GAF plays...31 Nights of Horror...5

Sorta like that aside from the staples (RE and Silent Hill). Those have interesting stories and soundtracks, so you focus even deeper on stuff you missed the first time.

Yeah, I think anything with a deep lore I could play again to see if I missed secrets. Or to see if there was foreshadowing I had missed that I could pick up on now I had finished the game. Also RE has the ranking system to unlock new costumes/weapons, etc.

But it wouldn't be the same tense experience I had on the first playthrough, more of a relaxed adventure to explore the world (rather than to simply survive in it).

Thanks to those who offered up some recommendations!

Still slowly working my way through The Evil Within. Currently on Chapter 10 and just got past the section
where you encounter those two giant hook wielding assholes.

The game really does have some very thrilling encounters. That section and the one preceding it had my heart pounding.

I know the game had mixed reviews and I can sort of see some minor annoyances with it, so far it's just been an incredibly fun game to play through. Yes there's some bullshit I don't like and hope doesn't return in TEW2, but all in all, fucking great game.

One thing that stood out to me is it seems to be incredibly balanced with the difficulty. I don't know if there's some behind the scenes AI going on with the RNG or some shit but I swear I always have just barely enough ammo or health. While I'm occasionally completely out of ammo for a certain weapon or two (just due to being generally terrible at aiming and letting the panic take control) I'm never completely out for all weapons. There's always juuuuust enough ammo to be found or a health pack to be discovered. I think that's part of what makes some of battles so thrilling.

Decided to post some initial thoughts after playing about 2 hrs of RastaGundam's game Narcosis. I went in to the game not knowing anything about the game at all other than it was in first person and that it was on PC & Xbox One. I gotta say so far I'm pretty damn impressed as I found the game to be very claustrophobic not to mention very tense & atmospheric...

Hey that's awesome, thanks for playing! Keen to hear your thoughts, after you reach the end...

(by the way, if anyone's interested in getting their feet wet, the game's half-off for the next week on Steam, too)

Hey so I'm a big wimp when it comes to horror games. I can watch horror movies all day, but cannot for the life of me get through any horror game. Any advice as to how to get over this?
Luigi's Mansion is my answer. It's not a horror game but I argue it fits the thread's premise.

I'm playing through Silent Hill 3 for the first time. I think I'm over halfway through the game and loving every minute of it.

The Evil Within Chapter 10

Man, that
Laura fight
was kind of bullshit. So far that's been the most annoying fight for me. Didn't take me too many times to finally beat it and I did with only a sliver of health left.

Which then led me to some more bullshit with that
garage battle
. I went in with a tiny bit of health so basically if I got hit once, that was it. Took me a few tries before fully exploring the area and finding a couple health packs.

Fucking intense fight that's for sure.

I....think I need to restart Fatal Frame. On Night 3 with one Sacred Water (max health) and one Stone Mirror (revive). Burned all my Type-37 film (2nd strongest) on accident. Hm...

I have the Silent Hill HD collection and I'd like to play through SH2 for the first time. I've heard it's a horrific (har) version of the game though. But it's really the only way I'll be able to play through it.

Also bought Amnesia a few weeks ago in anticipation of some Halloween gaming. Figures it'd be available through PS+. Oh well, still excited to play it.

Playing through Super Castlevania IV on the SNES classic and it's a delight. I loved this game when I was a kid and i still love it now.

Looking forward to Evil Within 2 next week. Debating playing through the first again as I got about half way maybe?

I heard it's...better if you patch it (on PS3), but not the best way to play the game. If you can look past the horrible port and fog and textures and stuff, I think it might be ok to get the gist of the game. I don't recall if SH3 got butchered as badly. Have you considered emulation? I too own the HD collection (gift) but I'll likely grab the PS2 games at some point.

I wanted to try some PSVR stuff, but so far seems like nothing comes remotely close to RE7. Not even middle of the range stuff (Arizona Sunshine I already have, and while cool, isnt exactly scare inducing).

I don't think the SH3 port is as bad, but it doesn't have the option to use the original voice actors. Which would be a complete deal breaker for me.

Annnnd Fatal Frame down.

RANK D.

I really liked it! I kinda lost the 'being scared' part on maybe the 2nd night. Maybe it's because I felt comfortable and confident with the controls.

Onto my next game...I have the other two Fatal Frames but I wanna space them out to avoid fatigue. Maybe alternate. So I suppose next I have the choice between...

  • Clock Tower 3 (Never played more than an hour, lost my save twice due to memory card shenanigans.)
  • Haunting Ground (played and beat a long time ago, super good tho, worth a replay.)
  • Kuon (About an hour in, though I'd wanna restart since I was just messing around with capture.)
Siren and the Silent Hill games are options but I don't own them (outside of the SH HD collection), so I'd need to buy them.

I also have PC, PS3, and PS4 horror games but I think I might wanna make this month about PS2 horror games, sans Evil Within 2 next week.

Nice, Fatal Frame is a pretty awesome game. I've also only played the first one, really gotta get around to hitting up those sequels.

I'd vote Haunting Ground out of those 3, but I mean, you've already played it.

I am completely stuck in Sweet Home. I puttered about for an hour this evening, drinking beer and trying every combination of items I could, but I cannot progress any further now that I've reached the lake. In all that time, I saw one new monster, and solved a puzzle only to be stuck RIGHT afterwards.

That new monster was pretty sweet though...

I played a few more hours of Observer the other night, and my opinion has definitely changed for the better now that I've gotten into the meat of the game. The "observing" sequences are very intense, and have me on edge for much of the time because of how unpredictable it is; you never quite know what's going to happen and when. Other games have done these sort of playable dream/nightmare scenarios, but I'm not sure I've seen it done quite this well.

There's definitely more to the game than the first hour or two would indicate. It's reminding me a lot more of SOMA at the moment, than what was initially feeling like a walking simulator. Just got to the basement area.

Still playing Resident Evil, and still enjoying it. I've just overcome the most tension filled part of the game - being near the end, but I had used all my ink ribbons. 30 minutes had passed without being able to save. The sheer joy when I saw that ink ribbon sat next to the nearly found typewriter... the joy.

What version are you playing? I ask because every RE game I always seem to have an overabundance of Ink Ribbons by the end, with the exception of the very original release of RE which I believe only has 10 in the entire game.

I'm playing the REmake on PS4, but I've been really liberal with my saves (25 or so up to this point), mainly due to having a kid and not knowing when I'll have to suddenly stop playing. I try to get a bit of gaming in when he's being looked after by his Grandparents or what not. I should probably just wait until the night descends and I can have a solid hour or two.

Oh, I feel ya. I replayed through the whole RE series last year, and REmake and RE0 on the PS4 were my favourite because I put them in sleep mode if my then-newborn woke up.

Halloween - and Autumn as a whole - has become my favorite time of year during the past 5 years or so and I'm happy to be part of Gaf's celebration of it.

Little bit of a side topic that might be relevant for others here, but speaking of the Super Best Friends' excellent Shitstorm of Scariness and how it for me has come to partly define my Halloween experience as a non-American who mostly celebrates by passively partaking in the festivities through others, I was wondering if people here could help me list some good additions to it, be it for games or other media.

So far I also have Cinemassacre's Monster Madness in my rotation (which unfortunately, but understandably, has been reduced from daily to weekly horror movie reviews), as well as Linkara's comic covering Longbox of the Damned. The rest I fill up with videos by Scary Game Squad (Jesse Cox, The Completionist and friends), AestheticGamer (aka Gaf's own horror game expert Dusk Golem), Helloween4545, Stop Skeletons From Fighting, RedLetterMedia, Nostalgiaween by the Nostalgia Critic, TheBitBlock (now rebranded as Nintendo Beyond; and yes, Josh's views and personality are not everyone's cup of tea but his spare-no-expense style celebration of Halloween is somewhat of a redeeming quality at least) and others depending on my interests and their more fluctuating Halloween themed output.

So my question then, summed up again: Are there youtube channels that really delve into Halloween by covering horror games, movies, comics, books, or all of the above, that I should add to my rotation, specifically channels like SBF, Cinemassacre or Linkara that take the effort to set the mood by doing special intro's or Halloween themed sets etc.? Thanks in advance!

Is that like a high tech lab of sorts?

Also is it best to just move your entire party together in Sweet Home? Seems that way.

That’s what I’ve been doing: 1 party of 3 members, 1 part of 2 members, and they’re never more than one room away from each other.

Pro-tip: keep Taro and Asuka in the same party, as sometimes you need both the Vacuum and Camera to read the hidden messages on the various frescos.

Got it!

Also was streaming Silent Hill 2 when dog accidentally dashes across cable and it unplugs >_<

I finally started The Evil Within again tonight, have The Coma: Recut and Chaos;Child to look forward to afterwards.

I wish Galerians was added to the PS3/Vita classics. Been wanting to get back into that again ever since I got stuck at a boss fight without the right type of psycho drugs to beat it.

Since my wife and I started our own family, we've adopted this holiday into our household. We reside in a country where Halloween isn't a widely practiced mind you.
Nevertheless, we decided that we wanted to decorate our house each year, treat our kid and binge on our favourite movie genre, namely horror.

This also meant something with regards to playing videogames, me being a gamer and all that :)

I made a list of games I really want to finish before October ends, And if I don't? It really doesn't matter, since I love the experience of sitting in a decorated home with some moody lights on playing scary games. That's what it's about really.

The games I put on my list are:
RE: Revelations (almost finished)
RE: Revelations 2
Little Nightmares
Alien Isolation
Narcosis
Amnesia Collection (thx psplus)
Super Castlevania
Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare

Get your fright on horrorGAF!

I probably only have time for one of these, GAF help me choose:

Alan Wake (PC)
Dead Rising (PS4)
Shadows of the Damned (PS3)

Alan Wake (PC)
Dead Rising (PS4)
Shadows of the Damned (PS3)

If you've never played any of them

Dead Rising > Alan Wake > Shadows of the Damned

Shadows of the Damned is still a pretty great game. Also Dead Rising is far far longer if you aim to get the proper ending and complete most content.

During the last few days...

Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles

Vor langer Zeit lebten die Menschen glücklich und zufrieden.™

I usually wasn't the biggest fan of classic slow Castlevania compared to what came later, so I originally bought this for cheap to have a physical version of Symphony of the Night. Turns out though, this actually quite grabbed me. This game introduced so many QOL improvements, so that I could enjoy it for what it is. Apart from small changes like secondary weapon changing or more flexible stair controls, the most important aspect was the drastic reduction of bullshit punishments. There's no more artificial death pits in vertical levels when the camera moves up, dramatically less annoying enemy placements, and so forth. There's an actual payoff for methodical gameplay and significantly less arbitrary reasons for one's death. On top of that, the soundtrack might be even better than your usual Castlevania affair. I also liked that there's the option for an easy mode, available through an unlockable secondary character. Speaking of which, this game has a nice amount of unlockables and secrets, despite its linear nature. However, I'm not too fond of the IGA-esque "real ending", which is too cryptic to get and forces repetition upon you.

Castlevania: Rondo of Blood

The original game is slightly harder in places, but less of a hassle to get to the real ending. The soundtrack and spritework hold up well enough, but the remake has the advantage of looking closer to Symphony of the Night stylistically. But in this game it's easier to spot secrets, because the graphics are clearer. I'm not sure which version I prefer.

Super Castlevania IV

I haven't played this game in quite a while, but I remember not being that blown away by it back in the day. I think Rondo of Blood is better, but this title actually grew on me too. There's some cheap bullshit especially by the end, but I appreciated the slow gameplay more than in the past. Unlike later entries, this game also still has more of a lowkey gothic atmosphere, which is arguably absent from most of the later Castlevania games.

I just started SOMA the other day. My second time through it, but first time on PC. I love this game, and I think I might finally try Outlast II as well this month. How did Outlast II pan out, anyway? Seems to have fallen off faster than the first one did.

I don't know if they quite fit what you're looking for, but Jessie Cox has a series similar to the Zaibatsu's Shitstorm on his channel. It's called the Scary Game Squad. It isn't an annual October thing, but it is similar in that Jessie gets a group of his friends and they let's play horror games.

For me it's basically The Evil Within 2 at the end of the month and the following:

Resident Evil 3 replay since it's been ages and the other RE games I've played more recently. Nice and short and one of my favourite RE games.
Observer (kinda not horror I guess but still)
Silent Hill 4 replay since it's been over a decade since I last played it and am in the mood
Spirit Camera - never finished it and I've been in the mood for a J-horror esque game lately.

Ok so Galerians: I kinda understand the need for tension / AP psychic power meter constantly rising...but it seems like it takes a bit of the pk fun out of the game. Also I'm kinda surprised it's map has no player cursor.

The story is really interesting so far, but I've still got a way to go. Haven't made it past the first facility.

Galerians is so underrated. Fans of PSX era RE games should definitely give it a go since it takes it in other directions that other "RE Clones" never go. A really desolate Cyberpunk atmosphere, cool horror imagery, batshit crazy plot and characters, nice soundtrack and that classic survival horror feel (with tank controls). Final boss is really something else as well. I'll always advocate for that game in these kind of topics.

Yes, please do if you feel that it might help others discover said content. Oh, and don't forget your own horror gaming streams, like I accidentally did ;-)

Scary Game Squad fits pefectly in fact (even if they do this content throughout the year and one has to backlog it himself for Halloween time)...but unfortunately I already mentioned it. No worries though, I write far too elaborate posts. Feel free to mention any other channels!

Alone in the dark (1992)

latest

I was going to play this, but I ended up watching a playthrough instead. I don't think I would have enjoyed the game.

Anyway, I've been playing a horror game (kinda) for PSX called Koudelka. Only one and a half hour in, but it's pretty decent. Voice acting is good, the atmosphere is sufficiently creepy, and the monster designs are great so far. There is not much more to say at this point unfortunately.

Speaking of PSX; Any horror gems from the PSX-era besides the Resident Evils and Silent Hills I should be aware of?

Parasite Eve, or so I'm told.

Alone in the Dark is another game in the Resident Evil/Silent Hill horror genre of fixed camera angles and creepy goings on.
Discworld where you play as death (but that's not a horror game at all, just a point and click adventure with wonderful humour).
X-Files another PnC Adventure, but in the X-Files setting. It was set between Season 4 and the Movie or somewhere around there, my memory is a bit fuzzy. You play an FBI Agent who is investigating a case and somehow get pulled into the Mulder and Scully conspiracy. It's FMV.

I keep hearing about Koudelka, but used prices are a little bit too high for me, considering its poor critical reception.
Dino Crisis and Parasite Eve 1 & 2 are great though, plus I guess Legacy of Kain is at the very least horror themed.

I tried getting into Parasite Eve, but the combat is so damn slow. Alone in the Dark (New Nightmare) is a game I've never actually played, but I've always been interested in. The graphics were quite good (at least on Dreamcast). I have never played the Dino Crisis games, but I guess I should.

Thanks for the recommendations.

The Evil Within Chapters 11 & 12

I can definitely say those were my least favorite chapters in the game so far. There were a couple short sections within those chapters that were cool but overall, yikes

Hoping to start Chapter 13 tonight

I think I gave up on The Evil Within around chapter 10/11/12 or so. Maybe. I can't remember. I really didn't like the game, and I wish I hadn't tried to power through it as it took away my will to play games for nearly a year. I can't explain it.

I keep forgetting about Dino Crisis, and I even have the first one sitting there on the shelf. Hmm. Never played.

I played it for the first time in preparation for The Evil Within and DC was a far more tense game (even though the Jurassic Park backdrop isn't scary). Just quickly understand that your pistol is useless.
