SNES Mini Classic Hacking | More games, more borders, more gooder.

I haven't modded mine yet and probably won't get the chance to for a while but when I do I may have a go at messing around with some of the arcade style overlays that are already available for other formats.

We definitely need a better TV border than than the branded Nintendo version.

Not sure if this was already asked/answered but can we set a different border for each game?

Trying to figure that out. It should be a case of
Code:
--use-decorative-frame /var/lib/hakchi/rootfs/usr/share/backgrounds/[border]/
in the arguments, but it doesn't seem to trigger.

UN Squadron after all these years is still magic.

Is there a way to have all the games on one level of folder or is the additional folder structure required?

Not sure if this has been asked before, added the retroach and the snes9x2010 modules so i can play unsupported games that don't work with the stock emulator.

Is there a way to add scanlines in retroarch, can't see anything in the menu when i press start & select to get it up. Managed to turn of the blur filter but still no scanlines.

What option do I use if I want 2 columns of games down on the screen? I dont want to use folders.

And again for the new page, requesting a custom border for Chrono Trigger if anyone has the time.

Can anyone make this border for Chrono Trigger?

Maybe in black/white and a little blurred as the Giantbomb guys had for their endurance run? See here:

Somethings up, this thing is telling me Final Fantasy 3 is 2P and Killer Instinct is 1-player.

Guess I need to fix this all manually.

On top of that the Select + Down isn’t working. Is this something I need to set?

But Final Fantasy IV, V, VI (and IX) are two-player.

For the Great Circus Mystery, it says "set 0x180011 to 0x15" to get it working. Anyone know what the hell that means and how to do it? I've been trying to find a guide and hex edit it but i have no idea what to do.

Someone tempered with the music yet? There is this tutorial on reddit. Similiar to the border/background/frame modifying.
I kinda wanna do it, but the snes mini background music is already perfect. Wii Shop Channel I guess?

gnadenlos said:
Create a file "p8173_ownmusic" with

overmount /usr/share/ui/snes-usa/resources/sounds/hvc/bgm_home.wav
overmount /usr/share/ui/snes-usa/resources/sounds/hvc/bgm_boot.wav

Copy that file to /var/lib/hakchi/rootfs/etc/preinit.d

Copy your new background music or silent file as "bgm_home.wav" to /var/lib/hakchi/rootfs/usr/share/ui/snes-usa/resources/sounds/hvc

Copy your new boot/reset music or silent file as "bgm_boot.wav" to /var/lib/hakchi/rootfs/usr/share/ui/snes-usa/resources/sounds/hvc
(you have to create part of the second path)

For European devices change snes-usa to snes-eur.

Just restored everything on mine for now. Too tempting to waste a ton of time configuring, tweaking, etc when I really want to play the system for what it is. I'll revisit this when I've beaten at least 50% of the games on there first.

Trust me to get stuck at the first hurdle lol

Trying to install hakchi, my laptop is having none of it. Windows 10 asked me to download NET Framework 3.5 SP1 to install hakchi but after accepting I got the following message

"Component .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 has failed to install with the following error message:
"A failure occurred attempting to install .NET Framework 3.5 SP1."

The following components failed to install:
- .NET Framework 3.5 SP1"

Any Windows 10 connoisseurs?

I'm having a little problem, and apologies if someone had asked this before. This thread moves fast.

I'm on a mac running OSX El Capitan using VirtualBox with Windows 10. I have my Super Famicon Mini connected through USB, and Windows is able to detect it. I ran Hakchi. It was able to dump the original kernel, and started doing the flash custom kernal task.

Towards the end of the flashing, the Mini resets, and boots up as normal. It starts playing on the TV, and the flashing comes back as "successfully" complete.

I added a game on hakchi and clicked "synchronize" on the bottom, but it's unable to connect to the Mini. Also, using FTP comes back with a 500 Mini offine, error.

Could you give me some direction on what I should do?

Edit:
I tried turning it off and back on a few times, but I'm still unable to synch. I did flash the custom kernel a second time to try and catch something at the end of the process. Though, during the process it complained about a checksum not matching.

I had issues very similar to dyreschlock; I got the Framework installed on Windows 10, but I did have a couple tense moments with the USB driver/connection... basically, I got everything installed, but my SNES mini loses its connection via USB so hakchi doesn't see it... I got my kernel dumped and flashed the custom, then selected a bunch of games and when I went to sync I just kept getting a dialog saying I had to attach my SNES mini and install the driver... I'd cycle the power on the SNES mini and reinstall the driver over and over again but hakchi still wouldn't recognize that the SNES mini was hooked up, even though I could see the SNES mini icon in the USB connections on the task bar... I couldn't get it to recognize and so I restored to the original kernel and that worked fine... I tested the system and it was good to go as I bought it, but then I tried again, reflashing the custom kernel and syncing the games... during the sync, the system seemed to lose contact with the PC a couple times (the dot in the bottom left of hakchi would turn from green to red) for 10 or fifteen seconds at a time, but then it would come back... the games loaded and when I tested everything was great BUT I'd added another copy of the Secret of Mana so I had two copies on the system... this prompted me to hook up to the PC again to re-sync the games and I was again caught in a loop where hakchi wouldn't recognize that my SNES mini was attached to the PC, despite the fact that the driver seemed active and the PC had the SNES mini icon in the task bar USB connections... I eventually got hakchi to recognize that the SNES mini was attached by unplugging the USB connection from the back of the SNES mini and plugging it back in, with the SNES mini power switch still turned on! So, I got my games and covers loaded in the end, but it was a bit hairy...

But, I do have 46 awesome games on my SNES mini now, and I wouldn't hesitate to do it again to another system; despite the "issues", the return to the original kernel worked flawlessly, so I feel confident that I can always just return to the baseline and start again...

UPDATE: Switching from a USB3 (blue) port to a USB2 port (black/grey) solved the issue... process much smoother now...

That Trinitron border is epic. I need that for mine for sure.

Do NES games work well with this hack on SNES mini? I don't have the NES mini and there are a bunch of games i'd like to play.

Sigh. Stupid thread is gonna make me do this!

Oh well, there's only a dozen or so games I'd like to add anyway so it shouldn't be nuts.

Is there a guide on how to install retroarch on the snes classic to get non working roms running?

Should just be:

Make sure that you are using hakchi2 version 2.20 or newer.
Download the retroarch_with_cores.zip.
Drag-and-drop it on hakchi2 window.
Press "OK" button and follow instructions.

That's awesome. Can Retroarch on the SNES run genesis and nes as well?

Do you know if there is a scanlines option when using the retroarch/snes9x2010 core as i cant find any info on activating them via hackchi, got the menu up where you can turn the bilinear filter off but when i select the filters option it takes me to a directory structure which i have no idea where the filters are if any are in there.

If you haven't done much of this yet, read the OP first so you have an idea of how everything works. You need to overmount the file /usr/bin/clover-canoe-shvc. Make a copy of it onto your computer, then make a text file named something like p0202_filter with two lines--
Code:
overmount /usr/bin/clover-canoe-shvc
and a blank line underneath. Put the file you created in /var/lib/hakchi/rootfs/etc/preinit.d/

Now, edit your copy of clover-canoe-shvc based on how you want your filters to behave. There are three relevant lines here.
Code:
keep-aspect-ratio) options="$options -filter 1 -magfilter X" ;; //4:3 mode
pixel-perfect) options="$options -filter 1 --pixel-perfect" ;;
crt-filter) options="$options -filter 2 -magfilter X" ;;

-magfilter is what controls the display filter. Set it to 3 to disable the bilinear filter, or set it to 2 to enable the horizontal-only linear filter.

-filter controls the scanline filter. You can turn it on by setting it to 2, for example if you want to use scanlines in pixel perfect mode as well.

After you set it up how you like, copy that file to /var/lib/hakchi/rootfs/usr/bin/.

I cannot for the life of me get this to work. Here are my folders and files in them:

So, I have attempted to edit it to try and turn off the filter in CRT mode, and turn on scanlines in pixel perfect mode. When I try to load a game, I get a few seconds of darkness, then back to the main menu.

I am new to this, so I figure I am just making a newb mistake. Figure it might be important to note that this:

After you set it up how you like, copy that file to /var/lib/hakchi/rootfs/usr/bin/.

folder did not exist. I created the bin folder in the usr folder, as it wasn't there to begin with. Maybe that is a clue to what I'm doing wrong?

So I know the rules around SNES ROM numbers and save sates, but what sort of space should I be looking at if I'm adding arcade ROMs and the like?

I'm basically uploading the SNES box art of arcade ports like Sunset Riders and booting the MAME version instead.

Tried this out a few minutes ago and it's super easy! Follow the instructions and you're all set.

Quick question and not sure if it's been answered: Is anyone else having weird sound issues with Earthworm Jim 2? Ran through all the games I added and that seems to be the only one with some sort of issue.

So I'm using all SFC boxart, because it is the greatest boxart in the history of the industry, and the US/PAL stuff is generally lame and the actual art is only part of the box.

Only issue is the handful of great SNES games that never had a SFC release. Managed to find a good fan made one for Zombies Ate My Neigbours(one of the best games of the gen). Unfortunately that angle seems to be the only one the person posted, so I had to mess around editing the perspective to get something usable. Not perfect, but nothing that'll show up when it's resized to a thumbnail. Here it is if anyone else is doing SFC-only art and needs one for this:

Next is to find something for MMPR:The Fighting Game. :/

How do I check if my dump file was transferred ok? Prior to clicking "installing driver" on that warning box, my SNES mini had the light off. However, after clicking it a few secs later it went back on when installing and I freaked out, turned the button off but the light stayed on. Then a few secs later the program said my file was ready and never to lose it. Am I already dead?

That is freakin' amazing and it's October so I want to play some Zombies. Great game. I now want to utilize SFC art. I will probably get around to it eventually.

So, if I manage to go deeper into this and do the icon shrinkage stuff, would that:

A.) Get rid of the folders?
B.) Put my games in proper order again?

As it stands now Final Fantasy II & III are in separate folders, so they are not ordered alphabetically.

Is there any way to get a PS4 arcade stick working with this thing? I really wanna try it for some fighters.

Btw Robin64, you might want to put a mini faq in the OP for some of these questions. I'm sure you're going to be asked them a lot. :)

anyone else gets a ''USB device not recognized'' when they plug the snes usb to their comp?

When i press the ''install driver'' button on hackchi it says ''nes mini not found''

I think I'm finally happy with it. 60 games, all of them work, matching box art, even for the Japan only games. I wish I had time to play it now but I neglected class work all weekend to mod the dang thing the way I wanted it.

Looking through the games i've added it just hit me that Konami was seriously on fire during that gen, so many great games. How the mighty have fallen :(

I’m pretty sure you’re supposed to be prompted beforehand which system you are working with.

Did you choose SNES mini?
