Okay I counted, and apparently Waluigi is playable in 30 games, Toad in 30, Daisy in 27.

I was wrong about Toad being in more games than Waluigi, however, they are all still playable in a very similar amount of games, such as which I don't think one can really say that game appearance number is an advantage in this circumstance..

We got completely different counts. How did this happen? What did you use to do your counting? I used MarioWiki. In Waluigi and Daisy's cases they have a useful chart that shows exactly which games they're playable in, and Daisy is certainly playable in more than 27 games. In Toad's case I went through his entire article, counting each instance he was mentioned as playable. Then, after you made your species argument, I went through his species article and did the same thing to see if that changed anything, making sure not to count it twice if both "the" Toad and his species were playable in the same game. There's a chance I miscounted, but I doubt I missed 2 if you're counting the entire species as playable appearances for Toad, and I certainly didn't miss 5 whole games. So again, I'm curious, how did you get the numbers you did?

This thread is way too big to be running off of pure speculation

We're all secretly hoping he reads GAF and takes our character suggestions

Game production usually overlaps each other, so when Kid Icarus was close to finishing, SSB4 was starting to be made. At the very least, they know some basics that they would go on for smash.

At the top floor of the Nintendo building in Japan there's a giant sphere that feeds on all the gamers around the world that speculate about Smash Bros. This is the source of the Nintendo Magic that is responsible of making all the awesome things they make every year and keeps Nintendo alive.

When this thread reaches 5,000 posts, Miyamoto will create a new IP.

As far as I can tell, Toad isn't actually playable in Mario Tennis GBC, which would put Waluigi in the lead. And SMB 2 and NSMB Wii are both main series Mario titles, so technically Waluigi and Daisy are both playable in more spin-off games than Toad :p. Even if your list was 100% correct, he's been making playable appearances in the franchise for over a decade longer than both of the other characters, and even the entire species is still barely tied with Waluigi. Which further supports my whole "relevance in recent years" argument.

In any case that's a pretty good, comprehensive list. Good job in putting it together.

I think you are mistaken, I did not list Mario Tennis GBC. Mario's Tennis is a Virtual Boy game (it was even packaged with the system). Toad is a playable character in Mario's Tennis.

Also, thank you for the compliment. However, I still feel that Toad has a higher priority due to being the only other character aside from Bowser Jr. to appear continuously in the main Mario series (as well as the only character to have been playable not yet playable in Smash Bros.), perfect attendance in the Mario Kart series (which usually even sell higher than the 3D Mario platformers in Japan, and even outsell Smash Bros.), and generally seen as an iconic character in the Mario series.

Going onto another topic, I am curious what people here think about DK characters. Does anyone here want to see both K. Rool and Dixie Kong get in as playable characters? Usually I only see one or the other, but lately I have been seeing a desire for both of these characters to be included.

I've never been fond of Dixie. I see most Kongs besides DK, Diddy, and Cranky as just parts of DK's weird embarrassing past. The Simpsons episode where they go to Itchy & Scratchy Land and are like "who the hell are these goat and clam characters?" in the gift shop comes to mind.

But I badly want K. Rool, with his basic King design with maybe some moves from his other persona and alt costumes.

I don't care enough about either to want them to be playable, but the series is relevant enough that one of the two being added would be understandable(including both would be overrepresenting, imo). I guess out of the two, K. Rool is easier to make a unique moveset out of, so I'd rather him... but that's just the more interesting choice out of two "whatevers" for me.

The list on this page was simply listing games in which those characters made a playable appearance. Obviously there are many more games where Toad, Waluigi, and Daisy made an unplayable appearance.

I am looking at K. Rool and Dixie Kong and their roles in games.

K. Rool: 11
Donkey Kong Country (antagonist)
Donkey Kong Country 2 (antagonist)
Donkey Kong Country 3 (antagonist)
Donkey Kong Land (antagonist)
Donkey Kong Land 2 (antagonist)
Donkey Kong Land 3 (antagonist)
Donkey Kong 64 (antagonist)
DK: King of Swing (antagonist)
Donkey Kong: Jungle Climber (antagonist)
Donkey Kong: Barrel Blast (playable character)
Mario Super Sluggers (playable character)

Dixie Kong: 13
Donkey Kong Country 2 (main protagonist)
Donkey Kong Country 3 (main protagonist)
Donkey Kong Land 2 (main protagonist)
Donkey Kong Land 3 (main protagonist)
Donkey Konga 2 (playable character)
Donkey Konga 3 (playable character)
DK: King of Swing (playable character)
Donkey Kong: Jungle Climber (playable character)
Donkey Kong: Barrel Blast (playable character)
Diddy Kong Racing DS (playable character)
Mario Hoops 3-on-3 (playable character)
Mario Superstar Baseball (playable character)
Mario Super Sluggers (playable character)

Its interesting that after DK64, Dixie Kong made more game appearances than K. Rool. K. Rool's only post-64 new game appearances were in Paon's Donkey Kong games (King of Swing, Jungle Climber, and Barrel Blast) as well as a playable role in Mario Super Sluggers (in which Dixie also had). K. Rool also had a cameo appearance in Donkey Konga though, however, this was a very minor role.

I think this is the last time I will be doing these lists for this topic.

NO. I am talking in the sense by the time Lucario's movie was two years old, he was the most requested Pokemon newcomer for Smash 4. Zoroark's movie is now closing in on two years, and I have seen far more antipathy toward Zoroark than Lucario.
Again, dates not making much sense.

You're referring to 2008-2007 ... the Smash fandom was in a frenzy in that period of time so of course there would be more people raving about stuff. We don't even have a trailer yet so what we have NOW is super tame compared to what's gonna go down after E3.

And plus, I feel that people have realized the "dark truth" that GameFreak has a ton to do with what Pokemon are PCs in Smash and just kindda accept that the new hot guy is first in line until they see the 6th gen Pokemon ... so the only real thing to demand is Mew2 which is still relevant to the company to this day so that's even moot seeing as I'm sure they will bring him back because of this. Knowing that "fan-want" doesn't matter kinda breaks the magic. I think that's why people want a Pokemon Rival/ gym leader/ Champ ... so that we can get 3 cool popular pokemon instead of just getting Mew2 and the new promo mon.

Oh, and just FYI ... the 5th gen isn't just devoid of any stand out popular Pokemon. According to a poll from Corocoro the top 2 popular Pokemon in Japan are Chandelure and Whimsicott. People arnt latching onto the Pokemon GF are pushing the most but they are clearly grabbing onto others. But I'm sure GF knows this given how much stuff they have for all general 5th gen Pokemon in terms of toys and pillows and stuff.

Intelligent Systems seems to be turning Ike (a mercenary type lord) into a lord arch-type though. Just look at the official artwork for the My Unit in FE12 and notice the uncanny resemblance to Ike.
player2.png

Chrome's outfit is also very similar to Ike's Radiant Dawn appearance too.
That just makes him all the more easier to justify replacing Ike if they run low on time.

Here is a little mini-poll for those reading this topic, out of Toad, Paper Mario, and Bowser Jr, who would you want to see as the newcomer for the Mario series?
Rosalina
She's the latest actual character (Character, not a rep for a race of beings or a different version of a main character) from the series and they seem to really want her to be in the Mario gang now that she's in the side games.

Move-set made around witchcraft and galaxy stuff.

I am still doubting that Zoroark is going to have a massive upsurge in requests and popularity. Zoroark is seen simply as a retread of Lucario.

I think the two legendaries from Black/White that have the potential to become quite popular are Genesect and Meloetta, however, their movie probably won't happen until 2013. Regardless, its probably going to be a collaboration between Game Freak and Sakurai that decides what Black/White (or possibly Generation 6) Pokemon is used.

Mewtwo is still going to be the most desired Pokemon "newcomer" regardless of what happens.

Paper Mario, because I really like the PM games and I actually like variations of the same characters (at least Mario and Link). Didn't know that so many people disliked the idea of that.

But I think Bowser Jr. and Rosalina have a bigger chance of getting in.

Toad is a bland character. Unless he's on a go-kart like someone suggested earlier, he can stay out.

There seems to be no consensus in regards to who the Mario newcomer should be. I am thinking it will ultimately go down to Sakurai's preference, or perhaps, there won't be a Mario newcomer at all.

I am still curious for more opinions on K. Rool and Dixie Kong.

I think Bowser jr would be interesting and fun to play as. having more enemies could make the new story mode more interesting if they choose to create a story like they did with brawl. And wow that new FE unit looks like Ike. Lol

Both a race and a character. Though technically "the original Toad" now only makes playable appearances in Mario Kart and Mario Party. Its comparable to how Yoshi now is in the Mario platformers.

Ahh right, forgot about the Yoshis.

So this means Toad has a chance then? Then again the only real obstacle he has is that he is used as an attack by Peach.

I think Mario might get a newcomer out of the fact that miyamoto or nintendo in general might have a few character ideas that they want to share with sakurai. And between k. Rool and Dixie..eventhough I'm not fond of either I'd take k. Rool. Having an enemy rep along side dk and diddy would make the series feel more fully represented. K. Rool is a character I see a lot on rosters but I think because of his size he could either be slow like bowser or deceptively quick like king ddd. I dont see him as a fun character right now but my opinion could change.

I think Dixie Kong could be interesting. Using her hair to attack other fighters, pick up objects would be a lot like Shantae. The biggest problem with Dixie Kong is that there is little material that could be used in regards to her specials and original ones would need to be made up.

I really hope they find a way to make heavy characters more effective in the game, because the proven advantage of speedy characters should not go as far as effecting roster choices.

K. Rool seems like a great fun choice not just because DK would get a good villain counterpart, but the duels you have with him in the games are often quite fighting game-esque. He pulls all these moves on you which would fit right into SSB, the crown boomerang, the cannonballs, the bouncing and stomping. And his animations are full of personality, little would need to be done in terms of interpretation by the SSB developers.

I hope they ditch the trophy thing at some point, because invariably it's going to result in any story mode having to incorporate that shit. No chance of my terrible, terrible fan-fiction-standard idea of having Zelda use the Triforce to open up access to other Nintendo worlds in order to get rid of Ganon ever happening. :(
Lol. That's pretty out there but I think something like that could happen if every nintendoverse has their own separate story that link to the smash world. My personal idea is that if captain syrup was added her and wario would be competing to find the treasures of the different worlds they came across. I just would like more nintendo enemies used this time around along side some smash ones.

It's been along time since I played Dkc. I forgot that she does use her hair like that. Not a bad idea but I think diddy might be enough. I could see her ending up an AT in the end if k.tool gets priority.

Honestly if they want to actually add plot, they should pull some Super Robot Wars style of storytelling where villains actually are villains who aren't tied to some Legion of Doom, and not manipulated.

I kinda liked the legion of doom eventhough it was corny. Thats kinda why i want more villains to add to the mix. The manipulation part was bad but I guess they wanted to tie it all together somehow. I still dnt get that final boss, I hope he doesn't return.

Red spots blue waistcoat = THE Toad
Red spots red waistcoat = A Toad

A simple texture revision is all that is required to differentiate the two.

Both dammit! DK has just about enough clout to gain 4 slots if we actually take such things into account.
K.Rool is an obvious one, main series villain, fantastic moveset potential drawing from all his boss battles, Kaptain K.Rool could be a character on his own. Another heavy character is always good. He could use a smash redesign, his latest look from the paon games is pretty horrible.
Dixie is interesting to me in the sense she actually was the main character for DKC3, there you go people who want worthy female characters for smash.
The moveset could be a fun one, a character that attacks with hair isn't that unusual, in fact there are other fighting game characters who use this as a character gimmick so you could certainly make something stellar from it, notable that she would use her hair for many things like holding items, tethering to ledges, grabs, attacks, recovery. The more I think about this the more I want it.
I'm also up for the Kiddy Kong tag team idea mentioned earlier, unlike the ice climbers both characters wouldn't be identical which would be the main difference.
But i'm also an unashamed DK fanboy so i'd take someone like Ninja Kong if it meant a new character for the series.

Dixie could be interesting, but I don't give two shits about K.Rool at all.

I have to say this thought is a rare one, usually it's the other way round, any reason why?

Anyway there was also the Mario question earlier, i'm torn between Bowser Jr and Toad.
Horrible confession time, I like Bowser jr, I never viewed him as someone who took the Koopalings place so maybe that factors in but anyway I wouldn't mind him in the game but preferably not as a Bowser clone, maybe a bit like Luigi to Mario but a faster and weaker Bowser isn't that exciting.
Toad, well I actally have no idea what he'd do but to me he still feels like one of the main Mario characters even if his role has been greatly diminished over the years (though NSMB wii is a big boost even with the second toad), if he does get in they could just make Peach's B attack Toadsworth to squash that rather weak reasoning against Toad.

I hope there are no more Mario newcomers, any of the mentioned ones above would just feel like filler.

I'd like to see Dixie in a tagteam with Diddy (or Kiddy, although I'm not particularly fond of his design). Even as a DKC fan, I have to admit she'd be a bit boring on her own. But a tagteam would be unique, and pay tribute to the best Country game. They'd play a little like Ice Climbers, in that both of them are onscreen at once, but they'd have special team moves (like how you could pick each other up and throw the other at enemies in DKC2/3). You could also switch between them (like in the games), so if you don't like Diddy or Dixie then you don't have to play as them. So like a combination of Ice Climbers and Zelda/Sheik.

diddydixie_2.jpg

donkey-kong-country-2-diddy-kongs-quest-200405110254555_640w.jpg

C'mon, Diddy was never meant to be alone!

On K Rool, there's a bunch of moves he could use from his various boss battles. I especially like the thought of using his blunderbuss; maybe you could even switch between normal canonballs, bouncing canonballs and stationary spiked canonballs. Then that boost move he does in DKC2 would be a good Side B:
korrect.png

And the obvious recovery move is his helicopter pack from DKC3.

I just want some more throwbacks to the "black box" era of NES games. Put in Bubbles from Clu Clu Land, Balloon Fighter, Mach Rider and a stage based on Wrecking Crew and I'll be happy. I never really followed the N64 or GC much so I don't really have much in the way of nostalgia for those games or new characters.

BGBW

Maturity, bitches.
First I thought "When has King K Rool ever had a castle in the background during the boss fight?" and then I realised all the screenshots are jumbled up.

He hasn't really been relevant at all. I blame that because of a lack of good DK games though. They've been at least giving Dixie cameos in stuff.

Also I just really like DKC2.

Hey DK Jungle Beat and DKCR are DKC2 level greatness, but yeah K.Rool wasn't in either of those. Still i'm not going to let that deny me my blunderbuss wielding crocodile.

K. Rool is laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaame. DK having a reoccurring villain always seemed weird to me- he's not exactly a hero, he's just a dude who'll kick arse whenever he's messed with. DKCR got it right- DK is just chilling, some tiki dudes come along to take over the island and steal DK's bananas, and DK goes to sort them out. Simple. I much prefer the revolving door system of enemies for that game than having it be the same dude, especially when it's as crappy looking as K.Rool.
