I think the issue here that Sony fans don't really want too or are unable to embrace is that there games just doesn't matter.

MS may have a smaller output but when one game Gears 3 outsells damn near the entire Sony line up combined it says something.

I do wonder..most people buy the kinect but not many play it after a couple of playthroughs. How will that affect the purchase of kinect 2.0 and the next Xbox console bundled with it. People will know their experience was relatively short lived

I don't know why people don't realize Kinect is used for more than just games.

What they can't accept is the fact that the 360 is the new PS2 of this generation. PS2 had everything from exclusives, shovelware and multiplatforms and was less powerfull than the Xbox but that didn't matter because it was all about the games. 360 has all that and Live and for some reason is considered less powerfull than the PS3 but in the end it is still about the games.

Yes, it does seem hard for people to accept that most exclusive games, Sony's or anyone else's, just don't matter all that much in the grand scheme of things. While having a larger library of games (i.e. more exclusives) is certainly good in theory, we all have a finite amount of time and money, and we choose to spend it on what we perceive as the most desirable products in any given category - that's even more true for mainstream gamers who are far more numerous than people like us. It just happens to be that for many people and in many categories those products are multiplatform releases or simply not some of those plentiful and rather good, but rarely outstanding PS3 exclusives.

The issue is some don't care about which sells more.

How can it be the PS2 when it doesn't have exclusive support comparable.

'09 was a huge year for Wii o_O

Wii momentum is fading real fast, no wonder Nintendo is pushing Wii U for this year and planning a huge launch for the machine.

09 was the last year of complete Nintedomination. That's when we started seeing signs of the Wii fading, 10 was when it was already in spiraling, and 11 was gloom and doom :p

Generalizations are fun. For one thing, there is no "PS2" this generation. That thing was a beast in popularity.

That's why going back to the sort of threads in the link below is interesting

Sony's 2011 PS3 (Not on 360) Line-up

Seeing which games lived up to player and sales expectations.

Seriously though, it's all business-- that's the only issue. It's not like MS *hates* the core gamers and Sony *loves* them. MS has a good hold on the "core" and "mainstream" gamers in the US so their strategy is to win over new demographics. Sony is responding to the early complaints of "PS3 HAS NO GAEMS" by pumping out games (especially shooters ) specifically made to win over "core" gamers. Given the option, Sony would definitely switch places with MS because it's business.

They supported all the playstation consoles well with exclusives and there wasn't a "Has no games" stigma on those.

Congrats to MS. Damn, I was dead wrong about this gen (I thought PS3>Wii>XBox).

As an aside, upJTboogie seems pretty damn reasonable for someone who prefers their Sony console over others. Not sure he deserves the piling on that's usually reserved for the truly insane single console owners.

Why are you bringing up this love crap? Where could you possibly get that from?

My line of thinking: why would Sony provide so many first party games if it didn't benefit them as a business? Why should Microsoft switch focus back to core games if it didn't benefit them as a business?

To me they're all business moves and the company is essentially interchangeable, but some people might feel different.

(EDIT: maybe Sony makes first party games out of love for their fans)

Matched only by the 50% of its sales occurring outside of the US

I wonder about that. Did Europe/JPN/Oz/Asia really account for the other 7 million units for 2011? Seems like at least 2-3 million of those units would be tied up at US retail by the end of the year, since demand is clearly and overwhelmly there.

10.Xm US: 4.Xm Rest of World (shipped=sold!) - seems like a more believable split to me.

Fair point, but doing a better job of supporting both won't hurt MS.

2-3 million tied up at retail is like 6-8 months of stock. That's insane.

-We'll have to wait until next quarter, but I think there's a very large elephant in the room.

Code:
Xbox 360

                     Sell-through (*) Sell-in

2010 ~ 10.6 12.1

2011 ~ 11.0 14.9

-To be fair, the very same thing happened to Sony last year.

Code:
PS3

                     Sell-through (*) Sell-in

2010 ~ 10.5 14.4

Going to be interesting to see who overshipped the worst after November.
We'll have to wait until next quarter
Code:

In case you guys are interested, the reactions in this thread are causing /v/ to start attacking GAF. It's kind of ridiculous.

Xbox 360 tops PS3 in global sales and NeoGAF goes apeshit.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=461847

For those of you who don't know, NeoGAF is a v.iral marketing forum that usually favors Sony products. The site is best known for providing NPD sales data to the public. Unfortunately for the past several months GAF has been hiding NPD reports for the PS3 and the PSP. Now you know why. GAF has always used sales figures as a public relations weapon against those who oppose their favorite company. Unfortunately, the tides have turned against this company, with hillarious results.

Check out this thread and come watch the fun. And while you do that I'll tell you some more secrets about the biggest v.iral sham since L0ck3rs.

They go on to say that the Real Pic event was an attempt by Evilore to convince the public that all the posters here aren't brainwashed or spambots. WTF? I know I should disregard this whole thing since it's 4chan, but it's not uncommon for me to agree with the things posted there. This is obviously false and yet people seem to be buying into it. It's upsetting at the very least.

I'm speaking strictly on their opinions on video games and the associated industry.
Perm'd ex-GAFers badmouthing GAF isn't anything new and happens basically on every gaming-related messageboard.

It's tough to be #1, always causes jealousy.

lolwat

When was the PS3 ever ahead of the Wii OR 360?

Apart from Gears 3 I haven't touched my 360. I'll hit it again for Trials. Since Netflix came out over here, the PS3 has become the console for streaming.

fun facts:

i love that sony bankroll creative 'prestige' projects that likely won't make back the money in game sales, despite it being a pretty dumb business move.
an established console doesn't need exclusives if they're the multiplatform console of choice. hell, exclusive DLC seems to be a bigger deal. this gen really did see the death of third party exclusives.
Microsoft have craploads of core gamer sales. the people that want The Last Guardian are those of us in the hardcore niche, and that's what microsoft have moved away from. it's not a sizeable section of the market but i am glad Sony are still supporting it.
frankly though, a lot of third parties are still supporting it, so we don't even need Sony to provide for us.
the real faces initiative is silly, my avatar says more about me than a picture of my face does.

and hell, good luck having a picture of your face inspire someone on GAF to draw an awesome picture of it.

plagiarize_kitteh_fincpkqw.jpg

a million props to SovanJedi for the above.

Sony sucks. Sony rules. Sony is a company and sometimes their business decisions align with my interests, but i wouldn't put a ring on it.
