So, since this is the community I post in most, I figure I should mention here that I left Japan one week ago. Had an incredible past few months there, but I just don't have the connections I need for the sort of work that I want to be doing there. Taking some time back home to see all my family and friends, because I felt guilty being away from everyone for so long. I may return back to Japan next Spring, or perhaps a bit later.

I hate moving so much, but I move at least once a year. I've lived in 6 different places across three prefectures in Japan in the past three years. Agh.

You were in Japan?

What the fuck is this book?
What was that? I'm confused.

Darkseid is.

Aw shit. Aizo giving up those maid cafes?

You were in Japan?

You were in the Valiant thread, which is like Japan.

Thoughts:

Flash: Meh. I don't want Meena to be a villain. Also, I really like Meena but let's stop pretending like Barry's eventual love interest is anyone except Iris. Even the show gets it now.

Batgirl and the Birds of Prey: This story's pretty cute. The girls saving the boys from potential death at the hands of an unknown sickness? Yeah that works.

Defenders: That was the laziest way to get Deadpool into this story, and I'm kinda bummed that
Kingpin is behind all this
, though I'm loving seeing these street-level heroes interact. Of course Spidey isn't invited to their little group, even tho he's cooler than all of them. XD

Michael Cray: I take it back. This wasn't a bad Oliver Queen twist. Also way better than all the crappy "dark Batmen".

Falcon: Are we stuck with this narrative of "Steve's a jerk", even though they all know it was the Cosmic Cube? Bummer. Still, I liked this first issue--there's a lot of complex stuff as far as Sam being a man of the people, inspiration to other black people to become heroes, etc. etc. Very cool.

Mister Miracle: Still nothing but theories. Basically, it's the most impossible escape Mr. Miracle has ever attempted--escaping from his own mind. It's malfunctioning on him, showing him things...that are obviously wrong. Seems like ALE, but Scott is the Life Equation so that shouldn't work. But then again maybe its why he's the only one who can fight it?

Those are all I've read so far this week. I'll get around to the rest fairly quickly though since I've got a column to write.

I'm wondering what Margaret Stohl's editor is doing. Like, the latest Cap Marvel has a running joke that Jessica Drew won't trust Jessica Jones to watch her kid which doesn't make sense on levels? JJ has a toddler? What parent of a toddler volunteers to babysit? And why would you not trust a person who has a kid to babysit?

This is the same problem I had with the second Red Widow novel, which is supposed to be canon with the MCU but has She-Hulk, Captain Marvel and other female superheroes show up. (Though with the Captain Marvel movie in the 90's, that could still work)

Okay so that's not just me then. Admittedly, the parent of a toddler might volunteer to babysit...but it wouldn't be Jessica Jones. And even if she did, it's weird to say you don't trust her when she's raising a child of her own. I was waiting for her to mention it but NOPE. Went the whole issue and nothin'. I miss Michele Fazekas & Tara Butters--the pre-CW Capt. Marvel was really good.

I think the whenever Strychalski fills in on Gwenpool, that's a sign that Gwen is about to fuck up badly.

Yeah, I'm still on about Gwenpool because no one is talking about this.

I see America is still a thing.

Makes me sad to see one of my two favorite lesser heroes abused so.

At least Red Hood's book is pretty good...somehow...

A mixed bag I'd say. The banner is hideous , but maybe half the stuff below it is actually decent. The other half is .... not.

Given the title of this project , which I can only assume is a fairly clear call to the alt right, and the summary, the actual pitch isn't as politics heavy / skewed as I would have expected. Might be because they apparently have Dixen involved so they need at least some level of respectability ? to

The comments are (surprise surprise) a cesspit though.

Edit - Jeezus, some of the other causes on FreeStartr are delusional at best. And it's basically all Alt-Right stuff. If you wanted to take a stand on Free Speech you'd think you'd find at least some unpopular leftist cause to launch with as well. The less crazy projects here are just dragged down by association and it looks like it's not actually pro-free speech at all since it's pretty much one sided politically.

Did anyone else pick up God Complex #1 from Image? It's a sci-fi detective story. It seems pretty swell so far.

I asked earlier and didnt see anything. I ended up getting it but havent read it yet. Looks really good though from what I saw flipping through it.

Ended up getting God Complex instead of the Dying & the Dead this week.

lol. 100,000 bucks. I could've paid my student loans with that and it got thrown away on garbage. Jeez.

Hold on, what's this you're talking about?

I did, but I haven't read it yet. Hoping it's good.

Gwenpool
fucking murders two villains
in today's issue. But she's a good guy now.

The last time this artist filled in, Gwen
tried to shoot a teenager in the head and got thrown in jail.
So yeah. Calling it a trend.

Hahaha. What a post. You don’t have to miss my knowledge. I still have years of education, years of experience living there, many Japanese friends, and my ongoing interests.
You were in Japan?
Much longer than I’ve been in this community. Haha.
Aw shit. Aizo giving up those maid cafes?
I’ve never been. I did go to a bar where all the waitresses crossdress during my last week, though. That was interesting.

Free speech warriors like this don't actually care about free speech for everyone. Or even know what it means.

They're absolutely
not dead
, but yeah it's clear she's not taking the meaning of "good guy" seriously yet. Man, Gwen's so damaged--she's still slowly becoming her dark self it seems like. Bummer.

Also, man she's
altering reality
, and that's way too much power. I'm concerned her book won't last much longer.

Steve being a jerk is a narrative that existed before the Cosmic Cube fuckery. The very first arc of Sam Cap.

Off Topic for a quick sec:

The Mindy Project is pretty fucking great. Started a couple weeks ago. Half way through S4. Absolutely phenomenal. Also almost to the end of S2 of Nikita, which is also pretty good. Beginning of S2 is a zero to sixty.

We may continue to our regularly scheduled funny books.

I probably wouldn't expect a massive toneshift on Harley. It's been selling really well, and it seems to appeal to a different demographic than most of DCs books, so I can't see them wanting to lose that audience.

(I say that despite Harley being one of the Rebirth books I checked out at step start and then decided to pass on. It clearly knew what it was and what it was doing even if I didn't like it, unlike say Justice League which was trying to be Morrison without much understanding of how that works. )

Started Stephanie Brown Batgirl. Barbara says she used Steph's autopsy photos to stop the last girl who wanted to be Batgirl.

Who was that girl? How did Steph die?

Also, why exactly did Cass give up the cowl? Bruce died? Was it literally just because of Bruce and that's it? He dies, Dick takes over, and she quits? Also she lead the League of Assassins and the Outsiders? Shit mane.

Steph was tortured to death by Black Mask.

It was later retconned (in War Crimes) that Steph didn't die and Leslie had faked her death to keep her safe afterwards. So the autopsy photos were faked.

Cass gave up the Cowl twice. Once just before Infinite Crisis, when she killed Shiva (but left her over a Lazarus Pit) , out of guilt I think, and then redebuted in OYL as a villain (yes it was awful, she was basically a Talia / Shiva cross villain for Tim ). This was later retconned as Slade having been drugging her and she became Batgirl again, and she floated around aimlessly for a while after that since DC had no idea what to do with her, before she gave the Cowl to Steph for reasons that weren't really explained at the time. It may have been explained later but I missed it if so.

That all sounds super dumb.

.....

That all sounds super dumb.

If it helps she did eventually become Blackbat , which was pretty much her being Batgirl again in Hong Kong with some hints of a return to Gotham, but whatever was going to come of that got blown up by Flashpoint turning into the N52 launch instead of just being the yearly event.

Oh yeah, I looked, and it was eventually explained (not a retcon exactly since unlike the other stuff it didn't directly contradict prior cannon) that she gave the Cowl to Steph, because Bruce had told her too if he died and to go to Hong Kong for some reason, which lead into her Red Robin / Batman Incorporated / Black Bat phase.

Man why is Tim such a dick to Steph in this?

Yeah but the previous stuff still seems dumb.

Yeah but the previous stuff still seems dumb.

If it's early Steph-Batgirl it's because a) Dick replaced him as Robin with Damian (who had tried to kill Tim multiple times) b) because no one was believing him when he (correctly) worked out Bruce wasn't dead and c) because Ra's was trying to wear him down mentally to use him as a replacement for Bruce or something.

And yes yes it was. DC made some bloody weird choices with their female characters from just before War Games until roughly Final Crisis.

Remember this book?

It was supposed to be released last November, then was cancelled and was going to be re-solicited for Spring 2017. And now I can't even find it on Image's webpage(except for the interview I linked above).

I know I'm another one that was looking forward to this, it seemed even more of a strange twist that its disspeared as a few issues ago it was advertised as coming soon in the back of a Black Monday Murders issue.

Count me fully in for that Storm book, really been into Bartels stuff since I met her at thought bubble and Coates from writing her in his main Panther series and The Crew seems to write Storm really well. I just hope it has more luck in sales than the Crew and sadly probably the new Panther origin series is going to have.

Metal 3 was fun, again with the crazy obscure DC easter eggs. The warning bit was a little stupid though,
I mean come on clark, ignore everything you saw in that dream, the real warning was chords which spelled out our warning in reverse which was obviously a clue not to come, your such an idiot for not getting that obvious warning right :(
Still got to say off duty rock and roll lois is pretty hot ha
