Before you guys go on a Hollywood witch hunt, how about taking care of the president of USA? The outrage seems kinda ironic when so many americans knowningly elected a sexual predator...

Anyways, news seems to get bigger, I saw today on the french news they were talking about it, the director of the movie "Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain" said everybody knew...

Ok, this Weinstein thing is really confusing to me to more I read about this. Again, I'm not surprised that it was covered for so long, but there are several star actors among the accusers. Paltrow is the weirdest example. I'm not trying to blame her here, but the whole situation is confusing. Weinstein harassed her early in her career, she told Pitt (who then knew about it), who told Weinstein to stay away from Paltrow, yet neither one did anything about it. That movie came out in 1996 by the way.

And I understand feeling ashamed and not wanting to talk about things like this in public, but Paltrow continued with Weinstein and did pretty much one movie per year for Miramax for several years after that. If you go through an experience like that, why in the world would you keep working with that person? McGowan, Paltrow, Pitt, Affleck... that's a pretty remarkable list of people who kept quiet. And I'm sure the list is much, much longer.

Actors basically have to sell their souls to make it in Hollywood. Weinstein own(ed) Hollywood.

Imagine that Hollywood is a company, and the only company in that entire industry. You've spent your life dreaming of getting employed in that industry. You can't rock the boat against the CEO because that would mean the end of your dreams and career. The CEO knows this so he can do anything he wants to his employees without fear of repercussions.

what's ironic about it?
So because one horrible person got to power (probably by people most of whom aren't outraged at this) we shouldn't be outraged about another thing?

Trump did get plenty of criticism for it and still does, but there's only so much one can do about it now. And everyone knows he's a terrible person already. But here we have a situation in which a lot of people were either complicit or did horrible things themselves, and people didn't know.

The saying about absolute power corrupts absolutely is more accurate than many think. It's human nature for those in power to oppress those that don't. It sucks but it's true.

Funny how Obama never once was corrupted and had a scandal in the 8 years he was in power. It's not a written rule although you can strongly make the argument that the white man falls heavily under this trap due to history of systematic power favoring them.

I'm talking mostly in general and not slinging out specific people here, but seeing this make the big news and being talked about so much just because it concerns Hollywood stars... I mean yeah the guy was a man of power, but compared to the fucking president of the United States?

And when it comes these Affleck affairs seems people knew since it's on tape, just like Trump famous "grab them by the pussy". Hollywood apparently knew too about Weinstein. They are just speaking up now that the affair came out of the woodworks.

That's bullshit, basically they can fuck for an oscar? They should definitely have spoken about it instead of letting that fat pig continuing his harrassment.
They're saying on the news that even if they get some testimonies now that it might not stick because of the law in different states and that it was a while ago.

I wouldn't say that. I'd say that power let's you get away with things that most people don't get away with, so you keep doing them and usually get worse about it since you either have no one there to check you or enablers to actually help you. So basically, you have to be pretty "pure", as it were, to not be corrupted by power, and most people aren't very pure. White men are more likely to have power, so they're more likely to be enabled, but I don't believe they're more likely to be innately corruptible.

I was trying to find a point in your two posts but adding on this victim blaming at the end made it clear.

Can we start expecting a batman beyond movie now? Not sure how we are getting an affleck batman movie now.

I agree with this as well. People want to attack celebrities for their actions (and rightfully so), but i think we should be going after the head celebrity i chief first. He should have never been president after his history of the same shit.

Yeah, that's what I thought also. Says a lot about the industry when everyone assumes this is the way things work in entertainment. "Just Harvey being Harvey." But like someone already said, Paltrow and Jolie are Hollywood royalty. Their parents were big names as well. You would think if someone would be able to stand up against a guy like this, those two would be it.

I'm not victim blaming, people shit on Affleck for his twitter post and being complicit of the act, in my mind all people who knew about it before and didn't speak up are one the same. Or you can link it to how I find it ironic that people can elect a guy who has the same behaviour towards women and manages to find himself POTUS.

On another note, it's getting political too, since he was a donator for Hilary Clinton. Damn...

So NOW Affleck is an asshole? Not like when he cheated on his wife or anything ?

We hear stories of big time celebrities being involved in infidelity all the time and are shocked when they do crap like this? GTFO

As young actresses in Hollywood, they barely have any more power than someone from Kansas moving to LA and auditioning everywhere. It's easier for them to get into meetings with agents and producers, but they don't have any real power. They could tell their parents, but that's why he tries to start of playing it cool by asking for massages or the like first before trying to get "overtly sexual". So that that's the story they're telling if they're not interested instead of "he asked me to get naked or do something to him sexually".

No, not fuck for an Oscar.

More like fuck to not get immediately blacklisted from any project in Hollywood forever.

From their point of view, they had to put up with him or risk never working in the industry again. As young women trying to make it in Hollywood, they had zero leverage over Weinstein. Less than zero.

That's easy to say as an armchair analyst, not as easy when the projects you're working with are still run and funded by this guy. You have no idea the power this guy has over the industry.

If enough of them tell on him, no amount of power will save his ass though.

Might be naive of me but I wouldn't want any part of that industry if I have to make it work like this. There are other ways, and world doesn't revolve around Hollywood either (even though I know it brings the big bucks).

Hope they kick him off Reeves' Batman. Dudes like this have no place in the entertainment industry.

How is infidelity in any way comparable to sexual harassment/assault?

How does that make it political? People using this to attack democrats is the dumb bullshit the right usually does. Accepting money from someone who turns out to be a piece of shit doesn't automatically make you complicit in the shit they did.

Gotta admit this whole episode is souring me on wanting to see JL, whole thing is so sleazy.

How else do you want to classify your insistence on shifting responsibility onto the victims? You seem to not be familiar with the toll sexual assault takes on people and ignorant or naive of how power dynamics affect that.

Most of these women didn't know who else was involved. At best, they may have known there were other victims in general, but they didn't specifically know it was Patlrow, or Jolie, or Argento, or everyone else that has come forward so far. They would have thought they'd be coming out alone, which would have been incredibly risky for them professionally. Part of the reason this story is coming out now is because the reporters did the job of getting multiple women to go on record at the same time, which makes it much harder for any particular one of them to be targeted.

Sorry not saying in this type of way, I'm watching the french news here and they said it's taking political proportions based on that and seeing as Hilary had to comment on it.

No he's the sole responsible. I know it's not easy for rape victims to denounce their attacker.

So what's the point of that post? "Dude did a crappy thing so why are you surprised he committed a crime"?

"So NOW Affleck is an asshole? Not like when he cheated on his wife or anything ?"

Or Ben Affleck always been an asshole to the poster when he cheated on his wife.

Yeah I've seen people being critical of it, the same type who try to downplay their sexual-assaulter in chief. It's pretty ridiculous.

Over in Britain this Weinstein stuff is a pretty big headline, then everything with Affleck a subset of that. Dunno if Affleck will be able to recover.

I'm not so sure, I mean I may sound like a broken record but in a world where a guy like Trump can ascend to President of the USA, anything else is possible.
You think people will massively boycott Justice League because of the Affleck story?

The groping was caught on tape in 2003 and no one gave a fuck about it, just resurfaced cause he decided to get all righteous on twitter.
On sure thing it does with internet nowadays though is put this story on top of the page for everyone to see when you google "Ben Affleck".

No.

No they do not.

They absolutely do. There are men with power everywhere. Some of those men abuse that power. And some women too, as we've seen in those recent scandals about teachers committing statutory rape. But the overwhelming majority of sexual predators who abuse their positions of power are men.

And it's very important to be conscious of this fact, because if you assume any group of people are above suspicion, you're giving them carte blanche to abuse their power without fear of reprisal. See the Catholic church, Jimmy Saville, Bill Cosby, etc.

So yes, everywhere.

Well if I'm being real what made me think that is that my sister brought it up. That's usually my barometer for what's going on in the mainstream!

Affleck being a complete asshole to a couple of women seems to me like an order of magnitude different from the Weinstein case. He should know better of course, and the timing is really the worst possible for him.

But not all men are in positions of power. There are men who have simply associated with guilty parties who are being accused of sexual harassment. This is dangerous ground as being accused of such things can destroy lives, even if the accused is proven innocent.

There’s a fair few men within the gaming industry who are sleazy and scummy as hell, but does that mean all men within the industry are the same? No. Go after the guilty parties, the men with power, but don’t just label all men as sexual predators.

By the way, Seydoux mentions in her article:

Another director I worked with would film very long sex scenes that lasted days. He kept watching us, replaying the scenes over and over again in a kind of stupor. It was very gross.

Is this about "Blue is the Warmest Colour"?

Most likely. She has spoken about how uncomfortable she was during the filming of that movie before.

Trump's sexual assault was never proven by any of the people that accused him. The only evidence was the Hollywood access tape. I feel like if he was actually guilty of it, the accusers would've gone further. Feels like that all faded out. Until Trump's accusers are verified and legit, I'll be right with you. But there's nothing verifying that he actually did anything.

This is different. This guy legitimately confessed to doing it and multiple women came out verifying that he indeed sexually assaulted them. Trump's innocent until proven guilty. Just because you don't like him doesn't mean he isn't innocent until proven guilty.

I've heard about some creepy shit happening everywhere I've worked at some point and have often heard stories from close friends about something happening where they work. It's probably everywhere.

You obviously haven't heard about Fassbender. Word is he's a pretty big douche too.

Well, shit. I've heard literally nothing him one way or the other tbh. I'll probably look it up at some point.
