If you're really a youngin' you're going to look back on that "as I grew up" very ironically.

My first games were Pokemon Emerald and some shitty movie tie-in (after that I learned to NEVER play them.) Should I be happy about Pokemon? :D

Anyhoo, if those Wii U cases end up green, blargh.

No offense meant.

I just find it funny anytime someone still in their teens says anything along the line of "as I grew up".

You still are growing up. Enjoy it though. It's a fun ride being a kid.

And in 20 years we're going to be saying, "I can't believe my 27-year-old self thought I knew anything."

Naturally.

That's the process of aging. Looking back on yourself and thinking "Good God just how drunk was I?"

So your first Pokemon game was Emerald?

That just sounds so wrong for some reason. I don't know how one can start Pokemon without starting at Red. This is mind shattering to me, even though it shouldn't.

I still have a mental note to go back and play through the entire series (I usually do so leading up to the launch of a major title in any series.)

I'll try Red first if it's the favoured one.

I'm glad you all liked my mockups =P

They'll probably go with white. As long as they're not some hideous shade of neon green or annoyingly shaped differently than standard DVD cases, I don't really care.

Yeah, I'm sure they will stick with white. Like they said, white it's brand friendly and attracts everyone.

We'll see in a couple of months.

was the wii your introduction to gaming?

i grew up on the atari, but my very first game was super mario bros., back in 1988.
My very first game was Pong. My second game was manually plotting ascii caves on a s/370 console until the sysadmin caught me. It all went downhill from there.

Someone understands!

"nintenfags r menchilren!1!!! sony ftw xD xd"

Oh wait, isn't Emerald the "worst" of the series?

I'm not PokeGAF but I personally loved RSE. That's right, I played all three of them.

Nintendo definitely has got a hold on my balls ever since the Gameboy...

Nah, none taken. I intended growing up as in like, age 4-6ish to now, not as in boy -> man, but anyhoo.

I really hope WiiU ends up having some decent racing games. That's pretty much the main reason I felt the need to get a 360 in addition to my Wii. PGR, Forza, Dirt, Burnout, etc; the 360 had a LOT of great racers, but the Wii? Very little.

If Nintendo can get the major multi-platform racing games (and maybe a good exclusive), I may just be able to stick with WiiU+PC next gen.

Well the way C.A.R.S. seems to turn out, we'll get one serious contender in terms of Racing simulation for the WiiU as well as some Rally games like Dirt etc. Dirt was actually announced for the WiiU at last E3, but it's unclear in what form it's going to release.

So just with those two games the WiiU is allready outclassing the Wii's racer library easily.
Then you have Mario Kart and maybe a new F-Zero and the WiiU should provide a healthy dose of racing games and different genres.

Kind of a waste and/or impossible to have decent recent games without pressure sensitive triggers.

**Tries to imagine a racing game with WiiU controller, sliding the slider and having no decent triggers**

And Ace, I'm feeling a bit ripped off here. We aren't back to talking about specs.

I feel like I know less about the specs of this thing than I did when we got some solid rumors.

Now I know it's not likely to happen, but what would you guys think about something similar to the Vita's UMD Passport program for WiiU?

I am fully aware that the program isn't coming to the US, but that's all because of the piss-poor implementation that Sony used.

Send UPC codes to Nintendo and get a digital discount on downloadable GameCube titles.

Or, in a slightly dastardly move, they could ask you to send them the GAME and take it out of the used marketplace to get the game as a downloadable for even less. Gamestop would likely raise their prices on used games due to scarcity of physical media and keep the used market alive in such an instance by ruling out the possibility of buying it cheaper used and redeeming the download using this implementation.

If they decided to do software emulation for Wii titles, maybe Wii games could be included as well.

They could even go the extra mile and tart the games up Dolphin-style to justify the re-purchase at a discount, much like the Vita's UMD Passport program does.

Could it work? I know I'd give them every disc I have in order to play them in HD.

I'm interested in younger people's perspective: what do you think of 8/16 bit games? Have you played those as well?

I was 20 when the Wii came out btw.

I'm 23 by now and I fucking can't believe someone younger than me know about videogames as people from our age range and older knows, and it saddens me, when I create a son he must be loyal to Nintendo way of yakuza life or else he is sure to be killed =c

The 3rd party support we see at E3 is just going to be very fascinating. A system that from all accounts will not be a full generation ahead of current consoles, coming out at a time with several high profile games on the existing system.

I dont follow this reasoning. The console is supposed to be at least 2x the current Xbox360/PS3. What makes it "not a full generation ahead"?
Is it the timing, ie. that it is released ahead of the competitors? Cause that is a moot point seeing as the 360 released a full year before the Wii and PS3.

No matter how we look at it "next generation" doesn't start when all new iterations of the consoles are released but rather when the first one is.

Oh dear, I was 20 when the Wii launched. Ah to be young again.

Actually had to wait a week for the Wii, because the store I pre-ordered had 13 units at launch. I was number 14 :(

I'm so fucking old, I feel shame for myself, as person =(
Why would you feel ashamed of your age? I mean, I'd understand a youngster feeling a bit embarrassed of their age when among grownups, but the opposite is just puzzling to me. Not that age is of much importance on a message board anyway. That is, as long as you're not senile like me : )

You're right, it is wrong to say that the Wii U is not a full generation ahead 'on all counts', as there is more to it than sheer horsepower. But certainly there is a difference to the situation in which for example the 360 launched. When that launched, there wasn't much on the horizon for PS2, Gamecube was all but dead, and MS of course abandoned its own console. Therefore, it was able to have a pretty successful launch without the greatest launch line up ever. Don't get me wrong, there were a few decent games, but the fact they were clearly a genertion ahead - in terms of graphical fidelity I mean - helped a lot against only moderate competition from previous gen consoles.

Yet now the Wii U is launching while the PS3 and 360 are still going fairly strong, at least in terms of consumer interest in software. A new Halo, a new GTA, a new Assassins Creed etc will all be heavily promoted and on many christmas wishlists. Will there be quite so many willing to buy a new console when these new updates to the biggest selling series are releasing for hardware they already own? Even if the Wii U is perceived as being as far ahead as 360 was of the previous generation, which is fairly optomistic, it has much stiffer competition (and who knows what sort of hype MS and Sony's next gen will be generating by that point. The best response, I think we will all agree, is for Nintendo to release a line up featuring its own most-loved series (and get as many ports of those big multi-format titles as possible). It needs a Mario to compete with a Master Chief.

My first system was a 64 - when I was about 7 or 8.

I'm playing some OGGB, NEW VC games (Kirby, Zelda, Mario, Metroid) now and loving them.

I already have a deal with my partner: we will adopt a daughter, her name will be Saria, and her nursery will be decorated in a Kokiri green theme.

She will be raised to be a Nintendo fan, and she will be spoiled with all of the cute Etsy-like Nintendo accessories she could ever want. :D

I started with the Atari when I was 5 (1983!), and I still especially love 8-bit gaming. When releases at the end of Nintendo console generations slow-down, I use that time to revisit many of my favorites from the past. But this'll be the first time where I won't have to drag-out my old NES.

(yeah.. we're gonna hit that posting goal before GDC..)

I don't know why you complain about being old - especially games by Nintendo make me feel like a 8 year old; and why shouldn't it be the same with you?

21, btw.!

I think the wiiu will look alot better then current gen stuff. The 2x stuff was from the earliest rumors, when the machine was underclocked for heat issues. Rumours now suggest current kits are more powerfull, possibly 5x. I think people over estimating how big a leap next gen will be, especially from MS. A 10x leap is very unlikely to happen for numerous reason.
Will 3rd parties take advantage of wiiu is a totally different question.

Hi guys just wondering.....Given what the latest rumours say about the WiiU (5x 360) and other tech specs rumored, which off the shelf AMD card comes closest in comparison?

You shall not care comparing it to off the shelf parts. Its a closed system, you can squeeze much more juice out of it because programming is done at a closer level to the hardware than PC.

The only important thing about the screen's resolution for me is that it is a direct multiple of 480p (or not far off with a small frame).

The ability to see all of the VC as it was meant to be seen again is a *major* plus point of the new controller. The ability to make new 480p games for it? Even better.

I'm an old man and I miss my CRT. Wii U controller is my best hope.

It's definitely an interesting situation. Currently, there is nothing pushing MS or Sony towards releasing a new system. I'm not going to Google it, but there have been numerous quotes from execs in both companies saying their consoles still have plenty of life left in them - and they're right. People who are expecting a 720 or PS4 in the near future need to ask themselves: Why would either company do that? Why would they risk derailing the money trains they're already on? It's different with Nintendo since the Wii sales are way down and pretty much all of its major software has been released; they're free to make their next move in the home console market.

As far as teh cons0le waRz goes, Nintendo has put themselves in such a good position that it doesn't really matter. The next Halo is going to be a massive best-seller no matter what - but that doesn't make the Wii U somehow less relevant. Just like the Wii, the Wii U is going to compliment people's current gaming setups by giving them a brand new way to play. It won't replace the consoles they own, at least not for a good while. The biggest competition that Nintendo faces isn't MS or Sony, it's actually Apple. Yes, Apple doesn't make consoles, they make things that lots of people use in lieu of them - which is even worse. BTW, if the rumors about MS and Sony making tablet controllers are true, I don't think it's so much about them stealing from Nintendo as it is about them coming to the same conclusions about Apple vs the console gaming industry.

EDIT: I guess since we're all doing it, I have to admit that I was 29 when I picked up my launch Wii. My first console was an Atari 2600.

I entirely share the above opinion. Next gen for nintendo won't be so much about competition with Sony and MS, as it will be about getting the uPad in people's living rooms, where Nintendo will be directly confronting Apple.

I am almost 40, played video games since 12, and proud of it.
