South Park RPG: First Screenshot And Combat Dev Diary

yes, i wigged out when i heard this.

instantly 1,000x more interested when PAPER MARIO is namedropped.

i love this board.

Yeah seriously, I was going to pass on this game until I heard "Paper Mario style combat."

One of the most enjoyable combat systems ever in my opinion, right up there with Battle Network's combat system.

this really feels like earthbound with a southpark skin, i like where its going

People say the most random things sometimes. Nothing about the game sounds like Earthbound, unless maybe you were talking about how it's zany and an RPG, but that's not really a basis for such a comparison.

You are a good person and its a shame no other games have stolen that system.

God I hope Randy Marsh is a companion.

Oh god, I don't know which Randy Marsh I would want though! Randy Marsh vs. Batdad? "yeah Obama" Randy Marsh?

As someone who still likes South Park (they had more good episodes then bad this season), loves Paper Mario's battle system, and loves Obsidian's previous work.... I can't help but be really, really optimistic about this game. Oh please don't bite me in the ass optimism....

"What do you wanna do, huh? What do you wanna do"

He takes his shirt off at the start of every battle.

this idea cracked me up. randy marsh is such a great character.

it may be that the stereotype (if it is even that anymore) is so far from most of my experiences with people who play games so it doesnt affect me, but i do not feel alienated at all by "pale basement dwelling virgin" comments. its been 12 (or so) years since those things have simultaneously applied to me! also my gaming friends tend to be successful and well adjusted.

on topic, i will buy this. seems like it keeps a lot of what makes the show great intact. i could also see the superhero theme being used in a sequel or something.

So full price retail "2d" single player 20 hour rpg? This may be a great litmus test for getting certain types of games out of the PSN/XBLA/$20 ghetto.

The shots look like straight out of the show. I do not have a bullshot calibrator set for that type of art but this could look amazing moment to moment.
Why isn't there a HUD or anything like that?

Haha perfect.
Could be non final. Lots of games are demoed without a hud. Most don't even show anything related to playing the game when they flag something as real gameplay in a commercial.

Yeah it just makes me nervous because it looks 100% like South Park, no jaggies or anything.

Suspicious.

Paper Mario-influenced combat = YES PLEASE.

This. The jrpg genre would be so much less stale if they would try to put more active player controlled elements into the combat. The Mario RPG's still remain gameplay wise some of the most fun turn based RPG's ever because of this.

This game is sounding nice though I'll admit I was probably a bit more dismissive at first than I should have. In a way its interesting that obsidian is drawing qualities from past properties to make successors which are in certain ways a culmination and superior evolution, as they've done that for pretty much every game they've released (KOTOR2, New Vegas, NWN2, DS3 doesn't really count). In other words, get Obsidian if you want sequels which play better than the original in almost every conceivable way. Almost makes me think with this JRPG-esque effort that whole rumor of them wanting to do a Chrono sequel might be a very good thing indeed.

I like how the GI story mentioned that if someone walked in the room and, saw you playing this game and didn't know it was the game, it would be easily mistaken for the actual show.

A 20 hour RPG, if it's really good content, is definitely a full retail game. Mass Effect 1 was about 20 hours if you didn't drive around barren planets mining minerals and didn't clear out every one of those identical random planet compounds.

It is not that 20 hours is too short but selling it as 20 hours makes it sound like less of a game for the genre. Alpha Protocol is one of the best RPGs ever but 20 hour linear RPG was not used as a selling point.

This honestly sounds really awesome.

My reactions have gone from WTF --> Hmm... --> Take my money.

Well plenty could still go wrong, but I like what I see so far. Still unhappy and worried about this being a full retail release, though.

I hope the game has new theme music akin to the typical South Park-style vocal music:

Trey has to sing on the soundtrack. I demand it.

Rather than fixating on his bad joke, I say we turn this thread into a feverish masturbation session where we speculate on how revolutionary this game will be and how many GOTY awards it will win from basically zero information. Or is that only done with PS3 exclusives?

Yeah. Despite being somewhat interested, I am avoiding The End of Us threads, too.

I hope Trey and Matt write some music for this as well. They gotta do some boss battle music with singing. They're the masters of comedy songs.

I wonder if this is going to be like Comic Quest. I wouldn't mind something in that vein.
I like CQ but it was a 'my first RPG', this looks to have a very gental learning curve but with a lot of high end stuff for RPG fans to really dig into. (If their hype is to be believed.)
And CQ was cute and funny, SP can be that as well, just with added exploding heads and paedophile jokes.

There's soooo much good material to draw from. But I'd like them to do more original stuff. I dont want a bunch of rehashing everything from past South Park's.

Wow, a turn-based RPG. I enjoy South Park, but if it was another real-time, action RPG I would have probably passed. But being turn-based will most likely put it over the hump to buy, especially since it's being compared to Paper Mario.

South Park + RPG by Obsidian + Turn based + Writing by Trey/Matt + Paper Mario influence.

PRETTY SURE THIS WILL BE GOOD

Good plan. Wonder how they'll interpret the TV-MA rating in relation to the usual ESRB ratings.

It's a good question actually, I'm Australian so our ratings are pretty much the same across the board with the exception of the R18+ issue.

Even tho he told us twice it's not just satire but has this adventure to it, I'm still not convinced

10 for combat look though, can't get any better than that. Everything else I heard was fine too

Disagree, not every turn-based RPG needs active/timing elements in it... and I'm saying this as a HUGE Shadow Hearts fan.

The 'my first RPG' part is what I liked about it. It was easy not to get too lost in the minutiae like most RPGs. Just play the game, get the experience, get the story, and get on to something else.

I would like to get both CQ and South Park in an easily digestible episodic format. Just like the TV show, something that I can just throw on when nothing else is on. Thank god southparkstudios.com works internationally.

i thought you aussies resolved taht r18+ issue. or were steps taken but nothing came of it?

i am in the us, but i care because it bothers me when games are given differential treatment from other media.
