Dolphin - Emulating Wii and Gamecube Games

GOD. Skyward Sword. The full game looks SO GOOD. I thought the demo was pretty nice in it's performance and was pretty sure the final game would run worse! It's absolutely solid! The only problems I can see are at night on my machine, when the bloom goes into overdrive, the framerate drops to about 27-25 fps. I feel like I won't need my Wii at all for this one! Running r7718, DX11.

Did you try turning AA off? if you cant run at 4x res, you could go lower.

I've got it on 2X res and no AA, still nothing. :/

Sadly, no dice. I upgrated from r7714 to r7719m and same issue / 20 FPS.

Probably my processor isn't fast enough, which sucks because all my other 30 FPS games (TP, MH3Tri, Xenoblade etc.) run perfectly. :/ AMD Phenom II overclocked to 3.81 Ghz.

Definitely try 3x, uncheck the EFB skip option, and uncheck the RAM option from EFB Copies. OpenCL doesn't seem to do much in my experience. I'm using a Phenom too, OC'd to 4Ghz. Before I had it OC'd to 3.7Ghz, so it may not be your processor. Have you tried DX11?

I'll try that. I'm not sure if I can overclock to 4x without increasing the power to the processor. I suppose I could try, I've just never done that so I'm afraid of frying my computer. If push comes to shove I may just give it a shot though.

EDIT: Yeah, nothing changed. I'll just have to muster the courage to try and overclock my processor to 4.0 Ghz... I'm just kinda scared. Is it difficult to up the power to a processor?

I don't have Zelda, but is EFB Copies supposed to be set to ram?

Actually, for Zelda that should be unchecked, i believe.

That setting made the biggest difference in performance.. I was able to play it @ 30 fps on my 2.2Ghz i7 in my macbook pro after that..

Yeah, it's honestly why I still haven't completed Xenoblade or Mario Galaxy 2. If I play them on my Wii, they look, well... quite poor on my 47" TV, but if I play them on Dolphin, they look and play great most of the time, but the small glitches really ruin the experience for me.

Same here. I'm hoping Zelda SS will be different, getting everything set right now.

Also what is the general consensus from people already playing the game, is revision 7719 ideal or are any of the newer revisions better?

Emulation Status / Speed

Best revision: r7719

Best settings:

Everything default, except:

- Prefered graphics plugin: DirectX 11
- AA method should be done only by using higher internal resolutions. AA "standard" settings causes glitches.
- AF should be set to 2X or higher to reduce/eliminate color banding
- Disable "Skip EFB Access from CPU" to fix the pointer accuracy
- Disable "External Frame Buffer"
- Disable "Cache Display Lists"
- EFB Copies should be enabled only with the "Virtual" checkbox.

Everything else (audio settings, advanced graphical options) are a matter of personal choice and won't make much difference, so if possible, stick with the above.

FAQ:

Misaligned pointer for slingshot pellets, arrows, etc
Disable "Skip EFB Access from CPU" to fix. Reduces performance.

I have a Wiimote but not a Motion+, can I play the game?
No. Emulation isn't possible. Also, using save-states won't get around this.

Large blocky shadows around Link / floor?
Looks like a problem with the DX9 plugin, using the DX11 plugin fixes this. Using a newer revision may also fix this but doing so yields more disadvantages.

Link's sword is invisible
Disable "Cache Display Lists".

The background (depth of field) is all corrupted, blocky and/or jagged looking
This is a problem with newer revisions of the emulator (3.0+). There are two possible solutions: use the recommend revision (r7719), or set "EFB Texture to RAM" (causes slowdowns).

Do I need a sensor bar, since the game is using the Motion+ gyros for motion tracking?
Although not needed, it's recommended as the sensor bar tells the Wiimote which direction is forward so that it can correctly correlate hand movements with sword swings. In other words, it serves as a "real time calibration". Without it, keeping the Motion+ calibration is way harder.

So, this problem is in SMG2 with LLE as well. If you pay close attention you'll notice that every soundeffect is a fraction of a second late. There is definitly audio lag.

No one?

Also, why is it that...

...every revision besides 3.0 I tested is actually slower than 3.0? in SMG2 it always cost me around 2 to 8FPS, 3.0 is always smoother and faster, especially the sound.
...3.0 crashes randmoly on me in 3.0. :( Is that to be expected? Or is there any special setting to make Dolphin more stable? It's not crashing instantly, always takes its time.

Great guide! I guess it's confirmed that AA causes visual problems in the full game. A bit disappointing, but I can't complain too much. Still looks great.

Corky

Nine out of ten orphans can't tell the difference.
What kind of cpu do I need to be able to play Skyward sword at 2560x1440? ( or w/e the corresponding dolphin internal resolution is )

Graphics -> Advanced -> Widescreen Hack
In the General tab you also need to set Aspect Ratio to Force 16:9

It might be different depending on your build, but under the Hacks tab, for EFB Copies select RAM and have Enable Cache selected.

I love you.

This game looks so great now.

O_O

You sir, work MIRACLES!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

I have a question GAF... Since Super Mario Galaxy 2 is extremely demanding with the LLE Plugin (I have mi Phenom II X6 1090t @4.0GHz) and it seems that you need at least 4.5GHz, and considering that the HLE Plugin screws the sound a few minutes in... Could the "experience" be improved/enhanced if I play the OST in the background (in Winamp, WMP or whatever) while I play the game (and changing the music depending on the level).

Has anyone tried that yet???

Anywhere I could get the OST?

Am I being dumb GAF =(

BTW. DX11 Seems to give me a few extra FPS in SMG2 (like 3+ or 7+) compared to DX9 without any loss in quality or effects

SMG2 has some interactive music so you wouldn't be getting the same experience that normal sound would give. Winamp might also use up some system resources.

Is there a glitch with skyward swords AA in dolphin? I'm using Thoraxes' exact settings. I get weird glitches with 8x AA. But if I turn the AA off it works fine. Its like AA messes with the games watercolour style. With 8xAA the watercolour effect is greatly diminished (with glitches) and with AA off the watercolour is back and no glitches. See below:

With 8 x AA (glitch above and to the right of Link) + 'watercolour' artstyle gone:

With NO AA (no glitches) + prominent watercolour background:

Would you mind posting your build and settings? Your second pic is the best I've seen in this thread. Most of the recent pics have some crazy dof going on where it's even applied to the foreground.

And I agree with Thrakier: you're posting the best-looking SMG shots in this thread. What are your settings, revisions, performance? Is it at playable speeds looking like that?

Latest revision, default settings. Only difference between other SMG shots is maxing out the internal res and aa.

Currently running Zelda with r7718 and it's flawless. 8x AF, 4x internal resolution, no AA. Game is freaking beautiful.

Also being naughty and using Gecko infinite hearts code.

Like I've said, that DOF filter is hideous trash. What setting gets rid of it? I've seen it removed in demo screenshots.

There seems to be an issue in your config where the dof is applied to everything, even landscape in the foreground. I don't believe it's supposed to look like that.

Also, what is an "EFB" copy? Thanks.

It looks great when It's accurately (sparingly) used, like in Citizen K's config that I quoted above. Hopefully we can get him to post some screens so I can replicate it.

If you guys don't mind, what was the big advantage from release r7719 over 7718? I'm currently using 7718 with great performance (just happened to have it on my pc from long ago), but I was wondering if I needed to upgrade to 7719. Is it even worth going back and reconfiguring everything and bringing over my save games? Thanks.

All I know is that the current Windows ones don't work (at least with my dongle), and when the new ones came out I suffered for like 3 days to find out how to roll back the proper way to make it work.

Settings, revision r7719M. Also using D3D11.

I just tried using this build + settings on the Skyward sword demo..

I was getting 10 fps on average. The glitches were gone, but i got a smooth 30fps on the 3.0 build.

I'm on mac btw

Man, you guys, I'm getting ignored so hard by every1. ;D So, anyone in this thread able to fix the audio lag which is introduced by LLE? HLE is the fix, sure, but it doesn't work for SMG2...so?

Well, i'll at least answer your question.
No and no. I just played it and didn't bother to fix it ever.

I'm running skyward sword on a thinkpad w520 at 2x resolution and no AA.

gpu: quadro 1000m
cpu: Intel Core i7-2760QM Processor (2.40GHz, 6MB L3, 1333MHz FSB)

I'm getting close to 30fps with some slowdowns here and there. Pretty happy with the performance overall.

Thanks for this. I plan to play mainly Gamecube games.
I have to do a little research on the processors, but is that the new I7 that just came out?

What#s the second no for? ;D I think that lag is rather annoying...whatever.

Another problem is that SMG2 is crashing quiet frequently for me. (like once every 45 minutes).. :( Any ideas on that?

Is there anyway I can start RE4 Wii Edition without a Wiimote? Or at least some way to emulate a Wiimote so I can at least get to the main menu and change controls to Gamecube controls?

I'm stuck on the "Connect nunchuck to Wii remote" screen.

Absolutely. RE4 uses standard, non-motion-plus controls, so you're able to map them to your mouse or even to the game pad. Check the game pad settings for more info.

Yes. Hit the Wiimote toolbar button and set Wiimote 1 to Emulated Wiimote.

Did anyone play through SMG2 with LLE thread on core? I read that this could cause crashing in SMG2. I'd like to know if it's this or my overclock is not 100% stable. Without LLE though the game is running 10% worse, so it kinda sucks... :( Man, I upgraded my rig just to play SMG2 in beautiful HD and it's still not running without quirks... :(

If you want to emulate the pointer with your mouse, you want it to look something like this

ir3ccugd.jpg

Just right click each one to change 'em. If you try to do it the fast way, the pointer will just snap back to the middle every time.

So I'm attempting to get things running through OSX Snow Leopard and everytime I attempt to load a game it gets stuck on a grey screen and states Clearing Code Cache. It worked fine in bootcamp on Windows 7. I'm trying to load up Wind Waker and the problem persists, I've changed a few settings but I'm not really sure what the actual cause is. Can anyone with some knowledge on the OSX side of things provide some insight?

Edit: I should also note that the version I downloaded for Mac was 3.0-202...would a more stable version do the trick?
Edit 2: Nevermind, I changed versions and its working now.

I'm using build 7719. These are my settings (which I got to mostly from advice in this thread):
I had to disable 'skip EFB access from cpu' as it made wiimote aiming wonky in the game. Also as recommended no AA as it produces glitches for me. I don't think AA is needed but I did notice having it on reduced the background watercolour effect (but glitches make AA a no no for me).
zeldaconfigt98o0.jpg

Here's an example of AA reducing the DOF watercolour effect:
No AA:

8xAA:
But like I said this causes weird graphical lighting glitches (although no glitches are in this pic)!

Is there a way to boot to the Wii menu in Dolphin? I've used a bunch of different configs and forgotten what saves are on what config. I'd be easy to look at them in the Wii system menu (and I'd imagine that should also allow exporting to an SD card for transfer to a real Wii).
