Autumn Anime 2017 |OT| Makes us all rotten

30 anime series for a whole year aren't a lot at all. If their target is 30 series for 2018, that seems kinda low really, considering how they already announced like 10 for early 2018 at their conference earlier this year. There's no doubt they are counting both ORIGINAL original titles, as well as the ones they are licensing for worldwide exclusives outside of Japan. Given that Netflix is the leading international streaming business, and how there are dozens of anime series every season in Japan.... I would expect an aggressive push to be closer to 40+ series tbh.

Actual number is much lower since they mean 12-13 episode series probably. So one full 22-52 episode series could count as 2-4 series in their definition.

it'd be nice if netflix used their money on anything other than Berserk as the fandom will never be happy unless its prohibitively expensive .

like go make vinland saga or something instead

they should adapt the rest of the world god only knows.
announcing at the same time that part of that money was to buy Manglobe and resurrect them.

That's not how Netflix addresses titles. They don't care about episode counts. A 50 episode series is no different from a 10 episode series in this context.

I have to imagine the inevitable second season of Castlevania will also count as one of the thirty.

On a serious note, one series I'd definitely like to see them do is adapt the rest of Magi.

it would be nice if netflix did a bersek sequel. it's crazy to think that after all these years all we have gotten is the original series.

I actually liked the Golden Age Trilogy. :p

Kawamoto's game still on point.
This is kind of bad now. The storyboarding has taken a huge drop without Matsumoto and both episodes remind me of the weaker ones from the first season. The Blood Breeds aren't interesting villains as they're way too straightforward and due to Leo's contributions, they don't seem much of a threat now. That's not the big problem though, it's that Takayanagi is trying to ride off Matsumoto's style and approach but doesn't have his own flair to add so the whole production comes off as a B-team effort. There is a flashback that takes up half the episode and it's presented in the most boring manner possible. I'm trying to view this season as its own thing however it takes so much from the first season that I can't view it in isolation and it doesn't execute that approach nearly as well. Other than pictures of the waifu, I wasn't interested in taking any screencaps from this episode until the ED. You can see right there how much better of a storyboarder Matsumoto is.
This shot of a falling star being reflected in Michella's eye is more artistic and beautiful than anything in the actual episode.

Edit: I forgot to mention that this scene has me completely puzzled.
What the fuck? Did Klaus and Steven just timeskip for a period of months or something? Also I guess Klaus/Steven were friends before the Collapse as well? I thought Klaus came when the Collapse happened but the way the two were interacting implied they had been friends for a while at that point.

I generally agree with Jarmel. I can see why people found the plot of this episode particularly interesting (finally flashing back to the event that created Hellsalem's Lot), but a lot about the execution felt lacking. For instance, part of the climax involves Klaus holding out for a long time against the Blood Breed, but in practice it felt like a handful of seconds, against an attack he seemed to have no difficulty defending. The episode from the previous season where Klaus plays 4D demon chess did a much better job selling the stakes in a similar situation.

The expository dialogue between Klaus and Steven during the flashback was also really grating. Though I guess the episode also handled my nitpicks about Federal Hall, in its own way.

My understanding is that the spell that the outside human casters used on the city basically returned NYC to our world and merged it with the overlapping demon realm to make it stable again. I guess the change happened instantaneously. Otherwise it wouldn't make any sense.

And yeah, I'd thought Libra came into existence after Hellsalem's Lot, but I guess people were doing supernatural shit in our world beforehand in secret?

Made In Abyss 13 (FINAL)

I'm at a loss of words. TL;DR: Probably, AOTY.

I can't imagine anything coming out the rest of this year that can compete with this show. Everything top to bottom was stellar: art, animation, OST, direction, story, everything.

I cried like a baby during
Mitty's death
. I was teary during the whole buildup but when
Nanachi ran over to her for her final goodbye
, I just lost it. I needed this ugly cry man.
Like Nanachi
, I was heartbroken but I knew this was the right thing to do. Though the show ultimately
ended in a positive note
, I felt like it really fucking earned it. Now, a new journey awaits our leads.

I love the lore and mystery of this world but I don't know if I want more. There's a lot that was left unanswered but I oddly feel very satisfied. I think the length of the episode really helped. Things didnt feel rushed and it gave the viewer a chance to cool down. As much as I want to discover the answers, I feel like I've had enough of
young children being brutalized and having the worst fucking things possible happen to them
. Maybe after some time I might pick up the manga but at least for now, this is where my journey ends.

Oh yeah, Kevin Penkin is a master. What a soundtrack.

I'm pretty happy about the first adaption from 1997. Something in the veins of that would have been nice.

What's a stoty.

ost of the year

which is true

I understand ducky's hesitance to grant MiA AotY, it is such a cruel thing the anime does to its viewers by giving us something so good with something very bad in between. Even if it doesn't stand out overall, it's painful to recommend this openly with the obligation to warn.

Maybe I'm wrong then. I haven't read the source, but I was under the impression that volume 1 ended with the bath scene revealing
Chihiro was female
, which we saw at the end of this episode.

That scene is at the end of the first book, it could be that the anime won't follow the light novel closely, which is kind of interesting considering Itsuki's and Haruto's experiences, I had figured that Hirasaka Yomi was simply writing about the experience of turning haganai into an anime. After looking at the website I see that there is a voice actor for
Kaiko
but not for later characters. I think that would mean it will end somewhere around 4, but I would love to see it end at the end of 5
I don't like Haruto
.

Guys any scifi/space opera anime recommendation?

I have watched:
LoGH
Crest and Banner of Stars
Gundam
Macross
Uchuu Senkan Yamato
Tytania
Kidou Senkan Nadesico
Toward the Terra
Ideon
Dunbine
Knights of Sidonia
Captain Harlock

Any other great one i have missed?

Children of the Whale - 02 or Blushing Children

That council is pretty lenient with the punishment for Ouni and co., huh? They just take their word for granted and later don't even want to hear Lykos' warning either because of reasons. Not quite the most competent bunch but then they might be thickheaded, old fools I suppose. Doesn't seem like they could've done much to prevent the
attack at the end of the episode.
Speaking of which, that part felt rather undermined by the MC's narration. I think silence would've worked much better.

If you don't mind me asking, what was it that you found to be very bad about Made in Abyss?

To complete the Leijiverse, after Harlock and Yamato watch Galaxy Express 999 and Queen Millenia too. Especially GE999 is as epic as LOTGH.

Watch also Orguss. I consider it better than Macross. In order to complete Robotech, watch Southern Cross and Mospeada too.

My favorite though is Spaceship Sagittarius

Havent watched Captain Future, but it is another classic, based on a Western novel

all 8 Billion for the proper, most competent and complete Berserk adaptation or bust!

Not in a production point of view but some choices or attempts at humor
with Riko being in the nude that (optimistically) goes along the lines of depicting childlike innocence but ends up being something more uncomfortable; the last episode scene goes further than that and it could've done without it.

How many times can rivals race each other in one episode?

So pretty much a completely anime original episode as expected. Though it did show a shot of the captains from Chapter 1 as well as flesh out a fight between the OG Wizard King and some demon that is the very first page of the series.

The original content was mostly just Yuno and Lily clowning on Asta which was alright. I liked that they added some scenes showing about how the Father and kids at the orphanage care about and will miss Asta (and expect him to fail lol). The Asta/Nash section was also solid, wonder if it will be brought back up.

You might have missed it but Asta actually met the fifth most popular character in the series this episode based on the latest character poll.

Hunterpedia Petit Clover
So I guess we will be having these segments to (1) fill up a minute and (2) keep Yuno in the mindshare.

It will probably provide some fun bits so I'm good with it.

What? When she sees Reg's peepee?
I really don't think any of this content is really all that bad, at least not the way it's done in the anime (I still haven't looked at the manga outside of the first chapter.)

Just finished Nana with my wife last night and was disappointed to find out it was one of those situations yet again where the anime ends inconclusively midway through the manga.

Apparently the manga didn't even end either due to the author's health ala Hunter x hunter's author... Where's did Nana O. disappear to dammit?

That scene in the first episode is fine considering it seemed like something that was driven out of plain curiosity but it was a bit awkward. The last episode scene was straight up uncomfortable but yeah, thankfully it was brief.

You could say it's okay to be uncomfortable but if the intention is to try to sound funny, there's better ways to do that. Again, I don't intend to say that it stands out overall but it feels like something worth pointing out for new viewers for what's to come. I still think it's the best show I've seen this year so far.

Honestly liked this episode quite a bit. Almost wish I didn't read the original because the only thing on my mind is that they seem really apprehensive about just adapting it. I'm really curious as to where they intend to stop.

Poor Nash. He probably won't be hearing from that ear anymore.

I guess I'm having trouble understanding since none of it made me comfortable. Kids are curious creatures, and Riku's interest/oblivious curiosity over Reg's privates is, honestly, a bit how some kids are. I never saw it as more than essentially Dragon Ball level humor.

Edit: Just saw your edit. I definitely agree it's the kind of humor you should mention to people though. I might not find it uncomfortable at all, but I am aware others do, just as they did Dragon Ball's stuff.

The anime tones down the visual presentation a bit (thankfully, because I couldn't justify reading the manga), but there's no question that the manga author has a distasteful interest in young children, made clear not just by his propensity to get Riko naked and his obsession with Reg's genitals but also by his interest in putting young girls through physical torture. Taken together, it goes beyond typical shounen pervy humor into the realm of lolicon fantasy. His artistry and creativity in creating a world is admirable, and I really love what the anime did with the material overall, but I can't completely ignore the morally dubious aspects of the story.

I'm a little surprised to be saying this but I'm kind of worried about the production values if we're only on the second episode and the fighting is already this lackluster. Kawamoto and staff should have been working on this show for almost the entire year so I would expect the entire cour to look really high end. This episode hopefully is just an anomaly.

My understanding is that the spell that the outside human casters used on the city basically returned NYC to our world and merged it with the overlapping demon realm to make it stable again. I guess the change happened instantaneously. Otherwise it wouldn't make any sense.

What threw me for a loop was how all those people were acting normal after the merger so I assume that Steven and Klaus had been thrown ahead by a months to a point where things were returning to normal (somewhat) in NYC. The whole thing is confusing because they don't elaborate on it.

As for Klaus, I guess that world had monster humans running around in it before the Great Collapse?

Oh I'm not denying that the author might have a questionable interest in young children, but the way the anime has adjusted things I think removes that for most viewers, especially those who are entirely unfamiliar with the original work or the author himself.

I don't know that I'd agree torturing the characters here, even if they are children, speaks to any kind of perverted interest (and I'm going entirely based off the anime here.) I think that's just part of the harrowing, upsetting atmosphere the entire series' wallows in.

Sweet. I hope I get to see it someday =/ I never even got to see the original one in person.

It's crazy how Kakegurui seemed to blow up outside of Japan, but is barely even a blip there.
It'll all depend on it's success on Netflix for any future adaptations, I guess.
