[Anime] Your "Controversial" Opinions

English dubs are usually inferior because the English language has not many nuances in vocal interpretation. There should be ups and downs when saying a sentence and most of English dubs come as monotonous.

Thing is, as I don't know a lick of Japanese, I can't catch any of the nuances in Japanese.

Even the poorest dubs have voice inflection or tonalities that carry meaning.

You are now the person I hate the most.
I like you.

I've tried watching the subbed version about 5 times, but I can never get past the third episode without switching over to dub again. There's just something right about it, and the cheesy southern accents for the extras is perfect.

90% of anime is made for pedophiles
Edit it's smaller than that but damn, the whole lolita complex thing is fucking sad and peverse.

FMA Conqueror Of Shambala was a good movie
I agree that it wasn't a bad movie.

Digital Coloring has sucked away alot of the charm and "look" of modern anime. Everything is too shiny and pristine nowadays and it bothers me. Shading seems to be a thing of the past as well.
Don't think this is controversial, but I agree 100%.

I don't understand Japanese either, but French and German dubs are almost always better than their American counterparts.

@blizzard, I'll browse through that one.

Except even Twilight is significantly better than most anime. And Jamie Oliver cooks some...okay, yeah.

Trash is trash. If I have to eat pile of dung or mold, I wouldn't pick either. I'd agree that most anime is bad, but there can't be any real discussion on this, because there are no hard numbers on a significant amount of critically/panned works in the different forms of media. It's a simple matter of understanding that people enjoy trash, and saying anime has an incredible amount of more trash than, say, literature or soap operas cannot be proven.

You can say that dubs might not show vocal nuances, but claiming that the English language doesn't have many is just stupid.

Most of the time I don't care about the sub/dub debate but with Trigun there is ONLY one anwser.

You're taking a very empirical approach to this for an opinion thread.

The best thing about Champloo was the soundtrack and references. What was actually happening story wise was boring after the first few episodes.

Real talk, I kinda feel the same way. What kept my interest in the show was its sense of style (and characters) and I'm guessing that was the point. Otherwise yea, story-wise it was kinda whack.

You just have to compare the languages. American English when spoken sounds loud and obnoxious, especially in cartoons.

This has far more to do with the difficulties of the dubbing process than any inherent flaw in the English language.

You're taking a very empirical approach to this for an opinion thread.

Your original assertion, "Of all the entertainment forms at hand, anime is one of the most uniquely disproportionate in terms of bad-to-good offerings." is more based on numbers than opinions. As a result, I think it's hard to discuss outside of saying "no" or "yes."

But I really like Bebop. :'(

No.
Yes. It axes the major. +1.
Focuses on Bato. +100
It takes a grossly unsatisfying ending from the first movie and expands upon it in an intelligent fashion. +13
Better art. +1.5
No stupid babbling about identity issues for no apparent reason. +90.
No random tank battle. +11

The first movie had nice animation. (At least before the .0 release) The story was dross, the main character was an emo moron, and I don't find her essentially committing suicide to be a satisfying ending.

I like some of the dating-sim adaptations, I like romance comedies, and moe isn't that bad in small doses and if done by a competent studio.

Excluding a few anime movies and TV shows that probably number in the low double-digits, anime as an entertainment medium is complete bullshit drivel of the lowest order designed to appeal to the lowest possible denominator. For every Cowboy Bebop or Ghost in the Shell you have countless mind-numbing shit-stains designed to serve as a loose framework in which to present the various sexist, juvenile, and psychotic fetishes and fantasies that populate the minds of very sad, dysfunctional people.

But what good anime there is can be pretty damn amazing.

This post seems to be made from the perspective of someone with only a passing familiarity with anime. How many of the following things have you seen?

Angel's Egg
Anne of Green Gables
Aoi Bungaku
Ayakashi: Japanese Classic Horror
Bartender
Boogiepop Phantom
Casshern Sins
Chihayafuru
Dennou Coil
Flag
Gankutsuou
Genius Party
Haibane Renmei
Horus: Prince of the Sun
Kaiba
Legend of the Galactic Heroes
Master Keaton
Memories
Metropolis
Mind Game
Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket
Mononoke
Mushishi
Pale Cocoon
Paranoia Agent
Serial Experiments Lain
Time of Eve
Trapeze
Wandering Son
Whisper of the Heart

Here I listed 30 anime which, irregardless of your opinion of their quality, certainly are not designed for the lowest common denominator. And I could easily keep going. Certainly there's a lot of trash, which is especially visible to the West now as almost everything comes over in English, but there's a lot of interesting and unique stuff too if you dig into it.

I really like half of Bebop.

...and all of Innocence.

But still, you are the first person I've ever met who shares my distaste for Monster AND my hatred for FLCL's dub AND my preference for FMA1 AND my lack of fawning for Miyazaki. That's something.

Eureka 7 was one of the worst shows I've ever watched. Sky surfing robots is a crap design even if they're riding a space whale's energy currents so it totally makes sense. (Er somehow.)

Renton needs to be drowned in a bucket as does Eureka and her kids. Holland should've shot himself in the head years before the story even started, and if that world died, I'd be damn happy.

Deathnote is a melodramatic duel between idiots.

Yeah E7 was quite awful. I dropped it after I realized I had watched 30+ episodes of filler. Renton was a useless character and the story wasn't going anywhere.

K-ON is pure garbage, empty, devoid of any soul moe nonsense. Deigned solely to help sell merchensdise

Gurren Lagan is just plain boring. The characters are flat, the fights aren't exctiting, it's perfect example of style over substance. It would be the worst example if it wasn't for:

Panty and Stocking - ugly, pointless excercise in visual variety. Action scenes sucked, characters sucked, their visuals sucked and what's worse, it was all terribly boring. Out of the whole series maybe 10% of it was worth watching.

Evangelion's TV ending is far better than End of Evangelion.

Evangelion's Shinji is the worst anime character ever created

KEY adaptations are the best thing KyoAni has ever made (Fumoffu being the sole exception)

Gonzo's Full Metal Panic was better than Second Raid

In all fairness, I have a much more than passing familiarity with anime and I have only seen a full two of those. I've heard of all but six though, and seen individual episodes of two more.

All I can say about dub is that if the characters yell a lot, you are safer with the original. And that Dubs made in Spain are awesome even though they sound completely different (I'm in Love with the Spaniard dub of Ghost in the Shell) .I guess it is because the foreign dub industry is bigger there, since they dub everything from Hollywood blockbusters to anime.
