Almost 8 hours in and I just finished chapter 3 lol. Good timing too because I was just about ready for the game to give me something new.
Now, I noticed someone mention theenemies and how you can't stealth them. Well, on theflamethrowerboss, I was able to stealth him like three or four times in the first fight, and then completely unable to in my following three attempts, where I had to completely gun him down. I don't know whether being able to stealth him or not being able to stealth him was the bug.O'Neil
This is better than Resident Evil 4.

Theis unexpectedly sort of fun. Also the silly quips between Sebastian and Tatiana depending on your high score are just as unexpected. This one in particular: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4X13EmS3rsIshooting range/tetris mini game
Also, I think theare kind of shit.Freezing bolts
Also want to comment while some have been negative on the art direction, there are many points in my opinion that the game has gorgeous art direction. I was playing on Medium Settings (my PC is getting older now, need to replace soon), but was still wowed multiple times. Here's a few screens I took, and avoiding anything more spoilery (though there are various locations through the game shown here):

Completely agree. Even little things where you think your just grabbing ammo, if turns into you getting teleported and having to figure out how to get out and stuff. One of the smartest open world area's I have seen.I finished it last night at just OVER 8 hours haha. I did everything I possibly could... including killing every enemy (playing on nightmare). I died A LOT... Load times are pretty brutal after dying. I was happy to see some surprises, and there was a lot of purposeful design to it, unlike a lot of open world areas. I'm not sure I like this approach more than the intense, linear experience of the first game, but I am definitely enjoying it a lot. Can't wait to jump in again when the sun goes down.
Well, the first TEW was for sure.
Dunno about this one though.
The first TEW may have a chance against RE4...
Man, I am the biggest TEW1 fanboy here but I totally disagree. RE4 is one of the best game ever made, if not the best.
Yep, it's a clever callback to the first game.Anyone notice thatwhen you go back to this room in a "vision" in the house near the gas station on the first map, the letterboxing returns? Not sure if that's something that pops up often, but it seemed like a reference to me.
Eh, TEW1 is way too loose-feeling. Its rare I get through an encounter without asking myself why did that happen?. Hit boxes being wonky, enemies not reacting properly to attacks, matches failing to work, etc. RE4 is laser-like in its precision, and its pacing makes it infinitely replayable. No AAA gaming forced walk sequences to suffer through.
People complaining about the art direction have to understand, the first game was set in a Serial killers head, the second game is in a childs head. The sections that then show more later in the game are more akin to the first. Game was fantastic improved on pretty much everything over the first one, just not the VA.
This is how I'm currently feeling while playing through TEW2.
I felt totally in control in the first game, I feel like I'm fighting the game's mechanics often in this one.
I might as well ask in general- people who completed the game, in the end which upgrades did you use and recommend?
TEW1 and TEW2 are both much, MUCH scarier than RE4.

What? There has literally bee nothing "scary" at all in this game. It has some good audio, but that's pretty much the extent of the creepiness, and there's like a total of three jump scares. Despite all of the claims on how RE4 was just a "dumb third person shooter", it didn't completely eschew the RE atmosphere. It had that in spades, and it too had really good audio on top of that.

The first Evil Within is a flawed hidden gem and a low-key classic that suffers from a campaign that has great moments but is otherwise extremely uneven.
Resident Evil 4 is like a literal act of God. It is not possible to make a game that good on talent alone, there is some metaphysical intervention involved somewhere.
We are in two completely different ballparks here.
I will say, I think they need to have active dodge button or something akin to like RE6. So many times things got to close to me and really felt there was no way to just get away quickly without taking or almost taking a hit.

As empowered as Leon could feel at times, he had nothing on Sebastian's ability to simply run away and crouch. That removes ALL tension in this game outside of boss fights.
TEW2 feels a bit more sluggish with the startup on sprinting and generally slower movement (placebo or no?), but the combat feels a bit more polished imo. Less wacky occurrences for me so far.
I see Mikami has cracked the code on recapturing Julia Voth's likeness while changing and improving things just enough to avoid a lawsuit.
Still recognizably Kidman from TEW1, too:
TEW2 definitely has tighter movement and more responsive controls than TEW1.
TEW1 and TEW2 are both much, MUCH scarier than RE4.
RE4 still has peerless pacing, but TEW1 and TEW2 are also great.
Although RE4's lack of ground finishers makes it feel a bit limited today.
Ultimately, I'm just happy to have three amazing games instead of one.

But RE4 has the Island, which outside of a few moments, brought the game down as a whole. Now, REmake on the other hand... An act of God indeed.
If RE4 was made today, there will be a long overdramatic opening where Leon can only walk but not run or shoot, and you will forced to stop and listen to unskippable conversations....now that I think of it, isn't the beginning of RE5 & RE6 just like that...
*Sigh* Fucking modern game design....all style, no substance, all talking, no gameplay.

One of the first things I upgraded was the bottle counter attack. It doesn't solve everything but it certainly makes encounters a lot less annoying.
The cutscene at the beginning of EW2 where Sebastian fights the zombie lady in one of the first houses actually made me laugh out loud. Why exactly am I watching this instead of playing it?

Absolutely. See above.TEW2 has tigher movement and more responsive controls? What?
I might as well ask in general- people who completed the game, in the end which upgrades did you use and recommend?
RE4 was scary for me due to its tension in numbers and overwhelming odds mixed with WTF is happening stuff. I never felt it was very truly scary otherwise and that's just from me, being a long time horror fan. TEW 2 at least tries to do various scares, from noises, things moving suddenly, jump scares, ghost like shit, and atmosphere.
I've never felt the Island was a dip in quality, in fact when I first read that that was the general consensus on the internet, I was kind of puzzled. The Regenerators, U-3, the chopper action sequence (best balls-to-the-wall action sequence in the entire franchise), etc. All awesome.
I don't think I'm particularly a fanboy for the game either and turn a blind eye to its flaws, for instance I do think the final boss is underwhelming. I just never had a problem with the Island as a whole.
People seem to complain about the controls for this game... I kinda maxed on the combat skills and popping headshots left and right. No issue with controls.
Not sure about your Evil Within gameplay critique but I agree, RE4 has laser-like precision, there's absolutely zero tolerance in its control and gameplay, I actually never encountered a glitch in all of my 30+ playthroughs, in fact, back then I don't even know video game have gltiches.
You mean in similar ways to the first enemy you meet in RE4, who attacks you, you dodge in a "cutscene: and then you fight it. Is it really that different?
TEW2 has tigher movement and more responsive controls? What?
When I say TEW2 is scarier, I don't mean it in the "I'm trying to beat a videogame" panic induced by RE4 throwing a billion enemies at you in a huge action sequence. I'm talking more about the enemies themselves being creepy and unsettling, and the overall atmosphere of uncertainty that comes with a shifting environment that feels unsettlingly haunted. Also, I was never hurting for resources in RE4, but I definitely am at times in TEW2.Tension and dread are very closely related. One is more of an expectation, another in the moment. That's also why both Demon's Souls and Dark Souls could be considered horror games.
TEW1 doesn't touch RE4 at all. Enemies are worse, enemy feedback is worse, guns are worse, pacing is worse, story is worse, controls are worse, and there are tons of instant kills. TEW1 is structured far more like RE4 though although projectile enemies are introduced sooner. On top of that it's just a more methodical approach than RE4. You have traps to disassemble, stealth, and a severe lack of ammo.
RE4 is like Ultimate DOOM in that it's essentially 10/10 and has yet to be touched. And that's ok. I mean, I don't let DOOM keep me from enjoying other shooters.
