MoviePass (Unlimited Films in Theaters) Drops to $9.95 a Month

I'm angry that I'm currently paying for a service I can't use. Apparently there is a bug with Goodrich Theaters right now, so I can't get e-tickets. However, I've gotten them before that bug appeared, so my charges have started. I've not received my card, signed up on 8/19, and my app shows that I should have a card. No response from support at all. Bleh. When the e-ticketing worked, it was great. But I'm just frustrated now.

Ah, just banned then, unless you spend exactly the same amount as a movie from that theater costs. I mean, it’d be foolish of them to not at least check if all purchases from all Moviepass users at each theater are for the same amounts, since that’d be really easy to automate. Theaters don’t have a wide variety of prices, generally one price for matinee, one price for every other showing, and possibly a weekly discount day. So their software would see that all transactions from a theater might be like $7.82, $14.56, and $6.50, and then when they see a different price for one transaction from that theater, flag the transaction for more thorough review.

This is probably better for my health anyways. Thanks for helping me see reason, Dreamwriter.

You just stopped me from becoming a criminal.

I saw Blade Runner today, but I didn't realize I had arrived at the theater when only the IMAX showings were available. I paid cash instead. I don't like manipulating the system as I think it's going to lead to changing the rates. Probably inevitable, but I don't need to speed that up.

Wish you didn't have to be within 100 yards of the theater. Would like to tie the card to the Regal app and check in from home then buy the ticket on the app.
People are already screwing things up with buying tickets for points but not going in, and that's with the inconvenience of physically being at the theater. I don't want them able to do so from the comfort of their couch. Nor do I want reddit to collectively decide to make some shit-ass movie a big hit with millions of false ticket purchases.

If they didn't have that requirement the system would be ripe for abuse. I wouldn't put it past someone to create a farming company that would use the service to artificially boost ticket sales for any given movie.

The Princess Bride is in theatres Oct. 15th and 18th and I want to see it. But it's a Fathom event so it won't show/be greyed out in the app?

No go on the Star Wars double feature either, eh?

So I'm trying to cancel my account (card won't activate and their customer service people won't get back to me) but the stupid app won't let me cancel my membership. I hit the cancel button and try to submit it but it just spins and nothing happens. Any suggestions? Obviously I can't get in contact with these idiots, but I think the only way to cancel is through the broken app.

Doesn't work on the higher priced or premium events like that.

Really hope my card finally comes by Monday. I have off and I'd love to go to the movies then. They told me on Twitter that my card is on its way, but I don't really believe them.

man lol at this point you should just refund

I haven't been billed yet, other than the temporary charge that has been off my account since August, so at least this waiting hasn't cost me anything. Other than the price of the tickets I paid for IT and Blade Runner.

If the showtime in the app is red then it works. Blade Runner 2049 2D IMAX is currently red at the IMAX closest to me.

I'm SOOOO happy that you were able to answer this question. I'm going to see it tonight and I wanted to see the XD version in 2D and it's in RED, but I was nervous.

You're forgetting the best way. A charge back. Just make sure you don't use it again even though their system is garbage and it'll probably still work.

And yeah, some IMAX showings are in the app and even labeled IMAX for me. Don't know what's up with that. But they do work.

Helios & Matheson Analytics Inc., the backer of the controversial $10 MoviePass subscription, fell as much as 21 percent after warning the money-losing cinema service may not make it.

Helios boosted its support for MoviePass to $11.5 million from $5 million as part of an August deal to acquire a majority stake, according to a regulatory filing. At the same time, Helios said MoviePass's auditors are expected to warn of substantial doubt about its ability to continue as a going concern.

lol, no shit. I don't think MoviePass will survive as a service until Dec 1st, although to be fair Thor 2 and Justice League are the only big movies in Nov. Murder on the Orient Express too I guess?

I just wonder on what date they are going to snap and announce something crazy like you can't use it more than once a week or it won't work with rewards programs (which would be fair, but unfortunately the idiotic way moviepass has structured their systems they really just can't do it) or they are going to ban the people who have used it more than 15 times a month or some such arbitrary number.

I can't complain at all, I've seen 15 movies in the time I've had the card, pretty much more movies than I saw in the past 4 years combined, so I'll be sad if it goes away but it wouldn't change much for me.

MoviePass's meta data is notoriously bad. Their terms of service say you are only allowed to see non premium movies, and XD is listed as premium, so you are technically breaking the rules if you try to use it on XD, RPX, Dolby Digital, 2D IMAX, etc.

It also has a max load amount that may or may not match the actual ticket price. For example in my area it allows me to check into evening Dolby AMC Digital screenings, even though it shouldn't be, and those cost $15.49 here. The max MoviePass loads up onto the debit card is $11.50. I can pay the $4 extra myself and go, but I am technically breaking their ToS. Regal cinemas kiosk may charge more than the amount covered, if it does the transaction is rejected due to insufficient funds. You can ask the clerk to only charge $x (what is $x? you kind of have to figure that out) at the box office on the MP card and pay the rest yourself, but again, you are breaking MoviePass TOS doing that.

I don't think MoviePass has any way to actually know if you are playing by the rules or not, but I have not seen any definitive information on what is sent to them when a purchase is made. Like if the total amount is sent and the amount that got charged, then they would know you are buying something more expensive than they allow.

Ordered Sept 1st, got my pass on Tuesday, went to my first movie last night, and it worked like a charm. Despite the long wait I'm still pleased with it, will be staying subscribed until they're forced to raise prices or go bankrupt :)

Don't know when it'll open (probably holidays this year or very early next year) but they are building a movie theater in my city and once it opens and if they are supported and this is still be offered at this price I'll certainly look into getting this!

I also ordered on August 15th and still haven't been gotten it. I know of several others who ordered the same day and still haven't gotten it. It's pretty ridiculous.

Same here. Both my girlfriend and I haven't received the cards and we signed up on August 15th.

Finally got a response from Moviepass's CS team on twitter. Said the same B.S about have increased production and working around the clock to fill back orders. Said they should be coming soon, but couldn't get much more specific. Of course they started saying they were focusing on back orders way back in September...so not much confidence.

Yikes. Not surprising though, I think most of us expected this wouldn't last long. MoviePass has been around for five years and were constantly tweaking their pricing tiers and restrictions, they had to know better than anyone that offering a "$9.99 unlimited movies with no restrictions" pricing was batshit insane and unsustainable.

Kinda feels like the CEO just made that pricing decision on a whim and expected everything to fall into place later on. MoviePass was totally unprepared in every aspect (website, app, customer service, etc) and don't seem to have any partnerships in place either. Hopefully they last until the end of the year at least, but I think the combination of Thor and Justice League are going to absolutely destroy them financially.

Like you, I've already gotten my money's worth out of this. Have seen 15+ movies and earned a bunch of AMC Stubs points in the process. I think I have around $80 in Stubs rewards at the moment, so that's like ~13 matinee tickets that I can fall back on whenever MoviePass inevitably dies.

No shit this wasn't going to last. We have people on Gaf using it just to collect Stubs points and not even see the fucking films.

I'm totally expecting a price increase and limits. Don't even care if it works with rewards anymore. As long as the price increase is something to like 20 and maybe a limit of 8-10 films a month. I'm content. Hell, I could deal with 2 a week or something.

This is beyond ridiculous, I ordered on 8/15 and I still have not received a card. My girlfriend who ordered the same day and lives with me has had hers for at least a month. I don't understand how they haven't stopped sending out cards to people that signed up after and just gotten the past orders straightened out yet. Every day I go to the mailbox hoping it'll arrive only to leave disappointed for 2 months straight. Ugh, I just want to go see some movies.

Recieved mine. It was shipped the old address, had my roommate pick it up. Used the card today at Cinemark to see The Foreigner. It was seamless, great experience.

Regular price is $13.25 here and the full amount is loaded onto my card every time.
Yep. Typical ticket price here is $12.99. On weekends and during certain times it goes up. Blade Runner on release night was $16, and Moviepass loaded $16 onto my card. Don't know where this $11.50 limit came from.

Happy 2 month anniversary to anyone who signed up the day the price changed!

Still no card for me, or any definitive sign that it is in fact arriving.

I remember reading that Alamo Drafthouse wasn't one of the included theater chains but when I check the Brooklyn Alamo it's there on the app and none of the shows are darkened. Before I waste a bit of time can anyone confirm it will work?

If it's on the app it'll work.
Some Drafthouses participate but not all.

It works but they frequently have issues w/ showtimes for them.

Using it is such a great feeling. Just choosing the movie and showtime on the app and paying your tickets like you're just using a regular debit card. Instead of spending $25, we ended up paying just $19.90 for the two subscriptions, so using it just once and already saving money is really cool.

Used my card for a third time at a third theater. No issues and this was the first time I was at my AMC since like 2014 or 2015. It's still not my favorite theater but without being able to buy tickets in advance from home they're going to get a lot more business from me because otherwise I'd keep sticking to the best theater in town which is what I did before MoviePass.
