DF: Shadow of War: Early Xbox One X vs PS4 Pro Graphics Comparison + Frame-Rate test

Well, what does that say about all the games that Sony has a marketing deal with?!
i don't think we should go that route, seriously. It won't lead to anything but speculation.

I think the difference in those games won't be as obvious as in Shadow of War (and Assassin's Creed Origins?). Probably a resolution bump, but the same textures as on PS4 Pro.

You wouldn't have bought it, even if it was 100 euro cheaper and launched at the same time.

Of course not, not with that lineup of software, or better yet the stuff that is lacking. But I would also NOT buy a ps4 Pro X with identical specs for another extra 100 EUR for the same reason as my initial assessment.

But when this happens, is it because they have a marketing deal so they make the X version intentionally worse? And what about the games without marketing deals?

Shadow of War has a 4K Textures and Cinematic Pack on Steam. This is the exception, not the rule.

It's a financial decison. Companies want to make money. Increasing the resolution is cheap, exchanging all textures is expensive.

The content creation pipelines most likely all involve creating textures at higher quality and reducing them in quality to meet performance goals. They aren't really exchanging all textures, but rather not reducing the quality as much for this sku.

The textures already exist for the PC version of the game no?

Companies already target a wide range of different hardware because of PC.

oh, definitely, all i'm saying is $500 is a lot to spend on what amounts to a texture bump for me. if people are ok spending that more power too them. but for $500 i would honestly want to be seeing generational gap-like differences. not just the texture slider moving from high to very high, but that's just me.

I like that we have options now. PC gamers can upgrade whenever they want and spend a lot of cash for res bumps etc also. I always wanted consoles to upgrade more frequently so we arent stuck with old tech for the last 4-5 years of each gen. Plus I can sell my old Xbox One to make the hit softer. In my case i'm spending $300 to upgrade, not $500

Does the press already have an Xbox one X?

Or how can df do these comparisons?

Like he said in the vid. There was a big press event like a month ago i believe where they could play and capture. Thats where they got the Tomb Raider stuff also.

Didn’t the PS5 talk start with this ?

You all are getting excited over more fuel for the fire when there isn’t one, lol.

There is definitely some smoke though. Next gen launching in 2019 is both exciting and concerning. It's exciting because new hardware is always exciting, especially next gen hardware. It's concerning though because high development costs have been causing issues (loot boxes, multiple SKUs, studio closers, shrinking genres, etc.) so I'm not sure a new generation in the next 2 or 3 years is the healthiest thing for the industry.

This thread haha.

So in the last pages it's turned into how much of a beast the PS5 will be and how Xbox has no exclusives, and people wonder why this forum gets so much hate.

To topic now. That upgrade looks fantastic! Those textures make all the difference.

It's finally good to see what this can put out after waiting so long to see it.

Gotta admit, I'm kinda tempted to get one. Will have to look at the XB1X's list of enhanced games first, but I'm warming up to it, even if my XB1S is my least-played system. I just love specialized tech like this.

I was wondering why the hell this topic has so many replies.

The more powerful console has better looking versions of mutiplatform games! Shocking!!!

I haven't picked it up yet, but a few friends are planning on getting it with their X. Looking good.

Glad to see X upgrades, because currently, this game looks like a 360 game on my XBO. I'll be downloading the upgrades right away when my X comes.

Yup, why I upgraded to Pro and if I had an XBO I'd be all over this - although having said that the price is a little high...the gap between XBO and XOX is massive in both price and performance but with just a performance increase over XBO you have to wonder how many will buy it beyond those upgrading? But beyond that I'd say most people who bought XBO in the first couple years and upgraded to XBOs will likely be all over this (moreso than PS4 to Proers IMHO) as the jump is that much bigger.

To be fair, Mordor wasn't exactly a looker in 2014, either. While the sequel does look better especially on the X/Pro, I still don't think it's mind-blowing compared to other titles we've seen.

it especially stands out on the pro though with the higher resolution :\

like you'll be climbing a wall and there's like a sharp texture next to a blurry ass one as if the texture was still streaming in. but that's not the case. you could hang there forever. its just a shit texture. haha

That is quite the difference even between Premium consoles. Hard to argue that the 1X isn't a big enough upgrade from the base XB1 or Ps4 when you look at how much better it looks than even the Ps4 Pro.

I actually don't wonder that at all. Who do you think GAF gets hate from? Gamergaters? Crapgamer? Tim Dog? How do you even know?

Why is there so much controversy over these results? MS made the more powerful iterative unit a year later for 100 dollars more expensive. Thus the difference shows in the software based on how the devs have optimized for said software.

For those of us who dont really care about graphical disparities outside of curiosities sake, of course its not going to matter. But for those who are looking at these comparisons and liking what they are seeing, its absolutely a win for MS. And it is a fact that XB1X in Shadow of War shows a notable improvement over the PS4 versions, just like PS4 and Pro do over the base XB1.

I mean it seems like some people are posting like they are having mental breakdowns over not being able to comprehend MS having the stronger machine on the market

Every forum gets "hate" from everywhere on the internet. Thats how the internet is. Just to focus on some very vocal xbox fans/fanboys and "Gamergaters" is a little bit short minded, don't you think?

Sometimes I understand the reactions outside of this forum as some posts are really "off the charts" or hard to understand correctly if you don't know when a comment was ironic or a joke. After all you have to know your usual suspects before understanding some posts here.

I can only speak for myself here, but my own unease looking at results like these is that X1X will dominate PRO in sales. I didn't think it would initially given the higher price point, but it's hard to argue with these kind of results. While X selling better doesn't mean much to me in and of itself, it could mean something to devs who could then put in even less effort and provide even more wishy-washy support for PRO than they already are.

I don't really have any intention of buying an X atm, and don't want to feel like my $400 investment (which was on top of a $400 investment for the base system) was wasted. I don't want or expect results like this given the disparity in power between the two systems, but I also still want to see devs push the PRO and eke everything they can out of it. Perhaps these are silly concerns tho, Idk.

I do not share your concerns for the PS4 Pro regarding developer support. Best example here is The Witcher 3. PS4 Pro got an update because they made one for the Xbox One X.

My concern is the opposite that due to market share / marketing deals publishers (not the devs) may hold back on the Xbox One X to not piss off Sony. For example just see the farce with Destiny 2 and COD WW2.

Ah, yeah, I could see that happening too. Personally, I don't really want to see either scenario come to pass. To me, ideally, devs would get as much out of both machines as possible, and everyone could feel satisfied with their purchases.

I guess the issue is dividing dev time up for two systems instead of just a blanket patch for all. Sure it would be great for devs to put extra time into the 1X version and really use the system but people would moan.

Depends what your lead development platform is. But even then ... lets see

a) PC: Should be no issue at all to scale slightly down to Xbox One X and then PS4 Pro
b) PS4: You have to do a Xbox port anyway, so the idea is to port to Xbox One X first and then scale down to Xbox One (S)
c) Xbox One (X): No brainer
d) Nintendo Switch: *joke*

Hopefully if it's PC then 1X should be same assets, just notched down slightly. I guess we will see at launch what happens but I do wonder about some slightly older titles.

Yep, that's the problem, potentially. I wouldn't moan about an X version being better tho. After all, if the roles were reversed and PRO was the powerhouse, I know I'd want devs to get as much out of it as possible instead of scaling things down for the sake of the X.
