For Some Reason, No One Wants Entry-Level Retail Jobs

Retail is not nearly the hell it is portrayed as (seriously, sloughing off assholes is super easy, and you meet some real characters), but the pay and hours are just shit.

I can confirm this is correct, btw. I work at a JC Penney right now while I hunt for a real job, and they have had a horrible time trying to hire anybody to work weekday days and to get high schoolers to actually show up for their shifts on nights and weekends.

Jobs immigrants could do if they weren't busy being kicked out of the country or forced to work in horrific slave-like conditions so that they aren't caught by the government.

If you think the treatment of immigrants is bad now, imagine what would happen when they deal with the shit people who hate them on a daily basis. They don't deserve that.

Posting from the break room of my retail job. Turnover has never been as bad for seasonal employees as this year. Every single person we've hired for my floor has quit without fail. We're working with a skeleton crew going into the holidays and they're cutting back hours because we're getting $13 an hour now. I'm glad this is getting some attention cus yeah this unfortunately isn't news to me.

$15 minimum wage protest was underpaying based on the nonsense customer service pepole have to deal with. That will pay for itself cuz the workers would be a little happier and not be as bothered by asshole customers. It would make sucking out their will to live more bearable.

I have PTSD from working retail. There are some angry ass moms out there. I wouldn’t recommend working retail to my worst enemy.

With the way my mom is at retailers and if that's a daily basis for workers there, I'll die before working at retail

And she keeps on pushing me to work at retail because they're the only ones who need positions

Godspeed.

Shit pay, shit schedules that you have little control over, in 99% of cases there's no benefits, and you have to deal with shiteating customers (and you'll be lucky to get a manager that sticks up for you even a little). Not to forget all the little ways entry-level retail jobs can sap your will to live, like some employers yelling at you for staying "late" when they know there's no shitting way you're finishing the amount of work you have after store hours 15 minutes after closing. Also inconvenient clock in/out procedures, if you want to take your 30 minute lunch be sure to use the one terminal up front to clock out, oops customers are now trying to ask you for help on your break.

I kinda wonder if part of it is that retail jobs tend to cluster in the nicer parts of town where the local well to do teenagers and young people don’t want to work there.

I think this would force less well to do folks that would work there to have to commute in which makes the job even less appealing.

All conjecture though

If I pulled that off, would you die?
Been working at Target for a year now. I've seen some shit you people wouldn't believe.
Used diapers left in carts, crazy homeless people screaming for their moms.

Can't wait for all the seasonal workers to not show up for their shifts.

One time I worked in a CVS photo lab for $7/hr and a older man came in and asked if I could sell him a stamp, and when I told him we only sold books of 10 stamps he threw a handful of change at me and called me a cocksucker. Then the manager apologized to him!

I dunno. I worked retail at a video game store for three years when I was a kid. It wasn't so bad. Sure you deal with dumb people sometimes, but I would say the people who are all "retail is the worst thing ever" probably just aren't really good at dealing with people.

They blame ride-hailing services and on-demand delivery apps for taking entry-level workers, since they offer (or at least advertise) higher starting pay and opportunities for tips and bonuses

🤔 If only there was a solution to this problem.

I did my time for over 5 years in retail. Working thanksgiving day until midnight, then coming in Black Friday at 7am. I worked every holiday except Christmas.

They want you to sign customers up for reward cards, sell warranty plans, get enough online purchases, sell insoles, and maintain cleanliness of department. There were times I got angry.

I worked in retail. It's definitely not worth they pay you for the amount of work that you do. I was basically a salesman that has to do almost everything that a car salesman has to do from telling the story of our products, to closing the sale and then I was also expected to clean the bathroom like a maid. At least the car salesman gets paid by percentage points of the sale. Companies, even good ones literally demand the world from you.

Got out of there as soon as I can and had the opportunity to. Left after a couple of months. The job is not really suited for anyone other than those that never worked a day in thier life before. With that said, everyone should be required to work in them as a matter of life lesson kind of thing, same with financial planning and cooking.

No, they don't deserve the racism and vitriol, but they do deserve a basic wage (yes, even one as small as the minimum) and being able to work in a place with accountability as opposed to a place where they can be abused by higher ups and threatened with deportation for asking for a day off.

Retail is so shitty I don't even want to go to the stores to shop. I can't imagine working it anymore. I worked at American Eagle for 3 years in college and it's "cool" in college but outside of that not so much.

This news comes as no surprise for the vast majority of people who have ever worked retail. Working retail was probably the shittiest job I have ever had. It would at best be tied with a call center job I once had, but that one at least paid 4 dollars more an hour then my retail job did.

Well, you're wrong.

retail also likes to overly optimize and reduce/add shifts like a a wild rollercoaster. it's impossible to plan anything around a retail job because you could be staring down a 10 shift run or have all of 3 shifts.

I worked construction jobs in the rain and heat rather than work retail. Fuck that.
Shit pay, working with the shittiest people on the planet?
Not to mention that professionally, retail is a springboard to basically nothing better. You'd probably be better off at home watching youtube tutorials and saving the miles on your car.

I stopped going to malls after I got out of retail.

When i worked at a call center one of my buddies there got the job after recovering from having a heart attack while doing roofing. This was Georgia where in the summer it is a 100 with 90% humidity. After 6 months at the call center he was trying to get back into construction

I worked a retail job during High School and College, it paid the bills for those years but once I graduated college I was out of there. Nothing worse than being a cashier, standing in one spot all day, being pressured to cash out customers faster, customers yelling at you if you put the bread in the wrong bag, and the bosses getting mad at you for having to take a bathroom break during a short rush of customers (sorry you can't control it sometimes).

Although working outside as a cart-boy or doing the dairy coolers was slightly relaxing during high school and college, especially during the slow days.

Worked retail for 3 years while in college. It was good because of the flexible hours, but holy hell some of the customers were the absolute worst people to deal with. Never again

The shittiest part was then they expect you to drop everything and wake up at 6 am in the morning for an 8 hour shift once you are scheduled but they have no qualms about telling you to go home at hour 5 because it was slow. Like, if you're gonna ask me to drop everything, at least hold up to your end of the bargain.

TFW you'd rather underpay immigrants than actual give decent wages that everyone (including immigrants) would benefit from.

I worked retail during my high school and college years, I would never do it again. The job itself was easy and fun but dealing with people who would look down on you sucks. Customers getting angry for not saving 5 cents, for having to show their id to buy cigs or receive money from western union, etc. However, the people I worked with were awesome and I learned to never judge people based on their careers. I honestly think everyone should do a retail or fast food job once so you never think you’re superior to that person behind the counter.

Another one of the ex-retail folks. Worked at Blockbuster for $5.15/hr and was actually impressed when I became a shift manager for $6.

I will say for as much of a shithole as retail is (and it is 100% a shithole), you gain an appreciation for what those who work in retail now are going through.
