Sorry about my picture lol. It's a really fun game. Been spending some time with it. I ended up buying some more SNES games (Zombies Ate My Neighbors and Clue) I think I'll stop for now.

Although the SNES was, like other posters have talked about, the perfect system for my childhood, I've come to prefer virtually every other console of its time due to it's slow processor and type of sound chip. It was the perfect RPG system, and had some good relaxing platformers, but Castlevania Bloodlines > All the Super Castlevanias, Contra Hard Cores > Alien Wars, and I think one of the only good STGs for the system might be that Macross one but someone who knows better can let me know (there's no way they can argue the Mega Drive had the better STG lineup though). I had no appreciation of these games back then, however, and was drawn to the SNES's qualities (it's color palette, mode 7, the SuperFX games, etc).

Good lord though, that hardware accommodated RPGs so well. It's hard to imagine FF6 on the Mega Drive or TG16 - only on the Duo could it have possibly had the same emotional impact via the music, etc. The Genesis could put out some awesome beats but the musical style basically had to be uplifting techno/rock, etc, not dark and immersive like FF6.

It had Mega Man X. That is really all that matters.

Speaking of which, finally picked up X3 this past week. Even though I rented it after it came out and got it as part of the PS2 collection, I never got the cart to add to my old standbys of X1 and X2. To be honest, I didn't really care for the game for the longest time.

Right now my history with the Super Nintendo is pretty sad. It sucks that the last time I played it was with a now ex girlfriend.

*sigh*

Anyway, more on topic. The Super Nintendo was a huge part of my gaming history. To my memory, it's what jump started me into gaming in the first place. So many nights playing Kirby, Jurassic Park, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Street Fighter, MK, all those old racing games :D. It was a blast and still to this day. It's actually set up right next to my Wii and 360. Ready to be played at any time :p

Zombies Ate My Neighbors was disappointing. I like the idea behind it and the music is neat, but the way it plays is a little off for me. In particular, the cycling through the weapons is almost game-breaking. The game wants you to be running around quickly, trying to rescue humans, while cycling through the perfect weapon for each monster type. I just as much time staring up at the top weapon icon as I do the screen itself. The radar is essential if you want to do well, but it covers up so much screen area, especially when playing with two players.

I dunno. I've given it a few weeks, many tries, co-op and single. I got relatively far but it just didn't do it for me like other action games do.

It's the first SNES game out of 24 that I have put on the sell/trade list.

Still have my old SNES from like 16 or so years ago. I can't really remember a ton about it because I was only like 3 years old when I got it, the only game that I 100% distinctly remember playing constantly is Donkey Kong Country. Fucking loved that game! Unfortunately, I have my SNES still but the controller and power/video cables are nowhere to be found :(

First party controllers are still easy to find, as are AC adapters and AV cables. Nintendo actually used the same AV cable afterward until the Wii.

I still have my system and play it from time to time, i pick up lots of games from thrift stores and yard sales now, i hope to find earthbound one of these days, would be amazing

bummer i sold most of the best games i had-mario rpg, mega man X/X2, yoshi's island , DKC 1,2,3 , but as i said above, i'm finding the games i sold at thrift stores :D :D

haha one memory i have is me and my cousin used to steal each others games when we visited, he stole my super metroid, i stole his zelda link to the past , i want it back :'(

I actually use a Gamecube Monster brand S-Video cable. It's kind of awesome and overkill :)

I remember getting the SNES with Mario World for Christmas and saying it was the wrong one because I had only ever seen the NES. Turns out that the SNES was way better.

Sadly I don't have a working controller for it anymore but I got the best games on VC.

You can get the awesome colored PAL controller too if you're picking them up.

The convex X and Y buttons actually feel a little better too.

I prefer the detailing on the Super Famicom controllers (it's basically the same as PAL SNES.. I just like the Super Famicom font :p) but the cord is SUPER short.

Another weekend trip to the SNES cart honeyhole. Had some good picks this week, and grabbed a couple (Plox, Goof Troop) based on recommendations from the overlooked 16-bit games thread:

What did you hit up a flea market or a thrift store?

I have two questions I was hoping someone can answer.

1. My original Donkey Kong Country that came with my SNES always gave me a blue screen with some text on it. Why would the game do this?

2. I remember my dad bought a snes game from the flea market and we were trying to get passed the main menu. The only problem was the game was in another language, possibly Japanese. I don't really remember. Anyways we were never able to figure out how to start the game so he traded it for some other snes game. I know this is really vague, but was there such a snes game in America that was in another language or could it have been a hacked snes game? This was mid-90s to late-90s.

you know for all the nes era nostalgia they put in new mario games, i really wish they would put snes era nostalgia in. Most of my favorite mario games are from that time.

3d cell shaded versions of smw or yi would be awesome. I want my cape feather back dammit!

Just got to Japan a month ago and have been picking up loads of great Super Famicom games at used stores for 100 yen. The Super NES was proabably my favorite console, and while I own many more games on other consoles, I love the look and feel of 16-bit games. It's probably why I loved the GBA so much as well.

Just got these at Book Off

Dead battery. For whatever reason, a dead battery in this and the sequels triggers the anti-piracy code.

I have been reading this thread since it's inception. A lot of fantastic memories, thanks all for posting thus far.

I was 17 when the SNES was released in the US. Had been a huge fan of the NES, who wasn't, and reading and comprehending articles on what the SNES detailed and how awesome it's software was going to look compared to it's competition, as well as arcade, was a massive treat. From magazines such as EGM, Gamefan and Game Players, for years they kept my interest high. So much hype, these editors were darn good at their job let me tell you, lol.

It was the first system I ever bought with my own money. I walked to Toys R Us on a very cold Saturday, sometime late November '91 and purchased the SNES along with Final Fantasy 2. It cost me quite a bit of cash, and waiting in line I remember thinking to myself "holy fuck, are you really going to spend this much???? You're fucking crazy man lol" I remember unpacking the system with a furious glee and right away hooked the system up with no issues, and immediately began playing Final Fantasy 2.

Repeated HOLY SHIT thoughts were my initial reactions. Going from what the NES offered in scope, sound and graphics with the Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy series to the first few hours of Final Fantasy 2 was simply incredible. Oh man, those of us who went through that transition were in absolute heaven and bewilderment.

In subsequent years the SNES became my most beloved system, and it remains to this day. Played the system religiously through my remaining years in HS, college, parties, you name it. I remember countless nights playing Rock N Roll Racing, Super Mario Kart with friends and various girl friends as we rented the games non-stop for countless summers. Games such as Final Fantasy 2, Link to the Past, Final Fantasy 3, Chrono Trigger, Ogre Battle, Nobunaga's Ambition - Lord of Darkness, Rock N Roll Racing, Secrets of Evermore, Secrets of Mana, The Seventh Saga, Super Punch Out, Super Metroid, Mortal Kombat 2, Street Fighter 2, Earthbound, Super Mario Kart, Lion King, Mario Paint, Super Mario RPG, Super Mario World 1/2 Yoshi's Island, Donkey Kong Country 1/2 and dozens and dozens more - my friends and I devoted so much time and money to this industry during this time it boggles my mind.

I've replayed most of these games through the years, and the ones that stick out in my mind as creme de la creme right away are Link to the Past, Super Metroid, Final Fantasy 2 and 3. I've been collecting various SNES games through the years, slowly building up a massive collection to the tune of 84 games, and I find myself playing games that I never gave a chance, such as Plok, which surprise and impress me. The SNES gave me terrific, lifelong memories and am immensely happy I was lucky enough to have been there at an age where I could appreciate it. /salute

Got some more games in the mail today!

First up is Sparkster! Played through the first through levels so far and really enjoying it. Still learning how to use the charge and boost.

Then UN Squadron, Super Punch Out and Super GameBoy for $14 shipped together. Love me some eBay sniping!:

I have disdain for Super Punch Out. I bought it on day one. Got home and played it. I literally made it to the final boss in my very first play, without continuing. Nick, or Rick, or whoever was the second guy. I was so disappointed. I traded that crap in the next week for $35 in store credit at Babbages.

I have about 120 games and 4 SNES both the original and the updated. This way, I'll be able to enjoy the golden days of video gaming for the rest of my life. Yes, it's my fav system by a huge margin.

No one's going to read all this, but I'll tell my forbidden love story anyway:

I remember being completely, maddeningly obsessed with the Super NES before it was released. I read the magazines, frothed at the mouth when the local news or Regis and Kelly had Super Mario World on screen. There are few games since that have made me as hyped as SMW.

But I couldn't afford a system and my family wouldn't get me one for a gift. So I just watched it from the sidelines. I played SNES at the local store whenever I was there, sometimes waiting 45 minutes for the other kids to stop playing so I could.

Eventually, a couple years into the run a friend of mine got one. Around the time Metroid was released. I didn't get MUCH time with it, but the time I did get was orgasmic. Even things like Mario Paint were special, especially if I could play without other friends around.

I ended up getting a Genesis though, because games were cheaper and because that friend already had a SNES. No one cared about my Sega, until I got Shining Force. After that, I could borrow the SNES from my friend whenever I wanted. And I did.

One of my favorite gaming marathons ever was when I was 16 and my family all went on vacation to Colorado. I stayed home, cranked up the AC, hooked the SNES up to my parents' TV in their room and sat/laid around playing Final Fantasy III for five days straight.

Eventually in 2000 I was working pretty hard, 21 years old and bored and I found my local Funcoland was selling SNESs. This was when my nostalgia started to kick in for the first time and I actually stopped only caring about NEW NEW NEW things and started to appreciate and crave the older stuff. They told me I could get a SNES for $35 with a game. So I did, choosing Mario All Stars. Then I realized all the other games I wanted to play were less than $5 a piece and I walked out with like 10 games. It was literally like being a fast food joint. "Let's see, I want some Super Metroid...and...Mario World...and how about some Zelda, too? Oh and Metal Warriors...? Do you have Metal War---yes, that's it. Oh and DKC."

Last weekend was spent back home, 2000 miles away, and I found my SNES and wanted to pack it to bring home so me and my kid could play it, but my mother is a hoarder and I coudln't find any of my games in the huge mess. I may need to buy another.

I may be GLAD to buy another.

i finally got my first SNES a couple years ago, but have played it many times before that. ive been able to pick up some awesome games for it. this is definitely one of my all time favorite systems

I didn't get an SNES until very late in its life. It was 1996 and I had an NES and a Genesis.

My parents were getting a divorce(My Mom and I moving out of state) while my Dad and my Dog stayed. Because the move was so sudden, we ended up living in a hotel for a month until we found an apartment. During that time, I got an SNES. I forget whether I had guilt tripped her into getting it for me or she just felt bad for me(maybe a little of both), so she bought me the SNES and a few games. Ended up renting a few games during that time as well(beat DKC!).

By the time fall rolled around, the N64 had just came out and like any sane kid, I wanted it! Though for me to have it, I had to sell one of my systems. It was a tough call, but I went with the SNES :(

But the awesome thing back then was(and maybe other people have similar experiences) you could return open video games to the store for a full refund(well, whatever the current price was). So I had a shit ton of Geoffrey bucks. So in the end, I didn't feel too bad about selling back my SNES and it's game because it's not like I sold everything for peanuts.

Still though I've always been someone who keeps great care of my stuff, so had I kept it. I would have complete in box(mint condition!) Super Mario RPG, DKC 2 and, FFIII, Super Mario Kart, etc.

Just recently, I purchased an SNES again and now I've been buying games for it again. Some that I already had and some that I've always wanted(Earthbound!). So it's pretty awesome having one again.

(Kudos to anyone that read of all of that haha).

Bought mine in '94, still have it today. Used to spend all my time playing Street Fighter 2, DKC, Earthworm Jim, X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse, and other classics. Nowadays I play it on the emulator just to preserve my actual console.

My dad bought me one 20 years ago from Babbages when the system was still 300$. I don't want to spend 300$ now for a system, I couldn't imagine spending that 20 years ago. I eventually bought the updated SNES for like 20$ from a used record store like 7 or 8 years ago.

I still have my SNES games and boxes, everything from FF3 to Chrono Trigger to Secret of Mana to LTTP. It's still my favorite system to this day.

We had a sega genesis at our home, so most of my exposure to the SNES was through friends and the VC.

The most memorable moment for me was when let me try Super Mario RPG by fighting the final boss.

I will never forget the SNES.

I can remember one week where I was sick and lying in the bed. My brother brought me our old SNES with gems like Terranigma, Secret Of Evermore and other stuff. Especially those two had such an impact on me.. I mean, in my opinion those two titles still hold up today very well and are extremely atmospheric.

Greatest system of all time in my opinion.

My first console system. I had gotten it after primarily playing only C64. I missed out on the entire NES age, having only sparingly played SMB3 and Duck Hunt at a friends house. Yes, my mom was a big advocate of keeping away from games.

My dad broke her rules and bought me the SNES with SMW and basically my mind was blown. The music, gameplay, and sound effects were amazing. I missed out on a shitload of games due to my mom constantly confiscating the system. But through the years, the few games I managed to acquire on my own were very memorable. TMNT, Aladdin, Batman, NBA Live....some great times.

Edit:And one of the biggest games. Mortal Kombat 2 with grey blood. Epic.

I remember the first time I played one was at my brother's japanese friend house around 1991. He had the Super Famicon (not the SNES, I guess his parents brought one from Japan) and I remember loving the colorful layout on the controller buttons. I played SMW for 2 hours straight that evening since my bro and his friend were watching a movie. After that all I wanted was a SNES but my parents could not afford one so I had to wait a few years and finally in 1994 my parent were able to buy me one (SNES + SMW bundle) along with Super Metroid. It was amazing to finally own one and it felt like I was living in a dream.

Since I got the console later in its cycle I was able to get a bunch of good games for cheap like SFII Turbo, Zelda ATTP, Mario Kart, etc.

Was not my first console, but is easily one of my favorites. What a great gen. The Genesis and the SNES were pretty much neck and neck for me, and then Street Fighter 2 dropped, and from that point on until the end of the gen the SNES just pulled away. Good times though.

My first love. Fell in love with JRPGs there(we've been broken up for nearly a decade now). In retrospect, I guess the PC has been my most intimate, long-lasting relationship, but the SNES made me fall in love with video games.

I think I was about 3 when my dad got it for us when he went on a trip to the U.S . My favorite memories of it are donkey kong country and super mario world. We spent countless nights playing SMW that place felt magical to me as a child. Super mario 3d land gives me that feeling back again (prefer it to galaxy) , I really hope the new 2d mario games is influenced from SMW

When I was younger, my brother and I had both the Mega Drive and the SNES (both second hand)
Our parents told us that our cousins wanted a console, and because we had two, we I had to give them one of ours. We had more games on the MD, so kept that. Regretted it for years and years to follow.

I was telling this to a women I work with, the next day she turned up to work with a boxed Mario All Star bundled SNES, with all the leads and no yellowing at all. She refused to let me give her any money for it too.

I love the SNES so much. It was my first console and Donkey Kong Country was my first game.

Before the SNES was released I was a game columnist for Gannett News. We had several contacts at Hill and Knowlton (Nintendo's PR firm). Unbeknownst to me, they really wanted us to review the SNES before it was launched in the US. They FedEx'd us the console with all of the launch games.

While we usually got review copies of games early, this was the first time we were treated to an entire new system before anyone in the country got to play it. In fact we were one of the first journalists to play the thing. We could only keep it for two weeks so other journos could review it as well. To put all this into perspective you almost have to have been in the biz at the time, things were very different than they are today. This stuff didn't really happen back then. I kept the original letter I received about it, as a souvenir.

Since official SNES / NES controllers are a little difficult to come by these day how do the third part ones hold up? Particularly the ones that look official but don't have the Nintendo logo on it.

And even i am moderately surprised
Found some incomplete SFC collectiong pictures dotted around my flickr account - now i will cry myself to sleep over the fact i sold all but about 10 of these games. p.s. remember i hate Nintendo apparently ! ;)
