at an adult builder price.

Seems like they could have reduced the detail a bit and got the price down to 100-150 if they intended it to be used mostly for play

I think that set is probably aimed at adults with nostalgia for older versions of Batman, just as the Wayne Manor was. I mean, I get this is from the new movie but a lot of the design in that (based on what I saw, didn't see movie) seem to be callbacks to the 60s Batman and other pre-Nolan designs.

Based on the pics and the 14+ I'm betting there's some good techniques in it. I'll be downloading the instructions.

I think that's just the curse of being an outsider. For instance I struggle to understand why golf clubs are so expensive, why would you pay so much for them and then pay again to be part of a club; to a golfer though it's all worth it.
Ya I don't get golf either. But you wouldn't go into a golf thread and be like, whoa a club for the 1%, you can only use it with one type of swing too.

That's a fair point. I suppose the difference comes from the perspective that Lego is first and foremost a children's toy. Perhaps we'll see a perception shift similar to how games are viewed today vs a decade ago,

It's the drive-by nature of posting on forums in 2017. People feel the need to share their uninformed $0.02 with no regard for whether it advances the discussion. We still have people over on the gaming side who think they're experts at game development because they've played games all their lives, when in reality their opinion is meaningless.

Love this

I feel that is the fig that sells this set.

I had to take some time to think about this set before properly commenting. I know I'm biased when it comes to the comic stuff, I even buy the not so popular sets like Joker Land and tv show Batcave. I was prepared and fully expecting a proper Wayne Manor so my initial feelings were a bit of disappointment.

Now taking some time, thinking about this and going over the pictures I've come around some with still a few complaints. My biggest thought on this set is that I think they felt had to this instead of proper Wayne Manor. Think about some of the most common complaints about GB HG? "It's a bit boring to look at" is a consistent one and they arent wrong. I mean it really is just a plain building. When we say Mocs of Wayne Manor or Xavier's Manor who can really tell the difference between the two (till you get in the basement). So you know what I get this, it keeps it from being boring like eventually everyone would say about it.

And that box, pure mad genius.

My one main complaint is a common one with these large sets. They seem unsure of their target audience of the set and play features that in the end are pointless. I'm going to retain the option to take this complaint though if I like the rollercoaster.

Also a request, let's stop making OT threads for every expensive set. They are depressing and seem counterproductive. :(

Amen to that. In fact, when you put it that way despite being a pseudo game developer myself, I still fear I am guilty of the same on occasion.

I have all the LEGO Batman sets so I know I'll get that one eventually, but I just dislike sets that are open backed. Was hoping for a modular-like Wayne Manor, not a Joker playset.

I think that Manor looks really cool. Should be very fun to build while TLBM plays in the background!

Can't wait for the designer video!

I fear for the footprint of the inevitable Creator rollercoaster. As if I already didn't have any room for the Carousel or the Ferris Wheel...

It would be really awesome if they took that in consideration with the other sets. Think outside box and have it spread out enough to actually weave in and out of the other sets.

Make a carnival theme and throw a few pieces of the coaster into each set, to complete the coaster, you'd need all the sets

;)

Yeah, I am a big LEGO promoter but this set is a giant pile of meh for me. Thank god at least it means one less expensive set to need to buy.

Do people buy and sell sets in this thread at all?

I have a 10236 - Ewok Village set that's partially built, partially in-bag/box that I'm thinking of disassembling and selling. I love the set but I just don't have a good place to display it so I never got around to finishing the build. It's much bigger than any of the other sets that I have displayed and I've been shopping around for a few other collectibles that I could use the money for.

If I do sell it, what's a reasonable price for a used, but complete set that's been retired? They seem to be going for $175-200 on Ebay with the sealed sets up in the $250-300 range for now.

Also, is it worth holding onto it for a few years and selling then? Not sure how rare this one's going to be since it was available for a few years.

In one hand it is way to spread the word about our hobby so general people can proper understand it (much like videogames went through this process). In other hand it is depressing, really.

Well even so we have to make choices since it would be a large display anyway. I am already doing a city, maybe do some Pirate stuff in the near future and still like medieval setups. I chose to pass the Ferris and the Carousel, a Roller Coster, not matter how awesome the idea is will probably be a pass too did to space constraints.

Haha that's just cruel, I hated that shit with the Marvel build a figures. I always had to get a couple figures I never wanted, FUCK GAMBIT!

Maybe do episodic content Lego releases.

They can’t even sell proper rail tracks separately 😕

It sucks that you can't just buy a pack of straight tracks or just curved tracks without the flex or switch ones, but you can at least still buy a ton of track on your own. The narrower train tracks can't be bought separately.

Just hoping that if they do do a large scale roller coaster set they allow tracks to be bought separately so people can make monstrous roller coasters on their own.

I guess maybe start doing more threads for $20 set reveals to shut up the "OMG Legos are so expensive only these $200 plus sets exist!"

I feel the no room to display pain. Everytime i have to tear down a set it kills me. Its either get a bigger house or start getting creative. Ships in the bathtub, carnival stuff spread out in the kitchen. Eventually start doing a Ryuuroden and build your giant tower outside.

Like this one?

https://www.jukinmedia.com/licensing/view/969775

He used train tracks.

But train tracks packs are a joke. The flex one is no good, slows down the trains and may flip them off track. And you have to buy them to get the straight ones. Plus curved tracks only comes with one radius, there is no x cross, etc.

And even road plates are a problem. I need more straight roads, but I have to buy them with intersections.

Saw the LEGO Ninjago movie last night and thought it was pretty good. Me and my 2 friends were the only 3 people in the theater when we saw it (at 8:30pm) which was pretty cool, haha.

I agree with some of the reviews I saw that this one isn't as good as the LEGO Movie or Batman, and it was more kid focused to me than the others, but it was still enjoyable. It looked absolutely gorgeous which isn't a big surprise. I feel like more than the first two LEGO movies they did a lot more close-up scenes which worked surprisingly well IMO.

I do wish they'd fleshed out some of the other characters a bit more, though. The only female Ninja was voiced by Abby from Broad City who I think is hilarious, so I especially wish she'd had more to work with in this movie.

A cool theme could warrant its own thread instead of just making them for enormous beastly sets.

A monster fighters successor would be worth at least 3 dedicated threads, for example.

Honestly, do we really need those specific threads? I don't understand what they'll do...

It's strange, they used to sell them separately in various packs...

Older tracks are basically the same as new ones, except that they have the electric part too, am I right?

Also, no more crossings? I'll probably wish I had more than one :/ (and on those, you cannot remove the electric part)
