If the Consumer Preview had Media Center, I would use it but since it won't I can't. My laptop is my tv (here at college). But I am super excited for the fall when I can get Win 8 for free!

yeah my next laptop purchase will have a touchscreen and either a removable keyboard or some kind of transformation thing.

Has anyone used a laptop with a swivel? http://www.lenovo.com/products/us/laptop/thinkpad/xtablet-series/x220-tablet/

how durable are they? I wouldn't want to buy one and have the screen pop off.

I own an HP Tm2t with a swivel touchscreen. Should be fun with Windows 8, but ideally, you want an Asus Transformer-like setup where you can lose the keyboard and have a light, thin tablet. The keyboard adds too much bulk and weight. I'm ready to sell this for a Transformer Prime with Windows 8. That's my dream device right now.

That would be fantastic.

Consumer Preview does have Media Center just it is the same as the Windows 7 one? I think I read it on Neowin or something awhile back.

I hate media center. It looks as if they're gonna keep media center and rebrand zune. I really don't know they don't just scrap MC and replace it with zune.

The problem is that such devices are 10 inches at most, so while they work well a tablets, when you plug a keyboard dock what you're getting is essentially a netbook, which petite screen and even smaller keyboard, far from optimal for any work. Faced with a choice I would rather carry the bulk of 12 inch convertible than 10 inch Prime.
Of course, for me the primarly mode is laptop, with occasional tablet, for somebody with reverse prioroties it's propably the other way around.

I used x220. They're very durable. As long as you don't mind the little extra weight it's pretty much the perfect mobile device. Multitouch and on top of that wacom layer, battery life that rivals best ARM devices, pretty much the best KB you can find on laptop and ability to get screen version that's perfectly readable in direct sunlight.

Looks like Microsoft is killing off the Windows Live brand as well as the Zune Brand.

The branding will look like this in Windows 8:

Microsoft Account (Windows Live ID)
Mail (Windows Live Mail)
Calendar (Windows Live Calendar)
People (Windows Live Contacts)
Photos (Windows Live Photo Gallery)
Music (Zune Music Player)
Video (Zune Video Player)

ah ok. sounds good. thx.

Fuuuuuuuuuuck. So tempting to buy a touchpad/tablet just for W8. I've needed a laptop/tablet for so long. Any solid touchpad/tablet recommendations for ~$1000 that I can install W8 on?

Windows Live was/is a terrible brand. glad it's gone.

they just need to rebrand Windows Phone and they're done

What happened to "Live" is what happened to any sub-brand Microsoft comes up with. It becomes successful in one little corner of their company, and they decide to use it for a whole bunch of other unrelated products.

Remember ".net"?

(Zune doesn't apply. It was never "Microsoft Zune". They distanced themselves form it from the start.)

this is basically the tablet they handed out to developers at the build conference.

i think the verge wasnt to keen on it, based on the fact that it is pretty heavy and the battery isnt the best because it is basically a high-ish end pc in a slate. iirc it also has a wacom stylus but im not sure.
i think this and that asus eee slate are the best tablets atm if you want full power.

maybe you'll wanna wait until autumn when the clover trail tablets come out. running on intel but much more battery efficient etc.

it is a bit ridiculous. do they really plan to make "XBOX" their media brand?

If the amount of money wasn't a typo, I'd suggest a Samsung Slate 7 or Asus Eee Slate E121 for Windows 8. The Samsung has the better resolution and supports the snap modes, the Asus got a Wacom stylus.

The Zune team really didn't want to have anything to do with "Microsoft". I still remember that interview from the 2. Gen Zune launch, with Laura Foy and the former marketing guy Cesar whatshisface. When Laura mentioned Zune as a part of Microsoft ("us"), he gave her such a weird look, she apologized and referred to them as "you guys". I get where they were coming from, but I thought that was a really weird moment.

It makes sense. The Xbox 360 is already the media hub in many homes across the country.

Yes, the distancing was from both sides. Even the Xbox has minimal Microsoft branding.

Microsoft wasn't cool, isn't cool, and probably never will be cool. (Despite what the PC gaming "master race" would like to think.) It's not in their corporate DNA. When they try to be "cool" it's like when your dad puts on a cap backwards and tries to rap. It's embarrassing for everyone.

They both have wacom styluses afaik.

No PC gamer thinks Microsoft is cool. Not after GFWL and hardly before that.

I found the interview and it was even weirder.

"And I love that about you guys!"
"Yeah, yeah, we sorta want to make it a really good experience and ... uhm, when you say "you guys", do you mean Microsoft?"
"Oh, I mean Zune!"
"Ah, awesome, yeah ..."
""Us guys" would be Microsoft, "you guys" would be Zune."

Like I said, I get the message, but that kind of thinking never really helps, when you're in a situation where you need all the help you can get.

I've some across some pretty hardcore dorks who thought Microsoft is cool. It's pretty sad.

Well, Bill Gates is simply amazing. But he's no longer at that company. Now, there's plenty they do that is very cool, but the whole image of the company? Nah, too big, too diversified, to old to be just all round cool.

Bill Gates is a genius, but he was never cool.
