Germany used to be a champion of open borders in Europe. Not anymore.

https://www.vox.com/world/2018/7/3/17530946/germany-immigration-angela-merkel-migration

Under pressure from conservatives, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has agreed to cut down migration to the country.

To prevent her government from collapsing, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has just agreed on a compromise that will make it harder for migrants to enter the country.

It’s a particularly strange move for Merkel, who has been a strong advocate for open borders since the onset of the European migrant crisis in 2015. But given that Merkel’s leadership was very literally at stake, she agreed to tighten the German border to save her fragile coalition.

Borders are a system of control. It's a shame that people don't understand that freedom of movement or open borders is asking for trouble politically, economically, and so on.

Their citizens have been going apeshit.

If Merkel is willing to compromise with her countrymen, that sounds like Democracy at work. Open borders was -- at best -- wishful thinking. We have enough years of it and hard data to indicate that it is a bad idea and produces negative social results for the countries that do it and for the immigrants who decide to utilize it. Bad all around. Finding a better system is smart.

Hopefully it’s too little too late. Merkel has to go. This so-called crisis is largely her fault and I still don’t understand her motives.

Open borders is a terrible idea. Controlled immigration is the only sensible way to do immigration.

That's the thing - EU never actually had open borders. Internal borders were open as you could travel within EU freely but external Schengen border was heavily guarded so immigration was fully controlled until last crisis.

Then I have to imagine that when the EU was formed all the countries expected Schengen to be about EU residents moving between countries, not migrants and refugees. It seems that Schengen borders were abused if not the letter of the law the spirit of it. Did all the EU countries when they agreed to this imagine one day millions of migrants and refugees from the ME and Africa would be using the principal of Schengen to move around to every country in the EU?

Most likely
When we joined we had to make sure we comply with whole set of very strict rules and standards before we were allowed to be part of Schengen zone and our borders were opened.

Says who? Your gut feelings? Bullshit.
Couldn’t the same thing be said about your post?
Here is a hip check for you. The opposition to open borders has been vocal for years and we’ve been told by their supporters there is no credence to anti-immigration.

Now there is official back peddling happen across the entire EU and now in germany by the ice princess herself.

Right or wrong, the look isn’t good.

Open borders can work. Between Austria and Germany for example. However, for that to work the ousite borders have to be good, which they aren’t. Hence the decision to tighten borders again. Austria ia doing it too.

No. Never. IIRC Schengen was introduced in 1992, when Libyia was a semi-stable country, no war in Syria, no GPS to navigate the balkan route etc.

LOL
The two parties responsible for the 2015 madness (Merkel's CDU + SPD) both recorded their worst election result in 2017. Meanwhile the anti-immigrant AfD has gone from 3% to 15%. Moreover, all recent polls have shown that the German people prefer border security oder Merkel's bullshit.

Well at least the article said conservatives. You would expect them to say right-wing or far right wing.
if you want to put the cdu in the right wing corner Hillary would be almost at Nazi level. The reason why the afd has grown so much is because we had no real Konservative party anymore

wow, iam quite shocked to see so many people being against merkel.

the idea of open borders ist cool, the problem is/was migrants being crimininal and abusing the system.
oh and most eastern european countries not working with the rest of EU.

my only problem was that there was never a proper border control, instead we had migrants just roaming around and registering at different places with several identities.

my biggest offender is how the US, the biggest and most former migrant country is judging about this.

have a look at australia, a country mostly made out of criminals. they made it(after 100 years) and now are criminalizing asians and other migrants.

whats the problem of helping out?

It did and does work on between the EU i

It does work between countries that have signed the Schengen treaty.
Non EU countries Norway and the Switzerland are also part of Schengen, while EU members Bulgaria and Romania aren't.

But Schengen =!= open borders, simply because the Schengen area is (supposed to be) closed off by borders on the outside.
Long story short: Schengen only works because of borders.

You mean people who live there don't want to lose their jobs and way of life so on with wave of cheap labor provided by those asians ?

The hell are you on about?

One paragraph you say open borders are great, the next you say your issue is there was no border control.

And what is this nonsense about us criminalising Asians?

Lol she is just trying to save her own arse. She doesn’t really want to do this otherwise she wouldn’t have in the first place. Typical gutless politicians who cause major problems and then pretend they are the ones to provide the solution. She should step aside ‘gracefully’.

The original plan was never to be multicultural. It was to be multiracial in a European values society which would be great and what I personally believe is the way forward. When the (mainly) Muslims didn’t play ball, they had to invent the term ‘multicultural’ and pretend it was a good thing. Well it isn’t, it’s just balkanisation of once unified and great countries. And the beginning of the end for them.

But there never was a real plan. For this to ever work you would first have to put European (or American) values on a pedestal and make sure they stay there. Then have a clear and profound integration program where it’s clear what is required and desired of immigrants. Not having it be fine to essentially create new colonies of Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey within other countries. Large numbers of immigrants have no intention of ever being real Europeans, this is suicide for the host nations. Some native peoples homes, villages and towns have already become unrecognisable and are no longer European in nature. Of course it’s mainly the lower class people who have had to put up with it and this is where the ‘white flight’ comes from. It also sucks hard for the immigrants who DO want to be Europeans but find their new country is becoming the same as the one they left.

The damage is already done and it’s EU globalists / fanatics who have caused it. Not upholding the nations values because they want to destroy them and make a single EU state, with no care for the damage caused to get there. In 50+ years time the real effects of this will be seen for everyone and it won’t be pretty.

Yeah this will have long term issues that look right now really scary.

Germany has 30% migrants which on paper is not a problem. The problem however is that many of these have way different cultural norms and morals. Right now for example we have in many schools already 80% migrant children. Islam becomes a huge issue already on the school yards with people telling women what they should wear. Jewish children getting bullied and even death threats etc. Now if we assume that most Muslims rather go for a wider amount of chlidren this problem becomes even bigger since we already know that children who were born here already way more radical than her parents. Think 2 Generations ahead and it will look really dim when we have Islamic political groups arguing for the Sharia etc.

What Germany needs to do is close EVERY Mosque that is being financed outside of Europe. It needs to build mosques and only use employess which were educated in Europe. If we let these countries do as they please right now. there wlll be problems.

The 'we can manage' policy and the EU's failure to get a grip will have long lasting an far reaching effects for years to come. We se the Swedish Democrats doing well in the polls, the league in Italy has taken the lead and is already in government, the AfD will continue to push the CSU in Bavaria etc etc etc.

Yep. EU started to act at the very last moment, when a lot of damage was already done. President of the European Council, Donald Tusk, convinced a lot of leaders to change their stance purely with the argument that the current measures against migration might seem harsh, but if they don't do something now then who comes next will be a lot worse

The problem to me is open borders when conceived was meant to be between EU citizens. That was the concept a Frenchmen could go to Germany. A German could go to Italy. This would open up competition and job markets across the EU.

What happened though is that this made up migrant crisis lead to refugee's and migrants coming to the EU and every EU country expected to open its borders and take whoever shows up. Thats not what they signed up for. If you sold open borders on letting everyone from the ME and North Africa into your country the idea would of died. It was sold on EU citizens brining their skill across Europe.

Agree, but it's a little more complicated than that.
Germany, Austria, Holland, Sweden etc. are the "pull factor" countries in the EU that give the most money to refugees but don't share a border or body of sea with any non-EU country.
Then you have the Southern and Eastern EU countries that don't offer a ton of benefits because they are very close to non EU states.

By EU law (the so called Dublin rules) a refugee must register and stay in the EU country where he first arrives. That was the first time Merkel & Germany screwed the rest of the EU, because not a single Asylum seeker in the world can arrive in Germany without passing thru another EU country.

Soon Italy, Hungary and others started to let the Asylum seekers travel north without doing proper registrations and they ended up in Sweden & Germany for the most part (because this whole deal was never about Asylum, it's about getting as much welfare as possible).
This went on and on and on and nobody did anything because the numbers were small. In 2015 the whole just blew up and Merkel screwed over all of Europe again by playing Mother Theresa despite (self proclaimed) refugee numbers in the millions.

Three years later, Merkel finally moved (a little). But the root of all evil are the high payments in Germany, Sweden etc. that lure migrants on these boats. The moment Germany removes those pull factors, the refugee crisis would be over. Italy, Greece etc. would get to live in peace again.

It's very important to point out that only a tiny fraction of people crossing over are actual refugees, most of them just want a better life. That's totally understandable and all, but not the problem of the European tax payers.

Essentially a fake crisis.

What happened in Syria and Iraq is bad, wars are never good but this isn't the holocaust or even Rwanda. But it seems like EU leaders, especially Merkel wanted to pretend it was so the doors were flung open to anyone.

So of course young men of military age are fleeing for the $$$ because even being on poor and on welfare in Europe is better than living where they come from. Which IMO exasperates the problem even further. They have taken away a reason for these young men to stay in their country and fight for it and rebuild it. They have also taken the pressure off of the countries in that area and the countries that share some of the blame. Since Russia/Iran are supporting Assad and keeping him going they should be taking in the bulk of the refugees. If Refugees couldn't flee to Europe than countries in that area would have to shit or get off the pot in regards to Assad and Syria and do something about it regardless if its destroying the Rebels or destroying Assad.

Exactly.
The civil war in Syria started in 2011, yet only in certain regions. Large parts of Syria, like Damascus for example, are just as safe as any other country in that region. When the war began millions of Syrians feld to Jordan and Turkey, where people were provided shelter & food but not a lot more.

Some of them had money and/or knew people in Europe, so the smuggling routes to Germany (from Turkey to Greece, the Balkan region and Austria) were established. The ones who succeded told their folks back home and Merkel's government did nothing to stop it, when numbers were still managable.

The numbers grew exponentially over time and once word spread that Germany (or Sweden) doesn't check for documents and is very generous, scammers from Morocco, Tunisia or Pakistan were able to just show up in Germany and say "Hi, I'm Ali from Syria". Merkel did nothing to stop it, it was Hungary that closed down the Balkan route, because they were sick and tired of the refugee hordes crossing thru.

Now don't get me wrong. A lot of these refugees are good people that are just doing what's best for their families. Let's say you make 50.000€ a year and live in a 2 bedroom apt. Now someone tells you about a country where you can get 200.000€ in welfare payments and will be provided a 4 bedroom mansion. All you have to do is come up with 100.000€ in cash and someone will get you over there. Wouldn't you do it?
Of course you would.

For some reason Merkel and her cronies don't get that these pull factors are the main issue. Mind boggling.

true that, but it was destined to fail looking at that.
poland, bulgaria, romania, hungary are providing cheap labour in germany. a lot of germany were complaining before the refugee crisis about cheap black market workers(in hamburg, there was a place where you can rent bulgarian workers for 3€/h for construction site work or similar stuff in 2010, i lived nearby until the police tried to take this down)

now the migrants from syria/africa are taking over in those kind of things.

people are thinking a bit too short: we in europe truly tried to hold up human rights. countries like hungary and poland started to shut off their countries because they did not like these ideas.
other countries such as estonia simply drove off everyone not-european.

It was obvious that it would to happen. The german gov (CDU, neoliberal center right wing) acts like they were for open borders, one world, one people. But in reality they just wanted to import as many people as needed to fix the demographic decline in western / northern european nations, especially germany. After they let in 2 million refugees they now want to close the borders again. The gov are basically "fake" sjws. They dont care about poor people from the 3rd world. They just saw the cheap labor and sold it to the public as humanitarianism. With the media focusing on islam and migration problems, violence etc they turned the public against migration to be able to shut down the borders again. They did the same media manipulation in the beginning of the migrant crisis to be able to let in just as much as they needed to fill the demographic gap.

they WANTED these people to come here because we had 2-3 generations with shrinking birthrates and huge demographic decline. they just want a certain number of migrants (around 2-3 million) though to fill that gap. you will see soon that they gonna close the borders and shut down welfare for migrants because the demographic gap has now been filled. they dont want more. thats why you suddenly see a change in media in the last couple of months. you dont see any #refugeeswelcome articles anymore. quite the opposite.

the german gov never was sjw. they just acted like they were to import just as much cheap labor as needed

I agree. The Syrian Refugee crisis was a perfect story to sell to the media. It is/was obvisouly overblown and especially in Germany where Holocaust sentimentality could be played up. I feel for Syrians caught in the war, but it wasn't equal to the holocaust or even something like Rwanda but the media played it up that if refugees weren't taken in en masse it would be a repeat of 1940's. I mean there are about 500 000 dead Syrians which is tragic, but thats over 7 years. Meanwhile 6 Million Jews were killed during the holocaust, and that is not taking into account the gypsies, disabled, POW's, or anyone else the Nazi's decided to exterminate. So even though what is happening in Syria is a tragedy it doesn't compare at all and it was total hyperbole to try and make the two situations equal to guilt the German (and EU/American/Canadian/etc...) public into thinking that the doors have to be open. If Europe didn't open its borders its not like there would be mass graves in Syria. Either they would stay in other ME countries or actually fight for their country.

Meanwhile as Europe is being wrecked with a fake refugee crisis that has torn it apart and put unbelievable strain, allowing the right and far right to gain more and more popularity, Russia and Iran are sitting pretty. The two countries that are stoking the flames in Syria and allowing Assad to bomb his people out of his country are taking no refugees and convinetnly allowing them to flee into Europe. If Russia and Iran want to keep Assad around so he can barrel bomb and gas his own people than take in the refugees that their support is causing.

this is one point i was thinking about. if you remember it back then, merkel was never keen to let in the refugees prior to 2015. there was this "pet a refugee kid"-thing, which was very weird and... not human how she did it.
first germany tried to be "a humanitarian helper" but if you look at german people... as konrad adenauer said it: the germans are a very stupid bunch of people(after the allies defeated nazi-germany). i want to help migrants, but on the same term, i dislike the fact, that there are people disrespecting germans, its culture and rights. while i was helping in 2015/2016, there were migrants really making jokes and were in awe, when they heard that jews are still existing in germany or that a woman is the highest politician in germany. they were joking and making fun of that, and this is not ok. hearing even some of them joking that islam will take over in a few years is also something i disliked. i told everyone we respect everyone. religion, or your orientation or skin colour is not what matters, it is the respect everyone is directing towards other people. unfortunately (ethnic) german people have to learn that too.

iam not sure, if the refugee crisis has put some strain onto everyone in europe.
we made some points clear: if you are part of the EU, you need to help out. there are countries only getting money and if there is "help/work" needed, they simply shut off.
if i look around in germany, everyone is now "more wealthy" than 5 years ago. everyone in the neighbourhood now has a bmw/mercedes, and i simply ask myself... how did everyone become this rich with such a short amount of time or am i making things up? every city is builing new streets, autobahn is getting renewed in tons of areas, there are so many construction sites and i wonder where all this money comes from.
i think we have more migrants from africa than from the ME. syria is only a small drip in the ocean. and all those migrants are doing the bad jobs.
drivers, construction site-workers, cleaners... noone is actually getting a proper job. i know some syrians from the crisis who got a doctors licence to work here. some got proper jobs as coders in some companies but i cant talk about it in a objective POV.

if i look around in germany, everyone is now "more wealthy" than 5 years ago. everyone in the neighbourhood now has a bmw/mercedes, and i simply ask myself... how did everyone become this rich with such a short amount of time or am i making things up? every city is builing new streets, autobahn is getting renewed in tons of areas, there are so many construction sites and i wonder where all this money comes from.
i think we have more migrants from africa than from the ME. syria is only a small drip in the ocean. and all those migrants are doing the bad jobs.
drivers, construction site-workers, cleaners... noone is actually getting a proper job. i know some syrians from the crisis who got a doctors licence to work here. some got proper jobs as coders in some companies but i cant talk about it in a objective POV.

I think the strain it put on Europe is not so much financial, but it has taken the cracks in the EU and split them wide open. Its also allowed the far right to gain more and more popularity across Europe. The far right has an easy rallying call that even centrist and leftist find attractive. Brexit probably doesn't happen with out the migrant crisis. You have EU countries arguing amongst themselves and wanting to close borders. Its almost as if Russia and Iran wanted all those refugees to leave Syria and make their way into the EU to sow discord ....

The problem and another poster pointed it out was Merkel opened the doors so now anyone from the ME or North Africa can just say I lost my papers but I am from Syria and they have to be let in, and then once in they are free to go to any EU country due to Schengen borders.

Yeah... only took losing the UK, giving trump free pr and half of Europe being borderline forced to vote center right parties just so they have a CHANCE of being allowed to have border security and control who comes into their own damn home countries. "Good job" Merkel.. not like people have predicted this and similar scenarios 3 years ago already and warned.
Gee i wonder if all the media/goverment pr departments and all these experts who got it wrong will be fired... actually no i dont wonder.

of course they get that.

they WANTED these people to come here because we had 2-3 generations with shrinking birthrates and huge demographic decline. they just want a certain number of migrants (around 2-3 million) though to fill that gap. you will see soon that they gonna close the borders and shut down welfare for migrants because the demographic gap has now been filled. they dont want more. thats why you suddenly see a change in media in the last couple of months. you dont see any #refugeeswelcome articles anymore. quite the opposite.

the german gov never was sjw. they just acted like they were to import just as much cheap labor as needed

a) If the plan was to get as many migrants as possible into Germany.... I don't buy it.
There's still plenty of unemployed people all over the EU that can start working here like tomorrow.
Moreover, I bet that millions of qualified Vietnamese, Russian or Indian workers would come here asap, if they had the chance (Einwanderungsgesetz).
Allowing such a front loaded, unveted horde of people into the country on a temporary status doesn't really do anything. They aren't citizens, many can't work and the trouble/cost is much bigger than the tax payments these people generate.
But hey, if that really was the plan, it was the dumbest fucking plan in German history.

b) They are doing jack shit. Even Seehofer's new plans are tiny little baby steps. The German Asylum laws need to either be abolished or we need to close down the border "Orban style". As long as we have open borders + a welfare state, none of the stuff they do will matter.
