The fervor over the killing of African-American teenager Trayvon Martin has dominated the airwaves over the last few days. George Zimmerman, the man who killed Martin, was released by local police in Florida under the state's "stand your ground" law. In other words, Zimmerman is claiming self defense despite the fact that Martin was unarmed. Zimmerman deserves his day in court, but after listening to the 911 call and knowing Zimmerman's history of reporting black males to the police, I have my doubts about self defense.

Man, what did you expect?

There's some posters on neogaf who would prefer stormfront. Not for racism, but for the perfect echo chamber for a majority to scream persecution by the minority.

Yeah there was a gaffer trying to sockpuppet me over there before. Some members thought I was a poster over there because of it.

"I agree with Taaffe and understand were Zimmerman was coming from. Right or wrong when we hear about a crime, we think black. So yeah, if you live in a neighborhood thats had 8 robberies, and you see someone walking in your neighborhood that you don't know and he's black, you are gonna get your guard up. Its easy to throw stones at Zimmerman from behind your computer, but if it was my neighborhood I would be doing the same and so would you."

From Huffington Post. This might be worse than stormfront. AT least they are upfront about their racism.

So thaaaattts what stormfront is.

Edit:

Nm, some how it all seems to be the Jewish community behind it all.. carry on...

Stormfront is a marriage of extreme Rightwing racists and the anti-Jew community. Note that they don't really like ANYone who's not, again, White Male Christian, so blacks and Jews pretty much are the same.

Nope, not 'right or wrong,' just plain wrong. Jesus Christ.

Oh and that cartoon is amazing.

Mr. Community
People still talk to Harvey? I feel a duty to flee when I see his posts on topics like this.

Glad to see that we'll be getting an actual independent investigation of this case.

Kharvey is the litmus test of GAF wisdom.

If you reply to him you fail.

And I see a lot of people failing in this thread ;D

The said part is, most of the above has already been said in this thread.

This is actually an important issue that we (Americans) need to talk about but sadly I don't think we're at that point yet that we can. The race thing may very well be a factor in this but it pales in comparison to the fact that an armed 250 lb man stalked (at least initially) and killed an unarmed kid.

Which of the two are more likely at the moment.

  1. A man suffering from both an unhealthy obsession with crime and heightened sense of anxiety who will need psychiatric evaluation
  2. A man suffering from an unhealthy obsession with crime and disposition to racial prejudice/hate.

They're not mutually exclusive.

I don't care about his motives or his emotional state, he stalked and killed an unarmed young boy and the 911 calls show the kid pleaded for help, pleaded for his life.. he shouldn't be free to roam society.

Every few days I click this thread in the hope that something new has been done about it... And it never has.

There's a reason prejudice is wrong and should be discouraged. This is an example. So many incorrect assumptions based off of initial appearances. And a child is dead because of it.

All because of failed "robbers were black....this guy is black...therefore this kid MUST be a robber!" logic.

Fuck people with their assumptions.

NO. NO. NO. NO. NO. Who the hell wrote this piece of shit!

"When you see a black or Latino youngster, particularly on the street, you walk to the other side of the street. You try to avoid that confrontation. Trayvon Martin's you know, god bless him, he's an innocent kid, a wonderful kid, a box of Skittles in his hand. He didn't deserve to die. But I'll bet you money, if he didn't have that hoodie on, that -- that nutty neighborhood watch guy wouldn't have responded in that violent and aggressive way."

What the $%# am I reading? Does he not even consider that maybe it might be a good idea to put a hoodie on to keep your head from getting cold/wet and not to go out and commit various crimes?

Don't dress like a slut
Don't have your hoodie up
Be sure to wear your safety colors at all times
Don't walk around at night
Never have anything in your pockets

Anything else I'm forgetting? I don't want to get raped or shot

If you want to totally alienate and ostracise people then, yeah, that's exactly what you do.

Is this 1955?

Will white people believe us now when we tell them racism still exists?
Oi, mush, don't fight fire with fire. Some white people are well aware of the existence of racism.

The safety color thing is different than the others, as it's just good common sense to prevent drivers from accidentally running over you.

You forgot about "get a white friend" per Chris Rock...

I'm unclear on this law. So basically it gives you free reign to shoot anyone as long as there is no one to contradict you saying it was self defense? If this is about right, then I'd hate to be Zimmerman about now. He should probably leave Florida until this law is repealed.

Katt Williams, not Chris Rock!

(Really sad thing is, this might have gone down differently if he'd have had a white guy with him).

I can't comment on its connotations or the stereotypes in the States, but here Rivera's comments are actual policy for many retailers and malls. Just search 'hoodie ban'. The hoodie in general is a popular piece of clothing of urban youngsters but, because of the large amount of CCTV cameras, there is a high tendency for problem kids to cover their head to make identification difficult and so over time it has become synonymous with ill intent. I remember exploring this stereotype: a group of friends were walking home after class during a week where some of the kids attending our school were involved in a mass brawl with a rival school. A police van was about to drive past us, so we tested this out - we put on our hoods and within seconds, we heard the sirens. We were stopped, searched and asked for our names and addresses. Depending on the area, wearing the hood can unnerve some people. Then again with the reaction in the above quotes I suppose it's a different mindset in the States in regards to the hoodie.

But the funny thing is....He didn't even have his hoodie on. Making Riveras comments even more absurd.

To add another anecdote - the gas station I usually go to has a sign on its door, one that states you must remove your hat/hood, or be considered a suspicious person. There is an explanation below that "people had been using the clothing to obscure their faces while stealing." At least it's upfront and honest about its intentions, and why it has such a policy.
