The Last Of Us: Late 2012/Early 2013, 3rd Person, [Update 2: More Info In OP]

I'm 100% down doing a focus on "father/daughter relationship" story.

There's a reason I was able to get into SH1 like I did, and why I love SH:SM as much as I do. Go for it, Naughty Dog, I will eagerly await the final product.

regarding that bonfire... who wants to bet that there will be at least two Joel monologues in this game around a fire or some other brief quiet moment where he is describing how amazing the "old world" was to Ellie, in a stereotypical "glory of times past" montage?

Ellie: "Is it true? What you said earlier? About there being people here who didn't always try to kill one other, a long time ago?"
*Joel looks longingly at the starry night sky*
Joel: "I...yes, it's true."
Ellie: "Can you...tell me about it, just this once? About the neon lights and those car things you told me about? About Christmas?"
Joel: "Well, to be honest, i spent most of my years in prison for murder..."
*begins awkward rant against foreigners*
I'd love this turn.

BTW, those artwork are pretty cool.

*at some point Ellie falls asleep during the speech, to which Joel smiles and tucks her in*

would be good if true... I'd like a scene that will stay in my memory like the Drake bit on Elena's lap.

Or we might just get something cheesy like this...

HOLY CRAP.

Just downloaded the video off PSN...
The video makes it look like something from PS4 compared with the Youtube version which made it feel generic.

Yeah the video on PSN is like 100% better looking than what I saw on Spike TV HD.

God they sound full of themselves in that Eurogamer interview.

Uncharted's cut scenes were well acted, but let's not get ahead of ourselves with the quality of the actual story of Uncharted, which was your basic B movie stuff.

Just calm down there Neil.

Well, that's the whole point. They are trying to take the story to the next level in TLOU, as well as the execution. Neil doesn't need to "calm down", as much as be driven and ambitious enough to see it through.

He talks about how poor other stories are in videogames, while talking about how hard they work. I assumed he menat they also worked hard on the story of Uncharted.

Uncharted's story was standard fare.

He needs to calm down.

Uncharted 3 have some nice quiet and emotional moment imo. but you're right, the scope of Uncharted story is your standard light hearted popcorn flicks. like Indiana Jones, it's not gonna win oscar award for deep emotional story and it's not even trying to be like one.

now they want to try a more heavier theme and story. the story about 2 people's journey in post apocalyptic word have more potential oscar grab than treasure hunter with attitude theme Uncharted has. not saying they're aiming for oscar caliber story, but at least they want to try to make a deeper, mature story than your usual popcorn videogame story.

hopefully there's a portion of the game that we can play pre-apocalypse, like when the guy relives one of his fond memories.

would be nice to see how ND handles a major city like New York city with traffic, pedestrians, etc

Character interaction in the Uncharted games is peerless. Most people want that more than a plot that has no holes.

Calm down yourself :p

But he was talking about Story. I said myself, the acting is very good in Uncharted, and the characters DO interact well.

**side note**

Hollywood needs to speak to Naughty Dog about the tech they use for faces, especially for eyes, but in Tron for example, Young Jeff Bridges looked weird thanks to the souless eyes. Naughty Dog seems to have nailed eyes with life.

/end note.

But Neil rips on the industry for shit stories, when the stories in the series he's known for are average at best.

It's great that they'll be aiming for more with TLoU, but that doesn't mean they'll achieve what they set out to.

There are a lot of projects every now and then that we hear the developers trying to strive for something deeper and then the game releases and we realize its nothing but a shadow of their initial ideas. Im hoping ND can make something happen here that pushes game experiences forward.

He's talking about storytelling...which is very different from story. Uncharted has a B-movie story intentionally, but the storytelling is pretty much above all other games as of right now.

Yeah, that came off weird to me too, but maybe he was talking specifically about LOU, at least, that's what i'm guessing, given the fact that they admittedly think the set pieces first and wrap the story around them later, in uncharted games (and it shows).

I guess it depends on what you classify as "storytelling" but i think Uncharted excells at seamlessly blending gameplay and scripted action moments, with decent humor to spice it up, but nothing more, really.

Regardless of what the game turns out to be like gameplay-wise (so far I'm thinking Uncharted, in a city), it's nice to see a studio that doesn't have to conform to the lowest common denominator. I'd like to think that third parties could do the same and survive.

I started playing Uncharted 3 (finally) and I am a little worried about a few thing. I am playing on Hard, and AI seems atrocious! If you wait behind cove bad guys one by one start walking like idiots towards you so you can shoot them in the face. Same goes for friendly AI. They act weird. I really don't remember it being this "bad" in U2 but maybe I am wrong.

One thing that does feel worse then in U2 is shooting. Yes I got the patch but it feels stiff and I don't know unsatisfying .

I love the game so far, on chapter 6. Chapters 2 and 3 are one of my favorites in Uncharted games. But I noticed these little things. I usually don't like to nit pick things but since TLOU will have AI with you, it's interesting to think about it.

Did you change the aim settings in the options menu?

Did you go into the settings and switch "alternate aim settings" to on?

DL'ing and installing the patch alone doesn't fix the old aiming, you need to turn on alt. settings. Post patch aiming is smooth and satisfying as butter.

EDIT: beaten.

Yeah I know, my point is, maybe they feel like it's time to show their next game. TLOU got a lot of attention. And they as Sony premier studio maybe feel over shadowed by ND and their tech.

But they're not Sony's premier studio, ND is, both in terms of tech and in terms of providing top tier games on Sony platforms. Santa Monica (and I'm talking about the team that works on the God of War games and not the a handful of game designers who don't work directly at that studio whom Sony sends to non-Sony studios to consult on Sony-published games) basically lags behind both in terms of game development and platform leadership.

I guess you make a valid point. But they are supposed to be. They co develop many games and actually I think their tech might be even better. GOW3 was their first gen game, who knows what they have now. It's been a while since GOW3 and they for sure won't release next one in March. So that means if they have a game for fall 2012(almost 3 years), they will have to announce it rather soon. Probably E3 but you never know. They MUST release something in 2012, I would be shocked if that was not the case.
Regardless of them helping many developers on their games, like Sorcery, Starhawk etc.

I think everything is on. I'll check in a few minutes. Thanks for the tip. Will report later on. Even if we shouldn't spam any more

In the timespan that it's taken SSM to ship one game (GOW III), Naughty Dog has managed to ship a complete trilogy and announce a new IP that has been in development for 2 years already.

ND is Sony's premier studio by miles. I can't even imagine what the PS3 library would look like if SSM, Geurilla, etc. were half as productive.

Healthy competition between internal studios is good. Come to think of it do Sony's internal studios work with each other or they all have their secret tech?

Should keep in mind that God of War 2 came out the same year as Uncharted 1 (2007). ND had a head start this gen.

However I agree that ND has been overall more productive than SSM this gen, but SSM has still done pretty well. Let's just wait and see if they have something to release in 2012.

But then we're not talking about the team that works on God of War, that team is not co-developing anything, we're talking about a small number of designers unrelated to the core internal team assigned to non-Sony developers like Lightbox, someone like Brian Upton (who also worked on Warhawk) who is working on Sorcery, you might as well give "Sony Santa Monica" credit for half of the stuff that comes out of SCEA, but that would be ridiculous, Sony Santa Monica as a label publishes many games, Sony Santa Monica as an internal team basically does only God of War for the last two generation since moving off Kinetica, and has only made one PS3 game.

I wouldn't be surprised if they don't release a single thing, they don't really lead on a platform.

Yeah I changed it now, and it feels like U2, thanks for the tip. But the real question is, why the hell wasn't that already in the game?

I hope the game takes you to Philadelphia. I think there would be only slight decay.

And hopefully meet the cast of "It's always sunny in Philadelphia".

I dont know, if I had to choose between Naughty Dog or Santa Monica I will choose Santa Monica

I feel so as well. I think their next game ( I expect it to be announced by E3) is going to be something special.

I wouldn't be surprised if they don't release a single thing, they don't really lead on a platform.

Just because they haven't announced their new IP (and they are working on one) doesn't make them less of a studio. Just 5 days ago ND was "Uncharted studio".
SSM has as well two studios. One working on most likely GOW4 and another on confirmed new IP. Job listing point at that and that both are PS3 games. I give ND one game over SSM. Since in 07 SSM released GOW2 and ND U1.

Yeah word, I didn't think of that.

To be fully transparent though, I don't hold SSM in as high regard since the departure of David Jaffe. GOW III was a technical marvel yes, but I don't think anyone would disagree with the fact that Jaffe's replacement completely butchered and fucked up the story. That left a really bitter taste in my mouth and almost ruined the game for me. The trilogy did not get the ending it deserved.

SonysantaMonica twitter going up and hinting at announcements, less then a week this was shown. I doubt it's a coincidence.

I doubt it, but what is the link to their twitter?

Is this confirmed? That would mean 3 Sony studios have moved on to 2 teams (ND, SSM, GG). SP will probably do that as well eventually.

God of war 2 butchered the story despite the awesome pacing and setpieces, gow3 is left salvaging what damage gow 2 did.

It's worth noting that Jaffe has recently said that he's open to working on the series again. He said that he'd like to do a Zelda-inspired GoW title.

Before ND became an Uncharted studio, they were a Jak studio, and before that they were a Crash studio, THREE popular franchises, SSM had how many? One?

ND released Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, a completely new genre of game for them with a whole load of challenges, while SSM was still clinging to the PS2 with GOW2, they're less of a studio because they refused to take risk and make the jump to current gen.

They're less of a studio because they wait until everybody else has done their work before actually contributing to the platform's game library. SSM didn't even release GOW3 until ND has done a second Uncharted and everything like LBP and Killzone 2 has come out.

SSM released 4 games (Kinetica, GOW 1, 2, 3), ND released 7 followed by TLOU (not counting the Crash games), that's 3 extra games plus one coming up, SSM has made ONE PS3 games so far, ND has 3 plus TLOU, 2 of them with a robust MP mode, since the PS2 era ND has created TWO new IPs, SSM is still stuck on GOW.

SSM gets too much credit. They should announce a new IP already because it's long overdue.

I have to agree, I'm surprised they got as much as they did out of the story considering the second game ended with Kratos already at the foot of Olympus

Are you blaming this on Balrog?
