PS5 Pro devkits arrive at third-party studios, Sony expects Pro specs to leak

I respect Tom Henderson's insight too. But my understanding was that he also anticipated 3 months ago, based on PS's own internal view. That leaks from other parties would be happening within that same month. Yet here we are...

He didn't anticipate anything, he just reported that Sony expected leaks by the end of 2023. Tom is very careful with his words when reporting, and I mean that in a good way.

Then we wait a little bit longer, it's not a matter of life and death...

Nobody bet their houses on a specific leak date....

Again, you can't buy one until November anyway (8+ months from now)
Yes but GDC the year the PS4 Pro was released has people openly talking about Neo while in line to buy a hotdog. That’s how many people knew about it and how it was confirmed.

You should blame Sony for that.
Sony doesn't even announce games like they use to.

Sorry guys and apologies if I'm mis-understanding. But I thought the Henderson piece was based on information he had obtained from his sources. Rather than something Sony officially said? So in which case how do you know if its his sources that are wrong or Sony's own expectations? That was my point.

It sounds like it's Sony's own expectation.
NDA is also a possibility to think about.

Yes and thanks for digging it out. And yes It does, which is how I always understood it. All I've been trying to say though, is that whilst we can respect Tom Henderson and his sources. It doesn't mean they are always going to be accurate unfortunately. But it's certainly one for me, helps to confirm the Pro's existence.

8k performance mode might not be even on PS6. Is that a typo? Maybe 8k quality mode?
8K won’t take off because there’s no benefit for movies or shows. There’s no additional detail you can draw from 35MM scans higher than 5K, which is why all of Hollywood has standardized 4K as their archival resolution. Hell, Disney even restored Song of the South (removing the camera judder while they were at it) in full 4K for their archives.

Interesting stuff here him mentioning AI upscaling coming to gaming devices and 2024 being a huge year in deployment

Most of Neogaf has short term memory.
This was a thread here when AMD's Senior Vice President David Wang gave us insight about what the AI Accelerators in RDNA3 can be used for.

Zenji Nishikawa's 3DGE: The truth about Primitive Shader vs. Mesh Shader. Inside the geometry pipeline war and AMD's GPU strategy for gamers
4Gamer
What specific themes will they be?

Mr. Wang
: For example, the movements and behavior of enemy characters and NPCs are probably the most obvious examples.
Furthermore, even if AI is to be used for video processing, it should be in charge of more advanced processing. Specifically, a theme such as ``neural graphics,'' which has recently become popular in the 3D graphics industry, may be appropriate.

In DF Direct Richard said something along the lines of "we know it will have 60/64 CUs"

Don't know if that is something written in stone based on the leaks, no? Maybe he's heard it from sources?

This generation is by far the worst. We're playing last gen games in 60-120 fps. And now we're supposed to buy a pro because what? 4k instead of 1440? You can barely see the difference if you're like most people sitting on the couch and playing on the TV. What a joke.
You won't see any huge jump gen by gen moving forward. Moore's law is dead, look at the GPU market and the performance gains gen by gen. And that's ignoring the fact that newer chips are becoming more and more expensive to make.

So, yes, you'll play the same game with slightly better graphics/higher resolution and you'll be happy (according to the WEF)

1440p ? Try 1080p brother - most next gen games are lucky to reach that - Alan wake 2, Robocop and Helldivers 2 just to mention a few are 1080p in performance mode, couple that with 4K screens that most of us have nowadays and the image quality has taken a massive nosedive, fuzzy, blurry image quality and jaggies galore - not to mention that FSR shite "effect" where there's that weird pixel crawling everywhere destroying what's left , Alan wake 2 in particular looks like something out the the PS360 era on a 4K screen and that's a shame since it completely destroys the beautiful graphics and atmosphere 'cause if it.

As soon as we left those cross gen titles behind, the ugly truth started rearing its head again unfortunately.

It's funny actually, we live in the 4K era with 4K consoles and 4K TVs and yet, most output out there is barely that at best and 1080p at worst (and even lower at 900/720p like Avenum for example).

Even the previous PS4/Xone gen was better than this since I can't recall such bad image quality problems , then again, most people were still on 1080p screens so...

Rather we buy pro to get 1440 vs 1080 or 60 vs 30 :d low res on ps5 starts to be common in performance modes

I mean, AW2 runs on Remedy's Northlight engine, HD2 on an ancient (modified?) Autodesk stingray and RE4Re on Capcom's proprietary RE engine (which is already long in the tooth nowadays), so, it's not only when it comes to the UE games brother...

Now, either these consoles weren't that powerful to begin with, or, devs have have already maxed out their capabilities (something which I'm not too sure of).

It's kinda funny, people used to shit on the PS4/Xone due to the "Jaguar CPUs lol®" back in the day but we had games like Ryse, The order 1887, Uncharted 4, GOW etc, heavy graphic titles which ran well and also their Image quality was actually good/not shit like we have on this gen with games like AW2 and others were every effect and general IQ is a blurry, fuzzy, low res affair with terrible FSR "symptoms" on top of that.
Talking about AW2 again, I'm actually shocked at how BAD its image quality is, it's been years since I witnessed something this bad.

Cheers

It makes sense.

From what we have seen they just go with the butterfly strategy they have previously used to avoid Backwards Compatibility issues, if we look at the patents from the PS5 we can see that :)

There's some other couple of leaks the last few weeks pointing towards that from MLD

We're supposed to buy it? I thought you only bought it if you, as an individual with independent thought, wanted it and saw the benefits?

True Moore's Law plays a big role but techniques such as AI upscaling and this patent should help over come Moore's Law.
At least for next-gen.

Which actually reminds me of this AMD's patent.

Yes. Last gen we had that "leap" in graphics we've had every single generation ...except THIS ONE ...not only was it felt right away with games like Battlefield 4/KZ Shadowfall/Infamous SS/Ground Zeroes but that next gen look kept wowing as the years progressed. The Pro consoles (assuming you bought a 4k tv) kept the generation feeling fresh and we were continually wow'd with stuff like UC4/Horizon/God of War/Rdr2/got/death stranding/Lou2!

This gen? Still waiting to be wow'd. Only time I've felt it is on launch day with Demon's Souls and a year later with Ratchet. In terms of graphics this gen has been so frustrating and disappointing, yet because everything looks "good" now as a baseline gamers standards have seemed to have dropped which has allowed devs to be "lazier" in terms of fidelity ..that being said the consoles are also underpowered and I think that's clear. Cross gen games have ALL had either Fidelity mode at 30 fps with pretty nice mix of settings while Performance modes have (since the start of the gen) struggled to have a decent resolution while also having to severely lower graphical settings. That has been a constant even up until now where games are finally (mostly) current gen only!

The only difference is that now we're seeing those performance modes plummet in terms of resolution/iq at 60 while Fidelity modes are also lower res/worse iq than they were early in the gen. The important thing to note I think is thar there has always been a point where these consoles struggle - Control Ultimate Ed came out in 2021 and devs took their time making it especially for next gen yet it could only do 4k/30 with RT reflections and Perf mode was 60 fps but stuck with med/low settings. Cyberpunk 2077 took even more time and they couldn't even get RT reflections to work and it's performance mode isn't very impressive looking while having to rely on FSR. On MS side of things in 2021 they had Forza Horizon 5 which looks next gen at 30 fps but switch to 60 fps and it loses so much tesselation and texture detail as well as having worse lighting.

Those 3 games are good test cases. They show where and how these consoles struggle. They show a stark divide between Fidelity mode and Performance modes. That same pattern is happening with the current crop of games. One thing is certain tho and that's that this gen hasn't had any kind of leaps and that no leap is coming unless maybe a PS5 Pro comes out. I say "maybe" because we've clearly seen a less ambitious Sony and MS this gen (perhaps most 3rd parties as well). For example GoW Ragnarok- sure it looks ever so slightly better than GoW 2018 ..what are they doing with all that leftover horsepower of PS5 then? They just gave us 60 fps and called it day it seems. If Sony can't be bothered to make Spiderman 2 a proper PS5 showcase that tells me that even Sony is less focused on graphics.

Clusterfuck of a generation ..just plain confusing on many levels ..

The biggest reason we didn't feel there was a jump was becuase of the pro/xbox one X mid gen refresh. We all would have went from 1080p ps4/xbone to 1440p at 60 or 4k at 30, and it would have felt like a much bigger jump.
But where is our official specs, I'm in the mood for specs.

But,in terms of fill rates the PS5 and the Series X are 2x the PS4 Pro and XboneX.

Which is why cross-gen titles between PS4/PS5 have such significant performance and resolution uplifts on PS5

But PS5 has terrible ray-tracing performance and so most PS5-native games which try to leverage RT in some way perform equally or even worse than they would have on PS4 with just plain rasterization

Then there's Square Enix LOL

I think PS6 could exceed expectation if it hits in 2028.

N2P would be mature enough for Sony around that point and will feature both Gate-All-Around FET & Backside Power Delivery; then pair that with Chiplets & AMD's Infinity Fanout Links.
But what will be your expectations in 2028? Remember AI is taking over so so graphic could already be looking really good through trickery before 2028 So you might not be impressed lol ( joking)

I mean, we're about to get our second wave of "Wow" graphics (you've stated that Demon's Souls and Ratchet had that "Wow" value, so let's say that was wave one) next year, with jaw-dropping visual showcases in the form of Grand Theft Auto VI and Death Stranding 2, from two of the most talented and technologically proficient studios on Earth.

Hell, we might not even have to wait until next year for these native current-gen titles to arrive, as both Assassin's Creed Codename Red and Star Wars Outlaws, two current-gen only Ubisoft titles slated to come out this holiday, are said to be taking advantage of raytraced global illumination (same as GTA VI and DS2) and virtualized geometry. And knowing what Ubisoft was able to pull off last generation with their first real next-gen blockbuster, Assassin's Creed Unity, and looking at the fantastic results achieved with last year's Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora (RTGI & reflections), I'd say we're in for a true visual spectacle with these two upcoming titles.

That's Sony's intention by producing it. Stop trying to spin what I'm saying just to be a smartass.
My point is noone is forcing you to buy it. I probably won't, I didn't buy the PS4 pro either. If you have the PS5 already there probably won't be much reason to buy it unless you really must have the latest and greatest. If you don't have a PS5 already the Pro will probably be the one to get or at least gives you the choice.

In fact I'd argue that many people who complain about not much of a jump between the PS4 generation and PS5 generation would have bought the PS4 Pro so I think you see more of a benefit if you don't buy the .5's, or only buy those (this gen with the lack of first party actually shows maybe the latter is better waiting for)

One thing I don't see mentioned much is the hardware/chassis visual design. I know a lot of folks don't care but I've always been a stickler for some iconic looking hardware, unlike most other electronics which I prefer understated and squirreled away, I've always liked my console centre stage and visible to add a bit of flair to a setup..

Wonder if it'll basically be another PS4 Pro approach which just expands on the OG & Slim system, if it'll retain the same colour scheme or if it'll be a bit more radical.

Lots of hideous concepts out there and some nice but impractical ones, then there's a bunch of AI ones popping up.

The quality and specifics are bad but as a general concept I kinda have a soft-spot for this monstrosity... :messenger_grinning_sweat:
