A little bit dissapointed. Until the end I wished a Baldur's Gate III.

I'll buy it only because in Spain we never had Tales of the Sword Coast and I want to play full both games.
You missed one of the best parts of BG1 there!

I'm OK with this. Even if it will be a bad "enhancement" I will still have the original... in it's five or six CD-ROM sleeve, and it's monster to manual, and the gigantic box it came in, and the color map :)

Oh my god I loved the cloth map and the spiral manual. Very pumped for the enhanced edition as well so people who don't want to go back in time can relive these awesome games. BG2, though, is extremely playable today, but BG1 is a bit more on the iffy side for people that have no experience with older games.

From what I've been able to find over the last 5 mins, it seems that Beamdog only have two ex-Bioware devs. Trent Oster, who was a modeler for the original BG, and Cameron Tofer, who was a programmer on the original BG.

EDIT: Oh, Trent lead the development of Neverwinter Nights and the expansions.

So it will be terrible.

I'm joking, I'm actually slightly excited because of the new details. Though the guy leading NWN does not make me confident.

I wonder if they will include the fanmod (well, not really a fanmod in fact) Ascension to ToB... We need the composition of the team ASAP, in order to know if the ones who made Ascension will contribute to this Enhanced edition.

Ascension was made by Dave Gaider (well, and some modders), lead writer on Dragon Age currently. So, unfortunately no.

What is Beamdog?

From beamdog.com

Beamdog is a digital distribution service for games. When you purchase a game on our website, you then use the Beamdog Client to quickly download your game. When the download is finished, your game is ready to play - no installation required! We believe that PC gaming should be as painless as possible, so we strive to remove all the unnecessary steps involved in PC gaming. We also pride ourselves on excellent customer service and like to keep in touch with our users.

On Beamdog, the games you purchase are yours. Once you’ve purchased your games, they won’t be taken away.

So, serious question: why do people think this is for anything other than PC and iPad? Because there's no way they've spent any time/money working on a console interface for something so mouse heavy.

Yes, it was kinda rough around the edges even upon release and I'm happy to see other people experience it. It's a really open-ended game, way less guided than it's sequel. Really unforgiving too. Fantastic game though.

Because the WiiU has a controller that can emulate an iPad close enough to allow for the game to work on that, and Beamdog already has experience with porting stuff to the Wii.

I did play whole BG1 and BG2 on PS3 pad. I found it quite enjoyable with mapping buttons to pad and using right stick as mouse pointer.

Diablo would't work on PAD but BG works and it's fun.

BG saga is real time game but almost all people play it more like turn based tactical RPG with active pause every 2 sec.

If they're going to go the extreme distance required to make an iPad version anything other than a nightmare to play then I don't see why they couldn't handle a console version.

I hope whatever emerges is moddable as well. Playing BG1 and 2 with the widescreen mod alone gives it a huge new lease of life, never mind all the dozens of other tweaks, fixes and enhancements.

they didn't say "pc" yet.

THEY DIDN'T!

edit: look at that, capslock & enter -> post instantly. Today I learned another thing on GAF.

stealth edit: nope, that wasn't it. How did I do that?

So it's going to be BG with mods pre-inserted? I doubt whatever it is, is something you can't do with mods..

Fucking Beamdog.

Do they honestly expect to make more money by making it exclusive to their no-name DD service than if they released it on Amazon, GOG, Steam, etc.?

NEWS FLASH: They wont.

Well, I agree that it would behoove them to release it elsewhere. However, is there something horrible about Beamdog that I don't know about? Why not just buy it from there?

This. They will probably cave eventually, but it's almost like they don't want to make money.

"You'll be allowed to make Baldur's Gate 3 on ONE condition. Repackage and update the first two titles and then sell them EXCLUSIVELY on Beamdog to measure interest. If it sells well we will greenlight a sequel *Laughs*"

Most people I know like to have their games centralized to one or two sites... so it's annoying to need a multiple accounts just for one game. I.E. Origin for BF3, Beamdog for BGEE, etc.

With that said, I'm not sure how Beamdog actually works.. whether you get a .exe or have to download a client.

I was kinda hoping for a change to more modern D&D rules myself. 2nd Edition feels very dated these days despite loving the games.

Curious to see what this ends up being.

I think it will be overhauled graphically. At least from the sound of it. Mods can only do so much in that department.

I hope so. Mods also made my game quite unstable, so if this is a graphically enhanced version with stable additions, I would get it. Not happy if it's only on their service, but if it's good enough I don't mind.

I understand the preference. I just don't understand the animosity. I'm not trying to be aloof, however, to me, if you're really adamant about it being on your platform of choice, then they just saved you money.

Now, for instances where games previously available on a platform get pulled because of political power plays? Yeah, I get it.

Beamdog is working on the Baldur's Gate project, though the developer's Overhaul Games division is taking lead. Atari is handling publishing duties, and Wizards of the Coast is licensing its (D&D-based) IP.

Update: Beamdog reps tell us that the team at Overhaul is adding "new, original content" to the original game to make up the Enhanced Edition. "This is the Enhanced Edition, it's not a repackage. We have the original source code and are doing a significant update." He also confirms that no platforms have been announced just yet.

Update 2: A Beamdog rep also confirms that the company is self-publishing. Though he wouldn't go into detail regarding the new content, he says that "it's being lovingly crafted in the spirit of the original with the help of some of the original developers." Additionally, Cameron Tofer and Trent Oster have been working on the project ("planning and organizing") for "over a year now." We'll also hear more soon, as the team is planning "regular announcements every week with more details."
