I hope they drop a c-bomb or two just to piss off les papillons sexuels.
Why is Pranay_ Capitalizing words like Good and Fuck?
Why is Pranay_ Capitalizing words like Good and Fuck?
Cutter in UC3 was an English hard man and he didn't say cunt once.
Now THAT was unbelievable writing. Us Brits say cunt like it's "please" or "thank you".
Why is Pranay_ Capitalizing words like Good and Fuck?
Yeah most of the time you just have to walk over a health. The good thing about health packs are that even if you do find a health pack you would need "time" to apply it.
I know the game's focus isn't on monsters, but man, would I love to see ND throw a couple of Resident Evil-grade giants in there somewhere.
It is true, sometimes when I go shopping I hear the word cunt more than anything else- it's quite disturbing really.
So can you look me in the eye, son, and tell me you wouldn't want to see a cordyceps-tranformed elephant attack Joel and Ellie at the zoo?Nah, I don't want that. Keep it grounded in reality (you know, a reality with zombies...)
They should make the hordes and the other people trying to survive more scary than any monster could ever be. That's what makes great zombie films great.
Maybe in the places were the plague is the worst.I know the game's focus isn't on monsters, but man, would I love to see ND throw a couple of Resident Evil-grade giants in there somewhere.

"Everyone swears constantly during combat, especially Ellie"
That's unexpected...
Still not sure what to think about this game, but I guess it seems cool.
In videogames it rarely comes off as authentic, usually it feels like they put the fucks and shits in there to make the game seem more mature.
Wow, war seems like fun, and there even was a cute girl. ( I hope it was a girl)The funny thing is, for as much slack as a lot of war games etc get, soldiers often do swear a ridiculous amount.
"Fucking hell. FUCKING CUNT" just as an RPG narrowly misses them.
Makes you proud to be Britsh.
Of course they will, what else do they have to do?So are some people still going to try and claim this is a zombie game and Uncharted with a different skin?

I don't see how anyone can disagree with this specific point.
I don't agree with the rest of what he said, and I swear all the time in real life, but in video games swearing almost alway comes off as "hey look we're swearing!" Just trying too hard. Don't know if that's because of the voice actors or the direction or the script or what, it just rarely seems authentic.
I would also say that random interchangeable bits that play during combat often sound bad to begin with, let alone if they are tripe like "eat lead fuckfaces."
So are some people still going to try and claim this is a zombie game and Uncharted with a different skin?
Really? Her cussing is the thing that makes you want to not play it?
Any bullet to the chest and head areas should be instant 1 hit kill.it's really hard to visualize how the game will turn out, the little bit pieces of info we got is really not enough. I don't want to let my imagination run wild about what kind of game it is just in case I'll be disappointed since the final game won't be what I'm imagining in my head.
like we know it's limited ammo, but how limited is it, is it so limited that you'll play most of the game with melee, or enough ammo that you'll be shooting dudes in mots confrontation. Resident Evil 1 also have fairly limited ammo compared to other game at the time, but you still end up with enough ammo in the end.
how about location based damage? shoot leg to disable enemies, I really want that in the game, then we got comment about one shot kill. it shouldn't kill if you shot their hands or feet. we also got comment that enemy can be afraid when they're losing the upper hand, or can get angry if their friend is killed. well my imagination tend to run wild and I'm already hoping that when we shoot enemies in non lethal location, then that guy's friends may want to try help him and run away instead of keep coming to me. that kind of thing.
or how about the stealth, can we drag bodies now like in Metal Gear etc.
so excited, but I need a more concrete picture of how the game will play to tamper my expectation.
Man....5 years later and PS3 finally gets a system seller. For me atleast.
I hope you can command ellen page to attack ala Mass Effect.
Some of those details in the OP are confusing and contradictory.
They want to give the game a realistic feel by allowing one bullet one kill, but keep your bullets scarce to discourage direct confrontation.
Ditto for health packs.
But then they say they want to encourage melee attacks with the AI both enemy and partner varieties?
God, don't tell me this is going to have average combat mechanics/controls as well.

I just don't want the cursing to sound stupid. Not in this game. I have no problem with swear words themselves. I dick-titted the hell out of Bulletstorm. I even loved that game's racial slurs (quit your whining, you slanty devil-eyed prancing geisha sushi-dick!). But it's one thing in that game, because the game is deliberately juvenile, and so the tendency for swearing in games to sound juvenile actually fits. Whereas here, that's clearly not how they want to come off in The Last of Us. I fear they will, though, because I can't think of a serious game where the swearing didn't seem incongruent, forced, ham-fisted and cheesy.
it's the end of the world, the last remnants of humanity are killing each other off, and this girl has been raised by the remaining hard boiled elements of this society
in what universe would her being quite familiar with swearing and incorporating it into her language be 'forced' and 'incongruent'?
Face it, the only reason you care is because a certain element of society has conditioned you to give more value to these words than is necessary. In every day end of the world vocabulary, nobody would give a shit. nobody would even say 'these are bad words.' They would just be what everyone uses, and Ellie would adopt it normally, because it's the end of the world and feigned sensibility re: cursing is the last thing on people's minds.
That's not really the point though, of course they should swear in that setting, doesn't mean that the script needs to be convoluted with a load of random swear words the writer thought would sound 'mature'. I don't think that's what Naughty Dog is doing, so I'm not too worried, but what's wrong with people not wanting the dialogue to be jam-packed with swear words?

Exactly. They can make every word "fuck fuck fuck" and most of us (myself included) would still get the game because it will play well and look gorgeous, but that doesn't mean that every word has to be "fuck fuck fuck" or that it won't seem like questionable writing if it is. All I'm asking is they don't overdo it and approach eighth-grade levels of storytelling here. Again, I don't have a problem with swear words -- I've long argued that so long as there's no hate in them, they're harmless -- but there's no denying that in games they come off as juvenile, shit-head writing 99 percent of the time. Maybe it's something about the way they're canned phrases that trigger in real time that makes them stand out more in a "look at me, look at me" sort of way. Whatever the case, it's all in the execution whether they feel right; context alone is not enough. That's not really the point though, of course they should swear in that setting, doesn't mean that the script needs to be convoluted with a load of random swear words the writer thought would sound 'mature'. Why is that contradictory? It just means that you'll have very limited ammunition and should try to avoid confrontation, but when you have no choice the few bullets you have will do their job.
what's contradictory about that? scarce of ammo encourage you to avoid confrontation and at the same time, encourage melee when you do get into combat situation because you want to save on your ammo.
one bullet one kill just shows how precious even one bullet is in that game. it has to be balanced with how rare ammo is in the world, but I'm sure ND is smart enough to know that.
Just reads like they want to encourage both melee, but keeping your distance/ammo scrounging as well.
What's wrong with letting end of the world dialogue feel like end of the world dialogue?
This is like the people who complain when a war movie has excessive cursing. It's fucking war. Soldiers do not give a good goddamn about cursing. This would be -exactly- the same. people would curse, all the time. It might even pepper virtually every sentence. These are hard scrabble individuals surviving by the skin of their teeth, if they didn't curse extremely often it'd be bizarre.
The idea that inserting tons of cursing into your script marks someones attempt to be 'mature' is absurd. It is often essential world building and character building. It can even be the only word in an entire scene, and it can still show remarkable power.
Cursing CAN occasionally mark immaturity. But most of the time, that sort of complaint just never materializes. Most of the time, it's necessary for the material. In an end of the world scenario to feel real, it's necessary.
I don't get any impression of a contradiction
To look at things another way: In the end of the world, it would be perfectly fitting for people to frequently say "OH MY GOD," "OH MY GOD," "OH MY GOD," "OH MY GOD." Like a fucking horror movie version of Extreme Home Makeover. But would it still seem silly if the characters in The Last of Us were saying this with the sort of frequency they're allegedly swearing? Of course. And really, in the end of the world, people in fight or flight situations would probably be saving their breath and energy, panting and coughing under duress. The knife scene in Saving Private Ryan comes to mind. Not everyone vents stress the same way.Again, I'm all for the inclusion of cursing, I just don't want a game that is supposed to be the epitome of interactive storytelling to sound like Bulletstorm.
It's all a moot point for the time being, though. We don't know what we're dealing with until we see what they're talking about for ourselves.
Making the men the real monsters actually presents ND with the chance to do something really dramatic, namely to play up their humanity and the desperation of their situation and make you feel fucked up for killing them even as they try to kill you -- something you wouldn't quite feel with a mindless zombie. Can't wait. Though I would have liked there to be more "zombies". Sad to hear they aren't the main focus.

Again, though, I'm not sure ND will actually pull off these human antagonists being much more than the "all evil, all the time" goons we're accustomed to in Uncharted. Hopefully they've considered this and are implementing behaviors and dialogues to humanize the foes. The magazine says the enemies show fear when out-gunned, so that's a start...
Or maybe if one begs for his life and you spare him, he might either A) come back to help you later or B) stalk you the rest of the chapter and attack you when you least expect it. But you never know what will happen, for sure, in your moment of mercy.Well we do know you will encounter some people who won't be enemies, so I guess it won't always be a case of "oh look, more evil people."
Also the AI sounds really promising, it'd be cool if you could subdue a group of scavengers by shooting just one of them or something.

EDIT: Also, watching that Wire clip, no "remarkable power" saying "fuck" there. That scene could've been entirely silent and it would've been equally effective.
Why can't something be the "epitome of interactive storytelling" and also have tons of cursing? There are things which are top of the class in literature, television and cinema which are non-stop cursing, all the time. If you want games to be treated differently, than that's one argument. And as everyone knows, I think virtually all game stories are awful garbage. That said, if you want games to ever even have a shot at competency, complete creative freedom is a requirement. And that includes being able to curse every other second if it is deemed appropriate, and an end of the world scenario is certainly a type of concept that it would make sense.
