Final Fantasy Mystic Quest is awesome~. At least play it for the amazing Sasai/Kawakami soundtrack.

I usually do an annual playthrough of that game every summer, but I wouldn't be against starting one early in the year (ie: on the weekend since it's so short and I have time to fit one in then).

Oh damn, I should try to play 4 Warriors of Light, too. I loved what little I played of it, but I lost the cart. ;-;

Augh, so many spin-offs to play!

I want to repost some thoughts (with additions) on FF1 NES (only one I've beaten thus far):

Clearly a lot of effort went into the original production. As soon as you start the game up you can tell it's a massive leap from Dragon Quest. The edges of land are no longer square. You partially disappear into forests while striding through them. Walking into townspeople pushes them away. I guess the developers also got pissed in DQII when an NPC would block your path for ages. Holding A selects the default options for everyone in battle, to avoid the annoyance of mashing the button in Dragon Quest just to get everyone to "fight".

The little things mattered to the development team. They really wanted to one-up Dragon Quest in every way. And even Dragon Quest 3 doesn't take many lessons from this, making it an inferior game.

Don't even get me started on the battle system, which was lightyears ahead of its contemporaries.

And that intro scene after the bridge goes up....Goddamn.

DQ3 is inferior to FF1?

??????????

EDIT: Okay, I don't want to turn this thread into a debate about that, so let's not do that.

I was planning on "speed running" FFVII starting on the 31st for its anniversary but tomorrow through the weekend might be better. This is gonna be tough for me since I love grinding! Should be fun!

FFIII is a bit of an awkward game no matter how you play it. I personally much prefer the DS version but Aeana is the exact opposite; the two versions are mechanically similar but balanced very differently in ways that have both ups and downs.

FFIV is fantastic; it completely revamps the mechanics of the original and replaces a ton of mechanical flatness with a great set of new systems devised by Itou himself. I adore it and recommend it unambiguously. (It is also -- compared to the FF baseline at least -- hard as balls, so prepare yourself if you do play it.)

thanks, since the ds version of 3 is really the only way i can access it, that version it is!

i don't really mind a challenge at all in an rpg, in fact i think that would be a plus, and new/revised content sounds good as well.

that just leaves me to find a way to play through 5. as long as the psx version's loading times aren't horrendous i will probably roll with that one and then play 7,8, and 9 off of psn and then 10 and 12 on the original hardware.

thanks!

A couple of years ago I got FFVI for the GBA and finally got to play more than the first hour of the game. I was really loving it until (end of Act I spoilers)
I got Shadow killed by accident
, and then I didn't feel like playing anymore. This might be the excuse I need to finally start over.

I've also been meaning to replay FFIX, finish FFX, and play FFXII for the first time, so I might do any of those as well.

Well it still uses the same archaic battle system as DQ2...

Actually, I guess Chunsoft couldn't have implemented much, if anything, from FF1, seeing as DQ3 only came out two months later.
Hopefully when I play DQ4 I'll finally see some progress...

Already finished FF, now playing FFII. I'm pretty far in the game... I don't quite like the lack of levels system, but I'm still playing it and liking it more than the first one.

Awesome.

The "version of FF1 to play" is the version from FF Origins (which maintains the original gameplay, minus a few fixes), but unfortunately it's not available on PSN in the US. I find the pixel art in the GBA version more attractive but either version will do you fine.

? It's available for 10$ on PSN. I just searched for it on my PSP.

To give up on VP2 and play a FF game instead... Choices, hmmmm.

Too busy playing Shadow Hearts trilogy this month. I also replayed most of the games relatively recently.

What! I was told otherwise! People should definitely play that version of FF1 then.

From my phone :

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
I think I'll play II. That, III, and XII are the only ones I haven't finished.

Hopefully we'll have no more of this a-word business in this thread from here on out.

I got started with FF1, chose a traditional party just because. PSP version is dumb easy so I just walked into the temple and beat him. Or, well, that was the plan, but I got to the Temple and realized that I forgot to buy equipment for people, so I had to walk back and then go back in, so I am actually a level higher than I'd like at this point, but it doesn't really matter.

Indeed. It's later than I thought, so I'll have to pick this up tomorrow.

I'm currently playing FFIV complete edition on PSP. I've played all the FF games to completion minus III. Good enough reason as any to finish it. Dunno if I'll replay all the games seeing as how my collection is spread across two states, but it'll be fun to revisit various entries over the year.

I should really beat FFVI. I'm afraid if I started playing it again now, a remake will come out and I'd lose interest in it :(

Very good game though.

Planning on attempting the main series this year. I'll only actually have from April to September, but I think I can manage it. I hope so. Not at all sure.

I'll jump into this, don't know which one I will play either X-2 or VIII. I really like to play X-2 after just beating X the first time 6 months ago, but I keep hearing horror stories on the story aspect of X-2 and then I turn it on to witness maybe the worse cut-scene ever. Why is Yuna in a pop-band? So I stopped after maybe 3 hours of playing it. Does the story ever get good in X-2? Is it worth playing X-2 besides the battle system?

If you played for three hours, then you would have found that it wasn't Yuna who was in a pop band at all, it was Leblanc impersonating her. That's revealed within the first 15 minutes of the game.

I personally like the story a lot - it is a really interesting look at the way people deal with coming out from under the proverbial rock to try to live their lives, now that they aren't under the constant threat of Sin.

Ok Well since XIII-2 is coming out real soon. I may decide to start streaming XIII first and see if I can finish it before then.

What websites do you guys use to stream?

-I replayed IX last year and don't really want to play it again so that's out.
-For FFX, I probably just wait for whatever they are cooking.
-I like to play some more of FFXII in PCSX2, so that's in.
-XIII is out, it's fresh in my head, beat it three times in past two years.
- Can't play 5 and 6 at the moment other than buying the PSN PSX versions, I have to see what will happen.
- 1-4 PSP and DS, have to buy 4 first at some point.
-Already played through VII, finished it last week.

so. I will start VIII soon. my favorite game!

Twitch.tv is a good one to go with I think.

The dynamics between 4 new characters (kinda spoilers)
Nooj, Baralai, Gippal, and Paine - the whole crimson sphere sidequest that takes places over the course of the game -
are probably the best parts of the story in my opinion.

Aeana your right forgot about that, it's been 5 or so months since I started it up. Yeah that was what I was hoping for in X-2, to see how the characters have moved on after the events of X.

I will join in this weekend with X-2, then play VIII.

Thanks for this thread! Will join in, since I have to finally play 6 (on the SNES, yay) and do a second run of Type-0, this time on Vita.

Ok So I've started my XIII stream. So I guess this is the start of the Lets Play? I'm sorry Arena if this is a little unofficial. I've never done this before.

So yeah, I'm playing the 360 version, because my PS3 is in our theater room and hey lets see if I can finish it before Monday.

I've played 1,3(6), and 7 through 13 (and Mystic Quest!). I just might do this to fill in those early year gaps.

For the past few weeks (since Xmas day actually) I've been thinking about an epic challenge of playing through all the main games (or at least the ones I've never beat and not 11 or 14) for the 25th anniversary.

With the exception of FFV I played all of them to some extent, but only beaten a handful. The only reason I never played V was coz I dont actually own a copy of...but thanks to PSN I can now play that too.

The ones I'm really wanting to play through and the platform I own them on:

XIII - PS3
VI - GBA
IV - PSP
XII - PS2
Ones I've not beaten but I'm not as eager to play:
I - PSP
II - PSP
III - NDS
V - dont own, but will buy on PSN
Already beaten
VII - PSX
VIII - PSX
IX - PSX
X - PS2

I have XIII sitting in my PS3 and VI in my GBA micro ready to start, but I just can't seem to get started. I really haven't been in the mood to play anything this year at all....I actually had more fun thinking about what games to play and how much I wanted to play them :p

I don't feel like replaying every entry, but I'll probably join for Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection, Final Fantasy V (I still haven't finished it!), and Final Fantasy XII: International Zodiac Job System.
