Cuphead Review Thread

I am very glad that I ate crow on this one. Can't wait to play it later today or tomorrow!

I was worried it would get cancelled or turn out to be poor but reviews and impressions are making me happy it got that extra time.

Also negatives of it being too hard? Hahahaha, Man do people not remember the horror of the 8 and 16 bit gen?

Godamn, this looks good. Not something I was very excited for, per se, but seeing how it all came together is really pleasing. Seems amazing.

Don't have any interest in really playing this game myself but those animations are really something else. Amazing job on the visual front.

Also based off Karak's review it appears the storyline is literally the same exact thing as
Witcher III's Hearts of Stone
.... lol

I mean, it's a classic fable trope but it's just funny to see how the two games are such different takes on it.

why some people are complaining about the scores ?? there is only like 10 scores so far

84 is a really good score for a boss rush game, i was hoping it will score 85+, but that is still good

don't expect the game to be like Ori or Salt and sanctuary level of amazing, it's just a boss rush game with a unique art style, and don't forget that there is a HUGE flaw, no online

i'm still thinking about buying it, even if i don't like it, i just want to play something on my Dust box one

Uh, last I checked with someone on GAF this isn't a boss rush game.

Please tell me this isn't actually a boss rush game.

Can't wait to play it today. I'm contemplating downloading it on my work computer and bring my xbox one controller to work. LOL! Something to play for lunchtime. Happy this is Play Anywhere. I got it loaded on the XO now...just busy morning.

I'm baffled as to how somebody can hear a game is a boss rush and take that as a negative. A boss rush is a great game with the fat chopped off! At least Cuphead kept it mostly lean. I can't wait to start playing after work.

Boss rush games aren't for everybody, so I can understand somebody being disappointed.

Thankfully, I love them. Furi was one of my favourite games of last year and I expect to like this even more.

Uh, actual levels to go through to get to a boss is not "fat."

there are some platforming sections, but they are 25% of the game, from what i have seen, the platforming looks lame and was made just to shut up those who demand it

the main focus of the game are the bosses, the game is basically a boss rush mode with a few platforming sections

Based off of the reviews, not having to trudge through a level to get to the bosses might be a positive. It looks like pattern recognition is key for defeating bosses, and I think it could be frustrating to have to redo platforming sections over and over.

I'm glad it delivered because we actually bought a second controller just for this game lol.

Quite literally it is much lower than 100 and 90.

Amazing scores but not quite "sweet Jesus" levels. That's all. Relax a little :)
Are you gonna do this annoying shit at anyone showing excitement at these reviews or are you done already?

Im so tired of this shit. How the hell is an 84 bad?

it's not bad, but when someone gets too excited for a certain game, they expect too much

imagine if RDR 2 scored 89 ?? that would be a disaster to some fans, an 89 score is obviously a very good score, but not to a game like RDR 2

overhype = disappointment

no one is immune to overhype, each person expects too much from a certain game, personally i'm expecting a lot from Cyberpunk 2077 and Death Stranding, i may get disappointed, i may not, will see in 2020

They're not lame and they're not really platforming. They're run and gun, like Contra and Gunstar Heroes.

Great reviews. Now I'm wondering why did they go with post release day review embargo?

I'm not the one being needlessly over sensitive. Looking for arguments and a desire for conflict is usually a sign of some deeper concerns.

Talk about the lack of self awareness lol.

Fuck 'em for releasing this at 9:00 on a fuckin' Friday morning!
But them reviews though.

I was expecting a mid 90s game but it looks like is going to end in the high 70s... a little disappointed... But i am going to buy the game anyways. I love the artstyle.

It's at 87 right now... No idea why you would think it looks like it's going to end up in the high 70s. Also an 87 puts it in the top 3% of all reviewed games. Mid 90s!? There's literally been entire years without a game reaching the mid 90s in the past. Only 3 this year. Peoples expectations are crazy sometimes.

You know, I think one of the developers joked about offering the physical cels as some form of reward in another thread. It was a cruel joke but I would love that. I'm very excited about this.

And Cuphead is a pretty hardcore throwback to run & gun games, hardly the stuff that appeals to the masses. Thinking it would outscore prettty much the enitrety of this gen is nuts. Scores are excellent as they are.

Some translated quotes:

"Cuphead is as difficult as fun, as beautiful as it is addictive, a game with which it is impossible to get angry even though we will fail over and over and over again. Deal with the devil."

"Cuphead is the wonder you've been looking for. The wait has been worth it."

"Every level feels fresh even after dozens of tries."

Pattern recognition is part of platformers.

Just say you are a fanboy.
"Sweet jesus" because a game has a 80/100 and not a 90/100. My god.

This is why I've never cared for a point based scoring system. Too many people focus exclusively on the score and not the content of the reviews. Those types of scoring systems are sometimes also used as a measuring tool for publishers to decide whether or not developers receive a bonus, which is bullshit IMO.

I understand being disappointed and you have every right to be. I just hope you keep in mind the game was massively delayed because every piece of art was created by hand. So I can't imagine how long it would have taken to complete if they created levels for every boss in the game. IIRC the developers quit their jobs and put mortgages on their homes just to focus on this game. Like any good studio, I'm sure they wanted to do more, but they probably didn't have a choice. Hopefully if this is successful enough, we see a sequel that has a larger amount of platforming levels.

They didn't. The game isn't out yet.

Oops, I'll change to it to "release date embargo", because most games (especially the great ones) have their review embargo lifted at least a day before release.

What the hell? These are really high and possibly unrealistic expectations (assuming you're not trolling), and high 70s? Dude, your math is so bad.
