[The Rare Canceled Game Art Thread]

Come work with us on our new Kinect title. Blah....

That's selling them a little short. Rare is as much as a technology developer for Xbox as they are a game developer.

Working at Rare is not like working at most studios. We have a tight connection with the wider organisation of Microsoft and we influence and shape the direction of ecosystems, hardware and platforms. Engineering at Rare is the tip of the spear; working with our first-party partners and the teams of the Xbox organisation, we often create the beach head for others to land on. What we’re really looking for are deep technical experts. Engineers who have shipped great titles, with lots of wisdom about what works and what doesn’t.

Aside from doing amazing work, Rare is also a place for amazing play. We have strong involvement from staff on morale-boosting events; great parties, free drinks and fruit, occasional visits from a free ice-cream van or on-site massage and lots more. Being located in an idyllic country park, we have to cook lunch on site – this too, we take seriously: our head chef prepares two gastropub-style choices every day. If nothing takes your fancy, you can instead order your own custom-made sandwich from the deli and enjoy it with a fresh cup of coffee from our on-site Starbucks. After hours, there’s lots of social activity going on if you’re up for a night out, a film or a game. Speaking of games, we give you all Microsoft Studios games for free. Not enough? Trust us, there’s more…

That sounds absolutely awesome
...if only it was like that
.

Ahh, and Neal Clark (web & community support) is gone again, he only had a three-month contract.

Cool. Looks like it's in an early beta stage (music is final at least), a good number of differences between it and the final version. Here's hoping that the earlier version of Diddy Kong Pilot or the Voxel version of Banjo Pilot is next!

Taking a guess based on what's been released so far, he should have Sabreman Stampede, Diddy Kong Pilot 2001, and Banjo Pilot Voxel.

And who changed the thread title?

Haha! Like the thread name change! It should just be called, Everything Rare.

How about RareabandonWare?

He's got the Superman 64 beta as well, but he's not releasing any non GBA beta until next year (so the next two releases should be DKP 2001 and Banjo Pilot Voxel)

On a different note, does a Xbox or Xbox 360 emulator even exist?

There is an XBOX emulator, but sadly it didn't get very far (lack of interest) AFAIK, it only runs Turok Evolution (and pretty poorly at that!)

Mind you though, there's a slim chance that it might work if you burn the ISO onto a DVD and play it on a 360 (since the 360's BC works with Ghoulies and Conker)

Nothing exists for 360 or PS3 on PC emulation though (and there won't be anything for a long time to come)

That's kind of unfortunate, would've loved to try out Stampede one day.

Here are some other images of the Grunty's Revenge beta:

Oh man, I would love to see Dinosaur Planet in its finished glory :( Was really looking forward to the N64 version. Or, if there's a Gamecube version before it was turned into a StarFox game

The game page is now updated with some insider info from Paul Rahme. Good stuff!

Good stuff indeed, I didn't even know about those hidden initials! (do you know where they were hidden?)

So it started development just before Banjo Tooie launched then? That's quite a development cycle! (2.5 years!)

The fact that it had a load of levels cut out goes to explain the game's brevity I guess then. A shame that it ran into so many problems, because it seemed to have much greater ambition originally!

I wonder if this beta version that's about to be released still has the flying mechanic?

Reading about Rare managing projects damn near every project sounds like a mini-Duke Nukem Forever.

Actually, it sounds more like LA Noire to me, what with people's names being cut out of credits and masses of content being cut! (even more apt if you consider Microsoft's sweeping managerial changes in demand!)

PR: Rare Boosts Senior Team With Top Talent
Twycross – 2 December 2011 – Rare is delighted to announce a series of senior appointments to strengthen the already impressive team behind Kinect Sports: Season Two, the most recent iteration in Kinect's best-selling series.

No less than four senior hires have joined the company in the last month. Andrew Dennison has been appointed Software Director and joins the studio fresh from Codemasters, where he spent the last 10 years as Lead Programmer. His most recent project was DiRT 3.

Jon Vincent is now Rare's Studio Audio Director. He joins the company from Ubisoft Reflections, where he was Audio Director for Driver: San Francisco. He has also worked at Midway and Pivotal Games.

Danny Isaac is another boost to the team, taking on an Executive Producer role. Most recently, Danny was Studio Manager at Relentless Software. Prior to this he was Head of Development for EA Korea, and worked on several iterations of FIFA while at EA Canada.
Last but not least, Peter Ridgway will be Rare's new Technical Art Director. Peter joins from Codemasters where he was responsible for future Art technology; he has also worked in Lead roles at Sony Europe.

In announcing these four new additions to the Rare and Microsoft Studios team, Senior Studio Director Craig Duncan said: "Everyone at Rare welcomes the skills and input of some of the industry's most exciting people as we boost an already strong talent base with these latest hires. We have big ambitions here at the studio, and industry professionals such as Andrew, Jon, Danny and Peter will help ensure we fulfil them. This is the latest step in Rare's continued evolution and we have plans to further augment our team over the coming months. As a first party Microsoft studio, our mission is to attract the brightest and best talent in the business; these four appointments demonstrate that we are well on our way to achieving this."

About Rare
As part of Microsoft Studios, Rare is a first party developer dedicated to thrilling its audience through innovation on Microsoft platforms. With a history of award-winning franchises on multiple platforms stretching back through three decades of gaming, Rare remains on the leading edge of high-quality entertainment and innovation. Rare is based in the Midlands, UK.

That PR seems a little desperate honestly. 'Look at us, we hired four dudes you've never heard of from Codemasters and Ubisoft Reflections!'

But positive news for Rare I suppose, better that they're expanding their team rather than trimming it.

Given all the inherited racing experience, I wonder if they're working on the next PGR, the rumored Forza World, or a kart racer.

A Banjo-themed Diddy Kong Racing 2 would be nice ^^. But somehow I think MS doesn't want to win over anyone who doesn't like shooters, casual games or realistic racers :/.

Come on, guys. They're not making any racing games, that's clutching at straws. We all know the next game will be Kinect Sports Season Three, whether we like it or not. =P

The webmaster at RWC contacted me and asked if I could post something for him as his account here is still in the registration process.

Hello Neogaf users!

This is Brandon, webmaster of RareWareCentral. I'm glad you all like the beta ROM releases. I noticed a guess that I may have Sabreman Stampede, Early Diddy Kong Pilot and Banjo-Pilot Voxel. I will confirm now that I don't have any 360 beta titles, the only one I've ever come close to is GoldenEye 007 XBLA in where the seller backed out in the last minute of purchase.

I'm not quite sure where my releases will go next, it may take some time before I can release any more once I've released the GBA games. I am very interested in releasing beta Rare N64 games. I do have some of those and good ones as well. Unfortunately to all of our disappointment, I do not have Dinosaur Planet, I was however so close to obtaining it on cartridge that you'd most likely be suicidal if you were in my position. Not Twelve Tales either, but I am working hard to obtain it. My offer on $15,000 for the game has still not gone through, nobody has contacted me. Sadly, I doubt anybody ever will. I want to expand the numbers of beta N64 games I have before I start putting them on the net.

Alright, I'm off to be a bit more depressed about Rare's future.

FUUUUUUUUCCCCCCKKKKKKKK!!!!!!! NNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh come on! Fucking hoarding bastards. I guess this is how museum curators feel :(

Anyway, we greatly appreciate everything you've done so far (beta releases and otherwise) I'm grateful you've gotten what you have done for all of us. Thank you so much!

Even moreso than getting to peek into the creation process with the beta's, more than anything else, I just want to see Rare's history get preserved properly. It would be a tragedy to lose all of the hard work that they created (and I'm sure the old staff feel the same way)

N64 Dinosaur Planet would be pretty neat. We could find out how much was Starfox Adventures and how much was cut (assumingly Krystal content)

Makes me wonder if he just couldn't save it out of the garbage or if someone else bought it.

Neat finds! It's pretty cool to see all of those Rare displays circa 2000. It makes me wonder what Dinosaur Planet would have been like on the N64.
Maybe General Scales would have been the final boss for real.
I went to E3 the years that Dinosaur Planet and Starfox Adventures were first shown. As far as I can remember, every area/stage of DP that was playable at E3 was transferred into SFA and most of what had been shown at the time made its way into it too. It would still be cool to play the old version but I don't think the gameplay would have been all that different than what we got.
