Here's the full quote. Big time jumping to conclusions thinking this means you can't upgrade to 8. The way he said it didn't make me think he was trying to justify not having 7--->8 upgrades.

You know, I wonder nowadays what we actually expect. Assuming 8 is a massive jump from 7 in terms of capabilities and the like, am I the only one who wouldnt be shocked if a lot of 7 phones arent compatible. I really just dont see how this isnt expected to some degree (I bolded that last portion, because its very important, lol).

The tech is going to move forward, scaling helps, but you cannot expect it to scale down infinitely. There will be break points. I would be wonderful if folks could have their old 2 year Wp7 and then upgrade to Wp8, but in some cases that probably wont happen. And I dont think thats the end of the world.

carrier updates are so wrong. why can't MS see that.

Wait what? I thought WP wasnt carrier upgrades, I thought it came directly from MS.

So something interesting happened this morning.

I woke up and some of my contacts now had Facebook profiles. I had assumed that they had blocked 3rd party applications, but now they all show up.

… you're right..

my contacts who had disabled third party apps are now visible too... either the people hub is now recognized as a first party app or facebook has screwed with people's privacy settings again and re-enabled third party apps.

Damn son, things ain't that bad around here. WE GOT TO STICK TOGETHER!!

I didn't mean it as an attack on him, he honestly seems to not realize how negative he's been recently. Just trying to let him in on the reason why people might be comparing him to copernisuc and think he's trolling.

Brot is always like that. He complains when it's too nice outside. You know the saying "behinde every cloud is a silver lineing (can't spell for the life of me)" well for him behinde every cloud is another cloud. But he's also very nice and is also very artistic (our OP is one of the best imo) every regular is awesome here. And so are the new members and I hope they never change.

I've been exposed to it since the beginnings of the thread so I'm used to it by now.

Dude this F'in rules. I hope Facebook didn't mess up security and MS was able to get the People Hub recognized as a first party app. Just the make sure. I linked all people that previously had their accounts blocked.

edit: next thing is to do this for LinkedIn. I have a contact I cannot add.

Not quite the answer he is looking for, but Canada has actually had some good news. We just got the Lumia 800 today, the 710 is really inexpensive, the 900 will be out next month, most phones have got the 8107 update.

Like most people in this thread we want more concrete OS news though.

Showed one of my friends the Lumia 800 in pink as she's looking to upgrade and she fell in love with it, hopefully she enjoys it if she chooses it, but then again anything will be an upgrade from that piece of shit Blackberry Curve she has at the minute.

He'll call a lemon a lemon from what I find. If MS does something stupid, he calls it stupid. I dunno, I think he's, what's the term, objective or something? There's not too much subjective whining from what I've seen.

/dreaming MS still needs to get the carrier updates ironed out, and while they're at it, make sure they offer yearly updates to new phones to Windows Phone users. They need to release Apollo and all those phones that come with it, with PureView, this year. Get every single one of the top 250 apps across all the platforms on Marketplace. They need to offer free phones with a Windows 8/XBOX purchase. Hire a great marketing firm to produce some great ads that focus on showing off the UI and functions and air them constantly for months on end, also the ads should be as hilarious as they are stylish. They need to get an update out ASAP to allow customized alert tones for text messaging. Plus, give us a ton of new colors as theme options. /enddreaming

Most phones have got the 8107 update?

AT&T hasn't said a thing about 8107 and they have most of the phones as far as the American carriers go.

My brother just got a cyan Lumia 800 on eBay there now for £175, lucky bastard.

It's locked to 3 but they'll unlock it for £15 which isn't too bad.

I have an HTC Arrive and lately the picture messaging hasn't been working. I couldn't send or receive. So I tried changing the network profile and prl. It would work after that, but only once. Now I don't send or get pictures that often but it was still annoying to change the profile and prl everytime I needed to. So today I try and the network profile change won't go through at all. I was thinking a trip to sprint might be needed but I'm worried they won't know anything about my phone. I was wondering if a factory reset might help, and if I did that what would I need to backup and what would be the easiest way to do that. Thanks for the help.

Phones4U rep today told me the Lumia 800 was one of its hottest selling phones (in their store). There was also a dedicated Nokia Lumia saleswoman in the store

Alright guys, name me one positive WP related thing that happened in the last 3 months.

You guys are going to be stoked for what you call Apollo. :)

Also, about the Windows 8 team. From my experience this summer, it didn't seem like Win8 team were very forthcoming with information to my team in WP. That being said, the UI team might have had a lot closer ties than my team with Win8. Hopefully some of the UI issues will be cleared up with the CP, and possibly is already cleared up with the latest build.

I donated my HTC trophy to my wife but she is having problems getting Gmail to sync when the phone is locked. It just isn't picking anything up until you unlock it, then it updates. Gmail is set to check every 15 mins.

My windows phone is fine with Gmail and I can't see any different settings between the two phones

Both running 7.5

Need help, she's just about ready to throw the phone out of the window

Alright lastflowers, spill it, when will we get the full run down on Apollo?

I find it funny cause I was the person bitching for the past 6 months, and even Brot called me out on that. Plus he dropped his sly "wait for Apollo" line to me as well.

I guess the main positive in the past 3 months is the Nokia partnership has born fruit in the EU at least. Problem is post Mango those in NA have had little good news come their way either if your already are invested in the platform or want to be.

PS: As much as the interface and culture while not bad but just bores the funk out of me in iOS land I fully admit getting and iPhone 5 seems more and more of a possibility to me.

FYI, if she's only on Wifi, the network will disconnect after a screen timeout meaning she will not have any data connection. I'm not sure if this was fixed during Mango or not however.

1. Try to enable 3G
2. Remove the email account and then add it back again.

I don't understand all this fuss about no updates recently. Aren't you supposed to use the phone as a phone, rather than waiting for OS updates all the time? At some point won't it be pretty much done, with no more things needed to add? Then what?

And those saying they like the WP approach compared to IOS - why then say you're thinking of iPhone 5? The approach to the OS is likely to still be similar.

It's not just no updates recently in terms of new stuff. A lot of people are pissed because we haven't gotten existing updates that are out there for bug fixes and security hole plugging.

MS promised it wouldn't be like Android, and while it's not near that bad it's appearing to be lean more Android than iOS.

Also you say at some point won't it pretty much be done? To a certain extent yes, but in general no. When has software ever been done? There is always more stuff to do.

PS: The idea of just saying you should use the phone as a phone is laughable in this day age with regards to smart phone talk.

Apple's iOS isn't looking so rosy with updates right now to be honest. 5.0.1 is buggy—clearly a stopgap—and iPhone owners have been waiting almost three months for 5.1 to be out of beta.

iOS, however staid it may be, is a safe choice. It's still the center of attention in the tech press and it's easy to for people on other platforms to feel that they are missing out and the grass is greener on the other side *shrug*

I'm bored with the current crop of smartphones. I switched from a galaxy nexus to an iPhone 2 weeks ago and it's still not enough for me. A jailbroken iPhone is the best phone available right now and I don't know what to get next :?

I'm trying out Weave and it's pretty nice. What does the Pro version have over the free one? If it has Google Reader support and displays a live tile count I'd definitely purchase it.

That's totally a different situation. In your situation you brought up with Apple they are still doing internal testing and haven't released the latest updates yet. Ever single user though can be fully up to date provided they just install the recommended updates Apple has pushed to them.

Android and WP are in a situation where Google and MS have already released the updates. They just aren't actually getting to the users.

skype, yeah
Gimped and uber late.
Lumia 900?
Definitely a good phone, but not out yet and we won't know if it will have any impact on the market. AT&T's Focus S, a very similar phone, didn't do anything, from what we know.
t-mo's top selling, best rating phones happen to be the nokia 710 and the htc radar.
That's good, but it's T-Mobile. Sprint's Arrive is their highest rated phone. So much for that.
nokia 800 finally came out in canada.
Nokia's doing their job. Congrats?
I finally got one.
Congrats.

But I have to buy a new phone to get it and it doesn't affect me right now.

"My sources have claimed that Apollo isn’t going to be pushed to existing Windows Phone users — which may be a carrier decision as much as, if not more than, a Microsoft one. I’m inclined to think Myerson could and would have said current Windows Phones will get the Windows Phone 8 update if that were, indeed, the case, to set to rest rogue rumors and speculation. The fact he didn’t say this makes me (sadly, though unsurprisingly) believe those saying Apollo will be available on new phones only could be right."

However, I do believe that we'll somehow get a method to update current phones.

Lumia is the #1 selling phone on all carriers in Finland, that is obviously huge.

WP now at .41% market share in one month, from .29% in January.

Now this is good news. Finland is not that surprising, but I honestly thought they would be a bit more bitter about dropping Symbian and Nokia laying off so many jobs.

More of what I consider good news.

According to IDC more than 250,000 Windows Phones have been sold in Russia since phones supporting the language were released in September 2011, taking 3% market share in 2011.

The performance has in fact been so encouraging that they expect Windows Phone to take 14% market share in 2012, ahead of iPhone, which is expected to only take 9% of the market.

Said Simon Baker, analyst at the IDC:

Today’s sales results of a new mobile platform from Microsoft allows one to predict that in the first quarter of 2012 Windows Phone is likely to be able to surpass the number of iOS smartphones sold in Russia

To be honest, that's how I'm seeing it. I'm not some platform warrior and don't really have any desire to defend it from brain dead trolls like the Unknown Prick. I'm still very much interested in this OS. I bought it for the beautiful UI (I'm a sucker for typography) and not that interested in apps or games on phones. iOS can't offer me anything and I consider Android the Windows Mobile of our time. My next phone will definitely be a 3rd gen WP.
Its March already, where is the Lumia 900 at&t announcement?

March 18.

A Rogers leak has the 900 priced at $500. If that turns out to be true that's great considering the 800 is like $520 at Telus.

It's still apparent we're still in the early adopter/hipster phase of owning a Windows Phone. Hardly anybody is on the bandwagon, we're feeling a but left out here and there, and we tend to get frustrated with the speed we're going versus other bandwagons. But those early reports (Russia/Finland) from the front we keep hearing are promising news. There's a little steam picking up, and the next iteration seem to promise far more leg room. I don't know what they're going to do with the amount of features coming to Gen 1/2 phones, but most of us that started with Gen 1 phones will get to upgrade to Apollo phones in 2012-2013. I'm already feeling that massive pull to want new devices like the 900, but I'm becoming more set on holding through to Apollo phones options.

Had my Focus since the begining. With the mango update on my focus with an extra 16gig micro SD card. I'm all set to wait for 3rd gen phones. I'm pretty glad none of the 2nd gen phones have more than 16gigs. I might have upgraded than be raging pissed that my 2nd gen phone might not get the apollo update. I love windows phone UI but 3rd gen phones better have microSD slots or 32gig version. If not I have to go to ios.

I'm mostly talking about how every single rumor that comes out you immediately take it as a fact and then also take the worst possible outcome that could happen with that "fact". Like the comment from the exec in Barcelona about Apple/android and how you right off the bat somehow interpret that to mean that no W7 phones will get upgraded.

If all you do is walk around looking for shit, you shouldn't be complaining when your boots stink.

I don't think you are a platform warrior, you just seem like the type of person who goes through life looking to complain at every opportunity.

Since I will upgrade in mid-April from an Optimus 7 to a Lumia 800 I exchanged my Optimus with a friend for her Xperia Play just because I wanted to play some Zelda ALTTP, but boy going back to Android is just so frustating (previously I had and HTC Incredible, then a Nexus S and used for 3 months a Galaxy S2 as a secondary phone), I rooted it, installed ICS, emulators and all the usual things, i personalized it even the small things because in Android thats the fun part, but I tought ICS will finally make the "Use it day to day" part enjoyable and it still the same old shit as before slow, hiccups, crashing apps, etc.

Now I really really miss my WP, and my friend doesn't want to trade it back since she loves it so much LOL, in the end all is good, I made another convert.

We've been totally shitted on. From day 1 the platform has been a cluster fuck. That's not a rumor. That's facts.

From the bugs we got a launch, to the initial NoDo promises, to not everyone getting the post NoDo Update, to Mango rolling out weirdly for many, to Skype still be promised, to the current bug fix update not getting approved by all carriers, to MS back peddling on the carriers controlling updates, to non committal answers on Apollo updates for existing customers, to Skype finally rolling out but only in half assed late beta form etc....

The UI is frick'n genius as far as I'm concerned. Whomever it was at MS that had this wonderful brainstorm deserves a place among the top for OS UI industrial design. Everyone else at MS has been basically nothing but one giant cock block for getting things right and the platform rolling.
