Paper or plastic?
"When you see a black or Latino youngster, particularly on the street, you walk to the other side of the street. You try to avoid that confrontation. Trayvon Martin's you know, god bless him, he's an innocent kid, a wonderful kid, a box of Skittles in his hand. He didn't deserve to die. But I'll bet you money, if he didn't have that hoodie on, that -- that nutty neighborhood watch guy wouldn't have responded in that violent and aggressive way."

What a steaming piece of SHIT.

To add another anecdote - the gas station I usually go to has a sign on its door, one that states you must remove your hat/hood, or be considered a suspicious person. There is an explanation below that "people had been using the clothing to obscure their faces while stealing." At least it's upfront and honest about its intentions, and why it has such a policy.

Right, but there is a huge difference between dress codes enforced by private establishments and walking on a public street. You and meus seem to be conflating the two.

I once almost ran over Geraldo with my car.

Couple of years ago he jumped out in front of my car in a Barnes & Noble parking lot. He was wearing a yellow rainsuit and walking like traffic laws don't apply to him. I thought what an asshole, today he confirms it.

If it was Florida you could have kept driving saying he was yelling at you and looked as though he was going to approach your door in menacing fashion. Self defense dude... plus the world would be less one asshole.

I'm use to it. To be blunt. It's nothing new. My windbreaker has a hood. Many times I'll be rocking that and a pair of shades. I sometimes get stares, but I mind my business and no one bothers me. I'm typically very polite but I do take em off when I enter a bank.

But yea...last time I checked this was America. I should be able to wear whatever the fuck I want.

I can't comment on its connotations or the stereotypes in the States, but here Rivera's comments are actual policy for many retailers and malls. Just search 'hoodie ban'. The hoodie in general is a popular piece of clothing of urban youngsters but, because of the large amount of CCTV cameras, there is a high tendency for problem kids to cover their head to make identification difficult and so over time it has become synonymous with ill intent. I remember exploring this stereotype: a group of friends were walking home after class during a week where some of the kids attending our school were involved in a mass brawl with a rival school. A police van was about to drive past us, so we tested this out - we put on our hoods and within seconds, we heard the sirens. We were stopped, searched and asked for our names and addresses. Depending on the area, wearing the hood can unnerve some people. Then again with the reaction in the above quotes I suppose it's a different mindset in the States in regards to the hoodie.

So the cops didn't gun you guys down? Weird.

Fucking wow:

The Guy Who Got Trolled by Al Capone's Tomb said:
Stop wearing it! Don't let your kid -- you know the old Johnny Cash song, don't take your gun to town, son. Leave your gun at home. There is some things that are almost inevitable. I'm not suggesting that Trayvon Martin had any kind of weapon or anything, but he wore an outfit that allowed someone to respond in this irrational, overzealous way and if he had been dressed more appropriately, I think unless it's raining out, or you're at a track meet, leave the hoodie home. Don't let your children go out there.

Really?

Awesome.

A few years ago, I went for a walk in a park. A cop stopped to talk to me due to a lady calling in saying that I looked "suspicious". I was wearing a polo shirt. If a hoodie means "shoot me" what does a polo mean Geraldo? Don't get me wrong, some stupid people think "automatic thug" when they see a Black man wearing a hoodie but the reason why they think that in the first place is due to the person wearing it being a Black male (obviously).

WTF, skittles don't come in boxes

"I agree with Taaffe and understand were Zimmerman was coming from. Right or wrong when we hear about a crime, we think black. So yeah, if you live in a neighborhood thats had 8 robberies, and you see someone walking in your neighborhood that you don't know and he's black, you are gonna get your guard up. Its easy to throw stones at Zimmerman from behind your computer, but if it was my neighborhood I would be doing the same and so would you."

From Huffington Post. This might be worse than stormfront. AT least they are upfront about their racism.

what the FUCK
asshole doesn't need to lump me and other people with a fucking ounce of common sense into his little fantasy world. "us and our fear of people because of their skin color, amirite?". Fucking no.

The funniest part is is it was raining and the kid was an athlete, lol. Athletes wear hoodies even when they aren't "at track meet", so Geraldo fails even in his attempts to blame the victim.

what's even funnier is that he was in his own neighborhood *smh*

Don't dress like a slut
Don't have your hoodie up
Be sure to wear your safety colors at all times
Don't walk around at night
Never have anything in your pockets

Anything else I'm forgetting? I don't want to get raped or shot

No skittles.

Rarely do I see ignorance and stupidity combined so perfectly.

So what was this neighborhood like? Was it all white or something? My area is almost an even 50/50 split black and white and everyone on my block is friendly and make great neighbors. I think if you live in an area where you're exposed to people of different backgrounds you stop seeing the other race from yours as scary in a hoodie. You realize they look like just as much of a retard as any other kid with his pants down and hoodie up.

I did no such thing.

I just added to what I perceived as a discussion of the bastardization of the hoodie, and how businesses and other establishments freak out about them. I certainly don't agree with Geraldo seemingly blaming Trayvon for his own murder, due to wearing a certain piece of clothing.

How is different from the "A woman dressed provacitive, so she was asking to get raped" argument again?

Anyone in this thread defending Zimmerman should not only feel ashamed, but should just go back to stormfront, they might listen to you there.

wait wait wait, i know this discussion is based off of Big Nose Rivera's assanine statement but, why is the focus of this discussion about him wearing a hoodie? the boy was walking HOME. shouldn't that be the focus? to me, pulling in discussions of what clothing can perceive to the mind of other people is completely irrelavent in this matter.

Shouldn't have worn that miniskirt if she didn't want to get raped, bro.

Today, it's the hoodie. Tomorrow it's the plain white-t. Pretty soon I'll have to walk year around in a full three piece suit no matter where I'm going. Just to abate the paranoia of bigots.

I'm unclear on this law. So basically it gives you free reign to shoot anyone as long as there is no one to contradict you saying it was self defense? If this is about right, then I'd hate to be Zimmerman about now. He should probably leave Florida until this law is repealed.

Actually, Florida is probably one of the safest places for him to be.

You should have done it and claimed the yellow rainsuit was threatening and that you acted in defense of your life.

He was probably reporting on hurricane, you selfish monster.

Drudge is running with Obama's comments, labeling them as him entering the "race fray." I'd imagine the rest of the right wing media will follow soon enough.

I'm white, more than twice his size, have a gigantic beard, but I can wear a hoodie 6 days out of 7 on my way to work/school/gym/running in my suburb.

Good thing I'm a cracker because if I was brown I probably would have gotten shot/arrested 100 times by Rivera's logic.

Hey guys at my school legit 50%+ of the people are in hoodies whenever it's below 50 degrees. Male/female Black/white

Why does my school have so many robbers/gang bangers/threats? Should I start wearing kevlar and carry a weapon to class?

Sounds like your school needs a Skittles Detector installing.

Practically everyone at my college was wearing a hoodie in January. I feared for my life, until I realized that I was also wearing a hoodie. Then I had to fight the strong urges to stab someone.
