SNES Mini Classic Hacking | More games, more borders, more gooder.

I´m going to use this post to share my backgrounds. Check my Google Drive folder to download.

- I have more background to share. This post will be updated.
- Original Art MarioRPG.
- Original Art for Turtles in Time.
- Can't find the Original author for the Zeal one.
- Added a QR Code for Mortal Kombat Bg who leads to a gamefaqs url with moves and finishers.
- I guess i have the same idea for snesbox and snesus but i could not post them until today. I'll share them anyway.

Can you guess which bg is my favourite?

This was a hell of a week at my work, but making these backgrounds was very relaxing.

Absolutely love these, and thanks for making the Nintendo Power ones.

Any chance we could get more? There are so many great NP covers that I bet a lot of cool borders could come from them.

In fact, I wouldn't mind seeing more borders based around classic ads. Right now I'm curious about an attempt based around Nintendo Cereal:

ad_nintendo_cereal_system.jpg

Though that would probably be more appropriate for the NES Mini (if I manage to ever get one).

Also someone please make more Mega Man borders.

re: borders not working

Another thing to keep in mind is if you rename the folders but not the files inside that will cause them to not show up.

No, because that's a read only folder. There's a bit in the OP about how to replace art for the OG21.

Lol. I swear i´ve read OP like 500 times. i don't know how i missed that. Thanks.

Thanks to you pal.
Yes i have more backgrounds to come. I just want to make sure using good quality sources (because you can see all the image imperfections in a big tv), optimizing png and making to work for both ways 4:3 and pix perfect).

Right now my laptop is busy rendering 3d but i think tomorrow i can upload more.

Okay, understood.

Really hope someone can patch those games with the text issue. I really want to try Rudras, and at least with Secret of Mana it only affects the main menu.

Not sure how much SD3 is affected.

I'm playing Rudra's Treasure now (couple hours in). I pretty much don't remember that there's an issue until I read about it on NeoGAF, that's how much it affects my enjoyment. :D Just play, it's a complete non-issue.

Wasn't planning on doing this, but since it's so easy I might as well.

I'd like to have Translated Dragon Quest V as well as Terranigma on the console.

What exactly is the benefit of doing this instead of just emulating on PC? Does the SNES Classic do a better job even though they are roms? Don't really understand the benefit, but I'm probably missing something.

Having an 80 dollar emulator box that has the original feeling controllers and I just turn it on and it just works is a pretty good reason

The novelty of having a complete customized SNES library on a little SNES system. Plus its nice having a cool menu that you can modify to your liking. I imagine most who bought the SNES mini bought it to enjoy some games, and just have a novel way to play it.

Form factor, controllers, and yes the emulation is better than SNES9x or ZNES.

Less input lag also is what I’m told.

Will it ever be possible to add some kind of fast forward function to this? Other than using retroarch I guess?

Don't know why anyone wouldn't put retroarch on this. You don't even know it's there when you are playing games. And only the games you put on that need it will use it, everything else uses the stock emulator.

The controllers can easily be used on a PC with an adapter. The emulation may be better than snes9x 2010 that hakchi uses (and even this is debatable given the lesser compatibility and sound issues with Canoe) but it's miles off the quality of the latest snes9x on PC. And snes9x on PC is still way behind Higan.

The input lag is better than if you are using a Raspberry Pi but no better than any other PC emulator.

Agree that the form factor and tidy frontend with the nice boxart is a big plus.

There was nothing out there for Super Famicom Wars apart from the logo... So I made this boxart design for the mini (using art from the japanese gameboy wars box... which itself was only availibale in low res wahhhh). Use if so desired:

Snip!

Edit: Made some progress... am going to redo with new found assets!

Snes mini looks, sounds and plays like a console. Thats worth way more that slightly better emulation.

Has the drive with icon images been updated lately? I am hoping some more that I need drops in there. Or are they all done being made?

Hey guys,

so I don't have access to a Windows computer right now, only macs. I heard something about booting a mac into Windows temporarily that could maybe work to hack my SNES mini? Could you guys be kind enough to help me with that? I've never done this before.

Thank you

So I have been using Retroarch on the SNES Classic and I tried Star Tropics for NES. I changed the video settings to 4:3 but when I move up and down on a map, I get emulation distortion. I guess I've been spoiled by the actual emulation of the SNES classic.

Is there a way that I can get into the settings through a notepad file? I want to edit the video_aspect_ratio and input "1.143" This is the correct ratio for the NES and it isn't selectable via the GUI options. Perhaps this might fix the issue I am having.

If not, do I just need to get used to bad emulation again with Retroarch? I heard good things about Retroarch but so far I am not impressed.

Cycle accurate emulation like Higan provides is virtually identical to the real hardware behaviour. Saying it's only slighly better simply isn't true and doesn't do justice to what an achievement it is.

It looks like a console sure. But it sounding or playing like one is somthing that every emulator achieves by their nature, even one as awful and outdated as zsnes. Those are not points in its favor like form factor, ease of use and front end aesthetics which are the real draws.

Sorry if it’s been asked before, but how do I add custom borders to the built-in games (without adding duplicate versions of the games)?

Also, has anyone gotten tha Namingway patch of FFII to work? The game either won’t boot for me or it boots and shows a bunch of corrupted garbage on screen.

It also requires much beefier hardware than the snes classic and would cost you more. It's okay if an officially licensed Nintendo emulator, case, controllers, and 21 legal game cores isn't for you... But for a lot of people it is. Bonus that it can play even more than those 21 to those with the correct dumps.

OK man, you win have a cookie, now can we go back to discussing hacking the SNES mini classic. I'm sure there's a proper thread for Higan somewhere.

Back on topic, I'm so happy Goof Troop is working 100% now!

Google for an FAQ on "boot camp" and you should be able to find a way to install windows on your mac. It's pretty easy, download a windows ISO from microsoft and launch boot camp assistant in your mac.

no, it is for me which is why i bought one. really enjoy it too and love having two new official controllers. like i said, its got an awful lot going for it, no criticism on my end.

but if guy says that its better than snes9x and has less lag then other solutions then i'm allowed to correct them am i not?

Having an issue where every time I shut off the Classic, I get the C8 error message.

It powers off eventually, but I'd rather try and fix this. Any ideas?

Does the new Hakchi update do what I think it means? Don't have to reflash for games nad mods?

"Scripts autoupdate, so you don't need to reflash custrom kernel after every update"

Checked it out myself. While it is bearable, it's also rather annoying.

If anyone is looking to work on patching a game around its issues, please work on this one. I really want to try it out with its issues fixed.

It is not possible to patch this issue, it's an emulator (canoe) problem. The game is actually emulating hi-res mode correctly, but is displaying it incorrectly.

We're not sure yet why, because you can even copy a rom from the system (secret of mana) and put it back in and it won't work. This implies the emulator is hardwired in some way.

And playing it on Retroarch introduces lag, correct (as well as making the Classic menu run slower)?

Hope a proper workaround is discovered either way.

It's a turn based RPG as far as I remember, input lag shouldn't be noticeable. Not sure on the later as I don't have RA on my snesce.

Is there any way to do some kind of overclocked modded rom for starfox 1 and 2? I finally got around to doing the first level of star fox 1 and man, the framerate is brutal.
