FINAL FANTASY XIII-2 Hype/Info Thread [New Battle Videos and Screenshots]

Haven't played it, but if the music is better than the gameplay, I'll just listen to the OST and skip the shitty gameplay.
...... >_>

There's more levels of quality to gameplay than just "ZOMG THE BEST" and "TEH SHITTIEST EVER". Nier's OST is god tier, its gameplay is flawed but still enjoyable.

Except Nier didn't fail, so... that's not true.

well, actually, it did fail. it got medicore reviews which is generally unacceptable nowadays. reviewers cited average gameplay for the reason. it failed so much that that was the studio's last game. how much more evident of failing could it have achieved?

now they are completely wrong and nier is amazing/omg/omfg. i'm just saying.

It's a flawed gem with a beautiful story and music. So yes, they were wrong.

As someone who wasn't following Nier's development, the general impression I got from reviews upon release was that it was the epitome of BAD modern Square Enix train wrecks.

So sad... because when I fished it out of a bargain bin, it was a kind of secret-best RPG experience. Flawed to be sure, but I wouldn't miss it.

I was always teetering on officially ignoring reviews by that point, but that game cemented it. When it comes to niche titles, especially RPGs, I only read gaf impressions and rpgfan.com reviews.

Dengeki PlayStation has a final pre-release interview with Final Fantasy XIII-2 producer Yoshinori Kitase and director Motomu Toriyama. We already shared a few bits from the interview that suggested that the Sazh character will appear not in the main game but as post release download content. Here are some other bits:

Toriyama says that the game's various episodes are at most around 3 hours. They're made like this so that busy people can easily play.
The bonuses for FFXIII owners keep on increasing. Now Toriyama says that if you have FFXIII save data (it doesn't have to be clear data, just save data), you'll get special monster decorations. Additionally, you'll get higher success rates in the game's casino area. The title screen will also have some sort of bonus.
As previously detailed, you face off against the game's download content bosses in a coliseum area. There will also be small story elements here.
There's an area of the world that will provide updates about available download content.
The game has both auto save and save anywhere. Auto Save was apparently included because it's a trend for overseas games. However, it may be a bit hard to figure out where it's saving, so they've included the save anywhere option as well.
You can make Odin into an ally monster. He first appears as a boss for one of the game's episodes.
After clearing the game, you'll return to the opening. If you close the Historia Crux gate there, you'll be able to enjoy a "New Game Plus" type experience. You may want to play the game a second time, as there are some items that you'll only get on the second time through, like certain monster decorations that you get based off your Live Trigger conversation choices.
When you first start the game, Noel and Serah can use Attacker, Blaster and Defender Roles.
As we mentioned earlier, Dengeki gave the game an "S" rating. This was part of one of the magazine's "Buyers Guide" reviews, and was not the full numbered review. As plusses, the review listed the selectable difficulties and the large amount of extra content. As a minus, the review said that the load times for switching areas is a bit long.

I recommend this. The music is wasted on the game and doesn't really match half the time.

(FYI, it is a C-rate God of War in a world where God of War is a B-rate Devil May Cry.)

Nier was my surprise favourite of that year. I didn't follow its development either, but in hindsight, that might have been a good thing. I didn't really listen to reviewers that much prior to that, though. I just like reading review text because I want to know about game mechanics. I've also started to go into games with tempered expectations or minor positive optimism.

Mmm?

Is this just Easy and Normal (+only using Noel and Serah sans monsters)? No Second/Hard/Chaos modes, for example?

Nier is a fantastic game with a fucking fantastic story. The music matches all of the time and you are DEAD wrong.

Sorry, I'll try to make it a habit to listen to Nier evangelicals more.

EDIT: Selectable difficulties is music to my ears. However I won't let myself get excited about it.

Best soundtrack in a jRPG incoming?
It's close to that already.
Nah. Chrono Cross went home with that award a long time ago (...with Nier, Shadow Hearts, Personas 3/4, Digital Devil Saga 2, Final Fantasy VI, Genso Suikoden (all of 'em) and Zero no Kiseki as runners-up).

LOL, I'm kidding. Different strokes. :)

Anyway, the third disc was great. Soundtrack's getting better and better.

...?

Hey waitaminute... ShootieHG's on this? That ShootieHG? Now I just want the Devil May Cry HD Collection.

You can say all you want about the gameplay, but you can make no good arguments that the music in the game isn't used well. It's often used perfectly (I don't even remember when was the last time before Nier where I would so often just stop doing what I was doing just to listen to the music and soak in the atmosphere it so perfectly created).

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
There's another track by Uematsu in disc 3. It has a "de" in the title. Can't translate it obviously. :p

Pulse de Chocobo or something the like is my guess. XIII had a couple of different Chocobo-themes, XIII-2 will probably have a couple as well.

They're just using the original melody and remixing. It's Rodeo de Chocobo.

yep Cross has yet to be beat and probably never will. I just listened... its good, but I liked FXIII's soundtrack better. There is too much vocals.. :/ That shit will get old after 100 hours. Also the Steppe music.. :/ wtf

I have to say that I'm quite torn over this.
I did and platinum'd FFXIII in Japanese, but the appeal of heaving superior voice acting and still English text to spend less time translating on the fly is really attracting.
However, I don't really want to have a Chinese box ;_;

Your just listening to few selected samples, the majority of the tracks are still not available and who knows, maybe less vocals hide in there. I like every single track I heard 'till now though, the weakest so far being the one by N.Uematsu.

Uematsu didnt do that one. He's just credited for the original Chocobo theme but he isnt responsible of the arrangement heard there.

Odin as a recruit-able ally? The other summons better follow suit or they'll be hell to pay. This game's OST is absolutely incredible, I was completely blown away. Keep it up SE ♪

100% this. Mainstream media has been out of touch recently. I hardly seek out reviews except for big budget American releases, as that's where all their energy goes. They ignore Japanese games for whatever reason, citing artistic choices as design flaws (clearly exemplifying ignorance: JRPGs, visual novels, etc).

RPGFan has always been my go to source for everything RPG: western or otherwise. I find my opinion more often than not coincides with theirs. Take their top 5 RPGs of the last gen as an example:

1) Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2
2) Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3
3) Final Fantasy X
4) Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4
5) Final Fantasy IX

I agreed with everything. The titles, the positioning. I would have ranked them the exact same way.
