The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

I'm really loving the immersion UI to remove the compass and map markers. Can make it a bit fun to find some things - minor quests just assume you can see a marker on the map, but for bigger quests there's usually a hint in dialog or the journal to indicate roughly where the quest is.

The equipable map is also really neat though it doesn't integrate that well - it clips the left hand and just looks dumb when "sheathed". Also you go into "attack" mode when you use it, so your companion also gets aggro. Fortunately other NPCs don't seem to react the same way.

I'm gonna try the newer equipable map as it pretends to be a shield and probably clips less.

Having always played on consoles I'm totally clueless when it comes to PC gaming, so apologies if this question may be somewhat stupid.

I've decided to get a high-end gaming PC and I'm looking at different setups. I'd like to play Skyrim at max/ultra settings coupled with a few texture mods and ENB Series running at 1080p and a steady 30fps. Would this system do the trick?

Intel Core i5 2500K, 3.3Ghz Quad Core overclocked to 4.7Ghz
8GB (2x4GB) Corsair Vengeance LP, DDR3, 1600Mhz
2x 2GB EVGA GTX 560 Ti, 822MHz GPU, 384 Cores, 4000MHz GDDR5 Graphics

I've already got the game on Xbox but having seen some incredible screens in this thread and a few videos of the PC version posted elsewhere I've decided to jump in.

Thanks in advance.

That system should do it easily, but I'd suggest a single 3GB 580 instead of 2 560s. The latter will give you higher average framerates in some games, but the former has better compatibility, less input lag and no danger of micro-stuttering.

No but if you've got the ENB .ini file pointing to a file from the FXAA injector or a previous other mod by accident it can stuff things up.

Best suggestion is to verify the game cache on Steam and then delete any of the standard files for the enb or post process injectors and then put the fresh files in the directory.

Also make sure you didn't reduce the number of uGrid's in your Skyrim.ini file.

You guys seein Siegebreaker?

I started to dislike the bloom of the HD6 config, so I started from scratch with my own:

The forests are the hardest to get right. Between the SSAO making everything shimmer and the shitty lod I'm not sure they'll ever look really good.[/QUOTE]

Please share your files!

I decreased AO by lowering AOAmount in the enbseries.cfg file to around 0.35, much less shimmering and not blotchy, but still visible.

A Quality World Map - With Roads

I do like this. The current map is not to my taste at all, I was getting tired of fumbling around trying to find a road that would take me to my destination. I found myself relying on fast travel because the satellite map was putting me off exploring. Really looking forward to someone coming up with a proper paper world map.

The real solution is to run SSAO in "slow mode" which eliminates the flicker but is a pretty massive hit on fps.

I'm still fooling around with getting nights to look right, then I'll release the config.

Yeah I love this mod - I like to plan out my trip along the roads and kept having to look up the paper map. This mod helps a lot - I found the shortcut path over the mountain to Ivarstead instead of having to take the road that loops around the lake.

If you right click the speaker icon in the system tray and select "Playback devices" you ought to be able to set something other than speakers as the default device. If your headphones are plugged in, you should be able to set them as default and then all games and applications should go straight to them.

I wish all games let you choose the device like WoW does; it's so useful. Having to change it every time to want to use headphones gets old; I just use the headphone jack on my speakers these days.

I looked into this but found nothing because this PC is hooked to the tv and we watch tv through it also. I need sound for the game to just come to the head phones and the other things to come to the tv. If that makes sense.

Welp not sure why but Skyrim is now crashing to desktop immediately after I tell it to load my game.

Installed some new mods but it still does it when I take everything back to vanilla.

Hmm, how about something like this? Worth noting AFAIK you have to have your headphones plugged in so Windows can see them and allow you to set them as default, or for an app to do it.

If that doesn't work, I'm out of ideas :)

Thanks for the help but this just switches all of the sound on the PC when i need 2 different feeds one for the TV and one for the headphones - ill keep looking though

I just used this and I'm not sure entirely what I changed different from the defaults, but the result is the stuttering/hitching I was having before is almost entirely gone. Thanks!

The best thing about I think is that it helped me to unlock all of my CPU cores and get the absolute correct values for how much RAM to allocate for the game.

Everything else wasn't really a problem either.

I didn't just carbon copy and paste his cofigs into mine either because I've done some other mods to my .ini files, but I added and changed whatever was necessary.

Sorry Liquid, didn't notice that it had been in the OP!

I spent all day yesterday screwing around with the new 0.102 version of ENB and it is a BIG update. It's amazing how much shit you can do with that mod, anyway after an entire day - literally 12 hours of sitting in front of my computer, trying one different setting by changing one number in the ENB config file to see what would happen until I can get the perfect image I am SLOWLY by surely getting there.

I've taken a few shots, it's fine to give them a hard time because they're not very good, and I'm capped people so I'm downsampling them by 75% for now (and they're not perfect yet anyway so meh). But I still think my game is really starting to get there in the visual department. Best thing of all is that I am still sitting at 57 - 60 fps at all times :D

But first up... I'd like you guys to help me decide which one of these two is better:

Personally I think the better is a balance between the two perhaps?

Far far FAR from perfect, but they're getting there. The lighting is very nice is certain situations, but it's not perfect, but I'll get there.

I've got a problem at the moment though, I'm stick in a battle with a dragon and it is so damn hard. If he gets a lock on me with his flame breath I'm dead and I've been fighting him for about 2 hours and I've taken less than a quarter of his health :/

That's what I get for putting on 'Deadly Dragons Hard - PISE', sorry but it's WAAAAYYY to hard. I think however even if I disable it, it doesn't change the effects of this Dragon because he's already spawned with the stats that I'm fighting him with... I don't know if I can beat him!

Think I'm going to have to resort to God Mode in order to defeat him or something :/

Maybe I'll just use the console, click on him and type "kill" haha.

Ah it would be nice if some genius out there does a lightning system and/or mesh overhaul (terrain, foliage) after the CK is out ^^

I haven't bought Skyrim yet

Your character can sometimes look like she's been photoshopped in, her armour and general look doesn't suit her surroundings at all. But in other shots it works. Bit hit and miss, I think she looks too.. clean?

Yeah, the Dwemer armour is WAY too clean, it's an amazing armour overhaul, like... it just looks purely incredible, but it doesn't fit the lore AT ALL. I just tried it on basically for that screenshot only and definitely it doesn't suit my character or the world... it's also a bit to... "BIG" for a female character as well.

I think it's called "Ultimate Dwemer Armour Retexture". I can't find the link for it right now and I'm capped so I've been searching and searching but it's no where to be found :/

The other and my main armour is just called "Cleric Armour Upgrade".

It's awesome, I think it's the best armour option in the game for a female. There is a Black and Silver version, Black and Gold and White and Gold as well.

People using females should also check out these: Nocturnal Robes, they're pretty awesome. The Nightingale Elven Silver Mail is also probably my second favourite armour in the game.

Here are a few others that I recommend checking out (IN GAME, the screenshots do not do them justice, and perhaps they're not Lore friendly, but damn some of them are so cool).

Nobile Orcish Dragonslayer Armour

Yeah yeah, this stuff is from LOTR but still, I think the Uruk-Hai stuff looks mighty cool. I used it, tried it out, and then took it away, just a fun thing to check out really, not Lore friendly at all.
Uruk-Hai Steel Armour Re-Texture
Uruk-Hai Shield
Uruk-Hair Sword

I hope everyone also has Weapons of the Third Era and JaySuS swords installed right? They're not really un-balancing at all, just more weapon variety (and frankly in my opinion better looking) to choose from.

that's true, I'm wondering if setting the cores and ram to my system is what improved the performance. i may try turning some other things up as well to see if that was the key.

The Enhanced Night Skyrim mod paired with the darkened nights of the Realistic Lighting Without Post-Processing mod can achieve some spectacular results:

I only wish that these lighting mods adjusted AI behavior during darkened nights. You're at a major disadvantage because you can't see shit, yet the vanilla AI acts like nothing's changed. Should be more difficult from them to spot you as well.

But man, dat immersion.

Just been playing with ENB. Wow. All I can say.

With texture packs, skyboost, enb all running, this is a sweet looking game.

enb is a must, really.

Hey guys, I recently bough this game, currently running on ultra some settings like distant view are set to high but in some towns the game starts lagging. Is there anyway I could fix this?

My specs : i7 930, Nvidia GTX 570, 12GB of RAM

Thanks :)

Eternal Torch

Might be a useful mod for those of you playing with darker nights, seeing as how it's difficult to traverse the landscape when you can't see shit. lol

Most new female skins look way too clean too. E.g. look photoshopped. They don't fit at all but people keep using them.

Using Confidence Man's ENB settings with a few changes..not 100% satisfied with it but its getting there. The nights look great.
