Gonna start VII at 7:15!

Thanks to some help I'll be able ta post some screenshots here an there but I won't go wild. I learned a valuable lesson about screenshots with another game. When ya take over 10,000 of 'em... it takes forever ta sort through them all!

I need to do VII soon, I try to do it at least once a year. I do this since...hmmm...10 years? XD

I need help. =_=

Why help?? Its a tradition! I play it yearly to! I musta cleared the game 30 times by now!

best part of ff7 is making your menu look all pretty

I love doing that! Sadly this time there's simply no time to set it up all nice an good this time around >.<

I've beaten every FF game (well, mainline and the big spinoffs), but 7 is the one title that I never bothered to stick around and beat all the optional bosses and such. I should do that sometime.

After about an hour in FF2, I've managed to make enough money and get to/back from Mysidia, so now I've got fire spears and ogrekillers and thief gloves on my dudes. Time to rock.

I've beaten 4,7,9,10,10-2,12,13, tactics, crisis core

played quite a bit 6, 5, 8, dissisidia

never played/ played only the beginning of 1,2,3, tactics A(-2), crystal chronicles, dirge of cerberus

And my favourite will always be 9 until they release a good FF with an medieval setting instead of steam/cyberpunk

How do you get to Mysidia that fast? Every time I try to do that, I have to spend four or five hours increasing HP. Then, it takes even longer to get money.

Played a bit more. There, Billychu will be happy the pics aren't resized from 800x600. You can sleep again at night.

Not much to say here. It's fairly easy. You can kill him instantly if snare connects or use cave in to kill him.

At least they ackowledge from the beginning that Kefka is crazy.

This scene is dumb :S.

Edgar's tools are way overpowered. They kill everything in one it...I've made it to South Figaro but I have work to do now. Might play later tonight or tomorrow.

it's the small things that always stand out with the pre-rendered backgrounds in the ps1 games. that little poster flapping away in the wind being an example. i really enjoy how they make use of the foreground, too.

I don't mess with trying to survive. It's much faster, though tedious, to take a couple of steps, save, restart, etc. than it is to grind out HP.

I'm playing through all the mainline games. Starting with FF1 on the PSP:

Excited to play through all of them for the first time!

Being speedy messed me up already cause you have to help Jesse get untangled instead of leaving her behind! Reset!

Even on PSP this game takes its sweet time accessing memory cards -.-

Avanlanche is pretty crazy/hasty carrying out another attack the morning after their last! How does President Shinra know about an ex-soldier guy joining them anyway?

It's really amazing to me how advanced FF2 is over FF1. It's kinda funny that FF4 feels like a downgrade compared to FF2 to me in some ways. And of course FF3 went in a totally different direction.

I sometimes wonder how Americans would have felt about FF2 had it come out back when it was new. Wonky leveling system aside, it's just so cool. Sadly, even I was blinded by my dislike for the leveling system for many, many years. I'm just glad I've learned how to appreciate the game now.

the final boss battle theme in ff2 is really under appreciated.

Do you want to give an example? The leveling system really brought the game down for me (only finished this once), so I'd like to hear about some positive sides I seemingly overlooked or forgot.

I'm using a(n awful) capture device, I guess the people playing on PSP use homebrew.

I really hate the leveling system in the game :S. I enjoyed the story and I have to say its pretty great for a famicom game. The keyword system was fun too. You really felt like you were part of the adventure. The game also had many guest characters. Is the GBA version dungeon in the PSP game?

Curious about what you think is a downgrade in FFIV.

You learned to enjoy the game by breaking it a bit ;P

The story is really good, I think, especially considering the era. It's got the political intrigue and drama down, and I think it does character death in a way that is much more mature than FF4's "everybody just sacrifices themselves without any thought" method. The ask/learn system is really cool (though a little underutilized as the game goes on), and so many gameplay aspects feel astonishingly modern compared to FF1, 3, and 4.

It's more correct to say that I learned to enjoy the game by realizing that I don't have to worry about stuff like I thought I did. I am confident that I could play the game totally normally from the start without getting a bit of an extra boost as I do, particularly in the PSP version.

How do you make enough money that early?

I was a bit impressed with II the first time I played it on the PS1. The game was really ahead of its time.

Depends on the version. In the PSX version and earlier ones, you can fight around in the marsh north of Fynn and sell the books that the enemies drop there for ~5000 gil apiece. In the PSP(/GBA too I assume), you can do the method Vamphuntr mentioned earlier in the thread, where you take Minwu to Fynn with low health and cast swap on the guards there to kill them for their drops.

Since I'm going mostly portable (the PSP I'm currently using doesn't have CFW, unfortunately), I'm just going to use screens I find around or that I have from other playthroughs for when I talk about where I am in a game. I did that in the Zelda thread and no one had a problem with it. Of course, I might take pics from my portables just as an update for where I am in terms of levelling, etc.

LOL, so don't hesitate to go low-budget like me.

The only one I still have is Final Fantasy IX. I never played XII either. This seems like it would be a lot of fun. Enjoy all of you first timers.

My FF2 runs end up taking a TON longer than they should, because I'm a perfectionist about certain things.
Trying to get Osmose on your 3 main guys tends to take a while...useful though!

Think on my next playthrough, I'm just gonna blow through it and see how that goes.

Cool idea! Is there a schedule? Do we just play whatever one we feel like?

No schedule, just play what you want. I finished FF1 already and am in the middle of 2. Some other people are playing other games. No big deal. Play what you want, post about your progress.

Been keeping an eye on this thread :D

After seeing the pics in the FF community thread, I may go back to FFIX, my fave is FFVIII but I feel like going for FFIX.

Maybe I'll do what I've done before and start them all and just play each of them when I feel like it rather than sticking with one game XD.

I do have a big backlog that won't get smaller (Xenoblade still to play, Last Story coming out, Tales of Graces f and FFXIII-2) but what the hell, might as well play one of them at least XD.

Since 25 is divisible by 5, clearly that's the only way to start. I think I'm even gonna do this one with FJF rules, minus the randomness.

Next boss! :)
Took my sweet time to get another double level up on the battlefield right before this dungeon, which meant doing almost the complete dungeon twice, but who cares, I was never one to speedrun RPGs (most of my FF7 playthroughs I level up so much that I could easily kill the Midgar Zolom when you first pass the swamp).

I'm really surprised I still like Mystic Quest as much as I do. Last time I played it this long was about 15 years ago when I hadn't played many other RPGs. But even know the game's still fun for what it is, oh and the music!

The story is really good, I think, especially considering the era. It's got the political intrigue and drama down, and I think it does character death in a way that is much more mature than FF4's "everybody just sacrifices themselves without any thought" method.

This really makes me want to go back and play FF2. I don't remember much of its story. Well, I'll see, Mystic Quest first. I don't think I will be able to finish that today anyway (it's 3am).

I just finished Mt. Gulg in FF1.

Okay GAF, there's a FF sale on the EU PSN store. I fancy picking up the V, VI, VIII and IX PS1 classics, but I've heard a lot of bad things about the former two regarding load times and translations. Loading doesn't really bother me, but the translation issues probably will. I don't have a GBA so getting the Advance titles isn't an option for me.

I guess it comes down to the following question: should I buy the PS1 versions of V and VI or just not bother?

I found the PS1 version of FF V to be the least offensive of the PS1 to Snes Square game ports. The loading isn't bad, but it has a rather shoddy translation. It is hardly the deepest and most sophisticated story out there so it never bothered me much. It was always about the gameplay with FF V.

While this is a largely true statement, the GBA translation is much, much better, and adds a lot to the otherwise thin story. Having said that, playing FFV is much better than not playing FFV, so you should go for it.

Yeah, I was gonna ask - what are the definitive versions of FF IV, V, and VI? I assumed the GBA versions were the answer to all 3, but honestly I'm not sure.

Unlocked the Chocobo Knight job in FFTA2.

I'm so tempted to use moogles only, but I have a beast of a bangaa in my party. I love monks, no matter what game it is.

The battle party I have used the most:
Nu Mou - Illusionist/White Mage
Moogle - Moogle Knight/Fussiler
Moogle - Chocobo Knight/Juggler
Viera - Fencer/Elementalist
Banga - White Monk/Master Monk
Seeq - Ranger/Berserker

I'll be redoing some of the sub jobs for them, but most of the time they can all take care of themselves.

Luso is a Gladiator/Parivir, Cid is a Master Monk/Bishop and Adelle is a Blue Mage/White Mage.

Then I have another bunch of randoms I use for fun.

FF IV: I'd say the PSP one. I don't really like the DS remake and the PSP version has got a lot of bonus content over any other version.
FF V: GBA, no doubt.
FF VI: I'd say GBA, too, but some people complained about the music quality and seem to prefer the SNES(?) version.

First off, the PSX versions of these are terrible. Stay away. That said...

4 - NOT the GBA one. There's a bug with the game that affects turn order in battle. Honestly, I didn't mind it too much, but probably best to go with PSP. The DS version is good as well, but it's got quite a few differences from the other versions, and IMO it's much more difficult. So, either that or PSP.

5 - GBA all the way.

6 - SNES if you can, but other than some sound quality issues, I really enjoyed the GBA version.
