I've never understood the 'screaming' comment from people who don't like her.
I mean, sure, I understand people have different tastes and all. That's not what I don't get. I just don't get why you make the comparison to screaming. When I think of screaming, I think of, I don't know, actual screaming that you hear in some metal music, for instance.
Okay I apologize, it must be "High pitched" tone then? Either way I don't like it. This coming from someone who hated hearing her on the radio in the 90's. Probably even today too.

The More You Know:
The register is called 'whistle' though. There are several ways that vocal pedagogy divides vocal registers, but the one I'm most familiar with goes vocal fry / modal / falsetto / whistle, with vocal fry being the lowest and whistle being the highest. Modal is basically your chest voice, mixed voice (e.g. mixing chest and head), and connected head voice.
The main difference between registers is in how the vocal chords behave. Wikipedia has some good little animated gifs for chest register and falsetto.
