Judging from the complaints on this thread, one of these days Nintendo really ought to abandon its 'game for everyone' mantra and say, "fuck it, let's make it super difficult" and make Zelda's Souls or something.

HD definition of course. Complete with grimdark atmosphere everywhere and maybe gritty/witty dialogue and banter.

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about Rayman Legends Wii U.
No, I'm not bad. If I'm not moving my Wii remote in any direction, Link shouldn't suddenly start going left or right, but he did.

Maybe you're too good, and the game senses it, so it purposefully make the game more challenging by messing up the controls for you.

[edit] Also, I did read what you wrote, and I didn't mean any offense. I was meaning to joke around, but upon second reading, I can see how that could be taken offensively. If you read my impressions above your first post I commented on, you'll see that I ask for those having troubles to keep working on it, because i'm not having any. Thus, the only conclusion I can come to is that there is something physically different you are doing compared to me, or some kind of interference.

I also shouldn't have to point my Wii remote over to the left to make Link go straight. The direction Link moves in while swimming hardly has anything to do with skill anyway, you clearly didn't read what I said.
A single press on the dpad didn't correct it? Your issue should normally be solved in half a second.

If Nintendo really wants to make games for everyone, they should make a game for person A, a game for person B, and a game for person C, rather than trying to make one game that A, B, and C will all enjoy.

That works in any other case(aiming, map screen, item screen etc.), but you can't do that to correct the swimming controls. Even after correcting it with the d-pad on the map screen (it was messed up there, too), the swimming was still screwed, so I had to recalibrate.

Also keeping in mind that story wise this is the first Zelda..ever. :p
Yeah, lame excuse but noone there knew about keys, temples, dungeons, items, etc. Everything's new for Link (and everyone; even Fi who's technically an AI created with the sole purpose to help Link).

On top of the people that this will be their first Zelda game ever....even when many of us has been breaking cracked walls with bombs for 25 years.

Yeah, an option for "advanced players" would be nice; but is the same as Pokémon. Over 10 years and, you're told how to pick, capture, fight, etc...in every game. Is part of the reason the games are still a success and didn't became the fad that many thought.

***

In any case, something I didn't expected was to play the entire game with the "Pro" HUD. Saw the pictures of the Wiimote on the screen/HUD and was "scared" that there might be too many buttons and stuff to remember; but well..18 hours so far, Pro since been given the option in around an hour or so and really nice. :p

Or how about having options in one game? Wether an enemy takes away half a heart or a full heart is not going to change any major design of the game. Wether the hint system acts actively forcing hints to the player or acts passively requiring the player to open it up is not gonna affect the game design in any major manner either.

I really don't see what the problem would with having a 'Beginner' and 'Normal' option for game like this.

Ghirahim is one crazy motherfucker and I didn't expect a boss battle that difficult in the first dungeon. Still trying to beat him now. I can get to his second form.
Any pointers?

Also the free CD is godly, the first track alone blows my mind. I'm so glad Nintendo is giving this away for free instead of putting a price on it.

Hold your sword steady in one position for a while and he'll lock his hand in that direction. So bring your sword to the other side and cut him up.

From a gameplay perspective, Hero mode seems to be just that. Should be interesting to see how waggle LOL people will fare once each move becomes critical.

Some comments regarding controls remind me of the time when I discovered Street Fighter 2 with classmates, so many years ago. We had an arcade born near school. SF2 had an unfamiliar learning curve with Hadoken and all, but for months some would only mash buttons. Obviously they never liked the game as much as I did. If you could learn how to master SF2 controls back in the day, there's no reason not to be able to master what Skyward Sword expects from you.

Yeah I wrote about that on the last page (and last post, so no one reads that ;_;). I really believe that Zelda games are rather difficult for new players to get into because of series staples and series logic in general. After having played Zelda games for more than 20 years, it pretty much becomes second nature the way we handle puzzles and conflicts in a Zelda game.

So I understand why Nintendo adds so much hand-holding, putting explanations in the face of the player and so on, as that will help to guide some of the new players.

The problem is that it's affecting both the veteran players and the overall quality of the game(even as minor a problem this may be).

Secondly, in my anecdotal case, my girlfriend eventually got by some of hard(read: easy for us) segments of the intro section and the first dungeon of Twilight Princess, but to continue for another 30+ hours? No she really liked that first part and she enjoyed the theme and setting of the game, but as a new video game player she was more than satisfied spending 13 hours on just a fragment of the game.

Now I'm sure all new players didn't give up early like my gf, but I'm sure that a really small percentage of any new players actually did manage to beat the game.

If it truly is like that, it sorta pisses me off that Nintendo has to degrade the game just so some turist can play the first 15 hours of the game at the expense of our entire game playthrough.

A Pro option to skip tutorials, turn off Fi's constant interruptions, and other handholding would be awesome. Those little things are pretty much the only issues I have with this game. Also B should display the text all at once to make reading faster to skip. Also store owners shouldn't say the exact same thing every time. Nintendo should just cut down or out all the little interface choices that slow the game down.

Question for those a bit further- are you meant to go back to various areas to farm drops to level up your equipment ? Or do you end up going back later on anyway ? I ask because so far the only thing I've had enough crap to upgrade is the wooden shield which proved awful useless in the second dungeon , I bought a metal one instead of course although there's an ornamental skull item I need that I haven't even seen yet.
You don't really have to farm drops, you'll eventually get what you need.
About the ornamental skull, it's dropped by
bokoblins
. The game has a variation of this item that is supposed to be more rare, but for some reason I kept getting that one instead.

I need some help. I've gotten 9 goddess cubes so far. Collected all 9 treasures...I sliced goddess cube 10 saw it go up to the sky so I head up to get it and nothing. It's not even on my map. I am 100% sure I haven't missed anything. Heard a couple people had this problem. Any solutions?
It's not gone.

Had to put the game down after giving up on a certain
heart piece
that I can't get in the first dungeon. I'm fairly convinced that I'm trying to get something that's not quite available to me yet due to the peculiar way that it's presented, so I'm moving past it for now. Still great stuff though, I have no shortage of enthusiasm for what's to come.
You have everything you need to get that heart piece.
Hint:
look up. Like, a lot up.

Yeah minor deal, but it stands out as a sore thumb.

And its not like it would require that much work to implement such changes.

Ah frustrating

To enter the second dungeon, I need
Five pieces to form a key

I already found three of them, but I just can't find the last two pieces. Any help guys? Found one on the sandy slope in the bombable wall, under a watchtower and one nearby the dungeon door

thrust attack is easy to do, just make sure you return the wii-mote to a flat level point forwards before you attempted, I realise this is slightly impractical in the heat of the moment but it does work.

still having trouble, most things there are alternate ways to beat foes.

The big spiders, there is no need to piss about attempting to thrust at them anyway, its much easier to cut them down, do vertical cut from down position to up to flip them, follow up with finishing attack, once you get it down, it takes half a second and you wont even thing about it.

also experiment with bombs, the fucking rock and can take out most normal enemies instantly and often prompt unique animations from enemies :)

I always wonder if these are design choices Nintendo is adamant about keeping like they are essential to the zelda experience because SS shows that they are more than willing to mix up some pretty major parts of the zelda formula. Its like they aren't aware that long time fans may feel that these conventions hurt the game or are do they not even consider any of this stuff an issue? But then they do include an option to speed up the text so who knows?

There's a
room packing intense heat, East of the dungeon door.

casual/new players > veteran zelda players

There's more money in it if they cater to new players, so eventhough they could make some adjustments to better the experience for the veteran players it's just not on their priority list.

If you've found the room east with the intense heat, just run in and go immediately right, you'll catch fire but only for a very short time, so you'll be okay.

I just wish they'd add a few options or something. Still this game is addicting and I normally don't have that reaction to zelda games. I've been playing as much as I responsibly can since Sunday, good thing its thanksgiving this week!

I hope ur using dowsing, its pretty important to find those key fragments

dowsing is for the weak, give me hours of going in the wrong direction and accidental exploration any day :D i always figuire it out in the end, i probably just have a higher tolerance for being lost than others :)

just like real life

no, it most certainly is not. i found the key parts in no time, without ever using dowsing. they are all within that really small area surrounding the temple. it requires absolutely minimal exploration.

This game has too much exploration... no I mean too little. Or something.

Too much searching perhaps?
Are you referring to something in the past few pages? I haven't been following this thread very carefully until after getting the first dungeon under my belt. The only problem with the searching in the game is that it's all for naught. Like TP before it the rewards for going off the beaten path in SS are usually pretty crummy- that is, when they're even there to begin with. At least that's my impression so far. I just opened up the portal to the third area. I'm kinda hoping the whole game isn't as cut and dry as it's been up to this point.

ALRIGHT! If Amazon doesn't screw me over more than they already have I should be playing this game in a few hours!
Just wanted to blindly post this ... now I'm gonna cover my eyes and back out of this thread.

I'm only in the first dungeon, but Fi is mostly annoying when she tells me something I'm literally 2 seconds from doing.

- walk up to slidey block... :ping: 'I have calculated an 85% probability that this block can be moved'

- walking up to save bird... :ping: 'I recommend saving the game'

ffs just let me have a go first, then blink your silly light if I don't get it straight away, then pop out a little later if I'm still stuck. Don't default to retard mode.

is there a way to flip the skulltula around without making it swing wildly and knock you over? I guess thats why the swinging log was in the practice room but I could never do anything except get knocked over by that either.

all the talk of the boss in dungeon 1, don't all the main enemies in the woods basically behave the same way, so they're letting you practice in advance? Seems like the combat requires a lot more patience waiting for an opening than previous zelda games. Unless there is a better way, I'm having to wait for them to attack and me counter. timing is sometimes tight so I'm guessing I'm making it hard for myself.

And my only gripe about the pointer is that for calibration I need to be too close to the wii - in the spare room where its set up my sofa is about 12ft away and that makes the wii pointer jittery and unresponsive.

I find the horizontal spin attack works wonders.

edit - oops, sorry about double post, can't delete......

Alexios

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
Just hit it sideways. It shouldn't swing toward you that way, just side to side and flipping over. Then poke away, two hits should kill it not giving it the chance to get you at all. 12ft shouldn't be too far for the wiimote's camera, have u set the sensitivity to the highest in the Wii settings? I tend to play House of the Dead from a similar distance.

I never got either of those messages from Fi... I think I got one about a pushy block when I was getting the dude his Remlit back on Skyloft, and I think I saved the game as soon as I got out of the Academy, so I don't remember seeing any prompts to save either.

The log is probably meant to teach you how to cope with enemies that bounce back and threaten to hit you, as you're tought to use your shield that way. A sidewards slash will send them spinning about, jump back or use your shield if they threaten to hit you on their return swing, they will tend to come to a rest for a brief moment with their weak spot facing you.

I love how vicious but easy to beat they are when they're not dangling on their webs! Simple uppercut and fatal blow!

WHY ARE YOU SO CONFLICTED IN WHAT YOU FEEL ABOUT THIS GAME??? I have just learned reading this thread that if you question bad design choices you are at odds with yourself, and irrationally demand contradictory things from the game. And when you do that the cool kids will burn you with their scathing wit.

All this talk about the third dungeon being so awesome makes me extremely excited about the fact that I am right outside said dungeon and am about to go home from work.

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
Sigh... ever since I beat the game, I've been depressed. I want more of this Zelda... more as in 500 hours more.

its insanely frustrating. Even my kids (watching me play) are laughing at the game and predicting what stupid arse thing Fi will do next.

All they needed to do was apply a little Mario Bros logic to it - help when its needed, don't presume to know the needs of the player
