Moderators: the new ban on social and political discourse

Seeking clarification - does this ban include discussion of games, movies, tv shows and books that tackle social or political subjects?

To clarify: it's to ensure the sexual assault allegations don't get discussed and any threads on the subject locked. I doubt much thought has been given beyond that.

It hasn't been well thought out obviously because just with games the discussions are political. Once it expands to other OT it will be impossible. It's a horrible policy.

i'd imagine it would be okay if the thread was tackling such issues. bringing those issues into threads that have nothing to do with them is the problem.

There is a thread where it is being discussed to death. I wish people would go there and quit with the attention seeking burner account suicides no one believesyour faux outrage.

Not a mod, but I'd assume that talking about the former (in the context of the game or it's media) would be fine, while the latter (movies, tv, books) would not due to the switch to the forum being game focused (now, that line may blur with games based on said media, but take it as more of a case-by-case basis). Just my two cents.

OT is going to be reopened in a few weeks, just no straight political gaf.

I think they'll put the non-gaming forum up when people have calmed down. Obviously people are "venting" where they can atm (gaming) where it isn't really appropriate.

If they attempt to stick to a ban on social and political issues, it'll never come back. Even if they managed to enforce the unenforceable out of the desire to protect the site's owner, it would be a lobotomized version of the old forums.

Fuck zombie GAF.

If Evilore had handled this situation maturely, I would be willing to give him another chance. Anyway, judging from all the “fuck the people leaving the site” comments, it looks like the reminants of this site will be the circle jerkiness and groupthink that were always the worst part of gaf, but now amplified. I don’t think I’ll be getting anything more out of this community.

Ban this junior member.

lmfao if he just was at all apologetic about his screw up instead of pushing the blame onto the girl then this place could have easily survived.

For the sane people left here, keep an eye out the ResetEra site; a new gaf created from some of the old mods. It should be going up this week.

Gonna throw my 2 pennies in....

No more Trump threads.

No more LGBTQ rights threads.

No more threads about Colin Kaepernick.

No more PoliGAF(didn't participate, just read, but those were some knowledgeable dudes. Hate to lose that over some BS)

No more GamerGate threads.

No more Black man shot and killed by cops threads.

No more dirty cop threads(See Baltimore PD recent indictments of officers)

Basically OT will now be Sports, Movies, TV and Music.

This sucks this is the primary place I get my gaming news.

I doubt there will be many credible people remaining to post news after all this, it will mainly be people reposting what shows up in other places online from now on. Not many people with much of an online presence or reputation will want anything to do with Neogaf from now on.

Says the Junior? I'm seeing plenty of well respected and visible members of the forums going down in these, and more juniors suddenly defending this nonsense. HMM

They should've made some kind of separated "POLITICS" and "POLITICS IN GAMING" containment boards, and that's it.

I was under the assumption that "we" as a community used to stand for the exact opposite.

"Bu-bu-but keep politics out of muh videogames!!" Is something for the alt right and alt right defending "both sides" crowd. Is GAF going to be flooded with those types now?

The problem with OT was never the topic. It was that it became one-sided to an absurd extreme over time. NeoGAF is that type of discourse. It’s important and you can’t take it away. But perhaps this time it will be done in such a way that at least allows good people to have a discussion on the merits of various social positions.

You seem to be really bothered by this, you're telling everyone in every thread to stop doing it.

And the fact that you're calling it "faux outrage" makes it quite transparent where you stand here.

PoliGAF had devolved into complete madness and was suspecting everyone of being a Russian shill. One thing I won't miss is PoliGAF, easily one of the most toxic threads in the forum.

Ya I've been seeing a lot of juniors too. It's kind of unsettling. Lol

Sounds like a massive improvement to the forums in my opinion, especially with regards to the Trump threads. Why there wasn't one dedicated OT to him instead of lots and lots of threads spammed over and over every time he said something was beyond me.
I feel like GAF wasn't really ever able to properly discuss any of these topics as it was, and so it just wound up making the overall forum a lot worse. Not to say that discussion of politics was inherently a bad thing. Just moreso GAF's handling of said topics and issues. The community didn't allow for any real discussion and the politics wound up creating an uncomfortable extreme form of bias.

Ironic isnt it? People complaining about a supposed sexual assault end up harassing a whole community. Attention seekers and bullies. Sonetimes you arent much diferrent than what you fight.

Red Scare #2017Version? Ill be honest PoliGAF was huge threads, so I didnt see that sort of thing. All I ever saw when I browsed that thread was discussion about politics. And believe it or not it was the one political thread I could go to and not see it being all about Trump.

Complaining about sexual assault is the same as sexual assault.

This is peak "both sides"

Yoooo wtf is going on here man? Off topic is gone. Threads talking random shit about mods. Taliing about feels and humans rights and shiee. More importantly....OFF TOPIC IS GONE!

BREHS! I actually got some work done yesterday but still; what's happened? Mods forgot to pay the bills?

I have no clue why Trump didnt have his own section. I think it would have been for the best. It would have kept people out of the discussion that didnt wanna be in it. Seeing 5 Trump threads a day can trigger folks to start trolling.

Talking about racism is as bad as the racism itself, and this is why we need forward thinking policies such as no political discussion whatsoever.

Is it not possible that we can have a sub-forum dedicated to politics that is separated out from Off-Topic?

Because the individual things he says are newsworthy. The President of the United States is a white supremacist and sexual assaulter. This presidency is a history-defining moment.

By GAF's own rules, it is "new threads for new news."

Based on your logic, you think that Trump's recent comments to a widow should be in the same thread as Trump's comments on NFL players.

They absolutely should not. They are different news stories.

And just so you know, mods DID lock threads that were redundant about Trump. But they also realized that many things he says and does ARE big singular stories.

I understand it's hard to look at. But that is our reality for at least another three years and you can't just pretend it's not happening.

LGBT and other diversity-focused rights aren't political topics. They're basic human decency topics.

I agree.

As to why there were multiple Trump threads, the rule was "new news, new thread" and Trump, being the US President, and this being a forum with heavy traffic from the US, is unfortunately an important person.

So basically you are saying let OT be OT but just create a heavily moderated Trump OT for people that wanna talk about him? I think that could work out well.

It decongests OT and still allows for politics being talked about without it being shoved down everyone's throat.

He's the president of the United States, and the majority of users are from English speaking countries. Like it or not, most everything the US government does effects all of our lives.

The GAF rule was always new threads for new news, because it's easy for updates to get lost in 300 page OTs, and you'll have entire pages of posters replying with outdated information. The president also effects a disproportionate amount of topics; from immigration to local elections to policing to international conflict to the environment to sports to lgbt rights to women's rights to minority rights to taxes to space exploration.

It would be, frankly, asinine to attempt to discuss all of those subjects simultaneously in one thread, along with every major crises that a president must address that gets thousands of replies.

People who don't want to be in a discussion can just... ignore a thread. "Triggered to trolling" means what, you can't help but shitpost news that effects your confirmation bias?
