KS7000 is a great TV... when you get a decent unit. Many of them had problems with horrible clouding/banding and the TV was somewhat glued and people reported that in some cases the plastic/aluminum elements came off. Not a solid build machine by any means.
Yeah I was really really close to going with the 65KS7000 (65KS8000) @ £1150 because the brightness/nits are amazing and it was 65" but having considered your comments and the fact its been a discontinued set for a while made me think the chance of getting a good one (maybe the only ones available are returns?) would be pretty slim, so I ended up going for the 55XE900 (55X900e).
The hdr on the 7000 is kinda poor. The screen isnt bright enough and the black levels on the 900e are noticeably better in hdr. I only use hdr if a game is made for hdr, then poorly converted to sdr though those examples are few. Wipeout omega on ps4 being one.
Yeah the more I looked at the MU7000 (MU8000) and started to look at the brightness/nits and not the price lol, I started to accept that it wasn't quite as bright as the XE900 (X900e) AND its blacks weren't going to be as good, so I chose the 55XE900 and bought it (£999) and set it up last night.
Thanks to all who've posted - it was a great help
Initial impressions are good and I'm pleased with what it is.
Blacks are good and the HDR is good albeit subtle and not mind blowing. Bear in mind, the TV is smaller to what I'm used to as the 65" PJ size was a very good picture already.
Having said that, the TV produces a cleaner image/better contrast on most of my 1080p games so you can definitely appreciate using a TV instead of a PJ.
Once I eventually got the Ps4 Pro to display HDR (RGB) & 4k & 60fps altogether (had to change the HDMI inputs of 2 & 3 to advanced), I got to sample games that were both 4k & HDR (including CB4K or some just with resolution boosts).
From varying degrees of quality, the images look cleaner, have more depth and the colours are much better. Different games perform different to others. The colours on HZD are really nice but on GOW are absolutely unbelievable! Shadow Of The Colossus is beautiful but it was on my PJ too!
I'd like to point out that although this is a 4K TV, I'll still play GOW and Shadow Of The Colossus in Performance Mode (@>60fps) even though they are in 4K/CB because IMO there isn't practically any difference in IQ but the frames increase is a massive difference.
BF1 looks much cleaner now. FO4 has a better 3D'ness and not as flat looking. The Nathan Drake Collection (UC2) albeit an older game with no resolution boost, now looks cleaner whereas Bloodborne for example has no noticeable improvements which is still good because its a 1080p game on a 4k screen so I'm thankful it doesn't look worse. Deadnation looks a bit sharper whereas Alienation looks a bit jaggier in places but this game was poor in resolution terms on my PJ too (tut tut Housemark). Pretty much most of the 1080p games I tested looked as good as they did before or slightly better
but I haven't touched the standard game settings at all yet so maybe this will help yield better results.
I can imagine a TV with a better scaler being even more impressive
One thing I have noticed and noticed mainly on Little Nightmares, is a cloud/light bleed going all along around the 2 side edges and bottom. I was surprised at this because it isn't an edge lit TV? Maybe it has something to do with the settings because the Black level is set at the default 50 but when I turned it down to 30, this eliminated all this light bleed. However where as on this game that was ok, that woukd obviously affect all the other games I was happy with so perhaps I need to have a good look at the settings in detail.
Any impressions/info on settings from anyone would be appreciated.
No obvious clouding other than edges mentioned above or DSE so that is really pleasing.
Moving onto the TV scaling standard def stuff is where I was a little disappointed. Obviously, standard shows put onto a 4k and having to be upscaled is never going to be easy to get great results but they were a bit worse than what I had hoped (looking to put this into my Living Room in 3 years). Even full HD shows or Football in HD only looked good to ok (for example, football on Sky Now through my Ps4 looked better than what was broadcast by the BBC & ITV on the HD Channels. Again, these are only HD and not UHD and I couldn't find any UHD via BBC or ITV and I don't think iPlayer is supporting UHD on this model of TV.
Having said all that, I have bought this TV primarily for gaming so I'm not too disappointed but I'd imagine a TV with a better scaler is out there (possibly the XF900/X900F or the XE930/X930E in terms of a newer model of this XE900/X900E, as well as other brands/more expensive sets).
Not checked older consoles yet and I'm not sure how good a Switch will look on here when I look to buy one in the future (maybe need TV with better scaler?) but I'll get a good idea when I check my WiiU later on it (I'm not saying the Switch is equivalent to a WiiU or is an old console in case I am attacked by anyone!).
Also not checked out any 720p or 1080p Films yet but it will be unlikely I'll be getting any UHD Films (not an expense I think matters as much as sound quality or the actual film quality itself).
So still plenty of things to sort with this TV but my initial impressions are very good and although a £1000 is a lot of money, I'm quite pleased with my purchase - something I don't say often lol!
