Do you separate the entertainer from the person?

Milkshake ducks. Milkshake ducks as far as the eye can see....

It's not just about the people on the internet that I watch for entertainment it's pretty much the entire entertainment industry period. Recently I was watching a stream of a YouTube channel I watch and the guy started going on and on about "social justice warriors" and "America too PC" etc etc. You know the spiel. I know where that leads and what kind of person drones on like that.

Anyway, once again I have to decide....do I want to watch someone make content that I enjoy knowing that they're this type of person? Dude's representing YouTube dropping hard Rs and it seems like there's a 50% chance your favorite male actor or director is a piece of shit.

So how do you handle it? If the person making the content or in it is garbage but the content they make is not do you keep watching? I know I purchase the products of tons of different companies and a lot of them probably have dark stories to uncover but it's different when it's a single person. Companies don't have a face.

What say you GAF?

If the artist isn't the focus of the art (i.e an ACTUAL artist who draws) then maybe....

But for the most part, no.

Honestly it just depends on who the person is, there art, and what they've done.

There's no hard rule for me. Movies are a bit difficult to watch when made by a horrible person, but there's a whole cast a crew to support

“America’s too pc”

Lmao. These dudes just wanna be sexist/racist/assholes and not have to worry about the consequences.

Fuck em

I sort of work on the assumption that most people are bad, and am rarely proven wrong, so I try not to let it make a difference for me.

I'll try to avoid giving money directly to the real shitheads though.

No, I do not separate the person from their work. There is enough entertainment around for me not to have to give money and attention to people whose views or actions I find abhorrent.

Depends on context. If we're talking a bit of an egotistical ass who's great artistically in a way I enjoy then yeah I'll probably push past it. If we're talking some scumbag racist or whatever then no way.

I'm open to reconsider for reformers.

Yes. I wouldn't be able to consume anything because eventually you find out everyone is problematic.

I will try to avoid supporting terrible people financially while they are alive. I have no problem consuming their output once they are dead or lose any sort of financial gain from it.

I suppose I dont. I have a hard time enjoying someone's work if I know they're trash.

Don't watch Jontron anymore.
Don't watch Dunkey anymore.
Don't watch H3h3 anymore.
I've only watched one Needledrop video since the Fader stuff. I'm feeling kind of done with him.

I try to avoid them, but in practice it can be really fucking hard, especially if they're the product of multiple people.

Single people are easy to avoid. PewDiePie? Eh, never liked the guy much in the first place. Totalbiscuit? I liked his content, I think he makes some good points sometimes and I acknowledge that he has some good things, but at the same time I think he's an opinionated dick way too often. I hate his stance on Gamergate, how he flames some developers for not meeting his own standards, and the fact that he just can't help stepping on a soapbox to give sermons about ~his views~ on fucking everything. So for him, while I appreciate the good things he's done, I choose to ignore his content because of the stuff I don't like. Also not that hard.

But what about a movie like Leon the Professional? Great movie, with great performances by actors and actresses that I like and respect. And yet I just found out that the director of the movie married and impregnated a 15-year old girl.

What the fuck do you even do in that situation?

Yeah, lots of people are vile but I'm not gonna let that ruin things I enjoy. Like, if Mark Hamill is ever revealed to be a horrible person who has done terrible things to others... I'll still be obsessed with Star Wars.

Depends where their convictions lie.

If they're a straight up nazi like Jontron, then it's impossible to separate the content.

Depends on the person

Phil Fish is a bit of an ass at times, but I can easily look past that and 100% enjoy Fez.

Adrian Chmielarz's constant support of gamergate and shitty political views is a different story. I can't bring myself to play Vanishing of Ethan Carter. The guy is such a shitty person, I would feel bad playing his games.

Yes.

I'm not interested in what kind of person you are, if you're a PoS off the field that's you.

I'm interested in the talent, the performance and that's it.. that's my take on it. Everyone goes about it their own way.

Random Human

They were trying to grab your prize. They work for the mercenary. The masked man.
There is such a vast amount of content out there in every single medium that I have no problem giving something a pass because its creator is a really bad person.

Angry Grimace

Two cannibals are eating a clown. One turns to the other and says "does something taste funny to you?"
You can't watch wrestling if you don't.

Wait a minute, dunkey?

Havnt heard about him, do i want to?

Yes & No. I'm still going to watch Chinatown but I won't defend the director as a person.

I was disappointed the actor who plays Negan wore a blue lives matter shirt

on the other hand, I'm so happy that Mark Hamill is against Trump, so clearly it does matter to me that the artists I admire aren't terrible, at least.

MF DOOM sending fake performers? Eh, I would be salty but he's still the BOAT

Louie CK sexually harassing women by making them watch him touch himself... Louie should be punished in some way but I still find him one of the best stand up comics

Case by case. I do have a line where if crossed, you're dropped. But I haven't had to really test it with artists I truly cared about. I avoid Mel Gibson stuff, but I was never the biggest Mel Gibson fan so it was easy. I came close when Michael Gira of Swans was accused of rape, but that one didn't go anywhere from what I remember.

There's a good interview with Colbert and Seinfeld where they're talking about how much they used to love Cosby, but Colbert found he couldn't enjoy his comedy anymore.

In that case, the crimes he had commited greatly conflicted with the image he had with his comedy. Also, comedy is largely emotional and spontaneous, so even if you can logically seperate the entertainer from the person, it's still entirely possible you'll have a worse experience watching them.

I enjoyed Jontron alot, but I found I was simply repulsed by him after his milkshake duck incident, and I simply couldn't find him as funny anymore.

It all depends upon context of who the person is, what they did, and what their content is. As an example I'll still watch Mel Gibson films like Braveheart and Lethal Weapon because his racist schtick really doesn't change how I view those films. On the flip side I have a hard time watching Bill Cosby's stuff because his sexual assuault/abuse/harrassment stuff contradicts so much with Cosby's stand up and the Cosby's shows morals that it actively ruins them for me.

I'm not gonna go looking for the twitch highlight but he was streaming and decided to call a group of people faggots. A girl then said hey you shouldn't say that. Instead of apologizing for it, he just moved on.

Just doesn't sit right with me.

The thing about art and artist for me is like this:

If the person is Dead as the racist Hegel and the mysogynist Schopenhauer etc.

I dont Care, they have great books and are interesting, and since they are dead they Will not see My money anyway. The message/essence IS not owned by the author.

If the person is alive, then i assume My Pirate persona yarrr.

The same goes for all kinds of arts

It does soften the blow if the artist is dead. If John Lennon's abuse was current I don't know if I could listen to The Beatles. But I can now.

It's becoming harder.

I try to separate characters at least, but when it's like authors/creators, it's really hard to.

Like i say "Hulk Hogan is the greatest american hero to ever live. However, Terry Bollea, the guy who played him, is a complete piece of shit."

There are enough great artists in the world that I don't need to waste time on the shitheads.

That said, there are different levels of problematic. I can watch and enjoy Tom Cruise movies but I stay away from James Woods or Adam Baldwin stuff.

Almost never. Too much amazing art out there to support artists who are awful people morally. Kanye's a bit of an exception, but I'm listening to him less and less as well.

It's easier when I'm not looking directly at the person. I love Galaxy Quest. The last time I tried watching Galaxy Quest, I thought "God, that guy is a piece of shit" every single time I saw him, to the point of distraction.

If the product is themselves, then no. (youtube/twitch streamers)

If they make a product, then it depends. I boycott Mel Gibson still. Someone mentioned Chinatown, great movie, I didn't even know it was Polanski.

EDIT: Ugh I meant no as in I don't support them. Worded weird and I think the meaning may have gotten misconstrued.

I admit that I don’t. I don’t think I’m capable of doing it even if I wanted to.

Although I still listen to MJ so I appear to be full of it.

I mean it's a case by case thing, but mostly yes. I've never abstained from watching something because it was made by someone who did something bad.
