I'm still waiting for someone to give impressions of a Nintendo SNES Classic controller connected to a Wiimote and then wirelessly paired with an 8bitdo receiver.

I am using the Bluetooth version with the receiver right now. I also opened up the box and put the receiver inside so there is no dongle in the front. It is not done yet, but it works great so far.

Are you using an SF/SN30 or a Wiimote? The Wiimote is what I'm currently asking about.

Sorry, I am using the SNES30 (Bluetooth) 8BITDO Gamepad and the wireless receiver.

Edit: I actually took the receiver and put it on top of the metal plate because that was the only way I could fit it in (which the case on the receiver). My only concern is heat from it. But then, I doubt it it is much at all.

Where did others put it within the frame of the SNES?

Oh man Super Castlevania IV is such a perfect demonstration of my memory vs. reality. In my memory this was one of my favorite SNES games with great music, but in reality it's just an unfair mess of poor game design.

It's funny how it has really bad platforming mechanics and then, instead of improving those mechanics, they just design levels to be tough *because* of those bad mechanics intentionally!

Like the way it's unreasonably difficult to simply walk up and down stairs. Or how you can die instantly by brushing up against the side of spikes. Or how the instant the ground scrolls off the bottom of the screen you can die by falling below that screen. Or the huge amount of slowdown and unresonsive controls at the worst possible times.

Even the music doesn't live up to my memory! Some of the tracks like in the clock tower are so weirdly short, like they just end and repeat over and over again within the same level that only takes a few minutes to complete. So weird!

Thank goodness for the SNES Classic's Rewind function. And my 8bitdo NES30 Pro has an integrated power button so I can get to that Rewind function fast without hitting the reset button on the console :-D

I could have sworn I'd played this Final Fantasy before, but now that I'm 4 hours in only the first five minutes have been familiar.

When you were growing up, was it Berenstain Bears or Berenstein Bears?

What display options are you guys playing on? Pixel perfect, 4:3 or CRT?

I had always been a pixel perfect kind of guy, but the 4:3 on the SNES Mini is really good. Usually you get pixel shimmer, but they've managed to avoid that this time and instead everything looks lovely.

All of them. Final Fantasy VI, but especially Earthbound, but especially Secret of Mana.

Dammit. Ahahaha

I decided to start Mario RPG first due to loving Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi games. Probably picking Earthbound or FF6 after that and leaving Secret of Mana for last.

I feel like this a bit about Castlevania 1 on the NES. And in general i just think that II is a bad game. But I think Super Castlevania 4 is still a great game. I just beat it last weekend with only minor difficulty towards the very end, and I’m hardly a superstar anymore with old, difficult games.

I apologize if this question has been asked many many times before, but here goes:

Can you daisy chain controller extensions? I just bought one set on Amazon, and if there's 6 feet per cable, could I get 17ft (~5.2m) worth of cable length if I daisy chain the pair for one slot?

Playing Super Metroid all Sunday like it’s 1994

This console is amazing. The Super NES games have aged incredibly well, they are so fun to play I haven’t played current gen since the Super NES Mini dropped.

Might skip all this Autumn new games and focus on this.

Thanks for the help! I can't seem to get it to work though. (Apologies for the largish pics)

I took my save frontmission.srm, renamed it to cartridge.sram and pulled it into a hex editor:

Went to Analysis, Checksums and selected SHA-1:

Copied that and put it at the bottom and saved:

Then I made a new file, copied that in there, and saved it as cartridge.sram.hash:

Then I uploaded it to the game folder and it still deleted them and created a new save. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

I was in the same situation and spent half the day trying to figure out how to get this to work. In my case I wanted to use the SRAM file from a patched copy of FF6 that I used with Retroarch on my PC. I was getting the same results with the SNES classic deleting the save. After a ton of tinkering I found the answer:

1) Load your SRAM file up with an emulator (I used Higan) using an unpatched version of the rom
2) Load up your save and then save the game
3) With the newly updated SRAM file follow the same steps as before with the SHA-1 checksum and whatnot and copy it over to the mini

After doing these steps the save loaded fine, hopefully this works for you as well.

Man, I love Mega Man X and its learning curve. A week ago I entered this thread claiming that I had trouble finishing single stages and now a week later I can play through the entire game with 100% without a game over in under 1 1/2 hours. Love it and it will be probably one of those games that I will replay on a regular basis from now on.

Played mine last night for the first time.

Some thoughts:

Did Super Mario World have slowdown in the 1-3 on the SNES? It does here.

Because of display lag/input lag related to modern sets, Kirby Superstar's Samurai minigame is now impossible to win, possibly even on beginner difficulty.

F-Zero doesn't have "rubberband AI."

What happens is, any car you pass - including dummy cars - automatically become one of your rival cars.
Considering it's a known factor and predictable, you can build strategy around it.
wow, that's interesting Does F-Zero Maximum Velocity do this as well?

Just finished Zelda LttP, for the first time ever in three sittings. I got far in it back then but never finished it.

I can die as a more complete man now.
Well done. Incredible ending too, that game was the most epic thing ever back then.

Agreed.

It was long overdue as I consider myself a Zelda fan. I did all the games entirely except LttP and Majora, which is next on my list.

I'm in the same boat as Seik where I love the Zelda series but have never finished ALTTP. I dabbled with it in the GBA release but never did more than a few dungeons, so finishing this game was one of my biggest purchase incentives for a SNES Classic. (Right now I only have 3 dungeons left in the Dark World.)

For my own background on the series, I have finished pretty much every mainline entry except for it and Zelda 1 + 2, and I don't really care to complete those NES games. My biggest reaction with the game so far is that I really wished I had finished it before doing ALBW since a lot of surprise is gone with me looking at it backwards in a way.

Are you sure about that last item? Some people have input lag because they're not using game mode on their TV. Input lag is VERY low for something like Super Mario World.

As for slowdown, the SNES Super Mario World definitely had lag in places I believe, though I'm not 100% sure about 1-3.

Is there a USB adapter for the NES/SNES Classic controllers? (sorry if this has been asked a million times)

as someone who never owned an snes (or an nes) i wish i can pick this up and play some of these great games, maybe ill get lucky and snatch one up, but i have a feeling im going to have to make phone calls to stores or drive around like crazy to find one, we'll see how my hunt goes

The funny thing about the gameplay demo feature is that it's basically a montage of me getting killed, because I usually quit playing and make a new save state right after I die.

I'm going to have to test Kirby again here soon on a CRT, but I used to hit 07/08 victories pretty consistently. On the Mini + HD tv, I can't break 14.

Nice, played through it myself over the weekend. Second time ever for me, but the first in ~13 years and that was the GBA version. Started Friday night, finished Saturday morning. Kept saying "Just one more dungeon" but couldn't put the controller down. Unsurprisingly it still holds up beautifully today.

Thinking of tackling Secret of Mana next. Haven't played through any of the RPGs on the SNES Classic so I'm looking forward to going through all four completely blind.

Finally got mine, Im not from the US so no pre order shitshow happenning to me. I came, I payed and staright going home. And finally got the chance to play FF3/6 for the first time. Im just in but the music is great. Frequently mention to be the greatest RPG on SNES got me pump to play it immediatly (I've play CT too and its great)

Edit: will you guys think this SNES mini is going to be collectable item?

Well it's time for me to give a special shout-out.

As an old-school gamer that group on on the SNES (my GOAT system), this was the first of the "mini" series that I was truly excited for. Memories of ActRaiser, Super Mario World, UN Squadron, Turtles In Time, Street Fighter II Championship Edition, NBA Jam, my lame-ass Super Scope 6....so many of my best memories were on the SNES with my friends. I instantly knew I would want one of these SNES minis when they were announced, but considering how the NES mini went down I was duly skeptical of my chances. Well, fast forward to the pre-order phase and I found myself among the masses who tried and failed grandly trying to get a pre-order in. I was happy to see others squeeze an order in between the madness, but was kinda disappointed that I might not get a chance to relive some of those classic memories outside of regular old emulation.

Fellow GAFer Earthbound64 reached out to me about the SNES classic and let me know that he might have been able to score one for me among some he was able to pre-order along the way. He couldn't promise me that he would have one for me when it came time for orders to be fulfilled (and who could given all the random cancellations we've seen) but that he would try. Given his reaching out to me was totally unsolicited, I could only send him appreciation that he thought of me at all. I asked him what the best way to compensate him for his troubles would be if he was able to happen upon one for me and he refused payment. Not used to any sugh generosity from someone I don't know, I kept pressing on a way to pay him back and he kept on refusing. Well, fast forward a few weeks and sure enough: he was able to get one extra and he wanted to give it to me. *tear* After struggling to convince him to let me pay him, I finally acquiesced.

So this shout-out is to Earthbound64 whose generosity and kindness has made an old-school Nintendo gamer smile. I get to jump into A Link To The Past and Super Mario World again in style for the first time in about 25 years thanks to you.

GAFers are the best, but some are decidedly better than others. Now to figure out how to pay it forward. :-D

For someone who has never played through any SNES RPGs aside from Chrono Trigger, I was wondering which ones I should tackle first?
Chrono Trigger is one of the top RPG of the 16 bit era (for me only beaten by Terranigma) so keep your expectation in check.

As for the RPG in the SNES Classic, they are quite different so it's quite easy to make a choice (on what to play first) depending on your tastes.

Super Mario RPG: RPG that targets newbies of the genre therefore there are action sequences both in the form of mini games and timing commands to increase damage inflicted or the parry effectiveness.
It has turn based battles with some action and visible enemies on screen.
Oh it is also notable for to be one of the few SNES games to use full computer generated graphics.

EarthBound: The best description would be "a weird combination of Dragon Quest template and Peanuts".
It has lots of charm and it's the most mature RPG (in the sense that target adult thinking) of the era despite having children as protagonists.
Turn based battles and visible enemies on screen.

Final Fantasy III (VI): It's the best Final Fantasy.
Turn based battle (although the priority of the turns is in real time) and random encounters.

Secret of Mana: It's the only action RPG on the list though don't mistake it for a pure action adventure like Zelda because the battle system is a mix between Final Fantasy battle system and real time movements that is battles are still ruled by statistics (you can't dodge spells for instance).
It's notable for to be one of the rare case of co-op RPG of the era so if you have a pal to share your enjoyment of the SNES give it a go with him/her.

Are there any snes games I should look into that didn't come out here or snes hidden gems games?

Ganbare Goeman 2 & 3
Tactics Ogre

a lot of square and enix games.

Hopefully a lot should have english translation patches by now.

EDIT:

Man some of those tunes in Earthbound are just soo chilled especially the hospital theme, gives me Animal Crossing vibes

I put Hagane on my system yesterday and while hard as nails, its a really amazing Ninja Gaiden esque game.

Donkey Kong Country question -

Anyone know if you need to successfully complete the bonus stages to gain the extra percentages? Or just find the room?
