Digital Foundry: GT Sport vs Forza 7

They had a quantity over quality thing going on. The fact that GT boss is so snooty about GT upsets me. Like this is an artistic creative Industry but there is no excuse for drive club and GT not sharing the same assets. That's how Forza gets a lot done. Two teams making different games, using the same assets. We need a GT spin-off done by a different team to speed Dev up because the difference in graphics between GT:S and Forza 7 is not worth the 4 year wait.

This really shouldn't "upset" you.

Kaz has mentioned before that Gran Turismo will always have every thing done in house. It's the very reason Gran Turismo wins this face-off in terms of materials, shaders, lighting, and car models. The fine details are retained by keeping every thing close to the chest.

Yeah. The good thing about that is that everything is at the highest quality a Dev can make.

The bad thing is they could never get Forza's number of cars and tracks in time.

Let another team make assets for them then. Like they can set the standard, make the blueprint and have some other team building off that. I'm tired of waiting a whole generation for these games.

Forza 7 looks slightly better, but maybe it's because the few sections that look jawdropping were XBX footage. It just looks more appealing due to the chase cam being dynamic, unlike GTS.

Off topic: what's the single player like in PC:2? I refuse to deal with the windows store so F7 is out of the running.

Very good.

You'd be best off asking in the OT for a more in depth answer.

Having said that it would have been really interesting if they could have included PCars 2 in this comparison.

True. But then the video did feature some wet road racing in GT at the end.

And it also showed wet/rain with Forza?

HDR implementation throughout the whole game(s) vs a limited number of wet weather tracks in Forza (next to nothing in GT)? So yeah, HDR is a glaring omission...

While I think Forza 7 looks really good, I can't help but liking more GT artistic and technical choices. Considering how much I enjoyed replays in past GT games, seems GT is the game for me, If I ever get it, since I don't like it's new MP focus.

this video really shows what is wrong with modern gaming.
who cares how detailed the headlights of a car are.
you never see them when you race and if you do, they are far away
and what makes it even funnier is that the models in the menu/replay sometimes look better then actual gameplay.
is the damn game fun to play ?

Made no mention of Forza's weather. Can't believe that was missed - it's a huge plus over GTS. Both games look great, has to be said.

what i care for is if the game is fun.

You're in a digital foundry thread. What did you expect?

It'd be like bringing a knife to a gun fight.

PC2 is fully dynamic, something neither GTS or FM7 is, so it will never look as good, at least on console.

Considering the PC version of Forza is being shown it wouldn't have hurt to get some PC footage of Project Cars 2 in the mix.

Incredible how much detail PD puts into there cars. I'd never notice most of it. Great video, interesting to see how two teams approach development. Love the opening music!

This is what DF do and its interesting to see small details like this.

This is such a strange comparison to see DF make as both developers have completely different approaches. It's like if DF compared COD to BF.

Actually, this is almost entirely irrelevant to this thread.

This is such a strange comparison to see DF make as both developers have completely different approaches. It's like if DF compared COD to BF.

If anything.. it makes it a better, more interesting comparison. They're both aiming to make realistic looking 60fps driving simulators, so seeing the two different approaches is cool.

The difference is that these games are trying to simulate many of the same things on the same tracks with common vehicles. It’s interesting to compare.

4K Comparison Images
First shot: Details in GTS are nice, but that ugly reflection...

Second shot: Details are nice in GTS, but the car logo looks ugly in both games(maybe slightly better logo in Forza)

Third shot: What's wrong with that tire wall in GTS?

Fourth shot: Why is there no grass in GTS on the right side?

Both games have some good and awful looking spots.

GT wins my heart.

And kudos to DF and dark10x. I don't know anyone else in the industry doing this kind of work at this level of detail. Keep it up guys.

Are the games really that different, particularly when it's DF talking about things DF talks about?

Comparing CoD to BF isn't that strange if the comparison is what the gun models look like.

I do prefer the gameplay visuals of FM7, but I think that's mostly down to camera differences (better sense of speed), changing TOD/dynamic skyboxes, and weather options.

This comparison does make one wonder what happened to PCars 2 on consoles. It looks awful on Xbox One at least.

Really disappointed in Digital Foundry for not including Project CARS 2 in this comparison. Why do they fail to recognize it on equal footing as Forza and GT?

While the lighting in GT Sport looks more natural, I prefer the final product in Forza 7 and PC2 owing to TOD changes during races and the wealth of content, especially when you consider Polyphony Digital has long development cycles compared to its competitors. Curiously, if PD has a more technically advanced lighting system, why is the weather restricted before the race? These aspects just make the driving experience much more realistic in Forza 7 and Project CARS 2, gameplay wise and visually.

Only one of them has lootboxes and is a shameless cash grab.. I'm talking about Forza.
You can't even spend real money on lootboxes in Forza (at this point). I've spent tons of time in FM7 and have bought one, with ingame currency. They are totally unnecessary.

Thank you for the video and detailed write up. With that said, why didn’t you speak on AA implementation?

Bolded. That is precisely what the video is about.
You act like the video is pitching them against each other.

Edit. I do wonder if 'Vs' is the correct terminology for a video like this. you know how folk just love a conflict.
